Mara wasn't usually the type of person to show affection, so Finn was surprised when she placed her head on his chest. Then again, Finn couldn't blame her for the way she was acting. She had been through a traumatic experience and probably needed some comforting; Finn would have probably reacted the same way if he was in her position. He was about to reciprocate the gesture by wrapping his arms around her, but before he could move, he was interrupted by a sharp downward tug to his collar.

Finn stared back into Mara's dark brown eyes and was met with sudden confusion. Why was she saying that? They were supposed to be friends. They were supposed to have each other's backs and look out for each other. That's what friends do, not proclaim with such certainty that the other person was going to die. Before Finn could retort, Mara began walking away. She couldn't leave him; he'd spent almost his entire time on the island looking for her and after only a few minutes of finding her she was just going to walk away from him.

For a few moments, Finn stood watching Mara walk away with a baffled expression. Tears of both anger and sadness rolled down his cheeks as his hands balled up into fists.

"Well fuck you then!" Finn shouted at Mara with a slight whimper in his voice. "You can go and die too for all I care!"

This of course wasn't true. Finn didn't want Mara to die, he was angry and he wanted to make Mara feel how he felt.

From the corner of his eye, Finn could see Matt staring at him. He quickly turned away from Matt, not wanting him to see the stream of tears running down his face. He faced the pond once again, looking down at Stacy's corpse. He wasn't going to end up like that, he'd show Mara. He was going to survive this and outlast everyone else. No one was going to kill him.

Wiping away his tears, Finn stared into the pond, locating the shotgun that Mara had kicked in. He was going to need that if he was going to go through with his plan. With a final snivel, Finn turned back to face Matt.

"Matt, go get that shotgun in the pond."

Matt couldn't quite hear their conversation. He didn't care to, either, instead favoring to ruminate on how to leverage the situation to his advantage as much as possible. He needed to be tactical, not sentimental. He couldn't let any emotion get in the way of.

Wait.

Why was the stupid bitch leaving?

What was he supposed to feel, in that moment? Anger that he'd dragged Finn around the island in search of his friend, only for her to abandon him at the first chance she got? Relief that he wouldn't be the third wheel, and that his position in the group would remain unthreatened? Worried, that they were lacking in firepower and an easy target to throw in front of larger predators? Sympathy for his compatriot – friend, maybe – who would never see his friend again? Joy because Mara presumably pushed the shotgun into the pond to prevent it from being used, only to walk away when he could dive down and dig it back up?

He didn't want to feel any of them, but there were a lot of things about this island that Matt didn't want.

Matt wanted to do something for Finn, to solace him. It wouldn't matter, in the end, since Finn was going to end up dead, but he still didn't deserve to feel what he was feeling in this moment.

Why was he still so sentimental after nine days?

"On it," Matt replied to Finn, as he began peeling off his clothes. He didn't want to look at his frame, already relatively thin from before. He took everything off and jumped in the water, diving down towards the gun. It hadn't gone very far, and was maybe 8 or so feet below the surface. Matt wasn't a great swimmer, but he was good enough to do this.

As Matt reached for the gun, he thought about the fire in Finn's voice as he barked the order. That fire scared him.

Standing by the edge of the pond, Finn watched Matt as he dove in. The resulting splash caused ripples to lap up against the side of the bank and distort Finn’s reflection in the murky water. He could barely see Matt as he dove down deeper into the depths of the pond. As the ripples subsided, Finn’s reflection returned to normal. His face was almost unrecognisable. The area around his eyes were puffy and blotchy, and the rest of his face was covered in bruises, dirt, dried blood and scabbed over cuts. It was as if someone else was staring back at him from under the surface.

Whilst he waited for Matt to re-surface, Finn began to think to himself. Maybe he should have retrieved the gun on his own. He’d never felt entirely safe when he was around Matt, and that was when he didn't even have a gun. Things could change entirely once he came out of the pond with the shotgun. Matt could be planning to shoot him down as soon as he surfaced. It would be one less person Matt would have to deal with and he would get another gun and extra supplies out of it. Finn couldn't think like that though. Matt had plenty of opportunities to take Finn’s gun and kill him over the past few days, yet he hadn't. He had helped Finn with everything he had asked for and had even helped him trek all over the island to find Mara. In fact if Finn were to compare the two of them, Matt had been a better “friend” than Mara had been to him during their whole time on the island. All Mara had done was abandoned him twice and almost get him blown up by some psycho bitch. Perhaps Finn should start trusting Matt more than he had previously.

