((Claire Monaghan continued from O-Lan, You Are the Earth))

Claire rested her head on her hand, sighing as she felt her eyes flutter. It had been a long day, one that involved walking through too much wheat and getting lost repeatedly. She had somehow managed to stumble across the Abandoned Harbor after hours of wandering. The sun had gone down by the time she arrived, and she decided to give up searching for Hansel or any of her friends for the day. If she was going to last a long time in this game, she would have to get as much sleep and rest as she could. Normally, rest would be getting twelve hours of sleep after staying up until 3 a.m. due to a coffee binge and a LOST marathon, but she'd have to adjust her schedule here. There wasn't going to be any coffee here, and there certainly wouldn't be any internet connection and Netflix streaming available.

Claire had searched the nearby shops and restaurants for people and supplies, but found nothing of too much value. The only thing that caught her eye was an old ring made from sea glass on one of the small stands. It was a nice blue color, and the stone was probably large enough to hurt someone if she punched them. She took the ring off the stand and put it on her ring finger. It was just the right size.

Heh. I bet Hansel would look pretty fucked up if I hit him with this. Then he can get on his knee and kiss it. Heh. Don Monaghan. I like it.

It was late, and Claire decided to settle in. She settled into one of the old restaurants, blocking the front door with a chair under the door handle. It wasn't much, but she was too tired to try a lot. She put her jacket back on to keep her warm as she relaxed at one of the old tables. She kept the flashlight within reach and waited. There wasn't a whole lot to do in the dark restaurant, so boredom was setting in. She sighed and closed her eyes.

I guess I could try some mental exercises. That might help me fall asleep. It's been a long time since I was settled enough to do that. Alright. Degrees of Separation. Everything I think of has to connect to something else. Let's try it. There Will Be Blood. Daniel Day Lewis. My Left Foot. Just a jump to the left. Then a step to the riiiiiiiiiight. Tim Curry. Indian Curry. Should have tried curry at least once before ending up here. We ate Mexican food too often. Tacos. Nachos. Taco Bell. Naomi Bell. She's dead. Fuck. So many people are dead. Shit. Fuck.

Claire's mind continued to run around in hazy tangents. Before she knew it, she had fallen asleep, resting her head on the old table. If she could get eight hours of sleep, she'd be really happy. Twelve hours would be amazing. Not getting woken up by some crazy asshole would be the best thing that could happen.

"FUCK!"

Claire shouted as she picked her head off the table. The crackle of the announcements were still annoying as hell. At the very least, it meant that Claire was right in picking this one shitty restaurant to spend the night. No one robbed her or killed her, so she was probably the most well rested she had ever been.

She listened closely to the announcements. Four idiots tried to remove their collars and bit the dust for it. Claire shook her head. She knew it would be difficult to get these things off, and no one at their school was probably smart enough to figure a way out.

More names passed by. Summer Simms, one of the prize winners, died and took two people with her. Theo Fletcher was also dead. The Tolstoff twins were dead, and someone else died from a collar blowing. Claire closed her eyes and sighed. It wasn't like she was okay with her peers dying; she wasn't that heartless. She just had to accept that some people she didn't want to die were still alive. Sean, Kyran, Corey, Gray, and a few others were still trucking along. Of course, that prick Hansel was still alive. She couldn't win them all.

Claire got off her seat. It was a new day, and she needed a plan. She put her bag on the table and pulled out the map. She needed to figure out where to go next.

((Joey continued from: Many of Horror))

Joey continued his trek forward. He had taken the lead from Matt sometime ago and had not really looked back, with the exception of a called out piss break or two. Joey had a new found determination. He would not allow himself to be a bumbling nervous wreck. He knew that if he didn't break that mentality, he may as well just wait patiently until one of the killers found him and took him right out of this game. He still wasn't ready to play the game, but he damn sure wasn't going to be a sitting duck.

