((Michelle Weschler continued from That's Crate!))

Another day, another failure.

Michelle wandered out of the glass dome of the courtyard and sat in one of the huge cages, hung with smaller cages. Fireflies flitted around nearby, glowing gently. Her companions were elsewhere in the cages, probably getting ready to sleep.

The wind rustled her hair and she looked up at the moon.

It was midnight. She could tell by the placement of the moon. During the day she could be seen frequently making makeshift sundials in the sand so she always knew the time within an hour. She closed her eyes and felt the air. The wind swiftly pushed the clouds in front of the partial moon, casting a shade over the island. She'd recognized them as nimbus clouds. Back in the real world, one of her sea scout competitions was cloud identification.

"It's going to rain," she whispered to herself and the fireflies.

It was day three.

In nine hours the announcements would come back on to tell her she'd failed. Not only that, but she was a tremendous failure. She hoped that Kam and Jess and Nat and Yaz and Yukiko wouldn't be on there. Carefully she slipped her injured arm out of the sling.

Eyes closed, she clasped her hands together near her heart.

She wouldn't give up. Even if it had to be just her and her small group at the end, they would end it together. She wouldn't hurt anyone, ever.

The most difficult part was continuing to go forward. It was so demoralizing to have failures build up on top of each other. It would have been so much easier to shut herself up in a building and sleep until the end. To do nothing would be so easy and so comforting. She wished she had the luxury to do nothing.

Tears welled up in her eyes again. The uncertainty of what would happen and her constant failures were normally kept at bay by her telling herself "Just keep trying. As long as you keep trying there's hope."

And so she sat in the cage, tears rolling down her cheeks and hands clasped at her heart and pleaded with herself, hoping she had the strength of spirit to keep to the plan she'd laid out.

"Michelle?"

((Gwen O'Connor's story continues from That's Crate!))

Gwen had traveled the rest of the day thinking about herself.

To be honest she genuinely, legitimately, had no clue what she believed in right now.

Michelle was nice, and so was Virgil, though they didn't seem to get along super-well with each other. Gwen's issue wasn't that, though. Gwen also didn't doubt the plan, because at least in theory it was the most moral and defiant solution to the situation.

Gwen just doubted if it would actually work. People were already fighting to live. Would any of them, Theo, Hansel, Katarina, the others, be willing to give up their lives now? It just...it seemed so unlikely, that murderers, inherently selfish people, were willing to do something so selfless.

Gwen also thought of Maynard that night.

She'd been distracted from him for a while, but it came back to her a short time later. Maynard, the sweet and quiet boy she'd hung out with, chatted with, gone to prom with, someone who didn't deserve to be here. He was probably here, if he wasn't dead.

And Gwen wanted to see him again.

She didn't love him, not romantically, she didn't think so at least. But she cared about him, she cared about him a lot, and if she never saw him before they...died...it would be too much for her to take. But now wasn't the time, now was the time to check on Michelle, who was sobbing in the corner.

Gwen knew how she felt, but she tried to hold back the feelings from drowning her.

Gwen crawled over to Michelle, and sat down in front of the other girl.

"Michelle, are you alright? Do you need to talk?"

((Bianca Howard continued from Ain't No Reprievement Gonna Be Found Otherwise ))

Bianca spent all of the next two days walking. She’d stop to rest when she got tired and then moved on when the mood struck her. When the announcements had come over again, she took a minute to mourn all the classmates that she’d lost. For a while she decided to avoid her classmates as much as possible. Obviously many of them were playing this sick and twisted game. Since she’d had two run-ins involving guns already, she thought it best to lay low for a while.

Eventually, Bianca’s need for companionship won out and she began to look for a place with a few people around. She need to interact with people, she was tired of listening to the sound of her own thoughts. Decision made, she looked for the first building she found and entered.

