If you're interested in the PBE, I suggest applying now. I was able to get insta-approved while poking around apps tonight between homework stuff. Can't mess with it for a couple days, though. :(
If this gets me free shit I am in.
You only get it on the PBE account, and you have to re-apply every month or so to stay/get back in,is my understanding, with no guarantees they'll keep you. But you get to test basically every champion, including some before release. Also you get wonderful stuff like this Vlad bug apparently going around where hitting his E gives him 5000 health regen/5 instead of 5.

Oh, this wasn't even normals. It was ARAM, and I have fairly high ARAM MMR from getting carried by Rattle in a ton of games. I get a lot of high ranked solo queue people who don't play a lot of ARAM, which I think is a case of folks meeting in the middle.

I just always get nervous because I'm clearly not mechanically on par with them and also I own a ton of champs I don't know how to play so of course tend to get Murphy's Lawed a bunch and end up feeding.

If the recorder function of op.gg worked properly, you can watch me fail to flash assassinate squishies twice and succeed in dueling an OOM Nautilus once at this link (which launches spectator data through your client). Elise was apparently streaming, and Zilean was Diamond V. Ali was unranked, and the other two were mid-gold.

I've wondered for a long time what would happen if you asked team builder for five mids...

These guys did it

I snuck off for two creep waves at the start, got revolver and snowballed like crazy. Could duel everyone but Soraka to a standstill by the end, usually 1v2. It was great though Zed raged for some reason. It was an awesome game aside from that, though. I think I mostly did well because a. I've been spamming Vlad all week, b. I play almost exclusively ARAM so I know how to teamfight at level three, and c. I'm pretty good at trolly/cheap tactics and thus was better at farming jungle and such and baiting dives.

Our team in response to their five-man push sent Twitch solo bot to get fed, then held. After a while, we tagged Zed out for top, too. Everyone kinda sucked at counter-pushing, though, so it lasted way longer than it should have. I did get legendary at one point, though, at the end I died but did so dueling and killing both LB and Karma, which let Zed wreck their nexus unopposed.

Bonus charts proving I didn't just ks and also Zed rage in the chat :(

EDIT: Actually, I just remembered how before the game, Zed and Kha said that they were a duo. Kha was first playing and trying to learn to jungle. That's probably where the rage came from; according to op.gg Kha's Bronze V and Zed's Silver IV, so it was probably a lesson screwed up by unconventional strategy.

V5 Thirteenth Rolls
That's right over deadline for the unextended, all of whom made it.

Contests will be up fairly soon, possibly as soon as tomorrow. As a quick reminder, you don't get rolled over into next month even if you're extended, so getting deaths done sooner rather than later will behoove you on that front.

So I had this game with midlane Garen and jungle Leona...

I really think it was such a stomp because the other team all started raging and flaming each other in allchat. Also, Nasus didn't know how to deal with me and would just sit back and let his tower kill the minions rather than risk eating poke, plus he rushed armor against me, so he was totally useless.

V5 Thirteenth Rolls

Everyone un-extended: one day, twenty-two hours, and fifty minutes for deaths. We may get the contests going pretty promptly this month, so be aware of that as well.

So, my old computer has my old item sets. They're mostly boring/copied from Rattle or Ricky or guides...

...except, that is, "Garen #1", which consists of (each in its own block, presented in order):
  • Health Potion
  • Boots of Speed
  • Warmog's Armor
  • Sunfire Cape
  • Giant's Belt
  • Thornmail

Oh my god. I didn't even notice.

Aatrox and Lucian both called bot. Lucian tried to explain being a support and it obviously made zero impression, so then he was like, "Actually, nnoooo, why don't you go duo top?" Aatrox went, "Will you be okay?" And Lucian was like, "Yes. Go top."

Lucian was gold. Aatrox was like level 4 or something. He kept turret diving and ulting minions and stuff, and basically got kills when he last hit champs I'd already ground down. It was amusing, though.

