Name: Frieda Nora Kline
Gender: Female
Age: 17
Grade: 12th Grade
School: Aurora High School
Hobbies and Interests: French, Tennis, Journalism Layout Design, Copy Editing, Swing Dancing

Appearance: Frieda is a lithe and elegant young woman who moves with grace and stands at a respectable 5'8''. She weighs 125 lbs. She has deep dark brown skin and naturally curly hair that she meticulously straightens each morning. Given society's tendency to value lighter-skinned women black women, Frieda generally takes quite a bit of effort to fit in with standards of conventional attractiveness, not the least of which is hair texture and hairstyle. Because of her daily make-up routine, Frieda's skin sans foundation is somewhat dry with some clogged pores and patches of acne.

Frieda's movements and walking style are extraordinarily fluid. Most likely due to her swing dancing background, her motions always seem intentional and graceful but not superfluous. She also tends to use her entire body to react to events, leaning forward and raising her shoulders when interested or playing with her hair and crossing her ankles when bored. She is very expressive, but does not appear exaggerated or obnoxious. As such, she is known to wear her emotions on her sleeve.

Frieda has pointed eyebrows with a nose that is a little wider than she would have liked. She was lush lips that tend to look pursed even when she is not annoyed. Her eyes are hazel and almond shaped and her chin is pointed. Both of her ears are pierced and she tends to wear ornate hanging earrings that are simple in color but eye-catching in style. She also likes to collect simple but aesthetically pleasing rings, ranging from small silver bands to spinner rings, which she often flicks mindlessly when stressed or bored.

As for clothing, she is extremely fond of muted colors. Her closet is filled with grays, whites, and blacks with only a few sprinkles of pastel skirts or tank tops for running or playing tennis. She rarely wears anything resembling heels, although she owns a pair, and still has trouble walking in them. She is, however, a fan of attractive boots. While Frieda does not wear very many dresses, she is not opposed to them and likes to think she looks quite good in them. Because she is quite proud of the muscles on her arms, she enjoys her tank tops and likes the few dresses she buys to be show off her arms as well.

On the day of the abduction, Frieda was wearing a simple white tank top, a nice black wool peacoat, and a pair of well-fit jeans. Her hair was straightened and parted asymmetrically to the right side. On her right wrist was two hair ties. She had make-up on, a pair of dangling silver earrings with a small blue gem, and two rings on her finger. The first was a simple silver ring given to her by her mother while the second was a gold spinner ring that she often played with. Finally, she wore her black tennis shoes.

Biography: Frieda Nora Kline was born the only child of housewife Marisol and radiation oncologist Peter Kline in a relatively affluent suburb of Kansas City, Missouri. Peter and Marisol had been trying for several months to no avail, so the arrival of Frieda was both a joy and a miracle to their eyes. Since her birth, she was used to the unconditional love and support from both of her parents, but her experiences outside of her nuclear family were not always as conducive to a well-adjusted childhood.

Frieda fell prey to the cultural preference of lighter skin over darker skin amongst the African-American community. Her father was quite dark while her mother was relatively light in comparison. Because she was not as familiar with her father's family as her mother's, she was in much greater contact with her mother's side, including aunts, uncles, and especially cousins. As a young child, she was frequently faced with snide remarks or barely hidden quips about how dark she was compared to her cousins, and this would plague her for years to come.

To compound the problem, Frieda attended school in an area that was predominantly white and often felt that she could not spend too much time with other African-American students for fear of her skin being made fun of. As such, she actively tried to make friends with students of other races. She also began to ask her mother to help her straighten her hair in lieu of braiding it.

By the time she entered middle school, her mother had to give her a talk about loving herself for who she was and ignoring the comments from others. Although she didn't want anything to start because of her, her mother confronted her cousin's parents about the issue. This, combined with some prior minor issues surrounding money, caused Frieda's parents to separate themselves a bit from the extended family temporarily.

Also during her middle school years began her love for tennis. Her parents had always wanted their only child to have what they called the trifecta of skills: academic intelligence, social proclivity, and athletic talent. Seeing that their daughter had already been doing well in school and they were not aware of the full extent of Frieda's problems with her skin color in relation to her peers, they began to focus in on the athletic side.

Each weekend, her parents would take her to a park and try a new sport or game together. They started with Frisbee, then football, then soccer, but none of them seemed to interest Frieda as much as they had hoped. Finally, they tried to teach her how to hit a tennis ball against a wall. For Frieda, it was the perfect mixture of fluid and graceful movement with aggression and passion. Her parents proceeded to play tennis with her about once a week, hoping that she would take the sport up in high school.

As she grew older, Frieda became more and more attached to her father. Her father, a well-traveled and worldly man, greatly affected her life and interests. Having spent quite some time in France on business for several years, he became quite enamored with the culture and language of France. As such, Frieda began taking an interest in learning French and requested to take classes.

She saw her father as the epitome of class and wanted to emulate him and his achievements. Her parents, thrilled that she was motivated to take charge of her education, signed her up with a French tutor late in her middle school career.

Prior to beginning high school, however, Frieda and her family moved to Seattle on account of his work. This was a bittersweet time for her because she had grown quite used to the people and the places she had grown up with. Uncertain of how she would fit into a high school dynamic of students that had already known each other for years, she worried that she would not be well-liked or popular. She calmed herself, however, by telling herself that it was a fresh start.

