V4 Read-A-Thon: The Reboot
Finished with Hilary.

So Hilary surprised me. I wasn't expecting a lot out of her story, and to be honest, I didn't get a lot in terms of major events. There was no huge action or climactic scenes, just her running from place to place 'till she finds Brock dead, finds Leila and is euthanized by Leila in a oneshot.

HOWEVER. Hilary had something great going for her, namely, she was very well written. Her prose was fantastic; it wasn't crowded or padded, but it felt rich in detail and eloquent and was lovely to read. Her death scene was also exceptional, a very emotional event to end her on. She's very short, but I think what little she actually gets the chance to do was, if not exciting, very well-written.

If there's any characters available I'll take 'em.

Gonna read Hilary hopefully soon!

Honestly, my initial impression on scum reads would be Naft. He seems particularly willing to jump onto people for things and accusing them, and that reads as suspicious. It's a scum tactic he's used before as well, so my eyes are on him. I don't have any other big scum reads just yet, RC might be a little iffy but that's probably from relative inexperience. Town reads so far include Vyse, who seems to have a good grasp of the situation thus far and had decent overall reads.

I think Naft targeting me is following his tactic of go after a random person and get them lynched, which iirc he's done before as scum. Ergo, I'm skeptical of his line of questioning, which seemed pretty flimsy given his sureness despite there being really no evidence.

If serious, though: preliminary statement of attempts on Decoy and dmboogie seem cautiously acceptable, but only in lieu of other suspects.

I think I'm the only person who's cast a stinkeye on those two for now, and I wouldn't call it an attempt. I just know their style as skating through to the next round based on being quiet and would like to avoid it.

MW: Why has Yugi moved down based on that?

Grim: Who's standing out to you right now?

Espi: You're definitely mafia.

What is your logic behind this, if I may ask?

It wasn't an attempt to appear to contribute, at the time I wanted to bring attention to something I thought seemed suspicious, since that's usually the goal this early in the game.

Update; Will is drawn, but I can't upload him just yet. I'd definitely like to get a few more requests though!

You've seen this debate a couple of times before. Why so hesitant to add your own thoughts?
I wasn't sure what to make of it. It caught me by surprise and I wanted to hear other people's thoughts before jumping to conclusions, since there are so many reasons it could be true or false.

Of course, the joke part of it kind of flew over my head ><

Well that's a Miller claim right out of the gate. Not sure how that should be considered, but there we go.

Requesting another prompt!

Alice Baker: A shy but intelligent girl, Alice's big sister Molly used to pick on her and boss her around a lot in their youth. As Alice grew older, she became artistically inclined, writing songs, drawing and playing violin. She has a blog which she uses to post her creations, as well as to write fanfictions for her favorite books. She's somewhat quiet, but very intelligent, with a sharp sense of humor.

NOTE: I did experiment a lot with the style to improve the overall quality. I can make more chibi-style drawings if you'd prefer, but this is a more well-proportioned picture in my opinion.

I apologize for Oskar's huge arms.

I've been on a bit of a drawing kick lately. I'm not fantastic, but I've been having fun. I figured that, people like their stuff being drawn, and I like drawing, so why not combine the two and make a request thread?

For now, I'll limit myself to SOTF characters or concepts, but you can request any of your own kids. If they have a profile, link it, and if not, write up a quick description.

Here's a sample of something I've drawn before. These are my V6 concepts:

It's just a quick pencil sketch colored with crayon, so expect about that kind of quality if you make a request. Sorry.

I'll take 5 for now before closing up the queue. Have at it!

V6 Concept Flash Prompts
The snow crunched under the 11-year old boy’s boots as he trotted deeper into the frigid woodlands. He was heavily bundled up; a large black woolen hat had been shoved over a mop of his hair, still red back then. A thick winter coat was draped over his shoulders, and his hands were wrapped in heavy mittens, which made carrying his camera difficult.

Henry Spencer was on a mission; a mission, like that show Mission: Impossible, except hopefully his mission was possible. Probably. Hopefully. He’d spent the morning on the computer, looking up places where Bigfoot had been spotted. He learned Bigfoot was found in this area a few times; well, close enough. Ohio had a fair amount of Bigfoot sightings compared to other states nearby like Indiana and Michigan so he figured, he lived in Ohio, why not try to find Bigfoot? He’d be famous and it’d be really cool, so he might as well try.

Unfortunately, the weather disagreed. It was really, really, really cold, and the snow was sticky and clumpy and clung to his boots. But it wasn’t too windy, and it was sunny despite the trees, so Henry kept trudging deeper and deeper into the forest. His backyard was almost out of sight, so surely something must be lurking here so far from his house! He picked up the pace a bit, trying to make it far enough fast enough to find something.

It’d been about ten minutes of walking and Henry was freezing cold. He wanted to go back home and make hot chocolate, but dang it, Bigfoot was more important! He shivered as he kept going, when he spotted something dark lying in the snow in the distance.

