There was a loud, ear-piercing scream from further inside the building.

Jasmine Reed (Girl 052) had just woken up. There were voices and they woke her up. She had been besides herself, floored, quite literally on the floor, but that was until her fingers landed on her collar and she remembered the room and Mr. Graham and the blood. 'Besides herself' could not possibly describe her reaction. She let out one scream that pierced her ears.

Then she stopped. Jasmine fell into an abrupt silence. The drugs in her system lingered, and the scream made her dizzy. She wanted to scream again. She slapped herself across the face, breathed in through her nose, balled her fingers into fists.

Jesus, Jazz, calm down. Just calm down.

Jasmine sat up. There was a voice, somewhere, but she had an one-track mind and she didn't even consider where the voice was coming from. Jasmine knew she had to get out of there, wherever she was. She scrambled to her feet. She didn't even take in her surroundings, giving herself enough time to recognize that she was behind some sort of counter. There was a bag placed in a wooden chair, oh shit, right, her dufflebag! Jasmine snatched it and threw it over her shoulder.

The library counter was a small island in the corner by the entrance. Jasmine did not see a door or anything of the sort, and in her panic she neglected to check the office behind her. So Jasmine did the only thing she could think of; she scrambled over the counter. What's the worst that could possibly happen?

Well. Jasmine could lose her balance, fall off and land on her head.

Jasmine's mother always told her to take her time. Jasmine was a terrible listener.

"Owww."

Contrary to popular belief, it is extremely hard to stay panicked when you've hit your head so hard you're seeing stars.

Jasmine sat there, holding her head, muttering and cursing, kuso, kuso, kuso. It was a force of habit for her; her parents had no idea what she was saying, after all. To any outsider, though, they'd probably think she was talking gibberish to herself. Maybe that was the case for Lily, maybe not.

When she heard a familiar voice, she looked up. Misty-eyed, frowning, Jasmine was suffering through the pain like a child who just scraped her ankle. It took her a minute to believe it was really Lily Caldwell. Her brain kept saying, "wait, why was Lily here?", "she wasn't there before, I would have seen her," "Why is Lily talking to me, I thought she hated me." Still feeling out of sorts, Jasmine forced herself to speak.

"Oh. Lily? Is that really that you?" She swallowed, her throat dry, "I'm fine, I just fell and - "

That's when she saw Lily's hand. And the blood.

Under normal circumstances, shock would have given her enough time to realize that, no, Lily couldn't have stabbed anyone with that shard of glass. Certainly Jasmine, under normal circumstances, would have taken one look at Lily and understood that a girl that size would not have been able to overpower anyone, not even Jasmine herself.

But these weren't normal circumstances, were they? Jasmine was drugged. She landed on her head only moments prior to her eyes locking with Lily. She was also scared shitless. So all Jasmine could see was the glass shard and blood.

The blood was all she needed to see.

Jasmine screamed. In a sudden frenzy she started to crawl backward, scrambling in the direction of the door. Her eyes never left Lily and her bloodied hand. Her mind was overheated, her eyes wild, her face twisted into a look of sheer terror.

"NO!" She clenched the duffel bag for dear life. "STAY AWAY! D-DON'T COME ANY CLOSER!"

... Or what? You'll swing your bag at her?

Jasmine wasn't listening. At least she wasn't screaming anymore, but that was because her back pumped up against a wall, wait what? She looked back. She must have crawled back too far to the left because the door was a couple of feet or so to her left. Damn it! If she got up, Lily could easily close the distance before Jasmine even made it to her feet. No escape.

She stared at Lily. Lily didn't seem to be pouncing just yet. She was waving her bloody hand at her. Jasmine must have missed something she said. All she knew was that Lily's hand was bloody, holy shit holy shit it was practically pooling on the floor. Rational thinking was out of the window.

"What?!" Jasmine yelled. "T-Tell you what? I don't understand!"

Wait, Lily wasn't looking at her. Jasmine's eyes darted, wait, was she talking to someone else? Wait, wait, here's two of them?!

This was so so bad. She grabbed hold of her bag and felt the form of her hammer in her dufflebag. Jasmine coughed. A shudder raked up her spine. Must be her weapon. She had no idea what it was but it felt hard - err, the painful kind of hard. She could probably hit someone with it.

She eased the zipper to her dufflebag down and reached for the hammer.

Jasmine felt sick. Tears streamed down her face. She could not believe she was actually considering this. She breathes in, exhaled, calm down, just think. Maybe - Maybe she had to. Maybe she was protecting herself.

Only if she comes after you. Only if she tries to kill you. Promise me.

Jasmine bit her tongue and said nothing. For once.