It appeared was an abandoned aviary. ‘What is it with me and wildlife,’ she thought. Two parks and now a bird sanctuary. Maybe she should make a point of visiting all the wilderness areas. It’s not like they had any other purpose.

She saw Michelle and Gwen talking quietly and glanced around. There were no guys around, so Bianca decided to give the girls a try, praying for better luck.

“Hi,” she said quietly not wanting to startle them. “I don’t want to take it or anything, but do any of you have a gun? If so, I’ll just be on my way now,” Bianca said with a smile.

((Virgil Jefferson Davis, continued from That's Crate!))

So far everything had been bust.

They'd failed to find people to join them in protesting this gladiatorial battle. They'd continued searching, but it was to no avail. Virgil had been thinking back a lot to The Aeneid during the day. He'd brought it along on the trip to finish. It had been his personal project from the start of high school, reading through the entire thing in Latin by the time he graduated. He'd only had a few hundred lines left. Aeneas and Turnus were in the middle of their epic final battle. Sure, the poem spoiled its own ending, but that was sort of the point. It was a story about fate.

Fata viam invenient. Jupiter says that to Venus at the start of the poem. Aeneas leaves Troy and travel around the Mediterranean because he was fated to get to Italy. He abandons Carthage and breaks Dido's heart because it he was fated to found the Roman race. But that was only useful looking back; Virgil could call it fate because it happened that way. It had to happen that way.

But how could Virgil see his fate going forward? Aeneas had the spirit of his wife to guide him; he had the Gods intervening to help him along his path. Virgil had none of that, right?

Maybe he did. They were fated to appear on the island. He was fated to run into Michelle, and Gwen, and everyone else. Virgil just didn't know how to piece together where the story was going.

Virgil was walking back to Gwen and Michelle from his bathroom break when he saw Bianca approach. He recognized her voice, asking if they had a gun. Why was she asking that? That was not a great way to approach people.

Virgil checked his back pocket, and the clip was still there. Good. He'd been practicing reloading the gun, and he'd be able to pop it in quickly if he needed to. Hopefully he wouldn't. Bianca was probably harmless. Right?

He walked up behind Gwen and Michelle so that Bianca would see his approach. He held the gun facing down in his left hand.

"I've got one. Why do you ask?"

Too many people. This was too many people for her to feel comfortable telling someone if something was wrong. And there was of course. There was the feeling of failure weighting down on her like a lead blanket. She'd tried so hard, but what else could she do? It was most important above all that she not let the despair have her. As soon as it took hold of her, wrapped her in it's warm embrace and pulled her backwards into the darkness it would be over for her.

She looked up at the new voice and the new arrival. Michelle quickly passed her fingers under her eyes and moved her curls away from her face. It was Bianca and she'd wandered up acting pretty friendly which was good. Michelle sat up and smiled at the girl.

"We're actually trying to get rid of them. We- uh, we're trying to run out the clock. We won't kill anyone and maybe if no one dies for an entire day this game can end our way. Not their way," she said getting quieter. Michelle had just now remembered how pretty Bianca was and she blushed.

"Either way, you are welcome to stay."

She gathered up a few of her things to make it into a vague sort of pillow shape and flopped down, staring up at the aviary ceiling.

"We better get some rest. The doors to this place are pretty loud. We'll hear someone if they try to get in."

Michelle hugged herself and uneasily closed her eyes.

____________________________

Michelle was at a carnival. In front of her was a table with three cups and a ball. She bit her lip and cocked her head at the thing behind the counter. It was someone in a clown mask. He swept a hand over the cups and mixed them.

She chose a cup. No ball
She tried again. Wrong cup again.
Again? Another loss.
Again? She lost again.
One more time? Nothing.
Press your luck? Nope.

She was getting angry. “What kind of game is this?” she demanded of the clown. A voice came from behind the mask, smooth and calm.

“Time to collect.”

She couldn’t see the face, but it sounded like it was smiling.

