[Joss "Jojo" Joiner continued from One of Three]

The night slipped into the beginning of a new day as Jojo lied in one of the beds of the bunkhouse as he continued to recover from seeing Maria's corpse two days ago. John and Sunil helped get him away from the grisly remains as he became comatose. The rest of their journey to the sawmill sped past him aside from a few things. The first announcement snapped him out of his funk slightly when he learned the name of Maria's killer, Jackie Broughten. Another thing he kept noticing was the absence of Jay and his humor. Jojo's guilt grew heavier on him as he realized the second person he promised to protect was now missing and he had no way to find him.

Great, Maria's...gone and we haven't seen Jay since finding her. I'm so useless, if he comes up dead on today's announcement then I'll have nothing left to live for...

...Except revenge, then you would just need to kill those who killed the ones dear to you.

He could see it now, that Jackie bitch dying as she writhed in pain from her eyes being gouged out by two carpenter pencils. A second, unknown assailant brought down by his hands as he snatched their life as they did to Jay who layed near them...

Jojo shook his head to erase the vile thoughts and images in his head. He had to stop thinking like that, Jay might still be alive he thought. With that small glimmer of hope, Jojo drifted to sleep.

((John Smith continued from One of Three))

John glanced out of the window again, the second time in less than a minute. Every rustle by an animal or the wind - he could never tell which - and he was on the look-out.

He resumed his former position against the wall and closed his eyes, squeezing them tightly for a few seconds. The image of Maria's body was still there... Whether that was a good or a bad thing, he was unsure. Would it stop him from killing an innocent? Or anyone, for that matter? Would he kill to protect the two who he shared this hiding place with?

They had been hidden here for a long time, taking shifts to watch for Players - sharing his shotgun. John wanted to go out looking for Celeste, but what would he do when he found her? She was probably dead like Maria. He'd never get to hold her or kiss her... Sure, he could do other thin-

"Eww..." he grimaced before biting his lip to silence himself. He was thinking about necrophilia? Seriously? So what if it was the only way to have sex on this island? It was fucking sick! He'd just have to die without having it again. Like everyone else who had been killed or died in some stupid way. How many had died from fiddling with their collars? Like the terrorists with the resources to take them out of the country were really bluffing about the dynamite in their less-than-fashionable neckwear.

At least his mind had shifted from sex. Jojo and Sunil weren't really his type, and they were probably straight, but he had considered trying something with them more than once... It wasn't like there were a lot of entertainment options on the island...

((Sunil Savarkar continued from One of Three))

Sunil hadn't exactly had the best time the last day or so. He was in need of a good meal, a good shower and a good sleep. He did have some basic rations in his bag, but as much as he would like to say he wasn't spoilt, his rich background had raised his standards pretty high, so the overly moist bread and warm water he had been supplied were pretty close to inedible for him.

On the subject of food, Sunil had deduced that the cans he had found and ignored in his bag were almost definitely his weapon roll, seeing as John or Jojo didn't have them. Frustratingly, neither he nor his companions had a good tool for opening the cans, so they'd sat ignored until recently. In the morning, Sunil would probably head into the sawmill proper, see if there was a broken circular saw or something he could try and use. It'd be really sloppy and quite dangerous, and would probably end in Sunil losing a few fingers, but he had no other ideas on how to get the cans open, and the thought of having even a bit more culinary variety in his final days on Earth was an appealing one.

On the bright side, the beds of the bunkhouse, while old, worn and slightly damp, and possessing a small hint of a smell of old sweat, blood and something else Sunil didn't want to think about, were a damn sight more comfortable than most of the other potential resting places Sunil had seen on the island. And so, upon the discovery of the bunkhouse and the group's unanimous decision to rest there for the night, Sunil had just thrown himself on the bed, shut his mind down and drifted off to a peaceful slumber, quite a while before John and Jojo had done the same.

He would be lying if he said his thoughts and his dreams weren't haunted by the grisly sight of Maria's corpse that was still fresh in his mind, or that he wasn't scared shitless about the very high possibility that something similar would happen to him. He was nostalgic about all the aspects of his ordinary life, a life that he would almost certainly never return to except in his dreams. And even though he still hadn't completely forgiven Jay, Sunil had to admit; he was pretty worried for the guy. He was an impulsive, useless moron, but that didn't mean he deserved this. None of them did, not even that Jackie bitch and all the other killers.

Or maybe they did?

Maybe they were already on the verge of ruthless, cold-blooded murder; the island had just pushed them over the edge.