... Don't shoot. Shoot? Shoot.

Jasmine's pupils dilated. Coleen successfully managed to calm Jasmine down just enough for her to start listening to what Lily was actually saying. Fear still prickled at her skin, and her mouth felt dry. Her gaze turned, alternating between Lily and Coleen several times. She was scared, sure, but there was this overbearing sense of guilt churning in her belly. She didn't quite understand it. Sure, now that she was calming down she knew why she felt guilty. She could see just how scared Lily was. Lily was as scared as she was. That... That reassured her, strangely.

Jasmine wanted to speak, but again, she stopped herself. She cleared her throat, sniffled, then pulled her hand out. She held up the hammer, with the small head and wooden handle. It felt heavy in her hand, but now that she was seeing it for the first time, it looked puny. Like a toy.

... Snrk.

Jasmine giggled. She couldn't help it; her fear collapsed, relief hit her so hard that she giggled. She didn't even know what she was laughing at, just, wow.

"... Okay," Jasmine said. To Lily, though her eyes stared more at the floor and her sneakers.

Coleen and Jasmine stopped laughing. Now the library was dead silent, you could hear a pin drop. Jasmine hated white noise, hated the lack of sound. She forced herself to stand up, fumbling with the zipper to her duffle bag. She put her hammer away, zipped the bag back up. No reason to have it out now.

"Sorry," she spat out suddenly. "i just - I heard you two talking, and my head was still fuzzy and I just freaked out. Sorry."

Granted, her head was still fuzzy. Brain fog was something Jasmine learned to accept. But she felt guilty too, deep, paralyzing. She didn't quite understand why, it was all a big misunderstanding. The kind of guilt that gets in your chest and just builds and builds, and you can't just apologize and forget about it because an apology just wasn't going to cut it.

Jasmine pressed the weight of her body against the wall. She looked towards the couch again, at the girl, Coleen wasn't laughing anymore. She was crying. Jasmine wanted to go right over and give her a hug. Of course Jasmine didn't know her name was Coleen, but she remembered her face. She was the one with the scars, right? The way she always cropped her hair over the side of the face, it was hard to forget something like that. Jasmine thought the look suited her. Something told her that hugging Coleen would just make matters worse. A rare moment of self-restraint for Jasmine Reed.

"... um," Jasmine cleared her dry throat again. She clasped her arm with the opposite hand. The silence was suffocating her. "Lily, do you need any help with that?"

"... Okay," Jasmine said, resigned. She nodded, more aimed at herself than anyone else. "... Yeah. Sorry about that."

She said nothing else for awhile. She slumped against the wall. Jasmine hated this feeling, this churning in her stomach, the guilt she assumed. Assumed being the keyword. It was the only way she could describe it. It made her want to avoid people, to curl up into a ball and not talk to anyone for the rest of the day. As much as that desire nagged at her, tugged at her in the back of her brain, she ignored it. It wasn't healthy, or at least that's what WebMD told her once.

Jasmine sat there for a time. You could say that she was curled up in a ball, hugging her knees, head tucked, staring off into space. She was in her own little world. Away from the library, away from Lily and Coleen, away from everything, alone with her own thoughts. She tried not to think about it, the situation she was in. The blood...

... Mr. Graham was always so nice to her, too. So why, why did they, why...

"... Huh?" Jasmine rose her head. She blinked her misty eyes, dabbed them with her sleeve. "Oh. Um, no. I tried not to watch it when it was on."

It was funny how, when she pictured SOTF in her head, she still thought of it as a show. Something you could just tune out, turn off. It made her squirm inwardly and she looked away from Lily. Her eyes landed on Coleen as she... she ate a bunch of crackers? Wait, where did she get those? Did she bring them with her?

"Sorry Lily," Jasmine apologized. Because she truly was sorry, for everything. She gave a small nod towards Coleen, just as a gesture, maybe she's seen it? "Why did you wanna know?"

... Jasmine said nothing. She opened her mouth and it looked like she was about to say something, but she ended up closing her mouth soon after. She sat there, staring at Lily. A single bead of sweat formed at the side of her head. Lily looked at her, she looked at Lily. It was awkward, the silence that ensued, an unintended faux pas on Lily's part. The girl was clearly trying to keep her mind in the game. And no one would blame Lily for doing that, not even Jazz. But Jasmine wanted to keep her mind off of it.

Jasmine thought to herself. There was a tremble in her hand. Her pupils dilated, breath coming in quick, erratic bursts. Of course she remembered the clip. How could she possibly forget it? Just the way that one kid turned his back on his friends, on what he did. She didn't need Lily to remind her of that. How stupid did Lily think she was?