Michelle looked at the clown wide-eyed with fear for a moment, then glared knocked all three cups over. They fell onto the floor and out of all three spilled cascades of balls.

“What’s going on?!”

It grabbed her wrist with one hand and with the other reached out and stroked her face. “Shhhhh. It’s hard playing a game you keep losing.” The unmoving mask smiled blankly at her. “I know how easy it would be to play a different game. Maybe I can help you.”

With a gasp she broke the grip and ran. The ground warped and a swing ride bent and swayed. The chains shot out and grabbed her and she screamed. The plush prizes were suddenly huge, looming. They were like people in grotesque mascot suits.

“Let me go! Get away from me!” she shouted and thrashed. All of them moved in. They touched her all at once, pushed their furry hands against her as she screamed. Her screaming turned to crying. The clown appeared in front of her. Her head hung down while she was assaulted.

“God, please stop. Oh my God, make it stop. I don’t want to feel anymore,” she begged.

Now the clown tiled her head. “Every minute, every second is pain.”

The prizes were pulling at her skin and it stretched like gum. Just as her flesh felt like it was at the breaking point she lifted her head back up.

"I miss her," she whispered as she was ripped apart.

__________________________________

Michelle woke up twitching and rolling around on the ground. That was soon drowned out by the fact that her collar was beeping. Suddenly she stood stock still. Had they done it? Was it finally finally over?

No. It was to mock them. Her limbs relaxed and she fell flat onto her back. Michelle's relaxation period was shortly lived. Her heart stopped when she heard Kam's name. It restarted when there was confirmation that was still alive and then dropped right into her stomach when it was revealed that she was a murderer. Not only a murderer, a double murderer.

"So what now?" she said looking at Virgil. "Are you going to shoot my girlfriend?" she said quietly.

Gwen was awoken by the announcements as well, after an uneasy day and an even worse night. Sleep was becoming harder and harder from the stress and fear not to mention the permeating feeling of hunger pangs. Rationing food meant not eating as much as she was used to, and Gwen was a big eater.

She wouldn't kill for a burger, but some people would, it seemed. That was distressing.

Gwen sat up, bleary and cold from the night's sleep. The ground wasn't very comforting, and she had no blankets or anything, and she wasn't dressed for the relatively cooler climate here. Not fun.

She sat, listened closely. Then he spoke.

Then she screamed, grabbing her neck and squealed louder as the beep went off and oh god she was going to die-

And then she wasn't. A lie, a fucking lie just to scare people, probably into killing more so that didn't really happen. Fuck Danya, fuck him-

Wait, but...if it'd been true, she and Michelle and Virgil would've won, because that was their whole goal, right?

Gwen was distracted from continuing her potentially revelatory train of thoughts by Michelle speaking once the announcements were over. Was Virgil going to...what? Oh. Michelle was dating Kam, and Kam had...shot two people...? That was...

Gwen didn't know what to think of that. So she sat up with a grunt, unsure of what she could say that'd make Michelle feel better.

She hope this didn't escalate.

Bianca had barely gotten a word in last night before the others had decided to call it a night. She was still uneasy around Virgil’s gun. Of course that could be because the last couple of times she’s come across a gun they’d been pointed at her or gone off. And it didn’t seem like her luck was going to be improving anytime soon.

Before falling asleep last night, she’d decided that while there was nothing really wrong with their plan, it wasn’t for her. If someone was going to attack her, she was going to defend herself. She wanted to go home, to get back to her mom.

“Why don’t we just continue with your plan to get rid of the weapons then we don’t have to worry about anyone shooting anyone, on purpose or not,” Bianca said after watching the group for a few moments. Any plan that got guns away from her, she was all for.

Fuck, Michelle was going off on him. Again. He needed to calm her down; hopefully he could talk down the situation.

"That's not what I mean, and you know it. I am sure when we find Kammy, she'll be able to explain that she was attacked or startled, or something that means she is not going around looking for people to kill."

