(This is still open until post order cycles back. I will post again once everybody from the planning thread has checked in. When stating where your characters are sitting, feel free to GM and say they are near mine, I will be posting with my characters last, and will just go with it.)

The scene was so ominous, it wasn't even funny. The ground was foggy from the recent rain, and the humidity left the air and ground feeling like the back of a sticker. The last remnants of the sunset had just ducked below the horizon, and now the moon began to ascend. It rose up behind the professor, beginning its arc that would eventually peak directly over the group. The only hint of its presence was the faint glow that illuminated the path.

Last week they’d gone into New York City. So many television shows and movies had been set there that it seemed mandatory to visit. Though much of the class had already been, it was just a nice thing to do.

This trip was much more exciting. The legend of this trip was something the students had gotten a quick summary of during their college tours. Now they would get the full story as told by their own teacher, who had grown up locally. The recent showing of the film “Urban Legends” had gotten everybody psyched up for this trip.

The class was Cinema, and the chapter was Fear.

Professor Crovo set some more sticks on the fire before clearing his throat. He looked around at his students, who sat on stumps arranged around the fire.

“The horror industry is infamous for its clichés and its predictability. Between jumps, scares, suspense, and brief romance, many people dismiss horror movies as cheap thrills.
The most infamous subcategory of this genre is the slasher. With movies such as Black Christmas, House of Wax, Texas Chainsaw Massacre, Stay Alive, Cheerleader Camp, One Missed Call, Nightmare on Elmstreet… he trailed off realizing the lengthy list was probably boring them.

As the movies’ popularity increased, the guidelines and parameters of horror movies were solidified. Character types formed, certain Tolkien scenes or lines such as “let’s split up” became more common. As people began to realize these tropes, the subgenre lost popularity among most viewers.
In 1996, Scream directly pointed out the “rules” to surviving a slasher movie. Don’t do drugs, don’t break the law don’t have sex…” He shifted uncomfortably bringing up the sensitive topic in front of students, “and don’t leave the group.

Several remakes have come out in recent years, including Nightmare on Elmstreet, and Texas Chainsaw Massacre. Evil Dead was remade into a satirical musical, and then spoofed again in “The Cabin in The Woods.”

In addition to referencing nearly every horror movie made, Cabin also identified more common themes in slashers. The Character roles (The Whore, The Athlete, The Scholar, The Fool and the Virgin being the main ones) were specifically named. The idea of the victims being “punished” for their lives of sin rather than being innocent is brought up. And the idea that the kids bring the horror on themselves both through their curiosity, and through their past actions.
The purpose of tonight’s trip is to set the scene like we are in a slasher film. You are a group of college students, and we are camping in the woods. Now, before we start the campfire story, any questions?”

Alec didn't want to be here. This was just so stupid. He sat the furthest away from Professor Crovo and was seriously hoping that this trip would just go by as fast as possible. Cinema was one of the classes that he really didn't care about. It was just a subject to him. He was good at it, yet he wasn't that invested in it. He certainly didn't want to go on this trip, however, his parents made him go. They wanted him to be the "overachiever" and be good at everything and hence he sent him on this field trip. Which sucked. Hard.

Slouching in his seat, Alec lazily listened to what his teacher had to say, not really paying attention. He knew this stuff already. It was basic knowledge and only an idiot would get themselves killed. It wasn't like he was an idiot. Then again, he wasn't sure about half of the people he was with on this field trip. They were not the people he hung out with. In fact, they were the type who liked to torment him. This was another reason why he didn't go on the trip. He was going to be stuck with these people and that was the last thing he wanted.

Unfortunately, life sucked, especially for him. Goodness just didn't seem to get to him. Of course it didn't. He was stuck with them, whether he liked it or not. He groaned at the long talk about horror movies. Horror wasn't his favorite genre. He watched it from time to time, but was never really invested in it. He much preferred fantasy and anime and video games. Not horror. However, it was a part of his course and since it was a part of his course, he might as well do well just to please his parents more than anything else.

That didn't mean he had to like it though.

"Yeah I have a question. Do we have to listen to this story? Cause I'm more than happy to just skip this and go to bed." Alec asked the teacher cynically, more than happy to let his feelings been known. He didn't care about the trip. All he cared about was the grade.

