((Rachael Langdon continued from Exposition-->Rising Action))

Wow. This is Mirabella's house?

Rachael stood outside and gazed at the house before her. She never realized that Mirabella lived in such a nice house. She particularly liked the rose bushes out front. She always thought that houses that had rose bushes looked the most fantastic. It made her feel like she was stepping into a fairy tale.

Rachael was a bit surprised to receive an invitation to Mirabella's party. She had always gotten along with Mirabella in school and in Writing Club, but she never imagined that she would get invited to her birthday. Rachael figured Mirabella would have friends she'd think of before Rachael. Still from the elegance of the invitation, Rachael assumed Mirabella was trying to be as open as possible. It was her eighteenth birthday, the first real birthday a child had when they gained actual adult responsibilities like voting and enlisting in the military. Rachael wouldn't be eighteen until May, so she imagined it was an exciting birthday. Plus, it might be fun to go to the party.

Rachael hadn't spent that much time preparing for the party. It took one day of shopping for her to find everything she would need for the party. She found a knee length white dress with a light green leaf print at the mall along with a dark green cardigan. For Mirabella's gift, she knew that the girl was really into writing, probably as much as Rachael was, so Rachael found her a nice leather bound journal and a good pen to go with it. She hoped Mirabella would appreciate it.

Rachael felt she was adequately prepared for the party, having spent the morning getting herself dressed and ready to go. She doubted she'd stay the entire time (part of her wondered if they really had enough planned for twelve hours), but she would at least attempt to make the most of this day.

Rachael had reached the door of Mirabella's house. She held the bag containing her present in one hand as she raised her other hand to knock on the door. She stepped back a bit and waited to be let in.

Okay, let's have some fun. It's going to be a good day.

Rachael gave a small smile as Mirabella invited her in the house. She took a quick look around the room. It looked very lovely. Mirabella's family must have had some serious taste or could afford a good interior decorator. Either way, Rachael felt very welcomed.

Mirabella then pointed out the area Rachael could sit, as well as where the food was. Rachael nodded and made her way to the food, setting the present on the counter. She grabbed a cup and poured herself a cup of coffee. As she began to add some cream and sugar, she took a look at the spread. It looked like Mirabella's parents really planned a fancy party for her. It felt more like they were gathering at an event at a country club than a teenager's birthday.

Rachael took the coffee and the present and made her way to the living room. She wasn't feeling hungry yet, so she'd help herself to the food later. She sat down on one of the couches, making sure to not spill the coffee as she did.

"Thank you for the invitation," she said, placing the present on the floor. "You have a nice home."

Rachael took a quick sip of coffee. It looked like she was the first to arrive, and she wondered who else would come.

Mirabella sat on the couch next to Rachael. Almost as soon as she did, Mirabella began to ask if Rachael was feeling uncomfortable about being there. She then began to list a few things they could do, such as playing games or doing yoga. Rachael held the cup of coffee from her mouth and took a long sip.

Did I somehow give her the impression I'm uncomfortable? I thought she asked me to sit here while we wait for others to show up. Oh great, I must come off as really timid. Is it because of how I'm sitting? Is my posture putting her off?

Mirabella then asked about the present sitting on the floor. Rachael moved her cup away from her mouth.

"Oh, y-yes, that gift is for you," she explained to Mirabella. "It's your birthday, so it only seems natural to bring a gift. And don't worry, I'm perfectly fi-"

Just then, the doorbell rang. Rachael quickly turned her head towards the front door.

Perfect, someone else is here. I wonder who it is?

Rachael watched Mirabella go answer the door. She continued to sip her coffee quietly as Mirabella greeted the person at the door. Megan Emerson walked in, placing her gift on the table next to Rachael's. Megan didn't say anything to Rachael, but Rachael acknowledged her with a nod and a small grin.

Megan wasn't someone Rachael really knew in school. She knew Megan was into reading, but not much else. She wasn't someone Rachael seemed to have a whole lot in common with. Still, they had Mirabella as a tie, so that had to be good.

Rachael looked at the present Megan set on the table.

Did we both get Mirabella books of some kind? Well, as long as she didn't get her a journal, that shouldn't be an issue. Unless Mirabella is the type of person to burn through those really quickly. Or she could keep one as a diary and another as a notebook for story ideas.

Rachael took another sip of coffee. She wondered if anyone else would show up.

"You should wait," Rachael added in response to Mirabella's question about the presents. "It's a little early to start, and other people might show up."

Mirabella then asked what they should do. Rachael found that to be a bit strange. She sort of figured Mirabella would have had some events planned for her birthday. Seeing as they were asked to attend in formal wear and be there for twelve hours, she figured there would be something planned.

Well, maybe she has something in mind for when others show up.

Rachael set her cup on the table.

"It's your birthday," she said to Mirabella, "you should decide."

Rachael was somewhat surprised to hear Mirabella go into a big speech just then. It seemed like she was really concerned about this being the end of childhood. Rachael could understand why she'd say that, but it seemed really passionate and sad for what should be a happy party.