The factor that stayed as a constant between Kansas City and Seattle was tennis. Frieda's love and passion for tennis grew as she entered high school, finding it a great release when she was stressed and an excellent way to lose herself in something outside of the daily grind of school.

Around this time, she also began to take dance lessons under the encouragement of her mother. Seeing the fluidity of her movements in tennis and her love for physical activities where she could lose herself in the moment without necessarily needing to think about a dozen teammates, her mother suggested she learn how to dance for fun. Frieda did indeed enjoy dancing, specifically swing dancing, and though she was never interested enough to participate in competitions, it became an enjoyable diversion for her.

In high school, she excelled in academics. She was particularly interested in social sciences and made an effort to take as many honors courses as she could. As would be expected, she also opted to take some French courses as well, with the hopes that eventually she could study abroad in France during college and gain some immersion experience.

As an elective, she also joined the journalism staff and became very interested in layout design and copy editing. Though she wasn't necessarily the strongest writer, she enjoyed learning the semantics and grammar of language, as consistent with her love of learning French, and enjoyed editing other articles more than writing her own. As for layout design, the neatness and orderliness of modular design and good photo and text composition suited her preference for fluidity and aesthetics.

In regards to her problems with her skin color, Frieda found that teenagers tended to be more tactful and less open about her skin color than younger children. Despite that, she still felt pressure to straighten her hair and try to fit into what she believed was what was socially preferred.

As she grew older, she only grew closer to her parents. Aside from normal teenage conflicts, she really admired what she saw as a remarkable passion and talent from both of her parents. She desperately wanted to have the sort of relationship that her parents did and idolized the academic and workplace successes of her father. In an effort to gain what she wanted in life, she pushed herself to place school first and focus on what would give her the life of her dreams. Though at times she found it difficult, Frieda had managed to live up to her parents high expectations.

Advantages: Frieda is extremely lithe and agile, giving her the ability to move and dodge things quite well. She is a relatively decent runner but more importantly, she is quite strong due to her athletic background. She generally is quite good at being independent and thinking for herself as well.
Disadvantages: Socially, Frieda is not particularly well-known or popular, so she does not have the instant allies that many of her classmates may. She also is not the best at communicating with others due to her preference to working alone. Going along with that, she has trouble trusting others with responsibility because she worries that they will not be competent or get the job done. Unfortunately, this means that when she needs help, she is unwilling to delegate tasks to others. Finally, despite her general athletic abilities, she has not learned how to swim and thus would have an issue with any sort of water-based problems.

Hiya, LoneArcher!

Before we give Frieda a full critique, could you please make sure her name is in normal (first middle last) format? Staff inverts names for the header only in final profiles, and having stuff out of order actually makes that more difficult. Post when you've got that done, and we'll give Frieda a full critique. Thanks!

Hiya, LoneArcher!

Frieda's profile is a good start, but she is DENIED pending some editing.

This sentence: "Given society's tendency to value lighter-skinned women black women," is very messy and also a universal statement that really isn't necessarily true. I'd rather see this bit dropped.

"Frieda has pointed eyebrows with a nose that is a little wider than she would have liked. She was lush lips that tend to look pursed even when she is not annoyed." is awkwardly phrased right now, and would work better as "Frieda has pointed eyebrows and a nose that is a little wider than she would have liked. She has lush lips that tend to look pursed even when she is not annoyed."

How long is Frieda's hair?

I'm a bit confused by Frieda's birth being viewed as so miraculous; it's not uncommon at all for couples to take quite some time to get pregnant, and a few months isn't long at all in the grand scheme of things.

I am, again, worried by the reference to a culture-wide skin color prejudice. While it may exist in many areas to greater or lesser degrees, I'm not comfortable with how it's presented here as nigh-universal, especially in such an overt way, which my reading on the subject suggests to me is rather rare.

What about Frieda's father's work necessitated a move to Seattle? How did this affect the family as a whole? Does Frieda still keep in touch with her old friends? What about her extended family? How did she find the culture of Seattle compared to her hometown, since it's such a different climate (both physically and metaphorically).

Which classes did Frieda do best in? Was school easy for her, or did she have to work hard to maintain her high grades?

What's Frieda's current social situation? Who are her friends?

A lack of major connections without any real enemies is more neutral than a disadvantage. it also doesn't make too much sense, since Frieda's been in Seattle for four years (and quite a number of other students transferred at a similar time, so there'd be plenty of folks to make friends with). Her communication issues and preference for solo work should come up in her bio, as should her trust issues. I'd like to know how all these things affect her life, because they come out of nowhere and don't really mesh that well with the rest of what we know of Frieda. Also, while these things may give her troubles with schoolwork, why would she stay so rigid with her life on the line? Finally, a lack of swimming skills is probably largely irrelevant, at least enough not to be a big disadvantage; the only time swimming comes up in most games is when people die trying to swim away from the island.

Frieda's profile could also use an overall proofreading for flow and sentence structure.

Post when you've got Frieda edited, and we'll give her another look. Thanks!

After going through training for my job and seeing what the rest of my semester looks like, I don't think I'll have the time to adequately devote to more than one character. In light of that, I'd like to retire this application.

Sorry and thank you so much for the time you put into reading applications.

No problem! And, for the record, I far prefer you making sure you can bring your all for the kids you've got approved than taking on too much. You can resubmit Frieda for a later version or Mini if you want. :)

This character has been abandoned by its handler. It is eligible for resubmission at any time.
