“Baby, I'm just gonna shake, shake, shake, shake, shake, I shake it off, shake it off.”

((Alvaro Vacanti: Begin))

Alvaro was currently sitting on the counter of the café, moving his leg and humming along with the music. This happened to be a song that appeared on the radio commonly, and he was able to familiarize himself enough with the song to know all the lyrics. He liked it, in particular noting the instrumentation as something that kept itself in his ears long after listening to it. It wasn’t his favourite of the rotation of songs, though; that “Uptown Funk” song did what this song was trying to do better, and it seemed that his close friends agreed. Both songs seemed to have taken the world by storm. He wondered if either song would end up being forgotten, as many others had. He shrugged at himself. Time would likely give him the answer, plus, there were more important things to do now, the other students would likely be arriving soon, and he’d need to be prepared for them.

Plus, the song had at this point ended, and gone on to somebody talking. Now was a time as ever to get motivated.

He looked around, at the café, the tables, the empty chairs. He smiled, slightly. This was the place that shaped his life, changed it. It allowed him to start his life in riches, gave him an education. It made him move to Kingman, caused the paranoia to start. He tried to improve, to get out of that cycle, but it got worse. It seemed, that every time he talked to a person, he kept questioning why they were talking to him, and what motives they had. He sometimes thought that people hated him, were just lying to him to keep up their appearances and take advantage of his father’s café. It probably wasn’t true, that’s what he kept telling himself, he was being paranoid and he shouldn’t have to worry; but the thought kept coming back into his mind, like a-

Oh.

Right.

Café.

He jumped out of the counter, and got the notepad and pen from next to him. He clicked it, saw the point came up. The first customers were here, and he had to be ready for them.

The door opened.

Breathe in, breathe out.

Then:

“Heya, welcome to Vacanti's! What can I do for you today?”

The door opened fully, and Alvaro could now tell who his first customer was.

Adelaide Walker was certainly someone he knew, carrying a high class status with her around school. Her family was rich, and he was thankful for that, with them being frequent customers to his café. With money to throw away, as well; the Walkers always ordered tall, basically making the Vacanti's slightly richer every time they came, which Alvaro was thankful for. He knew that not everyone shared the same opinion on her as him, though, with some people he knew attacking her attitude that she was better than them and that everyone should follow everything she said. He felt the same way, kinda, sometimes thinking she was a snob in the way she acted and carried herself.

But hey, did it matter? She was willing to tolerate him and pay for service, so he didn't mind if she did that. So long as it didn't affect him, he was fine with it.

She made her order, asking for the specials and for some iced water. He checked the blackboard on the side, and recited what was on it, but not before writing the order for water on his notepad.

"Uh... let's see." He adjusted his glasses, despite not needing to. It was just a habit for him that he picked up.

"After school specials for today are custard tarts, caramel slice and strawberry cheesecake."

He turned back to Adelaide, and noticed her flipping her braid back. He noticed her natural beauty, with her long hair, lean body, and brown eyes. He was reminded about his future, in a way, when he saw that. Vacanti's was a family business, and he had to carry on the family name. While he, personally, wasn't attracted to her, he was reminded of some of the people who he did have romantic interest in, and of Uncle Al, who kept urging him to get a girlfriend. Al was working the counter, and when Alvaro looked at him, he seemed to be focused on something on his computer.

Eh, he might as well be kind to the girl. It's what Al would be telling him to do.

"Oh, by the way, we have extra stocks, so milkshakes are 25 percent off, today."

She ordered the cheesecake. Alvaro nodded, and took her order on his notepad. It shouldn't be too hard to remember, and since she was the first in, she got to have hers quickly. He ripped the page out of his notepad and took it to the metal hole in-between the serving room and the kitchen. Normally he would go out and give it to the cook face to face but he was talking to a guest and suddenly breaking conversation would be rude and she wouldn't like him. Ice Water and Cheesecake for Adelaide, shouldn't be too hard to remember.

