"Maybe." Jae left it there for now, focusing on finishing up with the money and arranging it back in the register. With that done, he ducked down to restock the candy display.

He was back to clinking his tongue stud against his teeth, thinking. Where did he want to go, even if he did decide to leave? When they'd first moved to Kingman, he'd been adamant that he'd go back to California as soon as he had the chance. Maybe he still wanted to do that, but was there really any reason for him to go back besides nostalgia? He didn't know anyone who lived there. He didn't have a job lined up anywhere in the area and his savings certainly weren't going to be getting him a studio apartment in LA or anything.

He really ought to try harder at getting his head around the idea of commissions. Figure out what it was about them that really turned him off and then work on getting over it. It might have been just another control thing, not wanting anyone else to tell him how to create. On the other hand, money. On the other other hand, college, but he had pretty much zero desire to spend at least four more years of his life in school just so people could mock him for getting an art degree.

Jae sat back on his heels and sighed. "It feels like there's not enough time now," he mumbled, just loud enough for Jane to hear.
"Art enriches the community, Steve, no less than a pulsing fire hose, or a fireman beating down a blazing door. So what if we're drawing a nude man? So what if all we ever draw is a nude man, or the same nude man over and over in all sorts of provocative positions? Context, not content! Process, not subject! Don't be so gauche, Steve, it's beneath you."
