William walked quickly through the empty quad, wondering just how late he was. Sure he should have gone to class when he heard the bell, but Mrs. Bishop was always late. It would be a waste of a good three minutes to be standing outside the classroom waiting for her to arrive. Well, he thought it had been three minutes, but bleakness of the silent quad was suggesting it was somewhat later. He scampered along a bench, arms outstretched for balance, coat fluttering behind him in a way he knew, deep down, wasn’t as cool as he’d like to imagine. Still no need to run, the class might still be waiting for her. As the classroom came into view he realised this wasn’t true. No students outside; he most definitely late. Cursing under his breath Will hastened his stride. He ran the last few steps to the door, and faked breathlessness as he entered. ‘If you’re late, pretend to be panting,’ best advice he’d ever received, teachers are a lot more forgiving if they think you ran to class. ‘Sorry Miss, it won’t happen again.’ He slipped into the closest seat, next to that little German girl, what was her name, Raine, Rhine, something like that, Will could never remember peoples’ names anyway. Pulling his books out of his bag he saw his strategy had worked, Ms Bishop couldn’t get angry with him if he looked so apologetic. Knowing he was safe from trouble he settled down, English was amongst his favourite classes, now he could relax |

Raine watched curiously from her seat as the estranged student panted as he ran in. The first thing she noticed was his lack of sweat that he should have shown if he had ran all the way to the class to escape being late. He seemed too calm right now for his heart to have been racing. Will, she remembered, was not on any sports team. Or was he? Raine couldn't remember. She couldn't even remember what she had done that morning. She sat there in her seat, elbows on the table and her chin resting in her hands. Her dark blond hair was worn in pigtails that day, tied high on her head and hanging down to her shoulders. Her sweater was a white cotton and it easily looked baggy, too many sizes too big. Her denim miniskirt was barely visible due to the shirt and her socks were worn high up to her knees black. Glancing over to Will as he sat down, she wrote something down on a piece of paper. When Mrs. Bishop wasn't looking, she passed the note over to him. It read: Shakespeare Hamlet, we're looking at the 'To Be or not to Be' sililoquy |

Will looked at the note and turned to the relevant page. Nice of her to help, he’d been expecting to have to figure it out instead. Hmmm, it wasn’t his favourite part of the book but he would have had to be foolish to expect them not to study it. He’d only missed the dramatic reading, so far, so good. ‘To be or not to be?’ Gee, what a whiner, Hamlet was about so much angst. Will started scribbling in the margin. ‘William, why don’t you explain to the class what this soliloquy is about, in simple terms?’ What! Damn, and just when he thought he’d got away with it. Mrs Bishop had to be doing this because he was late. He’d relaxed too soon. ‘Well, basically he’s talking about suicide. He complains about how tough his life is and considers killing himself. He also suggests that it’s cowardly to fear death.’ ‘And do you think he’s unjustified in this belief?’ ‘Well, I mean, he does have problems, like his dad’s dead and his uncle is taking over, but I think he’s taking it a bit far. He’s got a girlfriend, he has friends, and, well, he’s a prince. It’s not like he’s in too bad a situation. There’s no reason for him to even be thinking about suicide.’ Mrs Bishop seemed to be appeased by this answer, and went on teaching the class. Will returned to his drawing. A little figure wearing all black, with black hair covering his face, a speech bubble enclosing the phrase “woe is me.” On the figure’s head was a little crown. Will muttered to himself: ‘Prince Hamlet: Royal Emo.’ |

Raine smiled in relief, pleased that her rescue efforts were not in vain. When Will described his reasoning that Hamlet was not justified in suicide, she half-wiondered herself why she didn't understand that point of view. Hamlet did have a girlfriend, he had a best friend in Horatio and he was trusted by his court. The one thing that caught the young girl's mind was the relationship between Hamlet and his father. They must have had a pretty good relationship for Hamlet to seek vengeance like a bloodhound hunting a scent. Raine never felt that close to either of her parents, envying Hamlet. She blew a sigh before chewing on the end of her pen. Raine glanced over to Will, noticing he was concentrating on something and it wasn't their English class. Spotting the picture of Hamlet and the word bubble, Raine tried to suppress a giggle. She covered her mouth in vain but a small muffled giggle did escape. |

Will saw the girl next to lean to look at his scribble and let out a little giggle. This cheered Will up a bit. Her appraisal would seem to be positive. He always felt happy when people found him funny. It was as if by laughing she was affirming his worth. What else funny could he do? Whoops, better to keep himself under control. He always pushed things a bit too far. Better to just leave it at that. Will took a gasp as he realised Ms Bishop was coming over. It seemed he wasn't the only one who'd heard the girl's giggle. Will hurried to get his work in order, to make it seem as if he was doing something, but Ms Bishop was already looking at his book. She let out a low hum of disapproval, she was a Hamlet fan no matter what students might say about it. Thankfully she wasn't a spiteful teacher, and would let her students quietly make fun of the Danish prince without punishment, as long as they did so quietly. Will relaxed again as she walked away. Three scares in one period? It wasn't a record but he still was thankful he hadn't got into trouble. With a moment’s hesitation he relaxed again |

Raine held her breath as Mrs. Bishop walked over to them. When the teacher didn't do anything and turned around, she let her forehead rest on the cool desk and exhaled in relief. A smile formed at the corner of her mouth and she glanced over to Will. Usually Raine would want to stay on the good side of the teachers but for some reason, Raine felt excited about escaping detention for giggling in class. She then pulled out a piece of paper and scribbled something else there. Will seemed to be intriguing and Raine was looking for more friends. Like a cat curious about a trinket, she passed the note over to Will when Mrs. Bishop wasn't looking. My name is Raine. Your sketch was very funny and I like it. She didn't like how short her note was, but she didn't know what else to say. Raine hoped she didn't sound strange. Glancing over, she gave him a cheerful but shy smile. |

Will quickly read the note. Normally he’d be shy in this situation, but the girl was being so friendly that he felt at ease. Plus a note would allow him to think about what he was saying. That was a lot better than being surprised with a conversation. So, her name was Raine, his memory had been right after all. She probably already knew his name. Lots of people he didn’t remember knew his name, which could be embarrassing at times. Never the less, he decided to introduce himself anyway. There wouldn’t be any point handing it back to her without saying anything, perhaps he should ask her about opinions on the play. No, he didn’t want to bore her with class work. Perhaps he should talk about drawing, that was the topic they were already on. He looked at the note realised he’d added both. Bugger. Thanks, I’m Will, how are you finding Hamlet? Do you draw? He considered scribbling it out and starting again, but he just rolled it up and passed it to her. She could choose. Damn, and he’d thought this would be easier than talking. |

Raine could tell that Will was feeling a little shy. As she wrote down her response, Raine smiled to show that she was completely open and was not someone to be feared. Did she like to draw? It was a pastime she enjoyed, not too much to be a hobby but it was an interest to her. I find Hamlet to be a bit depressing. As for drawing, I like to take pictures with my camera and then recreate them in a painting. Once she finished the note, she passed it back over to him. Glancing over, Raine looked at him. Will looked like an all right guy. Raine had admired him before for his quick wit and replies to the teachers. |

Will glanced over at Raine, and saw she was smiling friendlily at him. He flashed a quick smile back and read the note. He scribbled a quick reply. Wow, painting! What kind of things? Landscapes? That sounds cool. All my drawings are pretty unrealistic. He checked the note again,he had tried to write cheerfuly, like the words sounded in his head, but it came out as merely messy on paper. He passed her the note |