I did one on my smurf later, and I watched a dude go 1/9/8 to Ryze Bot as Kat. ><

Beginner Bots

The untold story on the scoreboard is that I played this on my ancient computer, which is to say, at 12 fps on a trackpad. The only champs I trust myself with under these conditions are Xin Zhao, Teemo, Sona, and Yi. ><

New V5 Reduced Activity Notices
So, I have a stupidly huge amount of homework for the next four days, followed by two days off and then a family visit lasting five days or so. As such, I will be almost completely unavailable from today (April 13, 2014) until a week from Wednesday (April 23, 2014). I will still be checking in for staff matters during this time. I will still be posting with my remaining TV V2 kid whenever it becomes my turn, probably at the same speed I have been until now. I just won't be in chat/particularly available for non-staff related site things/keeping up very well with reading. PM me if there's any sort of emergency or staff issue, but for anything else responses may be delayed/brief.

Assists are for the weak and also smurfing Kat is apparently for scumbags

In case it's not blatantly obvious, LeBlanc was also a smurf. I think all but two of my deaths came from losing duels to her, mostly early game. The other two were dying 1v4ing but it's okay because it actually worked the last time.

V5 Halfway Plastic Hammers
The Plastic Hammer Awards!

The Basics

Handler Name: MurderWeasel

Your Trademark Character: Susan Clarke

Current Status of Trademark Character: Ms. Not-appearing-in-this-version

Favorite Character: Mara Montalvo

Favorite Weapon: Yo, ballistic knife, I'm real happy for you and I'mma let you finish, but Cooper has the best knife of all time. Of all time!

Favorite Scene: Let's say Mara's BKA pickup. All the BKA pickups have impressed me a lot, actually. Not something I'd've expected prior to the game.

Favorite Death: Jesse Jennings'

Favorite Quote: "Alive's close to alright." – Lauren Rowe

Favorite Post: KK's initial plan is everything I want to see a villain type think through.

Favorite Location: The shipping containers feel really atmospheric to me (I can compliment parts of the island because I basically had no part in making it beyond grammar edits! ><)

Best Character Development: What character development has kept you intrigued?

Bella's character change has impressed me a ton. Losing her meds was the best thing ever to happen to her narrative. It's especially interesting to me because I feel it actually serves her well retroactively, too; edges of what she becomes really have been there since the start.

Best Game Impact: Which character do you feel has brought the most positive development to the game as a whole, outside their specific storyline?

I feel like Summer addressed some topics that are really, really hard to do well in SOTF and got people talking. For a long time, there was a sort of taboo nature around things, and while I think there's a reason for a lot of that, she challenged a lot of preconceptions and really got the community discussing and involved in a cool way.

Best Innovation: Which character has been a breath of fresh air for you?

Paris Ardennes displays a very firm grasp on narrative, especially when it comes to withholding/revealing information selectively without sending me into an Annie Wilkes rage.

Best Realism: Which character is really grounded in reality in a way you find appealing?

Kyran Dean is a standout here because he's a character who really has a lot of complexity and layers. He's inconsistent in the good way, always reacting based on what's going on and really taking what's happening onboard.

Best Heroic Character: Which good guy has you solidly on their side?

Xavier Contel. He's one of a very few, or maybe even the only, kid I'd really call a hero. It takes a lot to try your hardest and die for it all in favor of doing the right thing.

Best Villainous Character: Who is your favorite ne'er-do-well?

I really dig KK. I feel like she's well realized, has some really good layers, and is surprisingly subtle in some ways.

Best Tragic Character: Whose sad and inevitable fate have you most enjoyed lamenting?

Let's say Miranda Millers. She tried so hard to make it, and in the end she died for a misunderstanding in a fight that was never hers.

Best Humorous Character: Which character made you laugh the most? (And I will smack you if it's someone doing it "unintentionally". Be nice in the hammer. >:C)

Cooper. Cooper's great because he's incidentally funny rather than constantly cracking jokes, and Tre has a firm enough handle on him to also know when to let him be serious for a bit.

Best Tactics: Through elimination of the competition or a solid plan for survival, who's kept you interested in their struggle to make it back home?

Matt Vartoogian is a man with a plan. Playing it safe but opportunistic and using groups for protection without getting overly attached all add up to pretty good tactics.

The Sympathy Award: Which character did you feel the most for, and most want good things for?

Andi. She's started down a dark path, but she's someone who's faced a ton of rough spots in her life already, and within the first day on the island faced loss in a way quite different from many of the other kids.

The Empathy Award: Which character could you most easily put yourself in the shoes of?

Lauren Rowe made a ton of sense to me, overall. She was realistic and interesting and made calls that were logical on the whole.