Holly crossed her legs and rested her chin in her hands. Being an Art History major, she signed up for a class on film history in hopes of taking a class where she could watch movies and learn about the art form. She didn't expect that the trip would take them into the dark woods. Part of her wished they could have just stayed in New York City and gone to places like Tiffany's in Breakfast at Tiffany's.

Professor Crovo was discussing the horror movie genre. Holly absolutely hated horror movies. Something about the amount of blood in them made it impossible for her to watch. If she was watching something like The Haunting or Rosemary's Baby, she could handle it due to the lack of blood and the emphasis on psychological horror. There was no way she could discuss Nightmare on Elm Street or any of those other films without thinking about how much blood there was. It made her feel sick just thinking about it.

Holly took her glasses off and rubbed them against her sleeve before putting them back on. The Professor had a story to tell, trying to tie the tropes of horror films to the group of students sitting around the campfire. He asked if they had any questions, and Holly shook her head. Alec, meanwhile, didn't seem to be that happy about the story.

I'm not happy about hearing the story either, but I don't think you need to respond like that.

Holly sighed. She hoped the story wouldn't have too much blood.

Diz was to put it bluntly, bored out of her mind. She'd forgotten the reason she'd picked the Cinema class but she was sure it was because she needed to take another one and the idea of a class where all they did was watch movies sounded good since she wanted to avoid actual work at all costs. So far that had been working out great. They'd had a trip to New York City and now they were in the middle of some woods camping.

Professor Crovo was going on and on about horror movie. As if they were amazingly complex, Diz rolled her eyes. She'd seen them all and enjoyed them. Hell of the whole course the subject they were currently on was probably going to be her favourite on but the way Crovo was talking about them was sucking all the enjoyment out of it. He'd managed to miss out Halloween and Friday the 13th as well, even Diz knew about them.

Diz ran a hand over her head. She'd shaved her hair off a week before the trip to New York and would run her hand over it to feel the stubble that had grown since then. If Diz was honest she didn't really know why she had shaved her hair off, she'd just felt like doing it one day and had found that she liked her head shaved. She wasn't sure what she was going to do when it started to grow back properly, maybe she'd keep one half of her hair shaved and let the other half grow out. That'd be interesting.

The professor than said that it was time for the campfire story he;d been talking about before they'd gone on the trip. If he put the flashlight under his face Diz was leaving. She decided to make herself comfy in the meantime and stretched her legs out. Her boots looked grubby but they always looked grubby so there was nothing new there.

Alec then spoke up and asked if they had to listen to the story since he wanted to go to sleep

"What's the matter Alec? You scared of a story?" Diz said with a laugh. She didn't know if he was trying to act tough or just didn't care...but either way it was annoying and he needed to be brought down.

Logan barely heard a word Professor Corvo or the other students said. It was partly because he'd barely slept in the last few days, and partly because he was high as a kite.

Yeah, mainly because he was high. If he'd been in a more coherent state of mind, Logan would have wondered how the professor never noticed that he was high.

If you'd asked Logan why he was taking a Cinema class, he probably would have answered something vague about movies being cool and artsy girls being hot. All he really managed to accomplish during class was to sit and look vacantly ahead; it was a miracle he got through New York in one piece.

Logan tuned back into the conversation just in time to hear one of the girls - what was her name, Desiree or something - ask if someone was scared of a campfire story. Campfire story? All right, he could dig that.

Wait, what was this section of the class about, again?

Rory wasn't the cinema type, but he didn't think about that before taking this class. Despite knowing little to nothing on the subject, Rory was determined to keep his record clean and ace this class. He'd studied like crazy for the past few weeks, and sucked up to the teacher for good measure. Hard work pays off, and he managed to get through New York City and keep a good grade in this class.

The Irish boy sat close to the Professor, practically next to him, in order to take in every word he said. Committing it all to memory, he smiled and leaned back (or whatever you do on a tree stump) to show he was relaxed. Might as well show these chumps that they don't stand a chance to Rory McTaggart!

Diz was taunting Alec about being scared of the story, and Rory couldn't help but roll his eyes. It was stupid enough for her to shave her head, but tease a kid in front of a teacher? She might as well say "Fuck it, punish me now." and get it over with. He glared at the both of them, telling them "Diz, don't be a stupid bitch for once and leave Alec alone. Alec, stop being a pussy and bear with it."

