Name: Alice Gilman Gender: Female Age: 17 Grade: 12th School: Aurora High School Hobbies and Interests: Science, drawing, roleplaying games (video game and tabletop), steampunk, volunteer club. Appearance: Alice has somewhat messy, neck-length, bright red hair. Her eyes are dark blue. She is somewhat short and of average weight, being 5'4'' and about 120 pounds. She has an oval shaped face, typically free of makeup,(she finds it more of a pain to apply than it's worth) a small nose and downward curved eyebrows. She's quite skinny, not really having any muscle to speak of. She looks somewhat androgynous, and is thus occasionally mistaken for a boy. Alice doesn't really pay attention to what she wears, though on the rare occasion that she does she tends to prefer blue clothing, it being her favorite color. Otherwise, she just throws on anything that fits and is comfortable. In general, however, her wardrobe consists of clothing that is non-revealing and heavy. Her eyesight is rather poor, and so she wears large, round glasses. She often wears clockwork watches, more out loving clockpunk and such than utility. Biography: Alice's had a lifelong obsession with how the world works, starting with performing "experiments" as a toddler. She's always loved dismantling things to examine their inner workings and figure out what makes them work, though she had occasional difficulties in putting them back together. These traits, once Alice was old enough to go to school, led to a heavy interest in science class, where she excelled. Alice is an extremely curious individual, often seeming to be interested in everything. She's a huge fan of shows such as How it's Made and can spend hours on Wikipedia, just looking up random pieces of information. While she has a definite focus on scientific subjects, Alice still holds an interest in other subjects, especially history. She doesn't especially care for math, but views it as a necessary evil. She often holds improper "experiments", though as they are typically spur-of-the-moment she rarely follows the scientific method, mostly only serving to sate her curiosity. She just as often performs actual experiments, however, and though they may not especially new or original, she loves the very act of observing and recording data itself. Along with her scientific pursuits, Alice also enjoys drawing, though she doesn't really think of herself as an artist. She is quite good at drawing sketches of real things, especially when she can see them in person, but has difficulty with drawing anything especially fantastic or abstract. It isn't that she lacks imagination, exactly, but she just has difficulty transferring the images from her mind to the paper. While not much of a gamer, Alice loves RPGs, both of the video game and tabletop variety. The main appeal of RPGs, to her, is taking an elaborate system, figuring out its inner workings, and then breaking it beyond recognition, while still staying within the rules. This often leads to difficulty with other players, who often get fed up with her "Munchkining". Steampunk style things are another love of Alice's. She often listens to bands such as Abney Park, along with devouring any steampunk-themed media. She especially enjoys the themes of discovery and progress, along with the general aesthetic. Alice's family life is pretty normal. Her father is an office worker, her mother works at a daycare, and she has three siblings: Sam and Harry, twins who are four years her elder, and Mary, her younger sister, currently in sixth grade. Alice currently gets along well with her family, though when they were younger the twins took a liking to messing with her experiments, which started a bitter rivalry that lasted through most of their childhood. Mary looks up to and often emulates Alice, who in turn dotes on her, often recruiting her as an assistant. Alice, when not pursuing her interests, tends to be rather detached from the world in general, ignoring such trivial things such as fashion and social drama. Her speech is terse, often lacking pronouns. This is due to her disinterest in most everyday things, making her waste as few words as possible on what she believes to be inconsequential things. She is much more verbose when discussing her various interests. At school, Alice's grades are quite good, usually all A's. She doesn't really interact with the majority of her fellow students, only speaking (briefly) when spoken to. Alice does have a couple of close friends who she more open with, and she tends to hang out with them often. Recently, Alice was recruited to the volunteer club, joining mostly out of curiosity. While she is interested in the club's activities, she has not really had much of a chance to actually participate. She has a tendency to speak before thinking, often inadvertently insulting others. This leads to most avoiding her, thinking of her as rude and unfriendly. Those who get to know her well, however, find a rather kind girl underneath the detachment, albeit one who often mentally seems to be in an entirely different location than the rest of humanity. Advantages: Knows a lot of somewhat random but useful knowledge, such as how to apply first-aid. While she never fired an actual gun, she does know how they work, having studied the inner mechanisms of firearms during one of her curiosity-inspired learning rampages. Disadvantages: Alice has extremely poor eyesight. If she loses her glasses, she can see a few feet in front of her, at best. She's a bit out of shape, due to exercising rarely, and, due to being short with weak muscles, lacks strength as well. She isn't on friendly terms with the majority of the student population, and while there aren't really any people who full-on hate her, she is disliked by enough people to have trouble forming alliances. |

