((Sarah Xu out of nowhere from False Awakening))

She was almost there, heart pounding, feeling like the oxygen was jamming it's way into her lungs,
having expended every Joule of energy she could. She could see them properly now, Bridget was easy to recognise with her hair, the other two... Kimberly was shot, and she didn't give a fuck who the guy was. Back up onto the soft sand, almost tripping over herself as she navigated the unsteady surface. She finally stumbled over to the trio, practically falling to the ground next to them.

The boy was injured as well, but that could wait, especially since he seemed intent on blubbering uselessly. She put her hand on the bandage to keep it steady as she pushed him out of the way with the rest of her body. She would have chewed him out for losing his head but was far too busy concentrating on calming herself. Shaking and hyperventilating like she was wasn't going to help the situation.Though between the sprint and seeing the state Kimberly was in she had a lot to come down from.

Calm down Sarah, relax, you'll be fine.

"K-Kimberly, try to, try to ca-calm down, you're gonna be fine." She didn't really believe it herself, with all the blood, and she doubted Kimberly would either, but she knew panick would only exacerbate the bleeding. Higher blood pressure, faster bleed; More movement, faster bleed. From what she'd seen as she'd approached it seemed there was already plenty of exacerbation to go around.

"Bridge, get behind her and raise her up." She turned to the boy "You, call an amb... w-wait fuck... Just get another kit!"

She swallowed and tried to breath slower, away from the wound. The last thing Kimberly needed was for it to get even more contaminated. She had the feeling the other two had already done plenty of that.

"Okay... let's have a look." She lifted the cloth that had been so haphazardly pressed onto the wound so she could see what was going on.

Okay okay, uh, darkish, constant flow...

She sighed with relief. If they'd hit an artery she'd have been in trouble. As it was, Kimberly was practically in the clear. The now even more blood-drenched girl laughed nervously, her jitters calming altogether as she discarded the bandage and pulled open the duffel bag sitting by her side.

"Okay Kimberly, you're going to be fine. Tell me if you start feeling drowzy though okay?"

Sarah wasn't totally certain what procedure dictate she do next. The wound was still bleeding, that needed to stop, and quickly, but there was also sand around the wound and she had the feeling letting that stay in there would be a problem. Ironically, the first problem was already doing a decent job fixing the second, the stream of blood pulling most of the sand out as it came, but it wouldn't hurt to help it, would it?

Indecision left as her hands grasped cool plastic. Pulling it out, she wrenched the cap of the water bottle off with a snap and carefully poured over and around the hole in Kimberly's shoulder, clearing away what was left of the sand. The diluted blood ran everywhere, but the pair were already soaked in it, and she was pretty sure the wound wasn't life threatening. Pretty sure. The way Kimberly had just wailed didn't help inspire confidence. Hurry up.

Fuck She'd forgotten this was a bullet wound. She quickly leaned over to check the other side of Kimberley's shoulder. There wasn't an exit wound. Now that she knew, she wasn't sure how to feel about it. At least she only had to worry about clotting the blood on one side of the girl's body. She'd never dealt with anything like this before, the closest she'd gotten was when Joel tripped over... She couldn't believe she hadn't thought about them until then, but this really, really wasn't the time. The thought that her breaking down again might hurt the person she was tending to only made her feel worse. She tried to push the thoughts back but could already feel the tears coming and knew it was useless. She'd just have to be quick.

She had to try and distract herself. Though probably pointless, she hastily poured some water on her hands anyway as the boy returned with another medkit. At least that saved her digging around for her own.

"Thanks."

She almost missed registering Kimberly's question as she unzipped the pack and pulled out a gauze pad, folding it carefully.

"S-sorry, it's Sarah, relax."

She placed the pad across the wound, pressing as firmly as she dared. Now they just had to wait.

"Okay, should be ano... another ten minutes before this stops."

"Could be twelve, s-since you're a smoker." She tried to smile at the girl she was now pressing against, but the pathetic attempt at a joke only set her crying wholesale.

She missed them. Her brothers, Her parents, she'd last seen them before running to join the group for camp. She'd expected it to be the last time she'd be with her school friends, not the last time she'd see her family. Suddenly that simple goodbye meant so much more than she'd realised at the time. She had barely even paid attention, she'd been so eager to run off and find Reiko... She pulled out another gauze, placing it over the first and pressing down on them again... She wanted to be with Reiko again. She knew it was selfish, she knew she'd see her soon enough and that she could look after herself. But she just wanted to have it back, the way it had been down the back of the bus, kissing, chatting, falling asleep in each other's arms as the gas had worked it's way through the cabin... She retched as the kidnapping invaded her thoughts. She couldn't believe those fuckers were taking her memories from her too.

Sarah hadn't looked up as the others talked, none of their speech formed into words in her mind. Her subconscious seemed to register the anger in Bridget's voice, the tension filtering into her body only making it harder to get a hold of herself. Now that the bleeding was under control she didn't have much to do except cry.

