((Alvaro Vacanti, continued from Bad Days, Bad Moods, Bad Burgers))

And there was the ice cream, in lane two. Alvaro opened the freezer door and grabbed it, taking it out and closing the door as quick as he could. He slowly lowered the tub into the bottom of the trolley, grabbing his shopping list and moving it out of the way. That was another item off the list, although he still had a considerable amount more to go. He was about halfway through, but it seemed that most of the stuff he still had to get (fruits and vegetables, for the most part) was in one section of the grocery store. He took the pen out of his pocket, and ticked ice cream off the list, before heading out to the main section of the store. It was cold here, even with the freezer door closed, so Alvaro decided that he was going to figure out his plan of action somewhere else.

He walked through the aisle, looking at the other people who walked past him with their trolleys. Nobody he knew from school, nobody he knew who worked at the cafe. It was a little surprising, to be honest, but today was his first time shopping for the family so he wasn’t really surprised that something he thought would happen didn’t. The Vacanti’s didn’t go shopping that much, mostly because they didn’t cook that often. It was a little surprising, them owning and working at a cafe and all, but when it came to all of them sitting at the dinner table, nobody really wanted to cook after a day of either cooking or working. They generally ordered take-out instead, and they shopped for only the basics that they couldn’t take from the cafe; salt, pepper, fruit, and other desserts.

He was at the front of the store now, close to the counters. He wasn’t quite sure what was going to happen when he had to leave the store with his things. Was he allowed to take the trolley home with him? He wasn’t quite sure; again, he hadn’t gone shopping before and he had no real idea of what the procedures were. He tapped his pointer finger on the handle of the trolley. What would happen if he did something wrong? Would he be laughed at? Reprimanded? Were there fines he had to pay for not following the right grocery etiquette? He looked around, partially looking for where he had to go next and partially trying to figure out what he had to do when he had finished.

He started taking a couple of steps towards the fruit and vegetable section of the store, feeling the trolley reluctantly going with him. He still wasn’t quite sure what he had to do, but he had a faint idea, at least.

Alvaro hummed along to the music as he walked towards the fruits and vegetables section, his eyes looking elsewhere, trying to see if he could find any other people he knew. Even outside of school he knew a couple of people through the cafe (although they were far less regular customers and didn’t really talk to him that much), so he figured that he’d find someone if he looked hard enough. He questioned a little bit how much people went shopping for groceries, he knew that his mom usually went around every two weeks, but they didn’t need to buy food that much, and food seemed to comprise most of the shelves here. Hmm, maybe he’d ask one of his cafe friends next time they appeared, he was interested enough in the question to ask it. Plus, as someone studying how to run a business he should probably know about customers a bit more. Maybe study demographics a bit more.

He also noticed that most of the people shopping were much older than he was. Was he the only kid who was doing their parents shopping for them?

The arm of Darius Van Dyke suddenly patting his shoulder answered that question for Alvaro. Alvaro was… not that fond of Darius. He was a jerk, and while him and Alvaro usually didn’t interact much it was pretty clear that Darius liked to pick on him. And other people too, apparently, judging by his comment about Bart. Alvaro looked around, trying to see if there was a way he could get out of here, but he doubted that there was any escape here. It seemed that he had to enter conversation with someone he really didn’t want to talk to.

Okay Alvaro, you can do this. Breathe in, breathe out, then:

“I… probably shouldn’t. I should probably eat a little healthy, being on the soccer team, and all.” He didn’t turn around, mostly because Darius’s hand was still on his shoulder.

“Oh! Hi, by the way.”

“...Excuse me?” What did Darius mean when he said that Alvaro was high? Was that a good thing? Was that a bad thing? He wasn’t quite sure. There were a couple words that his classmates liked to use that he still had no idea about the meaning of. What did Cadeyn mean when she said that she “shipped” two people together, for instance? He didn’t know, and he wasn’t going to ask anytime soon. Knowing Cadeyn it probably wasn’t something he would like. Another word he wasn’t quite sure what the meaning was was “high.” Was Darius mocking him? Alvaro looked around. Again, there wasn’t really any route of escape. Even if there was, Darius would mock him for taking it. Even if it was behind his back, he knew that he’d do it, and Alvaro didn’t like that. No. He had to get out of here in a way that was natural and wouldn’t result in Darius mocking him.

