((Reiko Ishida continued from It's a New Day))

It had taken Reiko a good portion of the day to navigate her way down the mountain, having gotten lost on a few occasions. By the time she finally got to level ground again, it was well past noon, the heat of the sun beating down on the small girl. There was no relief in sight from the heat as she found herself surrounded by stumps, the last remnants of what was once no doubt a large an beautiful forest.

Reiko had been fortunate enough to not encounter anyone else up to this point. Unfortunately, that also gave her brain time to actually catch up with the rest of her. Images of.... of her victims flashed through her mind, the contorted features of their faces fading in and out as their deaths replayed themselves in her mind.

Four faces. Four deaths. Four more reasons Reiko was going to hell, if there was such a place. The worst part of it all though, is that over the past few hours Reiko had to herself, her mind started to justify her actions again. Even Raina, who had done nothing to defend herself. You were just defending yourself, if you didn't kill them, they would have killed you, and on and on. She wasn't sure if she felt worse at that point about the acts she had committed, or that she found it so easy to justify her actions. All she could do right now was just keep moving forward. Keep moving and stay alive.

After walking for a bit longer, Reiko had decided to take a short break. Finding a suitable place to sit down, in this case a log, the girl opened up her pack again. Fishing through the contents, she removed her medkit. She couldn't do much herself, but at the very least she needed to make sure the cut on her head remained covered, in case of infection. After tearing off some of the gauze bandage she had left, Reiko applied it to her head.

Once this was done, Reiko tried to stifle a yawn. She still hadn't had a chance to sleep, and quite frankly, she wasn't sure she wanted to sleep. Sleeping meant letting her guard drop, both in a literal and figurative sense. Despite the images of her victims appearing unbidden in her conscious, while she was awake, she was able to focus on other things to keep those images at bay. If she slept, well, those images would be able to run freely in her mind. Still, maybe she could... just... rest... for....

Just as the girl started to nod off on her little perch, someone spoke, snapping her instantly back into full alert. Pivoting off the log, her right knee on the ground next to her left foot, Reiko quickly grabbed the sai sitting on top of her stuff inside her bag, brandishing it in her dominant hand. She found herself looking at the barrel of a shotgun, and behind the weapon was... Maxwell Lombardi. Well fuck. Reiko thought, knowing that she was at a major disadvantage. This was really her first time having to deal with a gun, and it didn't escape her thoughts that Maxwell was just the type to actually use one.

"What, did you miss me or something?" Reiko said in response to the boy. She didn't know why she decided to respond sarcastically. Maybe it was just that this boy rubbed her the wrong way. For one, he couldn't even remember the name of his date at prom, not to mention their last little interaction didn't go overly well. Keeping Maxwell in sight at all times, Reiko tried to look for her options. While she wasn't just going to roll over and die, the fact was she was rather injured and fatigued, not to mention outclassed in terms of weaponry. At the same time, if she just turned and ran, Maxwell would probably just shoot her, and even if through some miracle he missed or she survived, it wouldn't be much of a task for him to outrun the smaller girl.

Reiko stood up fully, making sure her daypack was within easy reach. The distance between the two was a bit too far, especially because Maxwell was holding a gun. "Clearly you want something, or else I wouldn't be standing right now. Unless maybe... you're afraid?" inside, Reiko was chastising herself for trying to goad Maxwell into doing something, especially because that something would most likely turn Reiko into meaty chunks. There was just... something inside her that compelled her to prod him, to push his buttons until she found the right one to set him off. It was almost as if her subconscious had decided it just doesn't give a fuck any more, that every moment that Reiko lived was just delaying the inevitable. That despite constantly telling herself she needed to survive, to avenge her fallen companions, to find Reika's killer, to reunite with Sarah, deep down, none of that mattered.

Avenging her friends wasn't going to bring them back. Finding Kris and removing her from this world wasn't going to magically revive her sister. Being back together with her girlfriend would only bring more pain for both of them. She wondered what Sarah would think when she found out the love of her life was a murderer. A cold blooded, think-only-about-yourself, don't give a fuck killer, who on some subconscious level was just looking for an easy out of this fucked up game, and yet at the same time compelled to fight to live another day, even at the expense of others. Hell, she'd gone this far already, she couldn't exactly just turn back time and spare the lives of the four people she had already killed. She was already past the point of no return. Might as well see how far the shit storm went.