She'd been this way plenty of times before. Hearing about massacres, coups, genocide. Watching as the planes hit, hearing the president declare war... when she'd visited Hiroshima, when she'd seen the deathcamps in Germany. Every other time she'd had some way to console herself, some action she could take, something she could do. Even if it was just to talk to someone about it, wave a picket sign, put up posters, raise awareness. It might've been token, it might've been pointless, but at least it was something.

She was out of her depth. Way, way out of her depth. And for once, her family wasn't there to console her. All she wanted was to be back home, to just sink into her parent's arms and know everything was going to be fine. She crushed her eyelids together; wishing, begging for it all to be a dream. Concentrating on the darkness almost made it seem possible.

let me go.

Kimberly shifted under her palms again, the sounds of her whimpering echoing in Sarah's mind. She had the life of one of her classmates in her hands and no matter how hard she tried, no matter how much she tried to will herself away, she couldn't escape reality. Clicking her heels three times wasn't going to change a fucking thing.

I want to die.

In her mind she knew it wasn't what she wanted to do. And as always when she thought those words, she was more distressed by her thinking than motivated to take her own life. But it always represented the worst she could feel, and even though the thought of suicide left her terrified she knew, in a weird kind of way, that she could only feel better from then.

Sarah rubbed her eyes on the rolled up sleeve of her jacket, then readjusted her glasses with the back of her wrist because the stupid things had gone wonky. At least she could see now that her sobbing had stopped, though her mouth still hung a little open and she didn't look much less distraught. Her mind was in a better place though.

That was it. Kimberly's blood had stopped seeping through the gauze she pressed on so tightly, the last replacement she'd layered on had barely stained, and now she could think about what to do next.

She knew you really weren't supposed to remove the gauze. Maybe bandage it up or something but not remove it. That was best left to the doctors. They'd disinfect, anaesthetise and stitch up the wound. Maybe give the patient a lollipop in a characteristically sanitary plastic wrapper...

A sudden burst of shouting made her flynch, but the words caught her attention. Brendan had left. And now that she looked around she realized so had several others. The thought that their group was already breaking up almost set her crying again. But again, she scrunched her eyelids and tried to concentrate on the person in front of her. If people left they would have been useless anyway, though to pretend Roland, with his weapon, with his shouting, didn’t intimidate her a little would have been a lie. At least with Brendan armed and around she hadn’t had reason to worry...

CONCENTRATE DAMN IT

Wound. Right. Stopped bleeding, okay, need to stop it restarting, need to prevent infection.

She stopped pushing on the bandages and washed her hands under what was left in the water bottle, scrubbing her arms halfway to her elbows. Her sleeves were still out of the way, perfect. She lifted an antiseptic wipe out of the nearest medkit.

“K-Kimberly, I’m going to… going to… disinfect this now, okay?"

How long were they going to be there anyway? Days? Weeks? Long enough.

"Th-then I-I'll stitch you up."

She began methodically cleaning in and around the surface of the bullet wound, being as gentle as she possibly could. She couldn't help the fact that it'd probably hurt Kimberly even more. Personally she'd long since developed a tolerance to the stinging, she guessed knowing exactly what it was doing and preventing helped her cope with the temporary discomfort. To be honest she actually kind of enjoyed it, which was... more than a little weird.

Sarah listened as Kimberly and Bridget spoke, made one last check for grit in her wound, threaded the needle from her medkit more easily than she'd anticipated, and began to stitch her up. She pushed the needle in, the epidermis not offering much resistance as she turned it under, and through. She'd never done anything quite like it. She'd had it done to her before, and she'd done some sewing over the years, but trying to stitch another human being's skin back together felt strange, really strange.

She stopped just as she was about to make the second stitch, Kimberly had started talking about going after her attacker. She leaned back a little from her patient, enough to see her eyes.

Sarah hadn't been talking before, but her silence now had a different force behind it. She was weighing up the arguments in her mind. Kimberly wanted revenge. That was silly, people were scared and accidents like that were bound to happen. She didn't want to help in some stupid vengeance plot, but if she just let the girl run off by herself it could only end badly. If Kris was freaking out then she needed to be stopped; but someone needed to sit her down and let her unwind, not injure her as well.

I'd be the one cleaning up anyway...

Besides, they were going to need as many people as they could if they were going to even try to live through this. She already had a few embryonic ideas about that and none of them were going to be helped by having a tiny group. She could try and talk her down after she'd finished sewing her back together; which she now prepared to continue.

"Fine." It was a statement, neither begrudging nor enthusiastic. There seemed no reason to say otherwise, she needed some time to think anyway, somewhere to go. Shelter was more attractive than the beach anyway, and if the girl lying in front of her wanted to find Kris there was hardly any better way than to go where the people clustered.

Especially since people seemed to be leaving at an incredible rate... She looked up as Dutchy sped off, looking up in time for Roland's assurances. It took a moment for it to click as he too turned and ran. Away. Both of them. He'd said they'd be right back but she had a bad feeling Dutchy was doing something rash.

"Dutchy! DUTCHY! ROLAND!" She was fed up now. Fed up with people running off, fed up with not knowing why people ran off and fed up with people going stupid and doing stupid things. If people didn't act like such complete fucking morons Kimberly wouldn't have been shot and they'd all be halfway off the fucking island by now.

