[[Celeste Beaumont continued from Living In The Aftermath]]

Fuck...fuck...fuck... Celeste leaned against the wall of the tunnel, mentally swearing in time to her tired pants. She'd been running since the Sawmill, not very fast, and she had to stop and rest so many damned times...What I get for skipping Gym, looks like. Karma finally catching up with me for that. You anger the Gym Gods and they pull this bullshit on you, she thought, laughing dryly to herself. Put ya on some bullshit island in the middle of fucking nowhere, send your own classmates to kill you...

Kill.

Celeste looked down at her hands, as if she'd just now realized that her sledgehammer was gone. Well, fuck. How was she to defend herself now? She'd be fine as long as she was with a friend, she had reasoned--well, not even a friend exactly, just someone who wasn't insane or a jerkass in general. They would have a weapon, they would protect her. They had to, right? Celeste was just a small, thin little girl, and...well, people protected girls like that, didn't they?

John woulda protected me, she thought to herself, curling her fingers towards her palms, nails digging into the skin til they made tiny crescents in her skin. She hadn't heard his name in the announcements yet...so he must still be okay. Hell, he was a big guy, he could protect her and Kayla--Celeste didn't wanna leave Kayla by herself, Kayla didn't seem too confident herself.

Wait...Kayla.

Celeste looked over her shoulder into the darkness, struggling to see someone's--anyone's form. Kayla was missing...Where did she...?

It started to come back to her. Celeste's hands had gotten sweaty in her running, in her panic. She had to let go of Kayla's hand a few times, wipe her own hand...at some point or another, Celeste supposed she'd had to let go for longer than three seconds, just kept running in blind panic...

Which meant she'd lost Kayla.

Oh....shit. "Kayla?! You follow me in here?!" she shouted, straightening up, shouting down one random direction.

She didn't hear a response--didn't see anyone either. Damn it! she thought, curling her hands into fists again. She'd gone and lost her only companion in this game, the only person who could watch her back--the only person who had a weapon at the moment, considering...

It's a lose-lose scenario, looks like, Celeste couldn't help but think to herself as she leaned forward, hands against the cool wall of the tunnel, fingers digging into it. Breathing heavily in anger, trying to calm down some, she rested her forehead against the wall now. I left the hammer, guess that's okay, cuz it woulda slowed me down and I'd end up with a cap in my skull...On the other hand, now i can't defend myself. Yeah, the thing was heavy, but Celeste could have lifted it. She thought.

Yeah, she could have, if she had enough adrenaline.

"Fuck my life," she grumbled, beating her head against the wall, trying to calm the pounding in her head as her heart beat faster. No use getting too angry...she'd turn around, go back for Kayla, regroup...they'd be safe. All she had to do was turn around and go back the way she came.

A task that was easier said than done, she realized as she lifted her head away, eyes adjusted enough to see that she was well and truly lost. The tunnels formed a maze of sorts, it was easy to get lost if you had no map, didn't make a trail. And Celeste, frightened as she'd been, hadn't thought of either. She'd just ran for it, taking each turn as it came to her.

"...fuck."

Nothing to do now but...at least try. Celeste shoved herself away from the wall, walking in the other direction, grumbling angrily. It was okay, though...she was safe in the tunnels. No one would stupid enough to come in there.

Right?

Someone was coming. Celeste straightened up further, looking like there was a yardstick down her shirt and she was nailed to it, the way she stood. Allowing a tense, though somewhat-friendly smile to appear on her lips, she jogged forward. "Ah, thank God... Was afraid I lost ya for--wait." She stopped at the same time the other person did, and though it was dark, Celeste could still see that this was not Kayla.

"Damn..." she grumbled. Well, it wasn't so bad. This chick was still a person, a potential bodyguard of sorts--

"Welcome. I am Pandora Black. I've been trying to keep the records of the beast's game. Would you, perhaps, like to write a letter home?"

"Wait...what?" Celeste asked incredulously, squinting at the girl and tilting her head. What...who? She didn't remember a Pandora Black in any of her classes--a name like that, that sounded like either a video-game slut or a porn star, of course she would have remembered her. And...oh God, she sounded like a video-game character, too. "What do you want me to write with?" Celeste couldn't help snapping, though she tried to keep her irritation in check. "I got no pencils, pens, no pin to prick a finger with--a letter home would have to be mailed out, how the hell do you expect to do that?!" She leaned forward, squinting at the paper for more writing...damn tunnels made it hard to see if there was any, though.

"Top of everything else, I can't see... How can I see what I'm doing, huh?" she added, in a slightly softer, though still frustrated, voice.

There was one thing though...Celeste managed another little smile at this thought--calling this situation "The Beast's Game" was kinda cool. Props to Pandora for that.

Bread and water...like a fairytale witch, Celeste couldn't help think, wondering why she was thinking of fairytales of all things right now. She'd never liked those--Mom had read them to her and her sister at night, when they were little. Celeste had hated them, found them boring for some reason--that was the exact opposite reaction of what they were supposed to get, weren't they?--but for some reason, the witch/fairy/what-the-hell-ever who did a good deed in return for a small kindness stuck with her. She didn't know why, after all, where would she really run into someone like that?