Joey ran his right hand through his tangled mop of hair. He had long since abandoned his toque, though he was starting to regret it, as his hair kept impairing his vision. He did his best to tuck the strands behind his ear, but it wouldn't last long. Joey continually had to look down at his feet to make sure he wasn't stepping in a hole, or on uneven trail. His ankle still throbbed from his fiasco escape attempt after seeing Yasmin die, and to damage it further would be just plain idiotic.

After a couple minutes, Joey heard the announcements. He made sure to mark off the areas that were now dangerzones, noting that he and Matt had just left one. After putting his map and marker back in his bag, Joey took a moment to grab the silver chain dangling off his neck. It was a gift from his mother and it made him realize he hadn't thought much of his family or friends since he'd been on the island. He figured that this whole event would do that to a person. You become so focused on surviving that you don't really have time to focus on anything else.

Joey rose to his feet as he heard Matt's footsteps behind him.

"Let's uh, let's go checkout some of these places."

He moved towards the strip of buildings as the swords clinked against one another.

Claire folded her map up and put it in her pocket. She had no specific destination in mind, but figured it would be best to stay along the coast. It was like the plan in Planet Terror, only instead of keeping her back to the ocean to deal with radioactive zombies, she'd use it to keep an eye for any of the psychos that the Aurora 2012 class had on the roster. She sighed as she pushed her glasses up on the bridge of her nose.

Then again, I guess I still don't have a real plan. Well, I guess staying alive is as good a plan as I can get at this point. It doesn't sound like anyone's really got a way for us to get out of here.

Claire grabbed her bag and slung it over her shoulder. She grabbed the flashlight and held it in her right hand. She admired the sight of the sea glass ring on her finger, the blue shard contrasting with the black flashlight. It was a nice touch, one that she found aesthetically pleasing.

Claire walked over to the door to the restaurant. The chair had held up nicely. No one had barged in during the night, and she was well rested because of it. Well, as well rested as she could get on this island. She moved the chair out of the way and reached for the doorknob.

"Easy, girl," she muttered to herself. "You've been sitting in darkness for so long you might burn your eyes out looking at the sun."

She slowly opened the door, letting a small beam of sunlight into the restaurant. She didn't really have any aversion to sunlight, despite her fondness for staying in dimly lit rooms on her computer. Claire just didn't want to make her way outside too quickly. Six days in this game meant she'd have to take a lot more precautions.

((Matthew Young continued from Many of Horror))

Matthew slid back into place once the announcements concluded, falling easily into step behind Joey but moving closer in and to his side now. He'd let him take the lead without complaint, even welcomed it while they traveled through the trees and the fields lit but not warmed by the sun's touch. It was good sometimes to follow, just as it was good sometimes to lead, and on a more practical note it let Joey set whatever pace he wanted while Matthew kept up behind him. But now, with buildings close around them, all potential shelters for the trigger-happy or the frightened, he tightened their little formation, ready to

"Careful, though," he said briefly, and perhaps, he thought, letting his eyes drift down to the swords at his sides, unnecessarily, to Joey's proposal. He didn't really need to be reminded, though on the other hand, there wasn't any guarantee of what they might find. Someone to pop out and shoot them in the face was the obvious first thought. A couple of swords weren't exactly ample protection, but of course a big, fat gun wouldn't be, either. It might even make things worse, providing a nice shiny incentive to covet. The people who thought they were invincible by ripping through their friends - names all fresh in his ears - weren't really safe at all, he mused.

And neither were they. There was a flicker in the corner of his eye, the whisper of a creak. "Hey," he said, giving Joey a soft jab with his elbow and pointing at the door swinging slowly open.

Although it was just two simple words, Matt saying "Careful, though" held much more meaning. He was telling Joey in lesser terms to watch his ass because this was an easy area to get surprised in. There could be friendly people hiding in these buildings, but there could also be the Calvert, Dodd, Rizzolo, Lombardi, and Hartmann wannabes. It was clear from the announcements that their classmates certainly had a few of them.