Or maybe they were just as scared and panicky as he was, and that it was just circumstance that led them to murder.

Sunil's sleeping face frowned slightly as he pondered these thoughts, and then pushed them out of his mind with another dream about being safely in the park he lived near, drawing a beautiful nature scene. He wouldn't remember what it was when he would eventually wake up, but he would remember it was beautiful, and he'd drawn a masterful sketch representing it.

After a few more minutes, Sunil groaned and crawled out of bed, mind taking some mind to remember his situation and where he was. John and Jojo hadn't murdered him in his sleep. That was a start. Good progress. Hopefully in a few days he'd have gotten rid of the last few remnants of the paranoia this sort of situation naturally produced, and could finally trust his companions like brothers, best friends or something like that. Or he'd be dead. Which was quite a depressing thought, so Sunil moved on from it immediately.

Sunil glanced at the window, where John was on watch. His companions had made the watch arrangements just as Sunil was beginning to dose off, and he had given them a half-assed affirmative reply when they asked him if the plans were alright. He could probably say he wasn't paying attention at the time and didn't really agree with the plans, but then they'd probably try and ask him for a good plan of his own, which he couldn't give. So, he'd end up doing the watch sooner or later, and he knew full well he had no right to complain. He'd have to do his bit if this group wanted to survive for any noticeable amount of time, so being uncharacteristically lazy and attempting to back out of it or procrastinating to postpone his time on watch duty would just be wrong.

Nodding at John, Sunil walked over to him, stretching his gangly limbs as he did so. "Hey John?" He yawned loudly. He'd probably need another few hours of sleep in a bit. "You alright, watch going good?" Sunil knew his turn on the watch was probably next, and John would almost definitely bring it up in conversation.

Grabbing his bag and dumping it on his bed, Sunil unzipped it and began scrambling through the contents, until he found the two things he was looking for. His tin of art pencils (quite expensive, and pretty high quality as a result) and his sketchpad. "I'm just gonna draw you, I'm bored right now. Just ignore me." Art had always been a good way for Sunil to escape the situation, focus his mind on something else and keep his sanity and personality intact. Sure, most of the times Sunil had used art as a form of escaping things in the past was during the fallout of a bad family argument or something like that, not a life-or-death situation, but meh. Same principle applied.

So, flipping to a clear page, Sunil began drawing John, starting off with his left leg. Sunil wasn't exactly the best at drawing his fellow humans, many were too fidgety for his liking, and he was atrocious at drawing women and girls, something he wanted to work on. He had a habit of starting his portraits with a completely random part of the body, thus why he was starting with the left leg.

Now, a dilemma. Sunil would probably end up showing his picture to John, and John, to put it charitably, was a few pounds heavier and a wee bit more meatier than Sunil. And Sunil didn't want to draw John to be fatter than the boy thought he was, in case he hurt his feelings. Then again, Sunil knew drawing John to be thin and of average physique might very well offend him even more. For all Sunil knew, John took after Oliver Cromwell and would like to be drawn warts and all. It would require a delicate balance to get the weight off John just right, to not make him fatter or thinner than he was, and as he pondered this dilemma, Sunil decided to just draw the boy's shoes.

John heard stirring at the bunks and figured it was one of the others. They checked the walls for any gaps or moving panels, before they attempted sleep.

"Hey John? You alright, watch going good?"

"Yeah..." he nodded, not really considering how far from 'alright' he was. Compared to the many names that had been read out by that Danya guy, he was perfect... But Celeste hadn't been one of them. A killed, nor a killer. That was great! He just didn't know where she was, or how long it would take for them to find each other, even if they walked in a straight line towards one another...

"Do you think... Anyone is going around, trying to kill other kids?" he asked after a few moments. A couple of people had more than two kills already - that can't have been an accident. He needed to pay more attention to the names of the killers though - he might know them and think he can trust them until it was too late.

"Did anyone at school make you think 'Fuck, if he had a gun, we'd all be dead'?" he asked, looking at the artist. He couldn't help but smile. He didn't bring his art stuff, simply because he thought he'd spend most of the trip getting to know Celeste's lady-bits better... How differently things turned out...

He wished he had his cell - with the picture of her just-napped face grinning at him. True, the battery would be dead from no-signal and the fact he kept looking at that picture, but it would have made him feel better.