He didn't say it out loud, of course. Rory wasn't going to make the same mistake Diz was.

Frankly the fire was not up to much, she still felt a cold chill. She had only taken the damn course because it was easy, after all what could be easier than sitting on her ass watching films? But now she was regretting the whole plan. To sum up her current problems: it was cold and she was bored.

Re-enact a horror movie? This peaked her interest though she suspected it sounded better then it would be. She listened to the exposition on horror movies, she hated the way he had sterilised the genre boringly placing it into boxes. A major part of the genre was completely lost by such study, though she was aware it was a bit late for this thought process after taking the class about studying it. In fact the main point she was learning seemed to be that she should not have taken the damn class.

It was at this point that Alec decided to chime up. His point was fairly predictable, though she privately agreed with his sentiment. She really could not be arsed to get involved with the 'oh so hilarious bad boy banter'. She was unsurprised when 'Diz' felt the need to cut the guy down to size, in fact she probably could have safely bet on the fact.

Her thoughts returned to the subject of horror, it was after all why she was freezing her ass off. She disagreed with the professor but wanted to fully formulate her opinion before she spoke. For her, horror was about an acceptance of another greater power, it was an attempt to understand and rationalise everything that humanity did not understand. It was through exploring the dark corners of the human psyche so that you could better understand the darker part of you. That was what horror explored. It was a thrill ride living on the edge, humans from a young stage in their evolution were thrill seekers after all and this was a chance to embrace this. Terrify yourself despite your own safety. The role of horror movies was far darker and less sterile then the professor was allowing for. She accepted that it was a vehicle to explore themes and what he said was true, it just didn't catch the essence of the genre.

Niki shivered and huddled up closer to Curt as a gust of wind came blowing behind her, making the roaring fire that was built in front of her to flicker wildly. She couldn’t stand being out in the forest, spending the night out in the cold with bugs continuously biting her skin was not Niki’s idea of fun. She had only gone on the school trip because her friends were going and she didn’t want to be left alone back at home without them. She just hoped the trip would be over and done with quickly so she could go home.

She began playing with a strand of her hair as Professor Crovo started to drone on about horror movies. Horror wasn’t her favourite genre of film and in fact film wasn’t even one of her favourite past times. The only reason Niki decided to take cinema class was because a few of her friends took the subject and she wanted to take a subject in which she didn’t have to do anything and as it turned out, she was wrong. When she thought of cinema class she thought of rows of seats placed in a classroom in front of a large television showing the latest films, not sitting in the middle of the wilderness around a campfire listening to ghost stories.

After Professor Crovo asked if the class had any questions, Alec decided to chip in. Niki grunted in agreement to Alec’s statement, she was cold and tired and the last thing Niki wanted to do was listen to some crappy ghost story.

It was then that Diz responded to Alec. Niki rolled her eyes, she couldn’t stand Diz, if Niki was to have something close to an enemy it would be Diz. If Niki was to be honest, she would have probably of said the same thing that Diz said to Alec and in fact she did find it quite funny. However, Diz was the one who said it and because of this, this immediately took the humour away from it.

“Urgh, shut up.” Niki murmured so quietly that only those closest to her would have been able to hear her. When Rory joined in, Niki couldn’t help but chuckle as he insulted Alec and Diz.

Erica loved the outdoors and had been excited about this trip all week. She had never been camping before and this was the first time that she would have actually spent the night in the woods. She threw her head back and took in a deep breath of air, the smell of pine and smoke filled her lungs. She let out a great sigh as a smile crept across her face. Erica’s head resumed to its usual straight forward position and she stretched her arms out in front of her as Professor Crovo began to talk about horror movies.

Although horror wasn’t her favourite genre Erica still enjoyed it nonetheless and was interested in what Professor Crovo had to say. This was why Erica enjoyed cinema class so much; she found everything about it so interesting, it was just an added bonus that her and her classmates were able to go on these trips.

Erica’s enjoyment grew as several members of the group began having an argument. In order not to seem rude, Erica covered her mouth with her hand that she was leaning on to try and hide the smile that was spread across her face. She saw Niki’s mouth move but was too far away to hear what she was saying. Rory then joined in the argument and so that the argument wouldn’t escalate, Erica attempted to change the subject.

