((G063 - Ericka Bradley - Start))

Ericka had been one of the first to awaken on the island, or so she assumed. That she hadn't seen or heard anyone could easily be a sign of the opposite, just as well as it could support the conclusion that she had come to. Still, any advantage even, occasionally, one that was only perceived could, and should, be drawn upon.

Ericka sat between treeline and shoreline, surrounded by grasses and shrubs of many nameless varieties. The waves gently broke against the sandy beach and an occasional seabird could be heard or seen. The setting was calm enough that under normal circumstances it would be an ideal reading spot, but at the moment, under the current conditions, Ericka's mind was anything but tranquil.

She was repeatedly reading the manuals that were packaged with her equipment. Their pages were damp, moistened not by the nearby and ever-present seawater, but instead by the young girl's tears. Many questions and thoughts swept through her mind, so many that she could barely keep track of them. One, however, managed to stand out: He was right... as completely and utterly paranoid as he had seemed, Ericka's father had been completely and utterly... right...

Ericka gave another cursory scan of Danya's Survival Guide, and wondered; if she had listened to her father would he have given the same advice contained in the tear-stained booklet?

She gently touched her neck, and felt the collar. That damn collar that kept us chained here like a dog on a leash. Yeah... The students were no more than animals to Danya, and SotF his glorified and horrifying dog fighting ring.

Ericka stroked her one stroke of luck, the gun that she had been assigned. Although she would have difficulty learning to use it, it would still be easier than learning how to use a sword, a bow, or an axe. And the weapon use manual cleared up a few misunderstandings that would have led her to harm herself or to waste time, which amounts to the same thing on the island.

A noise came from a patch of tall grass behind Ericka. She quickly grabbed for her gun, scrambled to her feet, and turned around, gripping the weapon with both hands and aiming it at the grass. The noise could be the wind or an animal... But it could also be another student, a threat, and she didn't want to be caught unprepared.

"Wh-Who's there?" Ericka asked with fear and panic obvious in her voice, mustering as much courage as she could she added "I was assigned a gun and I'm not afraid to use it." She hoped that if it was a person that was there, and they were hostile, that the threat would drive them off, because Ericka was afraid to shoot, and she didn't even wanna think about what would happen if a hostile called her bluff.

(G114-Rena Peters- Start)

Rena clutched her head, and sat up weakly. Her world was spinning, and she felt dazed and nauseous. What was going on? Why couldn't she remember anything?

She managed to sit up straight after a moment, and looked at her surroundings. None of this seemed familiar. Woods? Why was she in the woods, wasn't she supposed to be on her trip?

Something snapped in her head suddenly, and she felt another wave of spinning rack her head. She placed her left hand on the ground, grabbing it desperately for some sort of support. The room, being tied to chairs, those people with masks that video!

Bile rose in her throat, and she swallowed it down, telling herself to be calm. Those people had killed her teachers. She could still see the blood. Try as she did, Rena couldn't erase the pictures out of her mind. She felt several tears slide down her cheeks.

Don't cry, don't cry, don't cry, don't cry.

Like it would do any good.

Rena breathed deeply. Survival of the Fittest. She'd heard of that before. Something that her brother Jake had told her about, right? A show where high school students kill each other to see who lives to the end. The very thought of such a show existing, of people watching it had made her sick. Now she was on it.

She let go of her head, finally taking in her surroundings. Trees. She gingerly brought her fingers up to her neck, where a tight collar was secured. Another flash of thought screamed through her head. Her locket. She ran her fingers across her neck, searching for the gold locket she'd worn for years. Gone. They'd taken her locket? Or maybe it'd just fallen off?

Rena shook her head. She was freaking out, she could feel her breath getting harder and faster paced. But sitting still in one place was going to get her killed. She knew that. Slowly she stood. Another wave of dizziness crossed her, and she leaned against a tree. She closed her eyes and counted to three. When she opened them, reality had returned.

Somewhat.

Rena took another look around, finally spotting something on the ground. She moved towards the object, a duffel bag, which was laying next to the one she had brought. She pawed gently through her own belongings. Nothing of use, besides a jacket. She tore her eyes from her bag to the new one.

"Girl 114."

She was nothing more than a number. Rena begged herself not to cry again. Things were going to be okay. Gently, she unzipped the duffel and looked around in it. A map, food, some sort of book, and...

A giant club?