"Owwww..." Celeste collapsed against the door of the building, sliding down it to sit, the sledgehammer dropping with a heavy thump to the ground. She winced, a hand going to her sore right shoulder, trying to massage some of the pain away. "Don't think I can carry that thing much longer...Wanna rest a bit?" she asked Kayla, looking pitifully up at her. Celeste wasn't faking any of it or milking it up for sympathy--her shoulder seriously hurt, her feet were sore, she was tired...

...In general, Celeste wasn't feeling so great. Sighing and looking at her feet, she tried to pass the time with conversation. "Hey...Kayla, you got any boyfriends?"

She had to wonder how John was doing...she hadn't heard his name pop up in any announcements, so he couldn't have been dead yet. Wonder what weapon he got...if he's hiding or running away this whole time. Either sounded like smart options to Celeste.

She'd have to venture inside this mill eventually, but not now, she thought. Now was to rest and get some feeling other than pain back into her shoulder.

Jojo lied in bed as he listened to his companions make small talk.

Eh, nothing to do until my shift I-

SLAM

-what was-

THUMP

Oh jesus did some psycho find us? he wondered as he dived under his bed for shelter. Any courage he could muster was dashed as he continued to remember his lack of a true weapon.

Useless, so useless. Why can't I do anything!? Wait, this is a sawmill, if I could get to one of the industrial saws I could sharpen some of this wood into something dangerous! Now if only we get through this alive I can finally protect Jay! And the others I guess...

Sunil looked up from his sketch pad when John asked whether he knew anyone who would be playing the game.

Sunil stared at the ceiling, trying to think of a good response to that difficult question. This island would change people. Inevitably, some would turn to the game (and according to the announcements, some already had), whether out of fear, desperation, insanity or just plain spite. Of course, Sunil didn't really care why some people were playing. The fact they were playing and could very well kill him was, frankly, all that mattered to him.

"I dunno," Sunil replied as truthfully as he could, idly scratching the back of his ear with his pencil. Frankly, this island would change people. Obviously, people would probably not have a massive personality change overnight. The quiet people would still be quiet, the horny people would still be horny, the whiny people would...be even whinier (justifiably, admittedly.) However, the island would change people. You couldn't just count on the juvenile delinquents and school bullies to instantly become murderers (there was a very distinctive line being harassing a nerd for lunch money and smashing that nerd's head to pieces with a sledgehammer), and you couldn't count on the hippie school activists to remain as idealistic as they always were back in school. "It's kinda hard to tell who'll decide to play. You got anyone we should watch out for? Aside from the guys who got mentioned in the announcements."

At that point, Jojo decided to add to the conversation by diving under the bed.

Sunil had heard the dull thumping sounds that had disturbed Jojo, but hadn't really paid much attention to them. He was used to hearing strange sounds in the distance, and had disregarded those noises as made by the wildlife of the island or caused by the general disrepair of the building. Giving Jojo a bemused look, he asked as sensitively as he could "What's wrong Jojo?"

((Kayla McArthur continued from... where ever Celeste continued from.))

"Sure, we can rest."

Kayla wasn't horribly tired. She had too much on her mind to feel fatigued. She had known some people who had been mentioned as killers or dead. Hayley Kelley she knew by reputation- it wasn't a good reputation. People called her a whore, a slut, a strumpet if they felt particularly archaic. It was not overly surprising that Hayley had been a killer.

"Hey, Kayla, you got any boyfriends?"

Kayla blinked, surprised at the question. Also, surprised at the plural boyfriends. Seemed a rather odd statement, and a little ironic considering her recent thoughts.

"Uh... no, I don't. I.... I don't really.... I just don't."

She didn't want to have to explain why. Please, please, let Celeste not ask why.

((Acacia Salinger continued from Watch Your Step))

Another day passed. Another day that they were still alive for. As each hour was whiled away, Acacia became more and more relieved that she had found Roman. He was someone she'd never really spoken to at school, and anyone who saw them might have considered them unlikely friends, though in the conversations they had shared over the past three days she'd discovered a mutual interest in cooking, which they had both been surprised to learn about in the other.

After evacuating the Hall of Mirrors, (which Acacia was faintly disappointed to realise 3 hours after leaving, that she'd never even entered the place) they had ventured north, skirting around the outsides of the mountains and through a sloped forest that looked deader than many of their classmates now were. She hadn't liked it, the felled trees stood short and forlorn, and there appeared to be nobody around even though she could hear snatches of voice carried on the wind, as though the ghosts of the trees were trying to talk to her. In vain Acacia had tried to listen to what they were saying, but they were impossible to decipher.