“So Professor, what’s this ghost story going to be about?”

Damon scratched his head as he listened to the professor’s lecture on what a horror movie was. This was the part of the course Damon had been looking forward to the most of all, and it had been...alright so far. The woods added a nice atmosphere at least. You could never get the same feeling in a classroom. That said the lecture itself was leaving a lot to be desired. It was amazingly focused on solely the Slasher genre, which was only a small part of the main horror genre itself. There was torture horror, body horror, psychological horror, splatter horror films, gothic horror, zombie movies etc. and then the found footage movies that had all become popular again but at that point he was just being pedantic.

Anyway the whole point they had taken a field trip out in to the woods was so that they could recreate a typical scene you'd find in a slasher film. That was a good idea actually because looking around Damon could see at least one of every archetype that the professor had mentioned, they even had some extra ones. Damon wasn't sure if he was the only one who had noticed that little fact but he was fairly sure Logan wouldn't notice anytime soon. The guy looked so baked Damon wondered how he was even sitting up straight. Sure Damon wanted to smoke a joint but he hadn't been stupid enough to do it before they all sat down at the campfire. That was just asking for trouble, as things were though Logan had managed to get away with it. It made Damon wonder why he'd even bothered to stay sober for as long as he had.

Man he really wanted to get high.

Damon was broken out of his thoughts when the others started arguing. He noticed movement from Erica, who was sitting next to him as she put her hand over her mouth, probably trying to hide a smile if Damon knew her. She then spoke up and asked Professor Crovo about the ghost story. Damon knew there had been a reason they were sitting around a campfire.

"It would've been funnier to let them fight." He whispered to Erica. "Don't tell me the image of Diz vs Alec isn't kinda funny."

Luke looked on at his classmates around the campfire, wondering for the tenth time that night why he signed up for Cinema. He'd thought it'd be an easy A. He had thought all you needed to do was watch movie then think up some random symbollic shit and poof: done. That unfortunately hadn't been the case. Like all of his other grades he was now at a B, probably would've been lower if he had decided to ditch the trip. He still didn't understand why Crovo wanted to try out this "interactive" shit with them.

Running his hand through his hair he looked over at Alec and Diz's possible bitch fight with irritation. It's spats like that that just made the assignment drag on, and on, and on... dammit he didn't want to be in the forest freezing his butt off. Even if Lukeagreed with Alec on heading to bed voicing his opinion wouldn't change anything.

"Yeah, what Erica said." Luke spoke up. Hopefully sounding interested would get him in both the Professor's and the girl's good books. "Unless you're trying to add suspense I suppose."

Curt's arm was wrapped around Niki's side, and his hand slid up and down from her ribs to her waist. Partially to keep her warm, partly to cop a feel, and mostly to keep her happy. Bitch Niki wasnt somebody he wanted to see in poor weather conditions. She was already annoyed just to be outside, and now the bantering classmates were getting her angry. Nothing enough to set her off, but enough to have her on the brink of bitchiness.

Crovo's lecture was just a lecture. The class was easy, somebody on the football team had recommended it to him. Of course, once he joined Holden and Niki joined. And once Niki joined Missy joined. Curt didn't mind their company, but he saw enough of all of them outside of class. Curt blinked a few times realizing Crovo was talking again. It was a good thing Curt was good at bullshitting, he had no idea what was going on.

"On with the story! Unless anybody's chicken..."

---------------------------------------------------------------

Missy adjusted her posture. She was right next to Niki, as always. Of course, Niki was snuggling, but Missy didn't mind. She scoped the circle for a cute boy she might flirt with later. Alec was out. Luke would be her safety if she couldn't do better. He could be a jerk sometimes, but he'd been to her yet. Damon, we'll see. A step over Luke, at least. Diz... wait. Diz was a girl. Holden was out of it. Niki once mentioned he tried to mimic Curt, and that was lame. Logan was alright, and stoned people were always fun as long as they didn't get ranty.

She sat quietly, planning out her approach. Her eyes moved to look at every person in the circle except Crovo himself. He was just the teacher of a joke class. His opinion of her didn't matter. She continued looking from student to student, hoping to catch a boy looking at her, and then to smile back.