She pulled the club out of the bag, simply looking at it. Great. Two thoughts immediately passed through her mind. The first was that this weapon would cause a lot of blood to pour out of a persons head. The second was that she was never going to use it.

Rena knew she needed a strategy, but her head was reeling, and it was still too hard for her to think straight. She slowly stood, hanging the new duffel around her shoulder, and heading forwards.

She thought about pulling out the map, but then realized that even if she did have it she wouldn't know what places where safe or not. She silently cursed and pushed forward.

Not five minutes had passed when she heard the voice.

"Wh-Who's there? I was assigned a gun and I'm not afraid to use it."

Rena stopped dead in her tracks. Someone had heard her. Someone with a gun had heard her. She thought of pulling out her club, thought of turning and running away, thought of simply giving up and dying right then and there.

But something inside her made her talk.

"I don't want to hurt you!"

It then occurred to her that it was very possible that this girl didn't care whether or not Rena was wanted to hurt her and was going to shoot anyway. Her hear raced, and, out of some desperation, she spoke again.

"I'm...Rena? Rena Peters! Who...who are you?"

She hoped to God this didn't get her killed.

Alex's eyes snapped open and ravaged his mind for a comprehensible thought. His mind screamed the video, his capture, his fate. Damn, D...that dick is going to pay for this. He had to find out what the asshole had assigned him. With small movements, Alex grabbed his pack and slid his hand through the folds.

Map... first aid kit... pill box... eh?

He slid it quietly out of the bag and saw the generic 'CAFFEINE' label. Alex could have got worse. He scanned the small opening he had been dumped in. He could smell the sea. He slowly clambered onto his feet.

Danya has my friends turned against me, and my enemies will hunt me with a passion.

Either way, Alex had to hide. His jeans (or skin, for that matter) would not be helpful at all, the colour they were. He grabbed the soil beneath his feet and rubbed them into his jeans, and hands also applying a fine layer of sand.

With a sigh, Alex grabbed the soil again and began to smear it on his $100 hair and carefully cleaned skin. The whole process took him a few minutes. His hands and clothes were the right colour but he needed to see his reflection to get face and hair the correct shade of brown.

He turned toward the sea and walked slowly towards it, back arched like a cat. He watched his footing, dancing through a field of noisy obstacles. There it was.

The sea appeared to him in all it's glory.

SNAP!

Alex grimaced at his own foolishness and dashed for a mossy tree, a short distance away.

'Wh-Who's there? I was assigned a gun and I'm not afraid to use it.'

Alex opened his mouth to speak.

'I don't want to hurt you! ...I'm...Rena? Rena Peters! Who...who are you?' another voice called across the beach.

A pair of girls, one with a gun. I need that gun, but I won't kill that girl to get it...

He needed to lure them over here. That gun needed to get closer to him.

'DON'T SHOOT! I'm stuck!' Alex cried at the top of his lungs. And without a further movement, camouflaged amongst the thin moss.

The source of the noise introduced itself: Rena Peters. Ericka didn't recall ever meeting the girl, so it was hard to judge whether the girl was a threat...

... Come to think of it... How can you tell who's threatening, anyway? Does anyone really now another person that much? Actions show who's not a threat, and inaction can have a malevolence all it's own. Since Ericka couldn't see Rena well, she had to consider the girl a threat, Rena had to leave.

Just as Ericka was about to demand that Rena leave, another voice called out from the shadows, a boy from the sound of it. He claimed he was stuck. Ericka glanced back and forth between the locations of the voices. She couldn't see either of them, and she didn't like it.

Either of them could be setting a trap, Ericka thought, or both could... or both together... She didn't know who she could trust. Then she had an idea.

"I won't shoot either of you unless you try something," she decided out loud, " but that doesn't mean I trust you."
"Rena, you go help that boy if he tries to hurt you I'll shoot him, okay?"

Rena nearly jumped out of her skin when the new voice introduced itself. She didn't recognize it, but he was claiming to be stuck. She had the sinking feeling that maybe she shouldn't have said anything and ran instead.

"Rena, you go help that boy if he tries to hurt you I'll shoot him, okay?"

This did not sound like an ideal plan to Rena. Rena did not have a gun. She had a giant club, a fear of blood, and splitting headache. Why couldn't gun-girl go after the stuck kid?

Then again, she wasn't really in a situation to negotiate, was she?