She snapped out of it. Then she scowled. Jasmine was a visual learner, and her mother taught her how to bandage a wound before Physical Education even touched on first aid. Her mom took Jasmine on a few camping trips, in tents. She wasn't an expert, but even she could see that Lily did not wrap her wound up right. A voice in her head told her to get up and rebandage it, jeez, she can't go around like that, what if she gets an infection? She ignored that voice.

Another voice told her to leave it. Just let her get an infection. It was a bitter voice. She ignored that one too.

Wait, Lily... Lily wasn't looking at her anymore. The girl gestured towards an office. There was a doorway behind the library counter, and a long window gave Jasmine a look in on it. She also noticed another door, on the customer side of the counter. It lead into the office, though Jasmine did not know this. Obviously the people who built the library expected anyone to be dumb enough to climb over the counter.

"I don't mind," Jasmine said. "Do you mind if I come with?"

Alright, come on Jasmine. Let's get our head in the game, come on, let's do it. She stood up suddenly, hand pawing for her bag. That's when she saw the characters written in white script on the side - G52. Just a number and a letter. Disposable. Jazz looked up, a smile easing onto her lips. Yeah. Let's look in the office Jazzy, maybe it'll help you stop thinking. About the blood...

... Yeah. Lily was a nice girl, but like hell you're going in there alone. Just smile and get along like you always do. Just flip the switch like you do back in school. Just swallow back your fears and make believe.

"Hey, Coleen?" She said suddenly. She waved at the girl who, for all intents and purposes, was in her own little world too. So Jasmine wasn't the only one. "You wanna join us? Maybe we'll find something there!"

"Oh," she said, "heh, well, if they took all of your pens and papers, I suppose they must have taken all my art supplies too. That's lame."

The pout was a ruse too. Her voice was a bit too downtrodden, the corners of her lips pulled a bit too far down. It wasn't intentional. Jasmine's done this sorta thing so many times that it was all but natural. Back at school, maybe there was nothing wrong with faking a smile. But Jasmine went from grinning to pouting in six seconds flat. Something about that wasn't going to sit right with anyone not named Jasmine Reed.

She slung her bag over her shoulder before making her way through the door. Jasmine turned and waved at Coleen. She even flashed a tiny grin. She assumed that alone would ease whatever nerves the girl might have had. Coleen's mileage might vary on that though. The office was small. Jasmine pressed her back against the wall, giving the office a scan. She noticed the open door leading out to the counter. It all clicked for her, and that made her pout even harder.

"So like, what kind of paper are you looking for?" Jasmine said, opening a drawer to one of the desks in the cramped office. Empty. She reached for the second drawer. "Any kind that you can write on?"

It occurred to Jasmine that she had no idea why Lily even needed pen and paper. What could she possibly need to write? It also occurred to her that she had turned her back on Lily so, uhh, she was gonna rectify that by glancing at Lily over her shoulder.

If anyone were to point out Jasmine's smile, she would claim that she was trying to cheer up the room. Make things less grim and dusty, you know? Nevermind the fact that it is having the complete opposite effect. It's one of those smiles that, were she breaking it out back home, it would be way less unnerving. But neither Lily and Coleen were going to mention it, it seems. Coleen didn't even bother to follow the two of them inside of the room! That made Jasmine pout, the kind of pout a bratty kid uses when they aren't getting their way. Arms crossed under her chest, back pressed against the nearest wall, Jasmine's gaze swapped between LIly and the open doorway. She even gave an impatient huff.

Well. Perhaps that pout wasn't quite as faked as it looked. As far as Lily knew, this was just the way Jasmine expressed herself.

"... sounds like you've put a lot of thought into this," Jasmine said, impressed. "Cae told me you were smart, but you're operating on a completely different level."

Was Jasmine being genuine? Or was she being sarcastic? It was really hard to tell; after all, her behavior so far could easily be described as 'hyperbolic'. Plus, Jasmine mentioned Caedyn, and while she meant nothing by the name drop, she should have been well aware of Lily's history with the girl. Jasmine's lips creased, thinking about her, about Caedyn. Where was she? Just thinking about her, even in a dangerous situation like this, made Jasmine's heart swell and her knees tremble. She hoped Caedyn was alright. She hoped all of her friends were alright, but Caedyn especially...

. . .

"... Huh?" Jasmine shook her head. "Um, yeah, that... sounds like a good idea."

Lily continued, mentioned something about inventory? Obviously Jasmine was not paying as close attention as she would have liked. She opened another drawer and, hidden in the very back, she produced an old pen. She wasn't even sure if it worked or not. She shook it with her hand, trying to wrench a bit of cobweb off of her hand. Yuck! She hated spiders!