Luckily for Alvaro, a third person came down the aisles, saying hi to him. He looked up, and it was Scarlett! She was someone that Alvaro knew from school, and she went to the cafe, but he had never gotten the chance to talk to her, much. He either had to work at the counter that day or he had more customers whenever she arrived, it seemed. But still, she was a good presence. She was nice, and while he didn’t know much more about her than that, it was good enough for him, especially with Darius behind him.

As she approached both of them, she said hi (to which he responded with a wave) and asked if Darius was bothering him. Alvaro looked behind him, before looking back at her? Should he tell the truth? That Darius said that he was high and he didn’t know what that meant? Wait, no. If he did that then she’d likely knew what it meant and then she’d likely laugh at him for not knowing, so he couldn’t say that. He had to lie, as much as he didn’t want to. She was nice, she deserved the truth, but it was better for him to lie.

“Um… No.” He replied.

“...No we weren’t?” Alvaro had no idea what Darius was talking about. Darius just kinda came up to him while he was shopping and tried bothering him, they didn’t choose to do… whatever he said they were doing together. Was this another way of mocking Alvaro? Was this a joke or something he shared between himself and Scarlett? He didn’t really interact with them much in school, so it was entirely possible that they were super close friends or something. He hoped that wasn’t the case. If the person he thought was going to help him out here was actually in on the joke that would make getting away from Darius that much harder.

But apparently Scarlett wasn’t in on the joke. She apparently had no idea what Darius meant. Of course it was still possible that this was a trap meant to lull Alvaro into a sense of false security, but that seemed unlikely. Well, Scarlett was smart enough to think of that, but… he didn’t know. He didn’t want to insult Darius, but there was something about him that made Alvaro doubt his abilities. He wasn’t dumb, or anything, but Alvaro didn’t know. There was a word that he could use but it just wasn’t coming to his mind.

He looked and turned his head between the two until he noticed someone hanging out near the zucchini. Hey, another person he knew from school! Ben was someone he shared a few classes with, and the fact that he was on the anti-bullying committee meant that he could be trusted. He also came to the cafe with his sister, occasionally! He didn’t talk to Alvaro much, but his association with his sister (who wanted Alvaro to teach her how to play chess, not the best way to learn it, but Alvaro still liked it nonetheless) meant that he could pretty easily be called a friend. He called out from where he was.

“Hey, Ben!”

...What?

Darius had just told Alvaro to shut up. He had just told Alvaro to shut up. It was true then. Darius hated him. He hated him and thought that he was annoying and thought that he was an idiot and didn’t even want to make fun of him, just wanted to say outright how much he hated Alvaro. There was no escape now. He had to face what Darius had to say. If he tried to move away then Darius would mock him and even if he couldn’t hear it it’d still be terrible. Getting insulted right in his face was bad, but the idea that someone could be mocking or making fun of him without him knowing about it just scared him. He knew that they were doing it as well. Darius did it, Isaac did it; but it was a matter of who else did it, who else did it behind his back. What was Scarlett actually like? Was Ben as nice to him at home as he was at school? He didn’t know, and that was the scary part.

And then Darius made the joke about his arms and he legitimately wanted to be anywhere but here. He took a step back, and turned his head away slightly so that he couldn’t see Darius. He could feel his hand start to quiver. He wanted to say something back, tell Darius how that wasn’t right and how he didn’t appreciate his bullying, but he couldn’t form the words. Why were things like this? What was wrong with him? What did he do to give Darius the right to insult and demean him? He didn’t know. He didn’t know and he hated that because he knew that people didn’t like him but not why or how he could change himself so that they liked him. What was wrong with him? Was he too outgoing? Did he not sound right? Was it because he didn’t have to shop for things that they didn’t have to? He didn’t know, and it was racking his head. There were so many possibilities for what was wrong with him and he didn’t know which ones they were and he just needed to get out of here but he couldn’t because then Darius would mock him and he’d have to go past one of the three so he couldn’t do it without being unnoticed and maybe once he they knew he couldn’t hear they’d laugh at him and why why why was he here why was he doing the shopping why did he stay when he first saw Darius and there were so many things stacking up in his head and he didn’t know how to go about them and he just needed to get out of here and go to the cafe and see Lily or Adelaide or Barry or someone. Yes. Good Idea. Not something he could do, though.