She then asked him a question, about his working at the café. His family had made him work here since he was fifteen. Said it was to teach him work ethic and that it was to prepare him for taking over the café full time. He didn't mind, he could always use whatever other time he had to study and practice chess. He didn't have much else that would require him to be here full time.

"Yeah, my parents make me work here everyday." He paused, "They figure that since I'm their son, they can pay me slightly less than the average worker."

He hoped that his attempt at a joke passed.

"I don't mind it though. It allows me to talk to new people and prepares me for when I take over this place." He moved his arms up, signifying the rest of the café.

The door opened again, and Lily Caldwell entered.

Heeeee

Liked her, he guessed? He didn't really know why, to be honest. But there was something about her that attracted him to her? She was short, flat chested, scrawny; that wasn't why he liked her. It might be personality, he guessed? That might be it. Doesn't matter anyway, the lady's there and Al would want you to serve her.

"Lily! What would you like to order today?" He said rather quickly. Hopefully she wouldn't notice. That would make things super awkward for him and likely trigger the paranoia.

Alvaro had heard Adelaide's question, but didn't pay much attention to it, simply nodding. Instead, he had gotten his notebook out, and was writing Lily's order on it. He ripped the page out of his notepad, and he put it in the metal hole. Ice water and cheesecake for Adelaide, cheesecake for Lily, not much harder than what it was previously, although he hoped that he didn't mess it up; he'd look like an idiot and he'd be doing it in front of the girl he loved, as well.

Lily asked what they were talking about, and Alvaro responded in kind. "We were talking about my job, nothing too interesting." Wait, didn't Adelaide ask something earlier?

"Oh right, yeah, that's the plan. My parents have drilled it into me ever since I moved here." He smilied, slightly, although he was panicing inside. Why didn't you answer her earlier? What if she now thinks you're asleep in the head now? She'll still likely come here but now she won't think you're good enough to talk to now!

Wait, no, keep it together, Alvaro. Breathe in, breathe out. Breathe in, breathe out.

"Also, once you've finished, go to the desk and give the money to Uncle Al."

Adelaide decided to leave the situation, and sat down at a table. He wasn't quite sure why, but he assumed it was because he had been rude and she didn't want to talk to him right now. Don't worry about it, Alvaro, just act nice to her from now on and it shouldn't be a problem for you.

He started paying attention to Lily now, apparently she forgot about something earlier? She reached into her bag, and got out some chess books, apparently they were second hand and

Wait

Is she giving them to you?

Is she giving you a gift?

She is! Wait wait wait wait wait, this must mean something. Nobody would give you a gift if they hated you, Alvaro. This means that she at least likes you. Even with this, this means that you could possibly

Ding!

A bell rang.

"Wait, hang on a moment, Lily." Alvaro turned around, looked at the metal hole. There were two plates with cake on them (with each of them making about... one eighth of the whole thing? Alvaro wasn't good at maths) andone of them having a cup full of iced water. Both of their orders were ready, and it was... cake and water for Adelaide and just cake for Lily. Yeah, that sounded right.

He grabbed one piece and the iced water, and walked over to where Adelaide was sitting.

"There you go." He said in a singsong tone as he placed both on the table. He walked back, got the spare piece and gave it to Lily.

"And there you go."

Lily seemed to drop the subject of the books, but she thanked him for the cake! That was good, right? She asked if they could play chess again sometime. This had to be good, right? Wanting to be with you must mean she doesn't hate your guts! She likes you Alvaro, you can stop being paranoid about her now.

Then Adelaide came in, asking for more cutlery.

Um.

Whoops.

Uh....

He realized that he looked unprofessional now, and now hoped that Adelaide didn't care about it too much. He was trying not to spark up his paranoia, trying not to panic. Breathe in, breathe out.

"Whoops, hang on a moment, Lily." He broke from the conversation and took several forks out of the kitchen, and started to place them on the table. He hoped that nobody came in during this time.

