| Welcome to Survival of the Fittest, a RPing board loosely based off of Koshun Takami's Battle Royale, with its own unique plot and spin on the 'deadly game'. We've been around quite a while, and are now in our thirteenth year, so don't worry about us going anywhere any time soon! If you're a newcomer and interested in joining, then please make sure you check out the rules. You may also want to read the FAQ, introduce yourself and stop by the chat to meet some of our members. If you're still not quite sure where to start, then we have a great New Member's Guide with a lot of useful information about getting going. Don't hesitate to PM a member of staff (they have purple usernames) if you have any questions about SOTF and how to get started! Let the games begin! |

Okay, looking over the BK and BD awards it's pretty clear what the opinions of most people are - several of the deaths thusfar have been to get a kill-count/a better weapon and all that jazz, and I know I appear to be really guilty of that, so I wanted to clarify something. Obviously when a character who is most definitely my flagship kills one of the others in their first thread and takes their gun it's going to look like it - what else will it look like? Thing is though, I was gonna off Tyson from the beginning, and it's for the same reason his death scene wasn't good: I didn't care about him, and couldn't rp as him. It's a bad thing to say as the handler I know, considering I made him in the first place, and maybe I shoulda just thrown his rights up for grabs. But hey, I didn't, though that might've been the best option. As for wanting a kill count... okay, guilty, I did, fact remains though, I would've done it whether Tyson had a gun or a stuffed toy. ... Alright, that was random, just needed to get it off my chest. You can lay into me verbally now if you want. |

One thing about BKA/BDA voting... don't take it too seriously.
I'll let you in on a little secret in regards to that contest. It's very hard to come up with a specific reason to vote for a specific roleplay, other than "It was well-written", and if people don't give a good enough reason (for example, it states specifically in the rules not to say something like "I just really like the character"), I won't count the vote, because I try not to make the contests about popularity. So, basically, the easiest way to cast your vote and give good reasoning behind it is to compare that death to the other ones and tell why it stands out.Like with this round in particular, we had nine kills. Lance killed Heather, Melina killed Lance, Blood Boy fried Josh, Eduardo killed Tanya, Bobby, of course, killed Tyson, RePeate finished off Alex himself, Riser offed Tegan herself, Ivye finished off Charlie, and Gabriel killed Jason. Of those nine deaths we've had on the first day, seven of them were self-kills. It's not that we condone self-kills here or anything (though I'll be the first to say they DO get really old after a while), but of the seven self-kills, approximately half of the handlers had their other character pick up their victim's weapon. I think really, a lot of the SOTF "vets" were the ones who brought that up in their reasoning for voting for certain people, but you know what? We're all old-school. Haha. Back in SOTF V1, we weren't allowed to pick up our own characters' weapons. I've since edited the rules to say that it's possible, and really, we haven't had all that many problems with it. It's just funny how in about half the deaths during this month, people have graverobbed their own characters. So that, specifically, is where people are getting that from. As for "killing off characters to increase their own kill count"... I'm gonna be really honest with you here, I completely agree that we saw a LOT of that during the first month. Aside from the rolled kills, all but maybe one or two deaths were kills done in an opening post (Heather/Tyson/Josh/Jason). There's nothing really wrong with self-kills, like I said. The difference between getting "Wow, that's a great post," and being told "You just killed that character because you wanted to increase your kill count," evolves around one thing. How it was written. I was pretty vicious in my vote, I know, because I'm very nitpicky about this stuff. As I explicitly stated there, when you write a post in which your character comes into an area and basically decimates your other character without having them so much as fight back, it's gonna look like you killed them for their weapon or to up your kill count. But you know something? It doesn't have to be that way. Nobody's accused me of killing Heather off just to increase Lance's kill count. In fact, I've got nothing but compliments on that death. If you're really that concerned about other peoples' opinions, though, the best advice I can give you for killing off your own characters is to put just as much into one character as you do the other. Roleplays are a lot better to read when there's a struggle involved instead of your character's victim simply going "Blah! You have got me, I am dead!". I understand in your specific situation that you were having trouble writing the character, and that's not an uncommon thing here on the forum. But, I just want you to be able to understand where everyone who voted that way was formulating that opinion. Like I said, I was one of 'em. Even if you don't care about a character, if you're actively trying to win an award for their death, you want it to be good. And you know, that doesn't mean it has to be six pages long and full of blood and gore. Riser's death post with Tegan was relatively short and the girl committed suicide, but people are still voting it as one of the best deaths of the month, simply because she engaged the readers in her post and made them feel for Tegan before she hurled herself off the cliff. On the other hand, if you're not actively trying to win the contest and it's just a fodder death, then, to be honest, it really doesn't matter. We need characters to be foddered out just as much as we need epic deaths. If every death was epic, well, we'd have another case like in V2 where everybody was trying to be the main focal point of attention all at once, which was, in a word, annoying. So yeah, to conclude, I just wanted to show you, specifically, how people were coming to that conclusion about the majority of the deaths this round. A lot of the newer members seem to be taking it way too personally, and my advice to you is, well, don't. We try not to make the BKA and BDA awards popularity contests, because we have way too much of that here, and because of that, people are very, bluntly honest in their votes. It shouldn't offend you, rather, if you feel like you're one of the people that fall into the category, simply take it as some constructive criticism. Really, that's all it is anyway. |