He heard Scarlett defend him, but he didn’t notice it. He was too busy in his own mind to notice what was going on.

Alvaro heard more things come from other people. He looked up, decided that he was going to hear whatever was said now. If people were going to mock him in front of him he needed to hear them. He needed to know their true feelings towards him, what they really thought about him. He was sure that Darius hated him. None of his friends would make that sort of comment towards him. It was probably a matter of if Ben or Scarlett thought the same. So he looked up. He was in a shopping center, carrying a trolley. He was basically surrounded by them at this point. Odds were he had to face the music sometime or later.

When he did look up, though, it was a little surprise for him that both Ben and Scarlett seemed to be on his side. Ben was getting up in Darius’ face, saying something that Alvaro couldn’t quite get the whole meaning of but could understand slightly. He was acting his role as an Anti Bullying Committee member and was seemingly protecting Alvaro. It was still entirely possible that Ben was protecting someone that Alvaro didn’t like but right now Alvaro and him were definitely on the same side. He turned around, trying to see where Scarlett was, and she had moved, slightly. She told Alvaro that he could escape freely now, if he wanted to.

He almost wanted to take that offer and get away from Darius as soon as he could, but there was something he was doubting about the offer. Why was she allowing him to escape? Did she want him gone? Why so? Was she allowing him to leave so that she could talk freely about him without “hurting his feelings” or something like that? He didn’t buy it. As much as he didn’t want to, he was staying here.

“Um… I still kinda need to get stuff from this section,” he said, turning his head between Scarlett and the fruits and vegetables section. It was true that he still needed to get his family’s shopping, but at this point the only reason he was still here was that he didn’t trust Scarlett.

“Oh no… um… it’s fine.” Wait no no no no Scarlett was somebody he could trust wasn’t she? He cringed, slightly, feeling the slight tingle and pinprick spread all over his skin. She was genuine. She genuinely wanted to help him get away from Darius and he was an idiot for believing that she wanted to trick him. She just wanted to help and now he blew it because he was an idiot who thought that she was trying to trick him for who knew what reason and now she was stuttering and seemed offended and it was all his fault for not being able to trust her. He had to make it up to her, somehow. Maybe say sorry or do something that meant sorry or really anything that showed that he was sorry and alvaro she’s right there in front of you why don’t you just say sorry now.

“Um, sorry if I sounded harsh, I just-”

And then Darius gave one last jab as Alvaro as Ben took him away. He ignored it, or tried to anyway. He heard the words, and very nearly grabbed his arm in anticipation, but he didn’t. Instead, he just looked forward, away from Darius, at Scarlett. She was genuine, she wanted to help him get away, so he looked at her. Breathed. In, Out.

Soon, she started talking again, and Alvaro soon calmed down. He didn’t know why or what it was, but there was just something… about the way she spoke that meant that she couldn’t be of any harm. She said that she could leave him alone, if she wanted him to. He kinda waved his arms around a little at that, just so she wouldn’t leave.

“You can stay if you want! Really, I kinda appreciate you being here.” Wait, was he blushing? Hopefully not, it’d be a little awkward if he was. He wasn’t sure what would happen if he gave Scarlett the wrong impression and he didn’t really want her to think that he liked her or anything. “Oh, um, sorry. Not in.. um.. that way.”

Oh god no now that he had said that he had made everything worse for him. Now Scarlett actually thought he was in love with her, saying that she didn’t really think of him in that way and that she was okay with them just being friends. He waved his hands in the air for a bit. He had to explain. He had to make sure that Scarlett didn’t get the wrong idea about what he said. If he didn’t or left now then she’d probably actually be convinced that he liked her and he knew he didn’t want her thinking that. If she ended up thinking that then she’d probably be too scared of him to go to the cafe and then he’d lose a friend and he certainly couldn’t have that so he had to say something.

“Wait, no, no, not like that!” He said quickly, waving his hands out in front of him. “I don’t actually like you, um,” Wait, no. No no no no no. Poor wording there. Now she probably thought he didn’t like her or something, which was arguably just as bad as her thinking he liked her. Quick, he needed to say something. Fix what he just said.