Alvaro kept placing cutlery on the table. Forks and spoons, no knifes. Knives weren’t needed yet in the afternoon menu, and if somebody actually needed or wanted them they could just go to the counter and ask for one. Why did they have actual knives anyway? None of the dishes really need them, they didn’t serve steaks or anything, and the knives could be used as weapons. Plastic knives were enough. Hmm, maybe he should talk to his dad about replacing the real knives with plastic ones, they wouldn’t need to be cleaned and it could improve work safety!

But still, he had to continue his job. He was halfway through putting cutlery on the tables. He reached Adelaide’s table, and he noticed the books on them. Science? Not something Alvaro could help with. It was one of the subjects that he found was easy at first, but injected so many new concepts into it to the point where he couldn’t recognise it for what it originally was.

He couldn’t help her with her science homework, but there was one way that he could potentially help her.

“There’s cutlery on your table now, Adelaide!”

He wasn’t sure if “helped” was the right word there. Oh well, he knew what he meant.

Adelaide went back to her table, sitting down to eat her cake. He hoped she enjoyed it. It was a new recipie that they were trying out and if there was positive feedback to it they could easily start selling it as a regular. She smiled at him, which he presumed was good. He didn't really want to think about the possibilities of what it meant, so he decided to try to stay calm about it. Besides, now he was alone with Lily, and he could probably make that a good thing.

"No, no, it's fine! Really, it is."

He was trying not to sound panicked. He was alone with Lily, which was making it hard for him. He tried to go back to the thing they were talking about earlier. It was the... chess books, right? She had chess books for him that he could borrow and it was a gift.

"We were talking about the chess books earlier, right?"

He still hadn't given cutlery to half the cafe yet, but that didn't matter right now. This may be his chance to talk to her more.

Lily seemed to be shifting from foot to foot. Alvaro didn't know what it meant. Apparently the chess books weren't actually here. Whoops. At least it meant that he didn't have a distraction when he was supposed to be working. That would be disastrous and it'd likely cause the quality of his work and his quality of reading the book to become worse. Reading them now would have been a bad thing. It's a good thing she didn't bring the books. She invited him to read the books with her at a later time, which was neat. He could spend time with her at a time which wasn't now! So long as he didn't mess that up that was nothing but a good thing for him.

She went back to the table, inviting Alvaro along with her. He wanted to accept, but he couldn't. There was still work he had to do around the cafe. He had to make sure that every customer had their order and food ready, and he had to place their needs above his wants.

... Plus, he hadn't given half the cafe cutlery yet, so that's something he should probably do.

"Sorry, I can't study with you." He flung his arms out to indicate what was around him. "Gotta serve everybody else here. I'll join later if today's an empty day, though." He questioned if they knew what he meant. He had a lot of slang that was simply just him trying to shorten cafe stuff down.

He, forks and spoons in hand, went to the other half of the cafe, and started placing them on tables. Fork, spoon. Fork, spoon.

Alvaro kept putting cutlery on the table, and his mind started to make him do it in a rhythm. Fork, spoon. Fork, spoon. Fork, spoon. He probably should actually finish the job now. People were going to start coming in any moment now. Wait, didn’t he think that before? Did he? Eh, it didn’t matter too much to him. In fact, it was probably for the best that he was thinking of this over and over again. It meant that he could stick it to mind. Make it important for him. Well, it was important for him. If his family lost business because he was too busy talking to somebody, that wouldn’t be a good thing. He could lose his job here!

He finished putting the cutlery on the table, just as another student came in.

Jasper was a friend of his, as someone on the soccer team and as someone who went to the café a lot. Other than that, though, they didn’t have much in common. He was someone who spent most of their time on the internet, and Alvaro knew that he had a vlog (whatever that was, anyway). The internet wasn’t something Alvaro was terribly interested in, and he never used it outside of looking at chess videos or for study/homework purposes.

Even as a friend, he was still a customer. Alvaro said the usual.

“Heya Jasper, welcome to Vacanti’s! May I take your order?”