That had to be it! Excited, he began to rush towards the form in the snow, approaching the shape eagerly. As he stood over the figure, he suddenly realized that the figure’s form had been distorted; the body in the snow wasn’t brown, but dark crimson, just like the spreading pool of scarlet surrounding his form, his face stretched in a mask of terror as he clutched the still-dripping knife embedded in his gut.

“Henry?”

“Yes, Ms. Jennings?” Henry looked over to the teacher’s desk with a smile, where a dark-haired woman in her 30s was sitting with a concerned look on her face. “You…do know this was supposed to be a story about something that actually happened in your life, right?”

“Yes, ma’am.” 11-year old Henry grinned with a sort of naïve innocence.

“And…you didn’t actually find a body in the woods, did you?”

No, ma’am.”

Ms. Jennings tried to conceal her sigh of relief as she adjusted her glasses. “Then how come you wrote this piece?”

“Well, I was going to write about the time I watched a really scary movie really late at night and couldn’t sleep, but that was boring, so I wrote about what could’ve happened to me if I was in the movie. Turns out, the body was this guy who killed himself, but then his angry ghost comes back and chases me into the woods, but then I-“

“That’s enough, Henry. Thank you very much.” Ms. Jennings was clearly trying to smile but it didn’t look quite right. “Alright, next up?” A blonde girl with pigtails eagerly raised her hand and was called up, where she began telling the class about the first time she’d ridden a horse.

Henry returned to his seat, blissfully unaware of the mutters from his classmates. He was proud of his story; it was way cooler and scarier than anyone else’s. It was too bad nobody wanted to hear the ending; he’d been proud of it.

Challenges for V6
I'll take a challenge, just to see if it gives me ideas.

V6 Concept Flash Prompts
Ooh, this sounds fun. Sign me up!

Henry Spencer: Henry was always an odd boy. His mom died of preeclampsia shortly after his birth, and his father gradually became reclusive and withdrawn afterwards. Henry was diagnosed with Asperger Syndrome in his youth; while unfailingly cheerful and optimistic, he tends to be a motormouth and go on endlessly about things only he's interested in. This and his bluntness makes him fairly unpopular and an easy target, though he has thick skin and isn't easily messed with. Henry's a good student, and is interested in cryptozoology, conspiracy theories, horror media and trivia.

V5 Endgame Plastic Hammers

The Plastic Hammer Awards!

The Basics

Handler Name: Espi

Your Trademark Character: Probably Theo

Current Status of Trademark Character: Dead from a terminal case of poor choices and a wrench to the head.

Favorite Character: Hansel Williams, Mara Montalvo, Maddie Wilcox, Alda Abbate and Summer Simms. If we double up, then count Michelle Wexler and Sara Corlett too.

Favorite Weapon: In terms of use, the FAMAS and exploding cigar. For funny, I liked the iPod from hell, the Rotato and the penis enhancement pump, especially with Abby's conclusion for the latter two. I also like the riot shield even though it wasn't really used 'cause I'm weird.

Favorite Scene: Bella finally snapping was a fun scene, as was

Favorite Death: Casey Malkovitch's death was really good. So were Maddie Wilcox's, KK Konipaski's and Paris Ardennes'. Also props for Tessa Blackridge’s and David Zimmer’s for being funny and credit to staff for Phoebe Cho’s inactive death which I really enjoyed.

Favorite Quote: There’s a lot I liked, so I can’t really decide.

Favorite Post: Again, I can never decide these things >_>

Favorite Location: Nuclear plant was clever as an island theme. I enjoyed the happenings of the hospital as well.

Characters

Best Character Development: Paris Ardennes’ ambiguous motives were interesting. Bella’s descent was great, as was Sean Mulcahy and Hansel Williams’ and Summer Simms’ turning to villainy.

Best Game Impact: I think Summer demonstrated a new way to write a crazy killer which was very effective. V5 overall had good villains in general; Mara, KK Konipaski and Hansel did well at showing how to write a good player.

Best Innovation: Andi Victorino was actually very interesting as a teen mom, which normally garners sympathy but here manages to give her darker tones as she seems to use her daughter as an excuse to win.

Best Realism: Michelle Wexler was just a nice ordinary girl who made a lot of sense to me.

Best Heroic Character: Rosemary Michaels was very sympathetic.

Best Villainous Character: Hansel Williams has cemented his rank amongst the worst villains in SOTF. In a good way.

Best Tragic Character: Maynard Hurst, Alice Gilman, and

Best Humorous Character: Michael Mitchellson had very good internal humor, and Tessa Blackridge’s death was very funny.

Best Tactics: KK thought out her options and went with the one she thought would work best and stuck to it and it served her well. Maddie’s planning also went well for her.