Virgil only half-believed what he was saying. Michelle trusted Kammy, which was something, but the fact that she had killed two people was suspicious. If Kammy shot at him, he wasn't going to hesitate to shoot back.

Bianca's interjection was reasonable. Yes, wait for them to not have to worry about the psycho killers. It was abundantly clear at this point that some people; the Hansel Williamses and the Theo Fletchers, had to be removed. Virgil wouldn't remove more people than necessary, though.

"Michelle, just calm down. This gun isn't going off unless it's to save our lives."

"I am calm. I'm calm! Look how calm!" she squeaked while waving her left arm like a wet noodle.

Michelle bit her lip and slipped her right arm back into the sling. With the back of her hand she smudged any of the remaining wetness away from her eyes and cheeks. She reached up clumsily with her non-dominant but functioning arm and pinched the color back into her cheeks. With a big breath that came out slightly shakier than she would have liked, Michelle began putting the clothes she used as a pillow back into the pack she and Virgil had consolidated their things into.

"We're glad to have you," she said absently to Bianca as she folded and started putting away Virgil's things as well.

Maybe it wasn't so bad. It was very very bad, but they'd recruited another person.

"So very very very very bad," she thought, suddenly getting caught in another spiral of depression.

Michelle placed her hand over her heart as it started to ache. Finding Kam was extremely important. Not only did they have to keep her from killing anyone else, but the fact that she'd killed not one, but two people, meant that she had just highly increased her likelihood of being killed herself. What would she do if someone killed Kam? With that came the realization she was afraid of since the moment she had woken up:

She did not trust her pacifism to hold.

Michelle looked at the other members of her group after she zipped up the bag. The blood she'd forced back into her face made her look more cheerful, less dead.

"We just....need to find people that we care about. They're more likely to stay with us and help. So if anyone has someone we should be asking other people if they've seen, then yeah..."

Inside she was crushed with hopelessness, but she didn't betray it. Night time was the time to say the things to yourself that you didn't want to be true. Day time was for putting on a brave face and telling yourself to keep pushing forward.

"I'll go first. I have to find my girlfriend. You er, just heard her name. She's dark skinned, was wearing a tie-dye shirt, she's got dark hair and is adorably big boned. And wearing these" she said, holding up her hand decorated in numerous bracelets.

Gwen was glad they didn't start fighting. It was going to be hard enough to keep things together without infighting, and if they didn't they'd surely fall apart. So luckily the conflict seemed to resolve itself for now.

She'd never say it of course, but she was really worried about Virgil and Michelle. They seemed to have a lot of issues like this, and she was worried that, if worst came to worst they'd just up and leave, and then Gwen wouldn't know what to do.

So she just had to hope they could stick together. It was all they could do at this point.

Gwen stood up and nodded. "Yeah, uhm, if there was one person I'd want to meet up with, it'd be Maynard. Maynard Hurst, that is. Short, curly brown hair, really sweet, likes poetry and books. I don't remember what he was wearing, sorry."

She missed him.

((Sorry guys, work has been crazy))
Michelle’s off handed comment made Bianca smile. That was the first time somebody had said that since she’d woken up here. And while Bianca knew that she had other things on her mind, it was nice to hear. But what made her smile more than the comment was that the conversation seemed to have turned from guns and shooting people.

Bianca’s smile faltered as Michelle mentioned finding their loved ones. She wasn’t sure that she wanted to mention Jaqui. They were already on edge and Jaqui’s name had been in one of the previous announcements. Bianca had been so preoccupied before that it had barely registered, but now she realized she did want to find Jaqui. She wanted to find her and ask why exactly she’d been trying to kill anybody.

“There’s a lot of people I’d like to check in with, but right now I’m more concerned with Jaqui. I have no idea what she’s gotten herself into, but it can’t be good,” she explained.

