Welcome to Survival of the Fittest, a RPing board loosely based off of Koshun Takami's Battle Royale, with its own unique plot and spin on the 'deadly game'. We've been around quite a while, and are now in our thirteenth year, so don't worry about us going anywhere any time soon!

If you're a newcomer and interested in joining, then please make sure you check out the rules. You may also want to read the FAQ, introduce yourself and stop by the chat to meet some of our members. If you're still not quite sure where to start, then we have a great New Member's Guide with a lot of useful information about getting going. Don't hesitate to PM a member of staff (they have purple usernames) if you have any questions about SOTF and how to get started!

Hi everyone!

So if you've hung out with me in chat for any number of time you probably know that I'm super into donating blood. It's a great way to give back and it doesn't cost you anything. Kilmarnock and I do it a lot.

I recently downloaded the Red Cross Blood app for my phone and you can join clubs or teams and keep track of how much your particular team gives. I was wondering if anyone would want to join me if I made an SOTF RP blood team as like a community philanthropy project!

Things:

- Americans only since it's an American Red Cross app. Sorry, other countries :( . But feel free to talk about your donations here!
- Gotta have a smart phone for the app.

I'm currently SotF's most prolific donor (I THINK, got my 2 gallon pin a long while ago) but I don't have a smartphone. : C

Was always bothered by the gay rule, but I never could understand why people don't just lie for the sake of saving lives. I remember having a conversation with Aaron waaaay back in the day where he was like "If they're not going to take my blood based on that principle then they don't deserve it" and like, he's right to be angry. I think anybody is. But the person who would eventually receive the blood, they probably DO deserve it, you know?

as a volunteer, i can't lie- everyone involved in the drives in my town knows exactly who i am and that i'm openly gay. if i were to attempt to give blood, i'd receive a lifetime ban from being a donor and may have consequences that would impact my volunteering

i strongly disagree w/ aaron's sentiment there, but it's not queer peoples' responsibility to work around the undue restrictions the Red Cross imposes, it's the Red Cross's responsibility to remove those obstacles

Well, of course. But there ways of removing said obstacles that aren't refusing to donate if possible, because that has other adverse effects harming people who possibly aren't bigoted.

The small community thing, everybody knowing who you are is kind of a special situation and I can't really fight that or do anything with it other than say it doesn't really apply to everybody. I live in a bigger city (as big as you can get in NH, anyway) and if I were gay, I'm pretty sure my phlebotomists wouldn't know.

The Red Cross is really the folks who are in the wrong, at least the people making the rules, but my major point is that if possible, simply being gay shouldn't stop somebody from just fibbing about it if possible. I'm not going to like, CONDEMN you if you choose not to lie (I generally hate lying after all), I just have a hard time understanding it.

Far as I understand, I'm eligible till I do it with another dude, but I'm not sure. So till then. I think there might also be a blood drive organization specifically for gay people, but again, not sure. My school recently had a blood drive, but I wasn't aware of it till after it passed. I'll try my best to volunteer should I get another chance.

by refusing queer people as donors, even in the face of a major blood shortage, the Red Cross is implicitly stating that it doesn't think we're worthy of saving other peoples' lives thru blood donations. why go thru the effort of lying and trying to be a stealth donor if there's a good chance you'll be shamed for it in the end anyway, up to + including a lifetime ban and the humiliation that comes with that? queer people are not harming non-bigoted people by not jumping thru hoops to become donors- that is on the Red Cross, the blood banks and the FDA for keeping those policies in place. they're the ones doing the harm, both to queer people and to anyone in need of donated blood

that being said, i love the red cross. i've been a volunteer for almost 7 years and there's a lot of really phenomenal people in there who are focused on doing good. if you're eligible, please please donate- there's a really dire need for blood rn- and if you're not, you should definitely consider helping in other ways and volunteering if you can. it's actually really fun + rewarding, i promise!

@Persy: yeah, you're not ineligible until you're sexually active. i've read they're considering loosening the restrictions to a year of abstinence before donating (which is still bullshit). i don't think there are queer-friendly drives tho, since there are federal restrictions as well

It is a year of abstinence in the UK, which yes, is still stupid.

I still have a few more weeks to go until I think I'm cleared do donate blood. I was taking antibiotics for my skin that if given to someone who's pregnant may cause birth defects. Once I'ms sure it's completely out of my system I might be interested.

Just weighing in on the debate. I used to be a doner until Aaron was refused when he disclosed that he was openly gay and had a sexual relationship. Canadian Blood Services (Red Cross Canada style) calls me all the time asking me to donate. I donated in high school, and as I have B- blood type, mine is in high demand since it is one of the rarer blood types.

My personal view on this issue is that if I was in an accident tomorrow, I wouldn't give two shits about whose blood was saving my ass. I would just want my aforementioned ass to be saved. Whether my refusal to donate my blood affects anyone hasn't crossed my mind in the least. Blood is screened well in Canada, so the issues about "gay" diseases like HIV/AIDS is ridiculous (and was one of the reasons I was given when I asked about why my friend couldn't donate due to his orientation).

I see what James has said above there about IF you can donate, please do. As hypocritical as this is to say, I want people to donate as well. I 100% support people doing blood drives, raising awareness to the lack of available blood, etc. I've volunteered with CBS a few times to help them, however, I will not directly donate.

I don't consider myself to be the most rah-rah I'm going to fight the system guy out there by any stretch, but if someone is willing to give blood and they are healthy, they should not be refused. Until that is repealed, then my blood will stay in my body (and occasionally staining my hockey jersey).

I pretty much agree with everyone here.

ANYWAY, I won't be participating in any blood drives because I have a very bad fear of blood and needles, even though I am O negative and therefore sorta kinda rare. :c

Not to rain on your parade (and mine, because I'm also O neg), but we're technically the most common out of the negative blood types and thus we're not THAT rare. We are, however, the most useful, so take solace in that.