Nervously she made her way towards where the boys voice had come from.

"Where are you?" She paused.

What if this was a trap? What if he was going to kill her? What if they were both going to kill her?

Cautiously, she slipped the club out of her duffel, clutching it close to her chest. She knew, deep down, that she wouldn't use it. She wouldn't have the guts. But they didn't know that. They didn't know who she was at all.

After a second, she called again.

"Where are you? Who are you?" She decided it would be wisest if she didn't move until he said something back.

'Where are you?'

Alex slow breathing quickened slightly as the "Rena" girl entered carrying a huge club. Stupid name... where is the other bitch? Her effective range is at least a tenth of normal by her inexperience. Unless he had found a pistol shooting champion.

The girl plodded around aimlessly, his camouflage was perfect in this area. However, no camouflage can protect you from a gung-ho tree hater or the surprise of being discovered.

'Where are you? Who are you?'

She stopped, protected by the open space between the trees. He couldn't see the bitch with a gun and hoped she was still on the beach. If she flanked him and nudged him, the gun would discharge and probably kill him.

He wouldn't be forced on the back foot. Alex wanted them to expect a sniper or a gunman. Hopefully, fear would draw them together and he would disarm the bitch and run. And if that didn't work, the large stones at his feet offered him more possibility of survival than a caffeine high.

Still unable to see either of the other students, Ericka was getting fidgety. It was still possible that one or both of the others were setting a trap, and Ericka wasn't about to let herself get caught in a trap. If they were playing, then they probably didn't have guns, or at least didn't have a good shot, because then she would probably already be dead. Even if they didn't have guns they were still a threat, they could rush her, or... or... or who knew what. The only thing Ericka knew was that she had to get out of there.

While continuing to aim at the sound of the other voices, Ericka slowly bent over and picked up her bags. She took a few steps back and looked around for a way to escape.

There wasn't an answer. Rena paused, looking around again. She blinked for a moment, before deciding that standing here and doing nothing wasn't the smartest idea.

Had this been a trap?

She paused, looking around. If this kid had a gun, wouldn't he have shot her? Unless, of course he wanted to draw her out. Or trick her. Or maybe he was actually stuck?

She shook her head. These were kids she went to school with. These weren't people who'd she ever had imagined would be planning to kill her. Or people who'd she be planning to kill. She didn't want to think about this. She didn't want to hurt anyone.

But she didn't want to die either.

Slowly, she backed away, still facing where the voice had come from. The best idea would be to slip away into the forest and hopefully remain unseen. She didn't know these kids. She needed to find people she was sure she could trust.

Although, to be fair, she wasn't really sure she could trust anyone anymore.

((Understood, removing GM.))

Alex shuffled out of cover in silence and peeked through the trees. The girl with the gun was leaving... It had been a completely wasted effort. However, that club could come in handy.

I can't expose myself now, she'll shoot.

He turned to Rena, who was still facing away from him. He was silent and he prepared himself for a fight. He took one crouched step, then another, then another. The girl started backing towards him. He stopped and exposed his full height. She would step back into his restrictive embrace.

Don't turn around, that's it closer, closer... got'cha

His right hand would grab the club. His left hand would shut her up. Alex gulped and prepared himself. He looked over his shoulder, hoping steel sights were not trained on his torso or head. Alex wanted to shut his eyes and hide again, but it was too late. He had committed himself to attacking Rena. A woman. Alex had never hit a woman in his life.

I am not dying here!

Hey, Syph, just a friendly reminder from the mod team to avoid God-Modding (GMing). GMing includes callings shots, which counts things like grabbing another character. You can declare the attempt, but unless you have permission from the other handler, not the success. If you do have permission, please remember to post something to the tune of "GMing approved".

Thanks!

Ericka soon realized that escape options were far fewer than she previously thought. The tide appeared to be coming in, making the beach to her right almost non-existent. The beach to the left was wider, but it soon turned a corner making it's safety an unknown. She certainly wasn't going to go through where the boy's voice came from, and the woods to the front-right seemed to be thick enough to slow down her escape.

Ericka grimaced, although she might be wrong about it, there appeared to be only one way that was clear enough that she could mount her escape. Right in front of her, where Rena's voice had come from.