For just another moment she looked back to Diz. Definitely a biological woman, but easily in the top three of "most macho" in the group. She looked away and felt the smooth top of her hair she'd straightened that morning.

---------------------------------------------------------------

Holden was uncomfortable. He was between Alec and Logan. Alec was gay, and Logan was super high. Holden was unfamiliar with both concepts, and felt like a normal person in weirdtown. There hadn't been a fourth seat where Curt, Niki, and Missy were sitting. Curt and Niki obviously were going to take two of them, but then Missy took the last one without even discussing it.

Then again, discussing it would have been weird. But maybe she could have sat with him somewhere else. They were more friends by association than actual friends, but still, they could have gotten to know each other. She was pretty, and a lot like Niki. It was a shame he didn't feel comfortable enough to talk to her.

Having nobody to talk to, he'd settled for listening to Crovo. He wasn't much of a movie guy, but this stuff made sense. He sat up and paid attention, not knowing what else to do. It was a class trip, might as well listen to the teacher.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

"By all means, if you are easily spooked, feel free to return to your tents or go for a walk. The rest of us here will enjoy a good scare without you. But this story is true, and we are camping just outside where it happened..."

The students who wished to leave left, and he began.

"Three hundred years ago, a babe named Deborah Spellman was born. Her father was an ex-convict, and was never able to find work dependably. Deborah's mother began to whore herself to support the family.

When Deborah was seven, she told her father her mother would not be returning from work that night. When this proved true, Deborah's father relentlessly interrogated and beat her to find out what else her mother had told her, or where she had gone. After enough abuse, Deborah confessed she'd seen it in a dream.

Making the best if his situation, Deborah's father began to sell his daughters predictions, all the while her powers grew stronger and stronger. She now supported the two of them, in the absence of her mother's income.

As Deborah aged, she became more and more angry with the world. Her predictions caused her great pain, and the strenuous work caused her to age more quickly. By the time she was an adult, she'd been exhausted. At the age of thirty, she appeared fifty. She finally snapped while entertaining a group of young adults at a wedding party. Some of them were in school to pursue their dreams. Some of them were wealthy heirs. And all of them were friends. She envied their happiness, their health, and their freedom. The Groom's body was found in a gazebo along with the priests, and the bride was found stripped down and drowned in the lake.

It is still unknown how she did it, but all of those poor kids ended up brutally killed that night. More scary than that, but each death appeared to be a suicide. The youths had drowned, hanged, and even stabbed themselves to death.

Now it was common knowledge Deborah had been at the party that night, and it had been shocking that she was alive, well, and seemingly indifferent to the news. But there was no evidence or motive. Unable to prosecute her, the police were at a stalemate. Knowing what had to be done, the townspeople took it upon themselves to dispose of the witch.

When she refused to answer the door to the angry townsfolk, they broke it down and stormed her home. She was able to curse the entire town just before she was slaughtered, her remains burned, and her ashes sunk to the bottom of the lake.

But they say her mind and spirit live on, and she still seeks revenge on the town and suffering on the fortunate."

Crovo sat up to show his story was over. He wished he'd had a T.A. to jump out of a bush and scare the students, but unfortunately all he had was the story. He tried to look proud and satisfied with it even though he knew the kids weren't interested.

(First death will follow in my next post.)

At Diz's comment, Alec just rolled his eyes and glared at her, obviously unamused by her comment. He had no opinion on her. She was loud and annoying and in his opinion, a bit of a show-off. For one thing, she had way too many tattoos for her to be called anything near charming. Also, she shaved her head for some god-forsaken reason that he never really understood.

"Oh I'm not scared of the story. In fact, I'm more scared by all your stupid tats and your shaved head. You trying to be a guy? Cause let me tell you that if you are, even I wouldn't have any interest in you." Alec replied scathingly, not holding anything back and giving Diz a satisfied smirk as Rory, one of the smarter kids in school, told him to stop being a pussy.

"Yea Rory? Screw you. I really don't need any of this. If you'd excuse me, I'm going for a walk." Alec declared somewhat smugly to the rest of the camp as he got up and walked straight into the forest. While it may not have been smart of him to travel alone, it was so much better than staying with them and listening to some stupid, half-baked "scary" story. He had better things to do than that.

