"I don't know if I'm going to go."

There weren't many people that Jae had actually told. Jane certainly wouldn't have been one of his confidants, but he'd gone and started the conversation so it was too late to dodge the question now. His parents seemed to understand, for the most part, and were even supportive of his suggestion that he take about a year's break to work and maybe travel if he could save up the money. Dad had offered to help him look into setting up a portfolio for online commissions if he felt so inclined, but Jae just couldn't make himself embrace the idea of selling his work to faceless strangers. He'd given sketches as gifts on occasion, and of course the work he did in Mrs. Liberman's class was displayed with his classmates', but selling it felt like giving away something personal and not getting anything meaningful in return. It was like auctioning off his kids, or something.

Even with his parents' generally supportive attitude, Jae thought that they probably expected it to be temporary. He'd take a year, get the jitters out, and then settle down and do... whatever it was they expected him to do. Graphic design in advertising, or go and sell his soul to Disney or some shit.

"It's stupid. Nobody gives a fuck until this year, and then they're all on your case about it and if you don't know or you don't want to go, they act like you'll be stuck in fucking Kingman for the rest of your life working at McDonald's."

"Art enriches the community, Steve, no less than a pulsing fire hose, or a fireman beating down a blazing door. So what if we're drawing a nude man? So what if all we ever draw is a nude man, or the same nude man over and over in all sorts of provocative positions? Context, not content! Process, not subject! Don't be so gauche, Steve, it's beneath you."