Only occasionally dropping her guard out of necessity, Ericka knelt down and reached into her bags. Since it would be cumbersome to carry both bags, she stuffed the contents of the day pack into her duffel bag, with the exception of one clip of ammunition, which she tucked into her right sleeve in case she needed to quickly reload. She also put her glasses into their case before zipping up her duffel bag. When she was finished she lifted her bag up on her left side and pulled the strap over her head, hanging in off her right shoulder.

Returning her aim to her front, fear and nervousness nearly overwhelmed her, but she knew she had to work through it. While Survival of the Fittest truly was a scenario to be feared, if she let fear paralyze her she wasn't likely to last to the end of the day. Ericka took a deep breath, to calm and ready her mind, before walking confidently through the tall grass into the woods.

Rena was not a very instinctive person. She probably should have heard the noise behind her. She probably should have sense that there was something there. But she didn't, instead she backed straight into something. Something rather hard. And person sized.

Her eyes slowly faced the person she had just backed straight into.

Of course. She had tried to back out of a trap, and ended up backing straight into one.

She wondered if this boy would be willing to kill her. She wondered why he had been hiding, why he had set this trap. She wondered why she seemed the have the worst of luck when it came to meeting new people.

Rena didn't know whether or not she should scream. The only other person around wasn't someone she knew she could trust, and that girl had a gun. She couldn't see her captors weapon. He'd hidden it somewhere. Maybe she'd chosen the lesser of two evils?

Her thoughts were interrupted when the owner of the other voice (at least she assumed) barged into the scene.

Well, that was awkward.

Rena thought immediately that this could easily devolve into a violent situation, so she instead decided to try and stop it before it started.

"Wait! Wait. Everyone stop. Let's not get this out of...out of hand." Rena gulped. There was a large chance one of them was just going to kill her, and she did not particularly like that plan. "You both know I'm Rena...so who are you?"

Rena backed straight into him and Alex's hesitation had destroyed his attempt at restraining her. She had turned to face him, and looked very calm. The club hovered by her side, without a hint of aggression. Rena was good at hiding her fear. Very good, in fact.

She fired a quick glance past him.

'Wait! Wait. Everyone stop. Let's not get this out of...out of hand.' she gulped. 'You both know I'm Rena...so who are you?'

Alex froze and panic flashed on his face. The rims of his glasses wouldn't hide the expression of terror on his face.

Oh god, she isn't behind me, is she?

Alex had to lunge for the club. If the girl with the gun was behind him, he was dead anyway. He would choose his moment wisely. Alex could not make a mistake this time.

'My name is... Alex...' a quick glance over his shoulder revealed no-one. '...Alex Seymo...'

He launched himself at the club hoping to rip it from her grasp, if Rena had a tight grip or quick reactions he would be on his knees at her mercy. It was last chance saloon.

When Ericka emerged from the grass she realized that she made a huge mistake, the others were much closer than she had thought. Although the person who she had considered the bigger threat had his back turned, and neither he nor Rena appeared to have guns, Ericka still felt herself frozen with panic.

"Wait! Wait. Everyone stop. Let's not get this out of...out of hand." She heard Rena say, "You both know I'm Rena...so who are you?"

Ericka didn't know how to respond. Rena didn't need their names, she was just trying to defuse a tense situation. Ericka was well aware of that, it was the only reason to ask that question, but Ericka was only getting more tense. The only way she'd be less tense would be if the others left.

The boy began to answer Rena's question, his name was Alex. Ericka almost felt like Rena's attempt to make peace had worked, but then Alex lunged at the other girl. Ericka pointed her gun in the direction of the others, filled with fear over what might happen next.

Alex lunged, and Rena frantically ducked out of the way.

Well that hadn't worked. She spun, trying to face the boy who had just attacked her. Had he been slightly to the side, she might have seen the other girl enter the scene. But she didn't, as Alex was in her way. Rena felt like cursing, beads of sweat growing on her neck.

This wasn't going to end well.

"Please, just wait. I don't want to hurt you, I don't want to hurt anybody. We don't have to act this way." In truth, Rena knew that her options were limited. If the boy wanted to fight, she would lose. She could try to run, but she had a feeling he'd catch her, and she didn't know her way around wherever they were to trust running around blindly in it. Her only hope was that this boy didn't want to kill her. That he would listen, that he wouldn't hurt her.

But she doubted that he was going to do anything nice. She was beginning to think that this was only going to end with her death.

Quietly, near a whisper, she found herself begging the boy, Alex. "Please."
