So, was thinking a general resource thread would be good for anything that might be useful while creating specific characters.

Opening this up with a segment on Native American names from a book I have. (Credit to the original book in the doc.) Because god knows we don't want a repeat of a certain other Native American character. It has a short explanation of naming conventions followed by a list of names from various tribes.

Nose descriptions are something I've often had to research when writing profiles, so I've found an article that lists the different types. It's not especially scientific, mind you, but it could be a good resource if anyone needs help describing a character's facial features. Here it is!

If you're a huge grammar geek and/or need help on an edge case, I find that the Purdue Writing Lab is pretty good stuff. It's not always where I end up in researching, say, title capitalization conventions, but I'd say four out of five times it has what I'm looking for.

Anyways these lists are very helpful! Thank you very much, everybody.

DOUBLE POST

I bump the thread and bring resources! First, we've all wrestled with naming characters for things, be it SOTF or other writing - wouldn't it be nice if there was a post with all sorts of naming resources, to give a jumping off point whatever you're writing? Well here you go, go nuts! Name lists, surnames, info on naming practises, modern, historical, you name it and it's probably here.

For v6 - and future writing of mine in general - I'm hoping to diversify my cast more than I have in the past, so something else I've found to be super helpful is the blog Writing With Colour - there's a lot of info here on POC perspectives and avoiding stereotypes, and the admins of the blog have an open question policy so while it might take them a while to respond, you can fire queries and concerns at them as you like; should be really helpful for the concept stage as people get ready for v6, I thought.

Edit: Also, looking to improve writing body language? Check this out.

Hi there.

I've been making an unofficial guide to character creation, profile writing and writing in general. One guide I'll be citing is Chuck Wendig's ZERO-FUCKERY QUICK-CREATE GUIDE TO KICK-ASS CHARACTERS. It's a really solid, awesome baseline and it has helped inspire me in the past. If you dread profile writing as much as the regular ol' member then take a peek at this. There are a few other bits and pieces but this is the one I'm foaming at the mouth to advertise.

Also, while this isn't strictly about character creation, necessary shoutout to Thunderdome. Thunderdome is a weekly short story competition over on Something Awful, where over two baker's dozens of writers go in and only one comes out. I've been participating for close to a year and I love it. (#bloodgarden is chock full of TD inside jokes.) They play kayfabe pretty hard but they aren't malicious, they want to see you improve. Seriously, if you have a SA account or you're okay with ponying up a couple of bucks to get one, you will not regret it. Some of the members here would get along really well with the TD crowd. Plus, you will learn so much about critiquing other people's writing along with improving your own. Plenty of great writers, some of the nicest goons on SA and the most thorough critiques I have ever received. 10/10 would suggest. You can find them at their new thread: Thunderdome 2015teen: Weekly Stories with Positive People.

Thunderdome might be a questionably useful resource since SA often has a paywall up to bar non-registered viewers, and accounts cost $10 - more for the ability to search the forums or send private messages. You also, obviously, can't participate in Thunderdome yourself without an account.

Edit: Ahahaha I was too tired to notice Jeff addressing these points before I replied. Well, might as well leave this post up to note I guess, let no one say I don't admit when I make mistakes.

Check out this super-huge list of resources posted on Tumblr. Some of the links are dead, but the ones that aren't are generally useful.

I second Writing With Color. I've been following it for a while now, and will say it works as a resource. In addition, I recommend How to Fight Write, which is for, as the title suggests, fight scenes. Like WWC, they have an open question policy, so you can ask them something. They're generally pretty informative and detailed in their responses.

One of my favorite websites for this sort of thing is Springhole.net. It's most well-known for its Mary Sue Litmus Test, but the pages on the site are smart and get you thinking on how to write stuff. There's now a section specifically for roleplaying, but one page I particularly like is "Things About Death, Murder, and Dying a Writer Needs to Know" (useful if you're writing a player or your kid's death scene!). There's many other pages on the site as well, as well as fun stuff, so feel free to click around.

I've been seeing plenty of concepts for ballet dancers. See this resource list for help if you're writing one.

I've posted these links before, and here there are again. If you're having a hard time coming up with names, here is a list of the 1000 most common last names in the states. And if you know the last name but not the first name, why not try this tool? Basically you pick nationalities, gender and such, and it randomizes a name for you.

I think that's all the resources from me. For now, that is. : D

Edit- Oops, I lied. Look at this Photographic Height/Weight Chart, for when you need a visual reference for your kid's height and weight.

Thinking we might be starting to have too much tumblr in this thread but hey, if it's useful it's useful. I'll edit more links into this post later. Crossposted from the announcement thread:

And because we now know the location, and it's somewhere none of us have probably heard of, have a nice fancy wikitravel page! Fun for all ages, sure to give you a nice start on what's where. A bit skinny but it'll point you in the right direction.

So there's this Livejournal community called Little Details which is pretty useful for more obscure research. Basically you submit your questions and people answer, plus there's a bunch of interesting stuff there already. I've used it in the past for medical questions for story-writing, they tend to get back to you within a day last I went there. You do have to indicate (generally by listing google searches) that you've tried research on your own already, but it's great for the more obscure questions and the community's been around a while so it probably won't up and vanish too soon.

Regarding demographics in Kingman. For those too lazy to click, here's the basic info.
Wikipedia only has the info for 2000, not 2010, so not really a reliable source.

Population: 28,068 (100%)
White: 24,711 (88.04%)
African-American: 289 (1.03%)
Asian: 469 (1.67%)
American Indian and Alaska Native: 476 (1.70%)
Native Hawaiian and Pacific Islander: 85 (0.30%)
Other: 1,178 (4.20%)
Two or more races: 860 (3.06%)

As for ethnicity:
Hispanic or Latino: 3,503 (12.48%)

I couldn't find anything on poverty in the 2010 census, so I got this from Wikipedia (2000 census):
The median income for a household in the city was $34,086, and the median income for a family was $41,327. Males had a median income of $32,036 versus $21,134 for females. The per capita income for the city was $17,181. About 8.2% of families and 11.6% of the population were below the poverty line, including 15.3% of those under age 18 and 7.9% of those age 65 or over.

Also, if you want to throw politics in the mix, Mohave County (where Kingman is) leaned red most in the 2012 elections, with only 19,533 (27.77%) voting for Obama, while 49,168 (69.91%) voted for Romney, and 1,627 (2.19%) voting for others.