Yet here they both were.

Why not? she thought to herself, grinning even wider--an ironic grin now, not holding much good humor. "Yeah, sure...water and bread in return for leading Red Riding Sweater out of the dark and dank tunnels, eh? Can I call you 'fairy helper?'" she asked, holding her hand out for a pencil.

Oh, but wait--Celeste pulled her hand back again, slightly. This Pandora chick might not stay with her after leading her from the tunnels--in fact, Celeste wouldn't out it past her to be staying in there, hoping to ride out, or rather hide out, the entire game. Least 'til the tunnels become a danger-zone, she thought to herself. But if Pandora really was staying in here...

"Wait. I got a friend I lost here--can't remember when exactly," she half-lied, "but she's probably stuck here too. She's got a weapon, I don't. I need to be with her if we're gonna live through this--gotta go back for my hammer of course," she shrugged. "But yeah, she's stuck here too. You wanna lead us Both out, Fairy Pandora?" Remembering what Pandora had offered, Celeste quickly followed with "I'll give you double the bread and water you requested."

"Thanks," Celeste grinned, mostly in relief, as she reached out, squeezing Pandora's hand tightly in hers. Giving it one good, hard shake, she nodded her head in thanks. "'preciate it. Dunno if you wanna leave the tunnels yourself--I mean, hey, if you're good at hiding in them and you've memorized the layout, why spoil a good thing, eh?" Well, until it was announced as a danger-zone. "Wait, no...when you hear it in the announcements, the tunnel fairy's gotta leave, 'kay? Hide in the trees maybe." Celeste shrugged a bit. Would Pandora hide in trees?

Maybe she was so attached to a particular spot that she'd stay in the tunnels after after they were announced as "blow your head up" areas, she'd stay in there. Celeste couldn't say she'd be sad, but she still didn't like the thought. "Don't want your head mangled..." she muttered.

"Soooo....'Hades.' The notebook. All that shit...coping mechanism, right?" Celeste asked, tilting her head a bit. "Treat it like a game or something, things are better? Or a fairytale?" Wasn't a bad method, she thought...She wanted to keep Pandora talking--hearing someone speak in the dark made her feel a bit safer, and Kayla might hear their voices and find them again all the faster. "Where'd you come up with that stuff?"

Celeste just stared at the back of Pandora's head, an eyebrow raised. Wow. Even if it was a coping mechanism, it was a creepy one. All the talk of the Beast was making Celeste a bit nervous, and the fact she spoke so casually about a burned body...touched it...Celeste suppressed a shudder. She couldn't imagine touching a dead classmate. Much less facing one. Christ.

"Hm...can't really remember," Celeste shrugged, hands on her hips. She tried to appear and sound as casual as possible, tried not to let Pandora's...semi-crazy-talk get to her. "I held her hand for a while...then I remember letting go, but that was way at the start. And I can't remember where exactly we did separate, all's I know is I just realized she was gone. ...oops?" She grinned in part amusement, part shame, ducking her head a bit. Saying it out loud, she felt pretty embarrassed. Losing her partner/bodyguard like that...

A faint voice was heard down the tunnel, and Celeste straightened up. "Speak of the devil...THAT YOU?" she shouted suddenly. She grinned wider, teeth showing, as she turned to face Pandora again. "Hey, might not need your services much longer after all."

[[ooc: That's alright...finals season, after all.]]

"Wait, what?" Celeste drew back, eyebrows going up as she stared at Pandora in surprise. Sheesh...she knew something was off about the chick, but she hadn't expected that. "You'd...dude, after made a deal, you'd...I don't know about this." Celeste took a few steps back a bit, frowning and putting her hands on her non-existent hips. "Look, Pandora...I know you said you'd take me and my friend out of here..but why are you asking for payment now?"

It sounded to her like Pandora was going to go back on their deal. Like she was going to take the bread and water--hell, she might take all of it--and make a run for it. Leaving Celeste stuck in the dark tunnels, wandering around the entire game until her head blew right off her damned shoulders.

Hell no. Celeste was smarter than that. She turned her body a bit, so the duffel bag she carried was a little further away from Pandora, and shook her head, still glaring up at her. "You get your payment when you get my friend and get us within view of the exit. I'm not a fucking idiot--til then, you get nothing outta me, got that?"

[[OOC: Argh, short post, sorry!]]

Celeste looked past Pandora, eyes falling upon Kayla. A quick flash of relief appeared on her face, followed by a grin. "There you are, Kayla! Been looking for you!" It was the truth, wasn't it? She began to move around Pandora, a hand resting on her duffel bag. "Pandora here's promised to show us the way outta here...too dark and confusing in here, don't'cha think?"

With that, she turned back around, staring expectantly at Pandora.

"Yeah, 'course," Celeste responded with a nod, and a slight frown. It would be kind of stupid--no, insanely stupid, to just lose her guide after finding her traveling companion...and promising to pay. Besides which, Pandora just said she wouldn't look for them...they'd be royally and completely fucked.

And not a good way, either.

