The woman driving the car gave Simon a warm smile and shock his hand. She then turned to her son, and asked "What happened to your phone, son?"

"Um I uh dropped it in a puddle. Stupid I know but it should be fine if I can stick it under a radiator or something. I’ll be more careful in future." Trevor nervously stated the story Simon had suggested in the first place. Though Simon nodded his head in agreement, Trina did not seem to buy it at all. She raised her eyebrow incredulously before turning back to Simon and asking him where he was going.

"5425 Bluebird Drive. It's actually pretty close." He added the second statement, even though this woman didn't seem to be the sort of person who would mind going a little bit out of her way for another person. She's definitely Trevor's parent all right. "It's sort of yellowish, with a stone lantern outside. Can't miss it."

Suddenly, the car swerved to narrowly avoid a large Hummer. Simon grabbed onto the side door reflexively, backing himself against the back of the car. "Some people." He muttered under his breathe. "Have absolutely no idea how function properly." The driver had clearly cut them off; did he have any idea how much damage a vehicle that large could do in a collision?

Simon turned back to Trina and Trevor at the front of the car. "Uh, thank you guys so much for taking me home. 'Probably would have drowned out there." The rain spattering against the car was still going strong, creating an increasingly loud ruckus.

‘It’s no bother’ Trevor and Trina said in unison which caused Trina to laugh and Trevor to groan. The heavy thuds of the raindrops were unrelenting and Trevor was once again happy that they’d got out of the rain, or like Simon had said they probably would’ve drowned by now. Trevor was envisioning a warm mug of tea and a spot by the fire. Sometimes he felt like such an old man.

The car turned into Bluebird Drive and Trevor scanned the houses for the number they needed. They needed 5425, but they’d managed to turn into the end that began in the lower thousands. ‘Soon be there Simon, gotta prep you for the door. It sticks a bit so don’t be afraid to shove it hard if you have to and don’t worry about the locking bit of it, easier if we do it from inside.’ Trevor was used to explaining how to work the ancient car to people, and the instructions rolled off his tongue with practised ease.

The drive up the street didn’t take long and soon they were pulling up outside Simon’s house, which they recognised by the yellow tint and some funny looking stone lantern outside. ‘Here you go man, and thanks for having that umbrella before, I defiantly need to get one of those for myself. Remember what I said about the door, go on kick it if you have to the car can take it.’
I'm not as awesome as this song makes out
I'm angry, underweight and sketching out
I'm building bonfires on my vanities and doubts
To get warm just like everybody else

The car continued driving though the rain, which now was beginning to sound like it was so heavy that being in it would actually hurt. Simon shivered, the thin hairs on his arm standing up straight from their long tenure in the cold. But he'd be home soon; that was all that mattered. At home there was a nice fireplace and comfy chair just waiting for him to sit down and enjoy a book.

Trevor explained the car to him, stating that shoving and kicking the door were good ideas if necessary. Simon nodded. "You got it." He responded, before glancing out of the window. They were driving down Bluebird lance, approaching his house. Simon recognized it at first glance: there were the plants hanging out of his parents' window, the stone lantern he'd bought two years ago, the familiar plank on the wall. It was a modest sized house-equally good for a newlywed couple or an average family of four-that was a sensible choice for Simon's frugal doctor father. He had lived in it all his life, making him the only one in the family who had never moved.

As the car stopped, Simon saw the front door open. His sister younger sister, Jessica, stood in the doorway for a moment before disappearing in a flash of red fabric and black hair. Simon attempted to open the door, which failed to budge. He recalled Trevor's advice and started yanking it, to no avail. As a last idea, he pressed his foot up against the door, which caused it to swing open and offset his balance. Simon went a little red in the face that this display, but he managed to put on a confidant grin.

“You weren’t kidding.” Simon laughed. “Thanks again for the ride. See you at school, Trevor.”