"COME BACK!"

Though what Dutchy might have been up to gnawed at the back of her mind the entire time, Sarah had finished stitching Kimberly's arm back together, and began carefully threading the little piece of string back around itself. Knotting it a third time, she felt pretty confident the stitching would hold. Probably. Taking out one last antiseptic wipe, she cleaned around her neat little stitches, taking an odd sort of pride in her handiwork.

She looked at it a little longer before fishing out a bandage and covering it up, wrapping it over and under the arm. She thought momentarily of asking Kimberly to take her sweater off so she could better fix the bandage around her neck, but thought better of it. If it started slipping later she could do it then, maybe somewhere more private. She looked over her shoulder as she tied the bandage in place. Where the hell are they?

She nodded when Kimberly mentioned finding Reiko. Finding her girlfriend was always going to be a priority for her, obviously. And now more than ever she needed her help, her shoulder to cry on, though she knew Reiko was more than capable of looking after herself.

The next sentence killed her.

"Since Kris... killed her sister and all."

She looked into Kimberly's eyes, subconsciously waiting for the joke, the "just kidding!" that she needed to hear. But she knew it wasn't coming. What little hope she’d mustered drained out of her face and out of her mind as she began to choke up again. "n-n a-aa c-c-mna" She stuttered helplessly, trying to find words to deny with. She retched pathetically, feeling like she was going to vomit.

Reika had been her friend since the start of that year, and for the past couple of months they'd spent so much time together with Reiko and corny as it was she was starting to think of her as her sister too and... she was dead.

Sarah stared blankly at the ground, her whole body shaking. She couldn't be dead, that wasn't right it must have just been a mistake, how did Kimberly even know that? It had to just be some nasty rumour, something Kris had said to spite her or or...

No-one was meant to die, their school was better than that bullshit, none of them deserved it, and Reika deserved it least. She was the sweetest, nicest person in the whole fucking world and Kris had murdered her. She didn't deserve it. She didn't fucking DESERVE it.

She buried her face in her hands and pitched forward into the sand, curling into a tight little ball as she wailed herself hoarse and sobbed herself dry.

Sarah dug her hands into the sand, squeezing handfuls of the silicate as if she could extract escape from them if she tried hard enough. The granules stabbed at her palms, the force making it feel like her hands were burning. She needed to take her anger out on something, and she was the only thing she felt she could hurt. She screamed again, as much to cut at her throat as to express her pain. The force of it made her choke on her own breath, and as she coughed and spluttered she realised she couldn't keep screaming, and that left her with nothing to do but sob.

That someone was trying to cheer her up, that someone cared enough to try, only made her cry even more. But with her friend beside her she let the pressure go and stopped trying to torture herself. She appreciated Dutchy's effort, but she didn't want to be happy. She wasn't meant to be happy. She had failed, and though she knew it wasn't final, that she had to carry on, to continue, she didn't feel like she could will herself to stand.

She didn't have to. A force dragged her up by her arms from where she lay. She let Bridget give her back her footing, not willing herself to be heavier like she did as a child when she tantrummed. Like she probably would have if she'd tried a minute earlier. Then something unexpected happened, and Bridget was whispering in her ear.

"You need to stay strong. People look up to you. If anyone can lead us to safety, it's you."

Bridget's words startled her, abruptly ending her sobs. As the other girl stepped away Sarah looked at her for a moment before drying her tears on her sleeve. A weak smile fixed itself on her face as she sniffled. That someone had faith in her was more than she could have hoped for.

She could suddenly see exactly how much work lay ahead. She wiped her hands across her legs to clear away the sand. It was a start. If she couldn't save Reika, then she could at least make her proud.

Sarah offered Dutchy her hand and pulled him to his feet, gently hugging him once he was upright.

"Th-thank you for... for helping" she said softly. Dutchy's kindness seemed so necessary in the situation they were in, more than it ever had back at bayview, and she really appreciated it.

After a couple of seconds she relinquished and began moving to gather her bags. All the bags. The first aid kits she stuffed into her duffel bag, her backpack she crouched into and lifted with her legs. It wasn't really that heavy. It was full of books, clothes and other mostly useless but sentimental paraphernalia that she felt compelled to hang onto. She'd find somewhere to store it until they were free, the beach definitely wasn't the best location though.

She was just throwing her duffel bag over her shoulders when Kimberly stopped by her.

"Thanks,"

It... meant a lot to Sarah. She barely knew Kimberly, and knowing that she'd earned her appreciation made her feel as if she was already doing something useful. The words which followed took some of the warmth away from the sentiment for her though, and she felt her smile slip slightly, though it would soon return when she had a bit more time to think.

As much as she wanted an easy scapegoat she just couldn't bring herself to agree with Kimberly. Kris was probably just as scared as she was and... people could do stupid things when they were scared. Revenge was too simple, survival would be complicated. Survival would take all their effort.

But they were going to do it.

Sarah picked up the riot shield, sniffled again, and quickly set off after the others.

((Sarah Xu continued Elsewhere))

((Thread pretty much concluded.))