But then, a most welcoming sight.

A building. The first they had seen since the Hall of Mirrors, and that barely constituted a building when in face it was just another pile of bricks in the world's shittiest funfair. This was a proper, solid looking building, huge from the outside, and according to a sign pinned to the wall was a sawmill. The most important thing, for Acacia at least, was the presence of beds. Or at least what she assumed was beds. Through the window next to the main door she could see a sign pointing towards 'bunkhouses'. Cupping her hands around her eyes, she attempted to make more detail out; what looked like a desk, whitewashed walls, hey, a phone!

Acacia turned to open the door, spotting Celeste and Kayla slumped against the wall further down the building, and glanced back towards Roman, frowning, her hand automatically going to the gun which she had figured out how to stash in the waistband of her jeans. They didn't look threatening, if anything they looked exhausted, but she didn't want to take any chances. She took a couple of steps back, getting out of their immediate line of sight.

"There's two people there," Acacia said to Roman in a low voice. "About twenty metres to our left, against the wall." She tried to rack her brains. There was the girl with red hair who she was fairly sure had some kind of tragic past, but she'd never been quite interested enough to find out what it was, and the short girl whom she had a suspicion was called Celeste, and appeared to be holding a... hammer. A huge hammer, like a sledgehammer. In fact, she reasoned, that was probably what it was.

Acacia massaged her temples.
"What do you think? Shall we go inside and explore and possibly meet some crazies? Or go and talk to the crazies we've already found?"

Roman had never been so tired in all of his life. He was beyond tired. Beyond exhausted. He was beginning to doubt that there was a word that sufficiently described how worn out and drained he felt, physically and emotionally. Hours later, he was still kicking himself for abandoning the group at the hall of mirrors so quickly. In his desire to get away he hadn’t asked a single person if they’d seen Alex. He let his overactive imagination completely displace any thoughts of his sister.

Not that he’d seen hide nor hair of her since they’d been dumped here. They were quickly entering day 3 of island time and he was no closer to finding her now than he’d been on day one. ‘Whoever said that twins had some kind of magic bond to each other was talking out of their ass,’ he silently groused as he followed Acacia.

She’d brought them north from the hall of mirrors, towards the area where they had first met. Of all of the people that he could have been travelling with, Roman felt pretty lucky that he’d run into Acacia and that she’d stuck with him. They’d had some interesting conversations, which was nice because Roman could pretend this was something other than complete and utter impending doom. Even though there was no way this trip was going to turn out well for any of them, at least his time here had been spent with pleasant company.

Acacia’s pace seemed to pick up as they approached a new building. Roman hung back a bit, trying not to crowd her as she peeked into window. He squeezed his sun baton nervously as her hand dipped to the gun she was carrying. A fine sweat broke out across his forehead as she ducked back towards him. With as tired as he felt, he had thought that his body was beyond producing any more adrenaline. Yet he would swear that he could feel it flooding his system, making his heart race as Acacia began speaking to him.

"There's two people there. About twenty metres to our left, against the wall. What do you think? Shall we go inside and explore and possibly meet some crazies? Or go and talk to the crazies we've already found?"

His mouth felt so dry. Roman had to lick his lips several times before answering. Even though he tried to keep his voice low, he felt as if he was screaming out their location to whoever Acacia had spotted. “It’s so dark out here. Why don’t we try to slip inside without them noticing? Maybe we’ll get lucky and there won’t be any crazies inside. Then we could get some sleep,” he whispered hopefully.

John instantly forgot whatever Sunil was saying as soon as Jojo dived under the bed. Sunil, Jojo and John - they sounded like a circus troupe...

"What's wrong Jojo?"

John instantly looked out the window, rising up a little to get a better view. He'd heard the dull thud, but hadn't thought anything of it. Now he was. It was obviously something heavy. A cannonball? Comedy-sized mallet? Sledgehammer? Corpse...?

"I can't see anything..." he whispered, moving his face closer to the glass. "Go check out the door..."

He wasn't going to volenteer to do that. Who knew what weapon might have been aimed at the doorway? It was bad enough a sniper's scope could have been aimed at him through the window.

"No?" Celeste shrugged, staring at her feet. They were probably getting blisters. Or if they weren't know, they'd get soem eventually. If she didn't get shanked this very night, anyway. "Eh...s'fine, I know a couple of girls who don't." Namely, me--not til recently. A wry grin appeared on her face, and she shifted her eyes back to look at Kayla again. "Some of 'em have girlfriends."