The Sympathy Award: Michelle ;~;

The Empathy Award: I really understood how Joe Carrasco’s actions stemmed from his experience on the island, and it made sense.

The Gone-Too-Soon Award: Lauren Rowe had a lot of potential and it’s a shame she died so soon.

The He-Had-It-Coming Award: Summer kinda needed to be put down.

Scenes and Deaths

Best Tragedy: Maddie Wilcox’s death was a very poignant and sad scene as she realizes it was never meant to be.

The Stomach-Churner: Everyone remembers Naomi Bell getting cannibalized by Summer, especially with the brutal fight beforehand. I’m also going to suggest Rosemary Michaels getting strangled by KK. That was pretty dark.

Best Impact: It feels self-promoting, but I’m going to say Theo and Hansel’s first thread. I think it really started Hansel’s island experience and that really influenced the game. Beyond that, I’m gonna say the formation of the baseball girl group, which led to some good scenes and drama. That was a big catalyzing moment.

Best Comedy: Tessa Blackridge plays Go Fish with the Grim Reaper.

The Sunglasses-and-Explosions Award: I enjoyed Hansel and KK’s fight.

Best Feeling-Inducer: Maddie Wilcox and Casey Malkovitch as they contemplate their eminent mortality.

Best Drama: All of the Final 10 deaths ‘cause of the hidden rolls thread. That was cool and I enjoyed the suspense from it.

Best Surprise: Claire Monaghan hadn’t really stood out most of the game, but her death was strong. Same for Finn Grant, Cyrus White and Katy Warren.

Predictions, Preferences, and Positions

If you could change ANYTHING that has happened thus far, what would you change? (Bonus points: Not the crash) I wish I’d made it farther, really. Dropping from V5 was really tough and I wish I’d had more of an opportunity to keep playing. But oh well.

There are four remaining characters. Who are you counting on to be the overall winner of V5? I really think it’ll be Hansel. He’s been such a huge part of V5 I don’t think anyone thought he’d make it any less far and I’ll bet he could go all the way.

How do you predict the ending of V5 is going to turn out? It’s gonna be epic, I can tell you that.
Prediction on outcome: Mara kills Zubin, Hansel kills Joey, Mara/Hansel kills Hansel/Mara

How much did you enjoy/not enjoy V5? It was an amazing experience. I can only imagine how fun V6 will be.

What do you like the most about V5? There’s lots of good things to say and good characters to say them about. I’m going to go with the villains. V5 had possibly the best collection of players, killers and crazies in any main version, and that goes a long way.

What do you think could have been better about the version? I think pacing is always tricky, because getting far and feeling like you’ve gotten far are hard to line up perfectly. It’s something everyone can have trouble with sometimes.

What do you think of the overall SOTF story? I think it needs to expand. Announcements are nice and Meanwhile was really good for this but I think some special announcements on occasion not directly related to the game or its participants would be cool. Not frequently, but every so often a little thing might be neat.

How do you feel about V5 compared to prior versions? Best version yet.

How do you think V6 will differ from/compare to V5 and prior versions? I think people will try to write more characters out of their comfort zone, which I think was pretty prevalent in V5. It’ll be interesting and lots of fun, I’m sure.

Talk About Yourself

What has been your favorite thing to write in V5? Just doing so many different scenes with a lot of people. My absolute favorite single thing, though, is probably the two Theo/Hansel threads. I had a lot of fun planning those out with Naft and it was really fun to write.

Which of your V5 characters was your favorite to write? Gwen. I think Nina was solid in writing but I was so lost with her story she didn’t feel cohesive. Theo did interesting things and is probably more (in)famous, but his personality was really scattered and he wasn’t a really solid player standard. Gwen was, I think, my most grounded concept and I think that really carried over to game because she felt realest for me to write and I could get into her nuances a bit more.

What are you proudest of in V5? How much I’ve grown as a writer and, in some ways, as a person since I’ve been here. When I first started my writing was okay, but being here has made it get so much better, I’d like to think, just from doing so much of it and having so much fun in the meantime. I’ve learned a lot from V5, so I think that’s something to be proud of.

What do you wish you could improve? For next version, I want to have more cohesive plots. With V5 I had trouble tying a character’s actions, motivations and personality all together in a neat package. I hope to improve that in V6 ‘cause I think that’s probably my biggest weaknesses.

What is your favorite V5 memory? Just being part of the community; chatting about SOTF in the IRC, playing games, skyping, all that was so much fun. I just like being a part of the site!

What else would you like to share? Anything goes! I’ve been on SOTF for almost two years as of two weeks from today (11/6). It’s been a fantastic experience and I’m really thankful to all of you for making this so fun and doing this with me. Here’s to many more versions to come!

V3 Read-A-Thon
I should probably also drop Brad. IRL issues of late have prevented me from doing much reading, so I don't have time to read him. Apologies.