"So what'll it be, Mr. Lombardi? You gunna shoot, or just stand there trying to look all tough while holding up a girl?"

Reiko glared at Maxwell as he gave his little speech, not moving an inch. He seemed to be savouring his little moment to finally get her back for their encounter at the gazebo. Reiko wasn't listening to him, instead still trying to find a way out of her current situation. She didn't really like the thought of being shot if she tried to make a run for it, and at the same time going for him would end with the same res- what did that fucker just say?

Of all the things to bring up, Maxwell chose to say something about Reika. Not just bring her up, mock her. He continued to talk, and each word that came out of his mouth just added fuel to the fire. Reiko didn't say anything, not yet. Let him have his final moments of glory. Even when he was finished talking, she didn't flinch as he took aim at her. She was not going to cower in front of this asshole, begging for her life.

Click.

Maxwell pulled the trigger, but nothing happened. In his initial confusion as to why the gun hadn't gone off, Reiko finally saw her chance. A few quick steps later, and Reiko was in close enough to strike. Maxwell cocked his gun, and aimed at Reiko, but she was able to use her small stature to her advantage, ducking under the gun, while using her hands to force his aim upwards. With her hands otherwise occupied, Reiko did the first thing that came to her mind, driving her head into Maxwell's solar plexus.

This combined with the gun shot sent both of them to the ground, with Reiko landing on top. Struggling into an upright position, she looked at the face of the boy who had dared to mock her sister. "I'M GOING TO FUCKING RIP YOUR GOD DAMN TONGUE OUT YOU FUCKER!" Reiko screamed at Maxwell, the hand holding her weapon rising before she thrust it towards Maxwell's throat.

Things didn't go quite as Reiko had planned. Maxwell turned out to be a resilient bastard, and after their brief scuffle, had the upper hand. Once again, Reiko was looking down the barrel of a gun, only this time she was on the ground, propping herself up her elbows. Maxwell's flurry of punches did further damage to her face, and she could feel one of her teeth were loose. No new cuts as far as she could tell, but her face was going to be a mess. Not that any of that would matter in a moment, since Maxwell was probably going to kill her.

"Well, any last words?"

Reiko knew what he wanted. He wanted her to beg for him to spare his life, to admit defeat. To grovel at his feet while he savoured her final moments in this world before shooting her. She wasn't going to give him that satisfaction however. A smile crossed Reiko's features as she stared directly into Maxwell's eyes. No, if she was going to die, then she was going to die fighting to the bitter end.

"Go eat shit you fucking asshole." she spat out, her eyes daring Maxwell to finish what he started.

Maxwell had, predictably, more or less ignored her final jab, and looked all but ready to pull the trigger. Reiko stared into his eyes, wanting him to remember her face when he continued on his merry way. He most likely wouldn't even remember her in a day or two, but she didn't care. At least she tried. She had given it everything she got, and she had lost. Now it was time for her time in this god-forsaken game to end. Now she just had to wait.
.
..
..."DROP THE DAMN GUN!"

BANG!

Reiko reflexively flinched as the sound of the gun invaded her ears. She thought for a moment she had gone deaf, but was still alive. It took a few moments for the girl to figure out what exactly happened, but once she did, her eyes widened slightly. Although she couldn't see her face, Reiko recognized the red hair of Vera Osbourne, the girl that Maxwell had been tagging along with during prom. This was confirmed by Maxwell, who uttered her name, keeping himself open for a brief moment.

Dropping from her elbows down to her back, Reiko took the opening that Maxwell left to unleash a kick into his shins, causing him to yell out in pain. Scrambling away from Maxwell, who was no doubt pissed off at this point, Reiko managed to get to her feet. Willing every last ounce of strength and determination into her legs, the girl snagged the straps of her bag in her left hand and took off as fast as her feet would take her. She didn't even bother taking the time to grab her weapon, due to the fact that it would have cost her too much time and Maxwell would have easily been able to finish her off. She could worry about arming herself later. For now, she just ran.