Well, no boyfriend. There went that topic for small-talk. Celeste could probably talk about John, but...Well, Kayla might get pissed off if Celeste talked about herself mainly. Walk off and leave her, and then where would Celeste be? Pulling one foot towards herself, taking off her shoe, she started to rub her sore foot, thinking of another topic of conversation.

"What about...grades? You smart, stupid, average? ....I'm kinda average myself, I guess. Got some smart areas, but eh." She shrugged again. "...Just kinda feel like talking while resting. Keeps us from falling asleep in plain view and being horribly murdered, you know?"

Jojo started to blush with embarassment as he realized he was the only one who was so twitchy about the various sounds.

"I-I'm sorry its just I've been so nervous and scared lately. Seeing Maria...like that is kinda messing me up right now. That and not knowing where Jay is has been getting to me. It doesn't help I have no real weapon, I've got pencils and books with camo gear to hide with. Sunil at least you have some cans that could cause a concussion or something if they hit the right spot."

Jojo perked up a bit and smiled slightly as he continued, "I'm changing that though, there should be some table saws installed that would be too difficult for them to get rid of right? Well if I found some of the wood I could sharpen it into some makeshift weapons like spears or something. I know enough about industrial woodworking tools to not get cut by them while working with them. We could go and do it right now if you guys wanted since its bright out."

Staring bemusedly at Jojo as the flustered boy explained his twitchiness and anxiety, Sunil sighed, scratching his chin as he did so.

Hmm. He needed a shave.

If Sunil was a badass, he would attempt to shave with a broken saw or one of the many jagged pieces of sharp wood littered around the old, disused sawmill. However, Sunil was not a badass, so he would have to double-check to see if the terrorists had left his safety razor in his bag. If not, he'd just have to die with some untended stubble on his face.

However, his mind when brought away from the issue of shaving when Jojo said his name. Then Jojo reminded Sunil of the cans.

Oh yes, those fucking cans.

Sunil was still bitter at his near useless weapon roll. Even if he did get them up, they'd probably be filled with marbles or paint or something as yet another example of Danya's impeccable humour. And if there was food in there, it'd probably be so close to inedible it'd be illegal in 42 of the 50 states. The fact that Jojo, in all his infinite wisdom, seemed to think they, in some strange and impractical way, actually had some functionality as an actual weapon (instead of just a way to keep Sunil amused as he tried to concoct ways to get the cans opened) didn't make it any less infuriating.

John and Jojo both seemed to have similar plans. Well, similar in the sense that they both involved going outside into the morning sun (wait, was it light already? Fuck. Sunil didn't keep watch for hardly any of that night. He'd have to make up during the day and the next night.) John's involved just checking the noises outside (pretty pointless in Sunil's opinion), and getting Jojo a table saw and a plank of wood (slightly less pointless, though Sunil did think he should get one of those impromptu weapons as well. Despite what Jojo may have thought, canned food is not a valid weapon.)

John seemed to be too cowardly to leave, and Sunil, making no attempt to hide the growing irritation in his voice, spoke. "Firstly, John. It was your idea to check out the sounds first. Secondly, you have the best weapon here. As we all know by now, I just have some useless cans and Jojo has some fucking camo gear...." Turning to Jojo, he said "Well, since I have no real reason to leave the sawmill at the present moment in time, I guess I'll wait to see which one of you decides they're not a pussy and goes out first."

((I'm terribly sorry about holding this up, I mistakenly thought I had another person to go before I had to post.))

Kayla stared at Celeste, maybe a little too long. She had never been the small talk type of person, preferring to keep her head down and avoid talking to people. All people did was leave, eventually. Better to avoid the pain, right?

... right?

In any case, a question had been asked, and a response was mandated. "I suppose I would be labeled as a 'smart' kid, as I maintained a decent GPA. Of course, I may come to regret spending more time exercising my brain and less time exercising my body. I think I'd feel more ready for... this, as disturbing as the thought of being 'ready' for this is, if I was able to do more than ten push-ups."

She frowned slightly, turning away from Celeste. For the first time in a while, the lack of... anything happening allowed her mind to consider the... gravity of this situation.

"I... I really don't want to die. I wonder, does it hurt? Is it quick, like a candle being blown out, or is the suffering prolonged, each moment stretching away into eternity? A melancholy subject, but...."

She sniffled slightly, glancing away from Celeste and wiping her eyes. When she looked back, there wasn't even the memory of her tears apparent on her face.