Jasper took his order. Alvaro put it down in his notebook. He didn’t realise that he didn’t have the pen in his hands though and he almost wrote Jasper’s order down with a fork. He hoped that Jasper didn’t see that, that would make things weird. He wrote down the caramel slices on his notepad and put it into the metal hole. His order shouldn’t be too hard to remember, even considering the fact that Jasper was the only one needing an order right now.

He then proceeded to ask about Alvaro’s day. Alvaro didn’t really know how to answer this question, but he did his best.

“It was okay, nothing really interesting happened.”

Jasper was asking him questions; forcing him to elaborate on what he had said earlier. He responded.

“The second thing you said, I didn’t have any tests, no homework due, and nothing was given out to me.” He shrugged.

He felt his hand shaking slightly; he didn’t know why that was happening. He placed his hand over the one that was shaking, and held it still. He breathed in, and then out again.

Jasper went on, talking about how his day sucked. Alvaro smiled, showing that he understood. Did Jasper hate school? He wasn’t quite sure. Jasper then said that he needed to spend more time here.

“Yeah, you s-should.” He was stuttering, he didn’t know why. “It gives me money, and the ability to live a comfortable life here!”

His hand was still shaking, despite his attempts to stop. Was this a panic attack? If it was, he wasn’t sure why he was having it. He kept breathing, trying to calm down.

Alvaro was trying to keep calm, at least for the time being. He knew what was happening to him now; he was starting to have a panic attack. They weren't something he often had, and they weren't something that he would have in this situation, not with someone he was close friends with. Maybe the pressure of serving Lily came in a little late? That probably wasn't the actual reason why, but he'd accept just so that he'd know what was going on with him. But knowing about what caused it was only half the battle, and he needed to stop panicking so that he could focus on what needed to be done. He decided to distract himself by replying to Jasper.

"Yeah, that's what I'm trying to do. Apply for a good university, go back to Mexico so that I can take care of the business back there, and allow dad to live an easy life and take care of things here in Kingman." It wasn't quite working, but it helped, slightly. He wasn't tripping on words, and his hand was shaking less.

But then Jasper noticed his hands.

"Sorry, it's nothing. It's just that sometimes when-" He heard something hit the metal hole.

"Wait on a second!" He said, his voice suddenly raising. He went over to the metal hole and picked up Jasper's order. Caramel Slice and a cup of ice water. He didn't need to remember it, since he was the only person to order. He could see that his hands were getting worse, with him trying not to spill the ice water as it moved around in his hands. He handed it to Jasper.

"Sorry, is it okay if I just go to one of the back rooms for a bit? I'm not really feeling well."

Jasper was fine with him leaving. That was good. Cadeyn also was here, which meant that he didn't have to leave the café without somebody to work it. That was good as well. He walked away from Jasper, to the counter. He told his uncle that he wasn't feeling well. He understood. This had happened before and Al knew what the protocol was when this happened. Al gave Alvaro the key, and patted his shoulder.

"Take care." That was something he normally said when this happened, and he had to use the sick bay for a bit. Well, normal probably wasn't the right word for it, this had happened in the café before about ... three times, maybe? Well, it was normal for about the four times that it had happened, by now.

"Heya, Cadeyn! Try not to blow up the café while I'm in the sick bay, okay?" Cadeyn could be chaotic when she was on her shift, and he was normally the one who had to stop her antics. He hoped that nothing happened when he wasn't here to check on her.

He spared one last look at the café foyer as he opened the door. He looked at Uncle Al, at Lily, Adelaide, Cadeyn, and Jasper. He supposed that this was what his life had become, how the café had changed his life. He supposed that it might be for the better, in a way. He may have become paranoid, distrustful of others, but he made friends, and he was able to construct a life around the café.

It was probably for the best that he moved, in a way. Despite the sappy message that it brought for him, he was happy that he moved, in a way.

He closed the door, and then headed for the sick bay.

((Alvaro Vacanti continued in Havana Escapade))