Joey gave a quick nod to acknowledge the warning. Before he could take another step, Joey felt a nudge to his shoulder. Matt gestured towards one of the buildings where a door was swinging ever so slowly open.

Joey instinctively dropped to one knee and gestured Matt down as well.

"Go for cover?" Joey whispered.

Claire continued to slightly push the door open. She was slim, so she didn't need to open it completely. She could thank her dad's jogging regiment and healthy dinners for not giving her a gut to suck in. She stopped opening the door for a brief moment and closed her eyes. She needed to thank him. She needed to say a lot to her family before she died. For one who could give such grandiose speeches if needed, she really needed to think of exactly what to say to clear any regrets. The odds of getting a dying speech were as slim as the crack in the door.

Claire pulled her bag close to her. It was probably going to be hard to stay slim with such a bag, but she'd have to try. She could keep the bag close to her chest and the flashlight ready. Claire kept her eyes shut tight. This simple action was getting really intense, even if she wasn't sure if she needed to feel scared.

Okay. You haven't heard anyone outside, and no one has come to the door. Just get outside and look as non-threatening as possible. When you see that you're alone, you can laugh at yourself for being a nervous wreck.

Claire began to count down. 3...2...1...go.

Claire slipped through the door, her bag brushing against the doorjamb and her back forcing the door open even further. Her eyes were still closed as she stepped out onto the boardwalk. She opened them slowly and looked out at the nearby ocean. She stared at it, not moving as she clutched her bag close to her chest. She didn't even notice that there were two people nearby. Her eyes were focused on the blue before her.

"Mm, yeah," he said absentmindedly, shooting a glance over to where Joey ducked, but he didn't try to fold himself behind any real obstacle and simply bent a bit to lower his profile.

The door swung fully open and a girl emerged, slipping swiftly out across the boardwalk. She seemed distracted, preoccupied, maybe simply a bit frightened, but there was a look about her that said she could probably take care of herself. Still, he thought, it was better to be safe than sorry.

"Hey!" he cried, standing up fully and trotting towards her, having his hand.

The girl emerged from the building and remained focused forward on the water in front of her. It took Joey a second to recognize that the girl was Claire Monaghan. He couldn't remember if he had heard her name announced at any point, which logically seemed to say that she would be safe.

Joey's over-analytical brain continued to assess the situation. He didn't want to be the first one to shout out, but at the same time he didn't want to be...

"Hey!"

The thought train was interrupted by Matt shouting to the girl and making his way towards her. Joey rose up very slowly.

What the hell is he doing? Don't just run over there!

Joey took a few strides, following in Matt's path. He stopped short of where Matt did though so that he could watch what happened next from a safe distance.

Claire's mind was still focused on the ocean. She wasn't immediately shot, so there was some relief. Still, her gaze was focused on what lay before her.

That's when a voice called out to her. She felt a sense of dread come over her.

Crap. You could have been killed right then.

She turned and noticed a guy coming right for her. She tightened her grip on the flashlight. She was so stupid to rush out like that. Even though the guy seemed friendly, she couldn't help but feel like she should have left the restaurant from the backdoor.

The girl started and turned to face him as he approached. She seemed a little frightened, a little nervous, but it was all fine. It wasn't like there ws no cause for it. Heck, tell him a week ago what he'd be doing, and it was hard not to imagine himself as a shivering, nervous wreck. But once she knew he meant no harm, and he could see that she wasn't really capable of any - it wasn't like you could shoot someone with a flashlight - they'd be able to work something out together, maybe find some respite and keep each others' spirits up while they waited for whatever fate had in store for them.

Matthew's bag thumped against his side as he ran. The ipod, he thought. It was still in there. Still functional, still full of nothing but Justin Beiber. The latter the cause of the former, as it had left him with absolutely no cause to use it. It wasn't bad to keep around, though, because it wasn't difficult to believe that it wasn't his. The only remaining explanation, of course, being that the terrorists had placed it in his bag as their humorous little parody of proper armament.