Michelle didn't look calm. At least not at first, but she seemed to regain control of herself. She and Virgil were friends, but not particularly close, and he was concerned that her idealism was going to keep driving conflict between them. He just had to make sure she didn't jump off the deep end, that she realized that she had a good vision. That she might have to compromise to get there.

"I don't really have anyone." Virgil's closest friends were guys from the rugby team. Guys not in their class at Aurora. His friends at Aurora were always peripheral; it made hearing names like Ilya a little bit easier.

Michelle smiled a small smile that returned some true life to her face.

"Maynard," she said warmly. "I know who that is."

The next answer was not exactly as comforting. Michelle gulped and pushed some of her tangled curls behind her ear. Her smile wavered a bit. She was a killer as well and, if she remembered correctly, she was hunting people according to the announcements.

"Well....Jaq." She looked down at the ground for a moment and bit her lip. Finally she looked back up at Bianca. "If she's your friend we'll do our best to find her," she said with a serious nod.

Last was Virgil and it felt a bit odd for him not to have anyone to look out for. His statement was good in that no one he cared for might die, but it was a bit depressing that he hadn't made a friend out of the whole senior class over who knows how many years.

Michelle shuffled over to him. She looked him up and down. He saved her. He pulled her up from the edge of a breaking cliff. It had been rough going since then since they disagreed so often, but back then she trusted he would do what was right when presented with the opportunity and though she still had her reservations, he hadn't betrayed that.

"You have us."

She threw herself on him in a one-armed hug and squeezed as hard as she could. With some difficulty she righted herself again after a moment.

"We should get going. It's going to rain and we should find someplace with better shelter, warmth and people."

Gwen was lost in thought.

Good, Michelle knew Maynard. That'd make it much easier to find him if there were more eyes who recognized him. Thinking about him was painful, suddenly and sharply. Gwen was scared, scared for him and all the other people here. She knew logically almost all of them were going to die, a thought that pained her with the mental picture of every one of her classmates. It was still surreal to be in this situation, but Gwen wasn't about to deny the truth of this situation. Everyone she'd grown up with, good and bad, was screwed.

Even the worst of them didn't deserve this.

So she had to hope Michelle was right, because if death was inevitable it should be on their terms right? it sucked, but it's better to die friends instead of murderers right? It sucked, but it was the logical plan right? No other way out, might as well make it not suck and be painful and all right?

This would work.

Right?

"Alright, let's get going." Gwen smiled a tiny smile and followed Michelle out of the courtyard and away from her worries.

He had them.

As Virgil followed the others out, he let Michelle's words resonate.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

"Touch." Hands tighten around legs and fingers touch shoulders.

"Pause." The air hangs still with tension.

"Engage." The deafening thud of shoulders banging resounds across the pitch. Virgil strains, pushing, but he knows he won't be for long. Jamie's put the ball in the scrum; Larry should be sending it back to Jason soon, and then...

Fuck, ball's out. Virgil runs full speed to the right; they're playing the ball strong side. Jeremy, Mark, Zach, to Brendan. Balls on the outside, the wing's got it.

Brendan runs forward with the ball; Virgil struggles to keep pace, but, despite his athleticism, he's not faster than a wing. Brendan pulls out a bit too far ahead; Virgil and the others running support lines fall behind. The opposing 8-man wraps him up. No offload option. Brendan struggles to stay up, but he can't keep his feet up against a forward.

The opposing tackler is quick; he regains his feet suddenly. Virgil's running, he needs to get there...

Thud.

Virgil hits the guy at full force, driving him back. Larry provides support from behind; Virgil has no idea how the hooker gets to the outside in time to form the ruck, but he's glad he's got the support to protect possession.

As Jeremy starts the next play, Virgil helps Brendan up.

"Don't worry, bro. I got you."

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The guys may not have been on the island, but that didn't mean Virgil was without a purpose.

He had his ragtag group, picking up members as they moved along.

He could protect them. He would protect them.