"Um, d'ya think this will work?" Jasmine said, holding the pen out to Lily.

... Jasmine could not stop herself from turning her head and peeking through the window just to see if Coleen was still there. Clearly her priorities were in the right place. Her eyes narrowed. Her hand balled up into a fist. She relaxed it soon after, but the anger still churned in her belly. Ugh. That was so rude. Jasmine hated when people were rude like that.

The pen, though. Lily didn't take the pen. Jasmine was confused at first, but now she had an idea of what Lily meant by 'check if you aren't sure'. What, did she think Jasmine poisoned the pen?? Because the point was dull. Jasmine wasn't going t be stabbing anyone with a pen. The thought didn't even occur to her, until now.

Jasmine grunted. She snatched the piece of paper, mold be damned, and rubbed the pen back and forth. It took a minute, and it was faint, but there was still ink. The pen still worked.

"There. It works."

There was no hint of spite in her voice, but it was clear she was irritated by something. Why was Jasmine irritated? Because of Coleen? Of Lily? Not even Jasmine was sure why, she just was irritated. They were just tangential.

"She could have told us she was leaving," Jasmine added, because she could not not say anything. "It wasn't like we were holding her hostage."

...

"Okay."

She spoke so low there was no way Lily heard her.

The walls of the room were closing in. Her legs shook, knees buckling under an invisible weight on her shoulders. Her breath was becoming shallow. She wanted to scream.

Jasmine Reed was on the verge of a meltdown and she didn't know it.

She was afraid to be alone. Maybe she couldn't trust Lily or even Coleen, but at least she knew they weren't going to stab her in the back right out of the gate! At least she knew who they were. At least she knew they were there. The anxiety she felt about Lily leaving, and so soon after Coleen ran away, was on the same level as the glass shard and the blood, possibly even more so. She didn't know why, it just was.

She was more afraid of being judged. Lily must think Jasmine is a nutcase, that must be why she's leaving. Jasmine couldn't run after her and ASK to come along, Lily will think she's clingy. She'll think Jasmine is a goddamned creeper. And the last thing Jasmine wanted, even on Murder Island, was to look like a creeper.

Her hand trembled. Agitation, anxiety, humiliation, so many feelings prickling her skin and lacing her veins, her thoughts were so loud she couldn't hear her mout. God she was such a fucking baby, for Christ's sake don't cry Jasmine please don't cry.

"Gosh,Jazzy. Don't cry. Everything's okay you knucklehead. Don't cry."

... Jasmine was on the brink, standing over the edge, her shit nearly lost. But she found a pocket of air, a life preserver. Her lost friend. The only person in her life who has always been there for her.

Caitlyn.

"... Hey. Lily, wait."

Jasmine made it to the library counter, catching Lily before she could leave. She waved to Lily, flagging to her, hoping that she wouldn't just ignore her.

"Thanks," Jasmine said. Her throat felt scratchy. "I'll see you later, okay?

...To her credit, Jasmine sounded genuine, and her smile was earnest. But if Lily wanted to know what Jasmine was thanking her for... Well. You don't always get what you want.

Jasmine watched as Lily walked out of the library. After that? Nothing. Jasmine just stood there. Let the silence drown her. The white noise settling over the library made her ears buzz.

The scared part of her mind wanted to go after Lily. She didn't know if Lily was trustworthy, or whether or not she wanted company. She didn't even know Lily all that well back home. Jasmine just didn't want to be alone. But she could not run after Lily. Something in her mind weighed her feet down and diamonized the rest of her body. No matter how much she wanted to, she could not move. It was that part of her brain that made her anxious in crowded areas or made her stammer and look like an idiot whenever she was talking to someone cute. She didn't know why, it just was.

Eventually her body laxed. She could move again. And the first thing she did was fall back onto the floor and curl up in around the same spot she woke up in.

Crying was understandable. She could cry as much as she wanted, because as far as she knew she was alone. No one could see her, nobody was around to judge. It did not occur to her that the numerous cameras around the library were very much working and were recording every little thing she was doing. Nothing really occurred to her.

Nothing, save for the pair of arms that wrapped around her, encased her.

Jasmine knew who it was. And as much as she wanted to chastize herself, because she was really being childish at this point, she couldn't. Truth be told she was thankful for that hug. It did nothing to stop the torrent of tears and a dribble of snot rolling down her top lip, but the embrace was warm, she even felt a squeeze.

The hug could not stop Jasmine Reed from crying her heart out like a stupid idiot.

Even so. It was nice, knowing she wasn't truly alone.

(Jasmine Reed continued in Helvetica Standard.)