Feet thumping against the solid planks of the boardwalk, he plunged his hand abruptly into his bag to retrieve his designated weapon.

((GMing approved))

Claire felt antsy as the guy approached her. She had probably screwed up royally by dashing out of the building. Now this guy was approaching her. He was reaching into his bag and was about to pull something out. She couldn't stay here. It didn't matter now. She was outnumbered and still didn't have any useful weapons.

Fuck it. Bail. Bail now.

Claire dashed towards the approaching boy, letting her bag swing by her side. She didn't want him to get the chance to whip out whatever he was hiding. She needed to get away as soon as possible. Without thinking, she swung the flashlight up towards the boy's head.

She heard the tool collide. The flashlight was heavier than regular flashlights, so he probably would be knocked back a bit. At the very least, he'd have to deal with that first instead of his weapon.

Claire dashed past the other guy and away from the harbor. Like Orpheus, she refused to look back. She relied on her good cardio to get her as far away as possible. She couldn't have a repeat of the encounter with Hansel, so she needed to make sure they couldn't follow her.

"Dammit!" she screamed as she ran.

She couldn't act stupid anymore. Every action needed to be planned carefully.

He should have seen it coming. Done something about it. But it all seemed so inconsequential. She wasn't especially big or strong, her "weapon" hardly worth a second glance. The idea that it might cause any damage at all was given only a brief moment in his thoughts, the idea that there would be a reason to try even less. Sure she'd be scared and jumpy and whatnot, but everyone was, and that was hardly reason to try to maim or kill someone. There was weight behind every action, a consignment with every word or gesture to alter the last days of everyone involved in a way that couldn't be taken back. Naivete, perhaps, or simple misplaced trust, Matthew saw no appeal in violence or even in the contemplation of it.

And so the girl's flashlight whipped swiftly up from the corner of his vision before he could form any proper reaction or response. Pain erupted across the side of his face, sudden and heavy and deep, pain that left its impression as sound as much as feeling, threw blackness in front of his face while the normal channels were busy. He stumbled from the force of it, dizzy and dazed and, and the rotting planks at the edge of the boardwalk splintered and crumbled beneath his staggering bulk.

It wasn't much, all told. A moment that might slip out of recollection on later inspection while his brain reinstated proper perception of the world. Nothing more. But as he pitched over, there was nothing to govern his fall, nothing except the vague, flighty feeling in his stomach to warn him to pull his chin around or throw out an arm or a leg to arrest the weight of his body first.

There was a wet, meaty crack as he landed, but he never heard it.

Once again, Joey was seeing things in slow motion. Matt had run over to the girl, and before Joey could even blink, the girl cracked him in the skull. Joey watched Matt stumble a few steps, then he was gone.

"MATT!!" Joey yelled as he sprinted over to the spot where Matt fell through.

"Whoa..." Joey panted as he skidded to a halt, sensing the uneasiness of the boardwalk beneath him.

He continued to shout for Matt. Shouting in the direction of the hole. There was nothing. No response.

Joey slid himself back onto the dirt pathway next to the boardwalk and put himself a seated position. He looked around for the girl, but she was long gone.

"How the hell does this keep happening?" Joey whispered to himself. Twice he had encountered death on the island, and twice he had been too far away from the situation to do anything about it.

He felt a tinge of anger towards the unidentified girl. A part of him wanted to run after her, but what good would that do? What would he even do if he caught her at this point?

He looked at the hooked blades on the ground next to him. Would he ever have to use these?

"Damn it."

Joey rose himself up. It wasn't even noon and this day was already bullshit. The worst part was that he was angry at the girl for causing this, but at the same time, he didn't feel all that sad that Matt was dead. Joey looked around for Matt's bag, but it had taken the plunge with him. There was nothing left of this situation or area for Joey.

With a quick glance, Joey picked his next destination, hoping to the high heavens that the next situation he found himself in would go favorably for longer than 24 hours.
