A young Melissa Li pressed her hands on the notes, her heart beating rapidly in her chest as she played a simplified version of Tchaikovsky's 1812 Overture to the grand audience of thirty mothers and fathers. At the age of ten, she was already performing in her third piano recital at a local school and to her, these things never got easier. She couldn't get their gazes out of her mind. They were staring at her. Staring. Judging. Waiting for that one mistake that would suddenly leap out, breaking the melody of the song and leave her scrambling to make up for it. She turned to face her audience...and there they were. Through Some people congratulated her while others looked at her with some pity. Why would they need to pity her? Her performance was fantastic and her parents were there to experience every note. She said her farewells to her friends before leaving and rejoining her parents outside their car. She briefly wondered why they weren't staying to listen to the other kids, but she didn't want to interrupt the silence that had surrounded the car. That night, she went into her room and |
