| Welcome to Survival of the Fittest, a RPing board loosely based off of Koshun Takami's Battle Royale, with its own unique plot and spin on the 'deadly game'. We've been around quite a while, and are now in our thirteenth year, so don't worry about us going anywhere any time soon! If you're a newcomer and interested in joining, then please make sure you check out the rules. You may also want to read the FAQ, introduce yourself and stop by the chat to meet some of our members. If you're still not quite sure where to start, then we have a great New Member's Guide with a lot of useful information about getting going. Don't hesitate to PM a member of staff (they have purple usernames) if you have any questions about SOTF and how to get started! Let the games begin! |

I think that a bit of Sue is alright in an RPG. I tend to play characters that I feel a personal connection to, and it makes the experience much more fulfilling in my opinion. |

Hm. I can see where you're coming from: but a character doesn't have to be a Sue for you to feel a connection with them. Depends if the Sue is unrealistic by profile, or Suetastic by roleplay. First one is forgiveable...ish, the second is annoying. |

Having a "perfect" character isn't alright by any writing standards. It's something that's... rather childish, really, and is just a form of wish fulfillment. Not that there's anything wrong with that, it just doesn't belong in a roleplay. Of course, I'm referring to someone who "is the best looking person in their class", "is the smartest person in the entire United States of America", "is loved by EVERYONE in the entire world", "is caring and compassionate yet completely devoid of any and all emotion and has no problem killing anything that moves on sight", and "his or her only weakness is being struck by lightning". Someone like that is, by definition, a Sue. I don't really like these Litmus tests because they really don't pertain to SOTF and they don't translate over all that well. I see characters that I'd easily define as a Sue that score way low on this test, and others that are particularly well-written that score high. Really, SOTF runs off of different standards than most of these litmus tests. Really, things we don't like to see here are as follows. 1.) Pre-made murderers. I'm going to scrutinize the heck out of your profile if your character has committed a murder in the past, and I'm going to make you fix every little detail that could possibly be wrong with it, because I very seriously dislike this. 2.) Characters who are incredibly proficient with firearms despite the fact that they aren't old enough to even own a gun. In the U.S., you have to be 21 years of age to purchase a gun. That's not to say that your character absolutely wouldn't have access to them. I at least had basic knowledge of how to unflick the safety, point, and shoot when I was about fourteen. But, your character probably isn't going to be the end-all, be-all of firearms at 17. 3.) "Perfect" characters. This bugs me, and most of the rest of the forum as well. SOTF is a roleplay that's based on reality, and as we all know, real people have flaws and aren't 100% perfect 100% of the time. It seems to be a lot easier to say your character is good at everything than to mention something they're bad at, though. Fortunately, we don't see much of this. We DO get several characters who are overly attractive in appearance, but that doesn't really bother anybody unless the roster is filled to the brim with them. 4. Stone cold psychopaths. To put it simply, if someone is completely and totally deranged or crazy prior to the game, odds are, they aren't going to be in a public high school. The staff will definitely call somebody on this unless they write it out really well and explain in detail how the character manages to control their outbreaks and stuff. Honestly, it's better to just avoid this and make a normal kid. It's a lot more fun to write people out as they degrade instead of making them a psycho from the get-go. 5. BR Clones. To be honest, we've had our fair share of these, but it's hard to make a respectable character when they're just a clone or ripoff of another character. Of course, Mitsuko and Kazuo are by far the most readily "cloned" characters, and we've had our fair share of both. Personally, we don't have a problem with you lightly basing a character off of another one, but don't out and out copy their entire personality and past. |

Nah, we worked yours out to where it was believable and realistic, and that's really my main qualm with the murdering thing. I don't know too many people (in fact, I don't know any) who've killed someone in cold blood, left a bunch of evidence at the scene of the crime 'cause they were young and naive, and gotten away with it. Legally, death in a boxing match isn't considered murder. |

Traits of self-insert characters are considered to be Sueish, according to that test. This explains Adam Dodd's high score, and Bradley Armstrong's 41. But this is I Wanna Be The Guy... I mean, Survival of the Fittiest. Self-inserts and based-on-real-peoples aren't really frowned upon here, as far as I can tell. If anything, they're more realistic than the other ones.

Mortimer: 29 Mostly cuz I like the name, and there is a bit of romanticized self insertion. Injun Joe: 12 Mostly cuz his advantages are overall, not that great. I tend to see Sues more in how the character is written than in what the character's traits are. It's kind of why people have a hard time with Superman as a character, since he's kinda perfect except for the kryptonite thing. As far as I can tell, the easiest way to make Superman work as a character is to ignore most of what he can do. And make him STUPID, like a one two and half legged sieve for a fishbowl. Superman, when used intelligently, makes people cry "MARTY STU!" OTOH Look at Marvelman, a literally perfect being in almost every sense, and managed to create a very compelling character. Or Sandman. Or Swamp Thing. Or Dr.Manhattan. There's a ton of effectively omnipotent, characters, who if you had them take the Test, would be complete Mary Sues. The reason this pertains to Battle Royale is that, it isn't the background so much as how the character is played out in the plot. Since none of us have characters of that magnitude, we have a lot more leeway in how we portray our characters. edit for character scores Marvelman Post Golden Age, during Neil Gaiman's run on the comic: 74 Swamp Thing, from Alan Moore's run to the end of the series: 69 Dr.Manhattan: 54 brought down by having a crazy personality flaw of having no empathy what so ever. |