Mirabella then suggested they play Mouse Trap.

"Um, sure," Rachael said. "I don't think I've actually played that before. Could you explain the rules?"

Rachael nodded as Mirabella explained the game. It sounded like it had been a while since she played it though. Still, Rachael showed a willingness to play the game. She was sure it would make sense once she started playing it.

"Right here's fine," she said when asked where to play.

She then moved from the couch to the carpet, sitting in a rock pose she learned from yoga. She made sure her dress didn't ride up when she sat down, but she was now ready to play whenever the others were set to go.

"Well, not all day. I would have to get up eventually," Rachael said in response to Megan's comment about her sitting position.

Mirabella soon returned with the board game. She asked who should go first. Megan thought Mirabella should have, seeing as it was her birthday and she probably knew how to play the game better than everyone else.

"I agree," Rachael said.

She adjusted her position on the floor slightly. She hoped the game would be easy to play.

Rachael bit her lip as Mirabella examined the contents of the board game. It looked like she didn't expect the game to be in such shambles, and her speech got a little flustered and embarrassed. She also quickly got up to get some water, something that made Rachael feel worried.

Mirabella then asked if they wanted to watch a movie. Megan seemed up for it.

"Yeah, a movie would be nice," Rachael said.

Just then, the doorbell rang.

Oh good, something to hopefully change the mood.

Venice Pennington-Johannes walked into the home. Rachael didn't really know her that well, other than knowing that the girl was a bit competitive and very open to being friends with everyone. Still, they had Mirabella as a common acquaintance, so that had to mean something.

The girls began discussing what movie to watch. Both Megan and Venice were discussing Jaws. Rachael wasn't so sure about that film. She'd read some pretty disturbing things before, but something about shark attacks rubbed her the wrong way.

"Um, does Mira own Jaws?" Rachael asked. "Perhaps she should show us her collection first."

Rachael took a sip of coffee. She had no idea what kind of films Mirabella would have. She just hoped there was something they could all agree upon.

Mirabella had asked Rachael for her taste in films. Rachael set her coffee down and tilted her head back. It was something that she hadn't really considered before. What was her taste in films like?

Huh. What are some of the films you've really liked in the past? Well, you've liked most Pixar films. Pan's Labyrinth was great, if a bit frightening. Maybe Mirabella can give some suggestions.

"Well, do you have any ideas?" she asked Mirabella. "It's your birthday, do you have some favorites?"

Mirabella also asked about opening a present early.

"If you want," Rachael said.

Mirabella suggested they watch Snow White and the Seven Dwarves first. Part of Rachael felt a sense of gloom take over her.

Oh wow. Snow White. Interesting choice.

Snow White and the Seven Dwarves was a film that would always stick with Rachael, no matter how old she got and how her tastes changed. When she was five, Bridget showed her Snow White while their parents were out on a date. After the first ten minutes or so, Rachael was inconsolable. She didn't know about the scene of Snow White running through the forest, seeing trees with terrifying faces and logs turning into crocodiles. Something about seeing a young girl who represented innocence screaming and running for her life before eventually collapsing in despair made Rachael stay away from the film for a few years. She did watch the film again when she was eleven, but she still remembered how that one sequence made her never want to watch the film again.

She then noticed that Mirabella had opened Venice's gift. She saw that Venice gave her cash, something that made Mirabella sound somewhat upset.

I thought cash was something you usually gave for weddings. Well, it looks like she got a lot, so that has to be nice.

Rachael's attention turned back to the movie.

"So, I guess we should start watching?"

Rachael adjusted her position slightly. They were going to watch Snow White, and she was sure she would enjoy it. The overture was pretty nice, something Rachael had forgotten about the film having not watched it in years.

There was suddenly a knock on the door. It looked like more people would be showing up after all.

Rachael took a piece of popcorn and ate it. She wondered who it could be.

Rachael enjoyed the movie. She did have trouble with the forest scene, remembering how terrified it left her when she was a little girl, but she managed to get through it without letting anyone else see how frightened she was. After that, she could just enjoy watching animals do chores and Snow White singing songs about cleaning and her one true love. It was nice.

Once the movie ended, talk of cake began. Rachael perked up at the notion. Cake was her favorite thing about parties. Sure, there were games, presents, and socializing, but cake was always the best. She didn't eat cake a lot, so it was always a treat to have at parties.

Rachael stood up as Mirabella went to get the cake. She hoped that it would be a really good cake.

Rachael waited patiently as the cake and toast were prepared. She never really did a formal toast before. Sure, there would be toasts for things like Bridget getting into law school, but never anything with something somewhat close to alcohol. She took her seat as Mirabella got the cake ready.

Drinking to friendship. That sounded pretty nice. The girls at this party were all nice, and Rachael could consider them friends. Yeah, that sounded like the right thing to toast to.

Oh, and the cake. It was gorgeous. She would definitely toast to the cake.