"You don't mind if you hang onto ya, do you?" Celeste asked suddenly, one hand going to her hip as she eyed Pandora. "Be easier to stay together, and you won't have to look for our sorry asses later." And they wouldn't be wasting valuable flashlight-batteries... "Like Kayla grabs your shirt and I grab Kayla's--we make a human chain to the exit."

"H-Hey!" Celeste shouted, taking a few running steps forward, as if to follow Kayla. She stopped, however, for two reasons. One of which being Kayla had already vanished, and the other being that if she ran off without paying Pandora, she'd never get out of the tunnels. "Shit," she swore, hands balling into fists as she slowly turned back around, walking back to Pandora. "...So I'm right in assuming that the 'I won't look for you if you run' rule applies to Kayla too?" she asked, one corner of her mouth twitching upward, her tone sounding as if she was trying to joke but not quite making it.

Damn it, Kayla! Is this revenge for me leaving you the last time? Because you really coulda chosen a better time!

Celeste let out a noise like a growl, bowing her head and tugging at her hair. "Well, fuck!" she snarled before looking back up at Pandora. "Now what? If you won't go find her, can you at least let me outta here? ...You still get payment." After a moment of thought, she sighed and added, "Even the amount I promised before she ran."

Celeste followed Pandora quietly, a bitter frown on her face. All that trouble...all this trouble, wandering through dark tunnels, striking a deal with Pandora and then upping the price, only for Kayla to turn tail and run away. And Celeste didn't know where she'd gone, if she'd gotten out or was still wandering in there...But damn it, Celeste wanted to get the hell out of this place, out of the dark and in proper daylight, and not have to wander around like a lab-rat in a cardboard maze. Besides, what would have happened if the tunnels were announced as a Danger Zone? Celeste would run around like a chicken with its head cut off. And then some time later, she really would be missing her head.

Well, fine! Kayla wanted to be a fucking idiot and run from the only person willing to help them out of the maze? Fine. Her head could fucking blow off for all Celeste cared!

"The exit is just ahead. See the light ahead?" Pandora said, snapping Celeste out of her sulking. She looked up, looking around. ...No, she didn't see any light. It looked the same as it did a few minutes ago. But hey, maybe Pandora was a tunnel-creature-woman or something. Maybe she saw light where Celeste didn't.

"Yeah, sure...I guess," she grumbled.

"Once we're past this area, we will be outside amongst the other monsters... Far away from this Hades. Before we plunge ourselves into that decaying madness, might I ask for my payment now? It may be the only chance I have to sit and rest..."

Ohhhh, Celeste got it now. Pandora wasn't going to show her to the actual exit til she got her payment. "Yeah...fine," Celeste answered, slipping her duffel off her shoulder and kneeling beside it. She didn't want to pay Pandora just yet--what if Pandora ran off with it or something? But on the other hand, it was too risky to piss someone off in this game. And Pandora could easily hurt her--Celeste being weaponless and all--or leave her where she was if she refused. As close to the exit as they probably were, Celeste couldn't risk going there on her own. Knowing her awful luck, she might turn around and end up further than she started.

"Here," she said, finding a slightly-squished loaf of bread in her bag, and some water. She held out both to Pandora, her heart sinking a little as she saw what was left of the food in her duffel. Damn, that's...that's gonna hurt later. But if I don't pay... "One loaf of bread, half the water in here," she clarified, giving the water a little shake, letting it slosh around. She'd be watching to make sure Pandora didn't take much more than promised.

Celeste had never been happier to see sunlight. She let out a loud cry of jubilation, arching her back a bit and stretching her arms over her head with a laugh. "Ohhh, thank God. Thanks a ton, Pandora, seriously." She lowered her arms, glad to be out of the tunnel, the dark and dampness and the not knowing where the hell she was going or coming from.

She looked at the book in Pandora's hands, smile slowly slipping off her face. Yeah, she'd left the tunnels, but she was still on this damned island, still missing her partner and her man, fighting for her life, and....weaponless. Well, fuck. Maybe no one saw it yet, she thought to herself. Turning her attention back to Pandora, she paused...and nodded. "Yeah...sure, why the hell not? It's light out, so I can actually see now..." Unable to find a pen, Celeste crouched down, smearing her fingertips with a bit of the dirt and mud on the ground before crudely scribbling her name in the notebook. "Not much ink to say much else, sorry," she muttered, scrawling a heart after her name. That would have to do.

"An' don't worry, I don't need you to escort me around the island or anything like that," she smirked right back at the paler girl. "Got someone else for that...boyfriend. Gonna find him later and we'll partner up. Thanks for getting me outta here at least," she added, giving her bag another hitch and starting on her way.

A few steps later though, she paused. After a moment's thought, she dropped the bag and opened it, pulling out the waterbottle again and tossing it at Pandora. What the hell, she had more, right? ...right? If not, her partner would share, surely... "More water for you...And hey, when the Tunnels are called as a Danger Zone, get out, okay? ....You're kinda awesome," Celeste mumbled the last bit, zipping her bag back up and leaving.

Finally, she could get on with things.

(Celeste Beaumont continued elsewhere)