Alice Gilman is temporarily DENIED pending some adjustment. Let's cover the technical issue first. There shouldn't be parenthetical references in the profile. For example: Hobbies and Interests: Science, drawing, roleplaying games (video game and tabletop), steampunk, volunteer club. She has an oval shaped face, typically free of makeup,(she finds it more of a pain to apply than it's worth) a small nose and downward curved eyebrows. There are other parenthesis in the profile. Please remove them. The use of the word "experiments" shouldn't be in quotation marks since it implies that what Alice is doing obviously isn't experiments. Alice is off to a good start, but there are some questions that I would like to have answered before I can approve her. Taking it from the top: In the Appearance section, Alice is missing a few things that would help round out her look. I need some information about her skin color/tone and mouth, please. I also need some more details about typical clothing for Alice. Currently, you've told me it's blue and not revealing. That doesn't give readers a lot to work with. Is she a girl who typically wears jeans, slacks, short, skirts, or capris? Are her shirts button down blouses, polo shirts, or t-shirts? What kind of shoes does she wear? Are her shoes sensible and tend to be flats, sporty like tennis shoes, or does she wear heels or boots? You're also missing her day of the abduction outfit, which is a requirement. In addition, I'd like a little bit of detail about her glasses. What color are the frames? And speaking of accessories, I love the part about her clockpunk watches. However, the explanation about why she likes them should go in the biography, not in the appearance. The biography has quite a few questions I'd like answered, if you please, starting with where Alice is from. Is she a Seattle native or did she move to the city at some point in her life? What are her parents names and what is her relationship with them like? How did her parents and siblings react to her habit of dismantling their possessions, especially since she can’t really put them back together? Is this an on-going habit of hers? Besides dismantling items, what other experiments does Alice carry out? About Alice's hobbies... they're all lacking an age at which she started them/became interested in them. Please add an age at which she took up each hobby so that it becomes easier to track Alice's personal history. Alice's art hobby: Of course, at what age did she begin this hobby? What are her favorite subjects? Does she share her art with anyone? Has she ever taken any classes or is she completely self-taught? The steampunk hobby: How did Alice get introduced to steampunk? Who are some of her favorite steampunk authors/books/movies? How long has she been a steampunk aficionado? The gaming hobby: Again, when did she begin this hobby and how did she get involved with it? Who does she play tabletops with if she has difficulties with other players? Has she worked her way through many different gaming groups? Does she play with local groups or does she play over some kind of electronic medium like AIM or Skype? What are her favorite RP video games and favorite tabletop games? Why are these her favorites? The Volunteer Club: How recently did Alice join? Please elaborate on what you mean by she was curious about it. What keeps her coming back? Why hasn’t she had a chance to participate? What are Alice's post-graduation plans for herself? Is she attending college, traveling, or going straight to work? If she is attending college, which college doe she hope to attend? What does she plan on studying? The Advantages and Disadvantages section: Knows a lot of somewhat random but useful knowledge, such as how to apply first-aid. - Knowing first aid isn't random. Also, since it is never discussed anywhere in the biography, this isn't a valid advantage. While she never fired an actual gun, she does know how they work, having studied the inner mechanisms of firearms during one of her curiosity-inspired learning rampages. - Again, I'm unsure how this is an advantage. Even if she understands how a gun works, that doesn't give her any skill with a gun or give her defense from a gun. Disadvantages: Alice has extremely poor eyesight. If she loses her glasses, she can see a few feet in front of her, at best. She's a bit out of shape, due to exercising rarely, and, due to being short with weak muscles, lacks strength as well. - A couple of issues here. First of all, 5'4" tall is the average height for women in the US. It is by no means short. Secondly, unless Alice is supremely out of shape, this is not a disadvantage. Third, this bit about being out of shape isn't discussed anywhere in the biography. She isn't on friendly terms with the majority of the student population, and while there aren't really any people who full-on hate her, she is disliked by enough people to have trouble forming alliances. - Okay, if people don't hate her, then why would she have trouble forming alliances? Wouldn't the more plausible situation here be that her blunt nature and disregard for social niceties drive away potential allies? I think that should do it for now. Drop a reply once you've made the changes and I'll give Alice another going-over. |