Finn walked along the bank, away from Stacy’s corpse and crouched down at a different part of the pond that wasn't caked in her blood. As he saw Matt beginning to surface, Finn stuck his hand into the pond, ready to give him a helping hand.

((assuming GMing is okay here given your last post))

Matt pushed back towards the surface as soon as it was firm in his grasp. He kicked his way up, succumbing momentarily to his primal instinct not to drown, not to die. He was not in danger, yet instinct still took over.

Water splashed all around him as he emerged from the pond, grasping for breath. He had taken in a breathe before he saw Finn's hand, extended forward to help him out of the water. He grabbed Finn's hand and let the other boy help him out of the water. It was probably the first thing Finn had done for Matt since they'd first met at the hospital. Matt smiled, if only internally.

"Thanks."

Once he was back on land, he went over to his bag to grab one of his extra shirts to dry off. He dropped the gun on the ground while he dried off.

"We should probably go somewhere a little more secure," he said as he moved the rough cotton shirt across his body. His body hair was holding onto the water more than he would have liked, but there wasn't much he could do about it. "The town's probably the best bet at this point; the terrorists are going to force us there, anyways. Best terrain for people killing each other and all that. We need to let this dry out, probably replace the magazine, too. I'm not sure how waterproof the cartridges are." He'd gotten himself dry enough, so he put his clothes back on.

He grabbed his bag and the gun, and he walked over to Stacey's bag, marred now with Stacey's blood. It wasn't a pleasant sight; Matt had to fight every urge to flinch and squirm, but the bag had the bullets in it.

"Let me move my stuff into Stacey's bag," he said. He moved his remaining few nutrition bars and his spare clothes into the bag. He also moved the medical kit over, just in case.

They'd done everything they'd needed to here. Finn could have shot him as he came to the surface, but the other boy didn't. It wouldn't make sense to, at this point.

"Let's go"

((Matt Vartoogian continued elsewhere))

Finn flinched as a few specks of water splashed onto his face as Matt emerged from the pond. He wiped away the grimy water from his eyes before gripping onto Matt’s hand. With his second hand now gripping onto Matt, Finn pulled Matt onto the bank. As Matt clambered up the side of the pond, Finn took a few steps back in order to avoid the torrent of brown water that gushed out of the pond with him.

As he watched Matt get dressed, Finn nodded in agreement to Matt’s suggestion to go to the town. Finn wasn't in the mood for talking after what had just happened with Mara, so he didn't bother to oppose to Matt’s idea despite the fact that they should probably be staying away from the place that most of their remaining classmates would be heading. Then again, it might be a good thing that the town would be highly occupied. Surviving in this place meant eventually he would have to kill, and with so few people left, what better opportunity would there be than the hot pocket of students that would be taking refuge in the town? So long as Finn and Matt were careful enough not to be seen and they targeted people who were on their own, then they could pull it off.

However, Finn was planning this all without even asking Matt if he would be okay hunting down and eventually killing their classmates. Matt could turn out to be completely opposed to the idea and refuse to go along with Finn. On the other hand, would Finn really want to continue aligning himself with someone would seemingly throw their life away by refusing to play the game? If that was the case, then Matt would be no longer of use to Finn and he might as well continue on his own. Finn didn't really know how to come out and ask Matt to help him kill their former peers, so he decided to hold on and ask him later once he and figured it all out.

After Matt had moved his stuff into Stacy’s bag and headed out, Finn noticed that he had left her spear. He would never use the spear over his gun if he had the option, but it could come in handy at some point. Finn walked back over to Stacy’s body and picked up the spear that was lying on the ground a few feet away from her. There wasn't anywhere to put the large weapon, so instead Finn used it to support himself as he walked. It appeared that the spear was becoming more useful already; he wouldn't need to use Matt to help him walk anymore.