Walking into the forest for some time, Alec noticed something on the ground. Running over to it, he squatted so that he could get a better appreciation for it. What it looked like to him was a knocker of a door. Except, it was strange. It was shaped in the image of what seemed to be a glaring goat and for some god-forsaken reason, it had a third eye right between its two eyes. To say it was disconcerting was an understatement. What was a piece of a door doing here? Especially considering that they were in the middle of some forest? Were there any houses nearby that he didn't know of?

Shrugging, Alec decided to pick up the piece of wood and knocker, not really sure what else to do with it. He probably should bring this back to Professor Corvo. Maybe he would have an idea what it was. Holding it in his hands, Alec started to walk back to the camp, confused with the events that just happened. He couldn't help but wonder why it was there. The design was strange as well so Alec did his best not to look at it.

Once he reached the camp, it seemed as if the story was nearing its conclusion. Smirking, he decided to hide in the bushes and wait until it was over. It was certainly more fun for him to scare the ever-loving shit out of all his classmates who tormented him. While it was only fleeting, the prospect for revenge still made him feel good. After all, who wouldn't want it?

As soon as he was finished, he jumped out of the bushes and let out a loud scream, intending to scare all of the campers. After he had jumped out, Alec began to laugh, smiling in glee as he looked at all his classmates.

"Sorry, couldn't help it." Alec apologized weakly to his classmates before turning to face professor Corvo.

"Hey, Professor, do you know what this is?" Alec asked, tossing the knocker in front of him and taking up his old position.

Holly sat and waited for the Professor to tell the story. Her classmates seemed really excited by the idea of a scary story, or very annoyed by it. Holly watched as one boy and girl made a few cracks to each other about the tale. Everyone at the camp was drawn into their little spat. Holly simply stayed quiet and leaned back in her seat. If this was how everyone was going to act, she was kind of glad none of them had noticed her.

Professor Crovo then began his story. Holly listened closely as he told the tale of Deborah Spellman. Holly thought the name was a bit of a stretch, but decided not to say anything to the Professor about it. She had to accept that suspension of disbelief was something she'd have to apply to her film class, so might as well use it here.

When he finished, Holly breathed a sigh of relief. The Professor was vague on some detail, so it didn't sound like there was a lot of blood. The fire imagery was creepy though. To be burned alive, screaming in agony the whole time. It freaked her out.

Just then, there was a loud scream. The noise was a bit sudden, so Holly let out a loud scream as well. She jumped out of her seat and stood up, her eyes darting around the campsite.

Oh, it was just Alec. Great.

Holly sat back down and rubbed her glasses with her sleeve. She could hear Alec mentioning something about finding something in the woods. Holly didn't pay a whole lot of attention. She couldn't believe she screamed like that, so she buried her face in her hands.

I just want to go to sleep.

As Luke expected the story was just as cliched as other slasher stories. Crovo didn't even go into real detail about the staged suicides. Throughout the experience he tried to keep himself from snickering. Even if Crovo was trying to make a point the Professor could've been a bit more imaginative, maybe added a twist ending or something.

He wasn't as calm though Alec had the bright idea to jump out of some bushes near the story's punchline, jumping outof his seat with his hands balling up into fists. He sat back down as quickly as he could before someone would think he'd been scared. He hadn't been, just startled is all. He didn't react as much as Erica had at least; that scream was probably the loudest he'd ever heard something come out of that girl's mouth.

"What the hell, dude?!" Luke glared at Alec, who had appeared to on his short walk have found a weird, dorknob... thing. Non-descriptive words aside the thing was weird; he'd never heard of anyone using a goat has a vanity knocker, and definitely not one with three eyes.

Guess Professor Crovo had gotten more into the story then I thought. Alec suspected the man had left that on the trail for someone to find: that's why he was so chill about letting people go off on their own.

Logan only half-listened to Professor Corvo's story, more interested in his classmates' bickering and the beetle slowly scuttling around his shoe. The world was an interesting place when you were high.

He stayed focused until Alex jumped out of the bushes, catching Logan by surprise and causing him to topple out of his seat. For just a moment, Logan's heart skipped a beat, before he realized who it was.

"Asshole!" Falling on the damp ground and nearly having a heart attack was enough to start bringing him down from his dreamy high. He was too angry and still high enough that he didn't notice the strange object in Alec's hands.