“Wait, no, poor wording there,” he said, turning his head and looking at everything in the room except for her eyes. “What I mean is that I’m not in love with you or anything like that. There’s a girl that I have a crush on, but it’s, um, not you.” Was there any other way to word that? He didn’t really know. Furthermore, why did she think he liked her? He was pretty sure he said that he didn’t like her in that way before she gave that response. Should he ask why? He didn’t know. Maybe. Probably. Yes. Best to ask her why so that she knew that he didn’t really think of her that way.

“Wait, why did you think I’m in love with you?” He asked, making sure to use a more elaborate wording so that there wasn’t any more confusion. “I said, um, before that I didn’t like you in that way.”

Wait, did he sound forceful there? Hopefully he didn’t. He didn’t want to like, attack Scarlett or anything and he certainly didn’t want to give her any more wrong ideas at this point.

((SO sorry for how long this took))

Okay, she believed him. That was good; now he could leave if he wanted to. Did he want to do that, though? It’d mean he could get out of his situation if he wanted to but then he’d leave Scarlett by herself. Apparently she wanted to be friends with him, which could be literal or could mean that she just wanted to talk casually with him or could mean that she didn’t really care about him but wanted to save face. Alvaro didn’t know which; he tended to lean towards the negatives but this time all had their possible proof or evidence or something. Best not to think about it now. Best just to respond. He felt weird thinking that but he felt that it was the best option. She wanted to talk, and it’d look really weird if he flat-out just didn’t respond to her.

But what to say? No answer to that question was appearing in Alvaro’s head. As much as he didn’t want to insult her or anything that was a weird thing to ask and anything that came out would just sound super awkward. Not as awkward though as not saying anything at all.

Quick, Alvaro, say something. Anything. Throw the beachball of conversation over to her so that she becomes friendly with you.

“I’d be… um… okay with being your friend,” he said, looking around. Was there any way to answer that without sounding strained? He doubted it. Still, best to at least throw the reins.

“Do you want to… talk about anything?” He continued, confused expression on his face as he stared at Scarlett.

Okay. Okay. Okay. She was talking to him. She didn’t just make excuses or leave or anything like that. He knew that that was a kinda silly possibility but it certainly had happened before and he did have to admit he had done it once or twice. Not to get away from the person, mind you, but mostly because he felt kinda overwhelmed by the people there and needed to take a break and sit down somewhere. That wasn’t like, bad or anything, was it? It was at least better than if he just pretended to have a call just to get away from someone he didn’t like. Well, doing what he did was probably not okay but at least it was out of necessity! Wait, no, that certainly didn’t make it better. Really wouldn’t saying it out of necessity be just deflecting the responsibility? He didn’t know. He’d have to think about this later.

Wait, whoops, Scarlett was talking to him, wasn’t she?

“I am! Kinda.” Alvaro replied to Scarlett. It was a little odd that she mentioned chess. Why was it that whenever he got into a conversation with someone he didn’t really know they always brought up chess with him? He wasn’t sure. Yet another question he’d have to think the answer for later.

“I’d say that I’m better at chess than most people, but um… most people who are better at chess than most people are better than me, if that makes sense?” That certainly wasn’t the best way to explain the situation, so maybe he could do a little bit better. “Like, I’m on the chess team, but whenever we go to a tournament I tend to get eliminated early while someone else gets a win.”

Which was something he wanted to improve. Maybe he should read those chess books that Lily gave him, maybe they’d help him become better at the game.

So then they talked for a bit. Mostly about chess. There were a couple asides about how school was going for the two of them but most of the conversation was dominated about what Alvaro knew about chess. It kinda felt a little bit weird, to be honest. Normally when he talked with someone he barely ever brought his own experiences up - he highly doubted that they’d appreciate it if he made the conversation all about himself - but he was talking about chess with Scarlett and suddenly he was telling her a lot of what he knew about it. It was kinda fun, though. It made him feel… well, he didn’t know the word, but it just kinda gave him good feelings about himself as they talked while they were shopping together. Maybe he’d talk about himself more when he was around someone he knew liked him. Probably not Lily or someone like that but someone he could at least trust.

Alas, though, all good things had to come to an end. Eventually both of them had gotten everything they needed and they went their separate ways; Scarlett to her dad, Alvaro back to the cafe. He hoped that they got to speak again at some point, even if it was only for a couple seconds.

((Alvaro Vacanti, continued in I can't think of any cutesy love songs that'd fit as a thread title, consider this a placeholder))