The Gone-Too-Soon Award: Which deceased character should have stuck around a little longer?

Francis was one of my favorites and I'll never ever get over him dying so early. >:C

The He-Had-It-Coming Award: Who best earned their (possibly still forthcoming) demise?

Summer's end felt totally inevitable in the good way.

Scenes and Deaths

Best Tragedy: Which scene or death made you the most teary eyed?

The failure of the escape attempt, and the lead up to that. I really thing that the entire attempt will benefit from a reread knowing its outcome. It's fascinating also as an example of the tonal shift of V5, towards the darker.

The Stomach-Churner: Which scene or death has most effectively played with the gory/violent/overall disturbing side of the game?

Jesse Jennings retrieving a collar to experiment on. V5 has seen some pretty gross stuff, but that one gets special mention.

Best Impact: Which scene or death do you think best played a positive role in changing the course of the game?

Not a specific scene, but we've seen a ton of villain turnover. In past versions, the biggest baddies almost always ended up feeling safe until the final third or so. Losing killers early has kept the scene fresh and interesting.

Best Comedy: Which scene or death served as the best comic relief?

Mara clubbing Hansel unconscious, and then trying to wiggle her way out of the ensuing situation, is darkly amusing for me. I think a lot of it's in the writing; it's a really well-executed sudden thing, as he's just KOed.

The Sunglasses-and-Explosions Award: Which scene or death had the best action going on?

Max Sawyer's first two kills by the pool are a good example of some really well executed fight scenes.

Best Feeling-Inducer: Which scene or death provoked the best emotional reaction from you?

R.J.'s talk with Maddie in the parking garage hits all the right notes to be touching and sad.

Best Drama: Which scene or death had you on the edge of your seat in the way of conflict, suspense, and drama?

When Casey was abandoned after the homestead became a DZ. It was a great showing from all involved, and it was just such a terrifying idea, played to the hilt.

Best Surprise: Which scene or death caught you most off guard in a pleasant way, either through its unpredictable nature or its unique execution?

Karen's and Cyrus' deaths worked really well in a way that actually retroactively fixed some of the issues I had with their roles in the escape. Both were really well executed ends to characters' stories, and that was an extremely pleasant surprise.

Predictions, Preferences, and Positions

If you could change ANYTHING that has happened thus far, what would you change?

I would keep whoever vandalized the escape attempt folks' planning doc from doing it. That that happened really disappointed and upset me.

V5 Final Four: List them! This can either be an ideal list, or IC or OOC predictions.

Doing five since V4 had five. B)

Hansel Williams
Iselle Ovalle-Vandermeer
KK Konipaski
Madeline Wilcox
Mara Montalvo

Who of the surviving characters are you cheering on to win V5?

I've been trying not to cop out on answers basically entirely so I can cop out on this one. V5 has the biggest batch of winners I'd be satisfied with of any version I can remember, and I' be thrilled to see any of my finalist picks take it, as well as probably half a dozen other kids.

How do you predict the ending of V5 is going to turn out?

With any luck, really well. I feel like part of what V4 struggled with a lot was the space between the final 25 or so and Endgame, so I'm hoping to see V5 really pick up the slack and rock that span. I hope we see a less traditional Endgame, too. I feel like there's a lot of room for more nuance now, given the kids left.

How much did you enjoy/not enjoy V5?

I enjoyed it a lot! Especially the reading side of things.

What do you like the most about V5?

The grammar. This is a kinda subtle thing, but this has been the first version where going into a thread I can be pretty sure everyone's writing is gonna be legible on a basic mechanical level, and it is such a welcome change. Keep up the good work, everyone!

What do you think could have been better about the version?

A sense of scale. I've mentioned this a few times, but it doesn't feel like V5's halfway done to me. It still feels very early days, and when we're closing fast on the final fifty that's not a good thing. A decent number of characters have had arcs that feel like they've been on the island for a week and experienced stuff in that time, but I wouldn't say that's true of the majority.

How do you feel about V5 compared to prior versions?

Every version has strengths and weaknesses. I think V5 will be fondly remembered for sure, but I don't think it's head and shoulders above older versions. It's fixed a lot of the historic problems in really interesting and cool ways, but in the process has cropped up a whole slew of new problems to puzzle over in the future.

What do you think of the overall 'SOTF' story?

This is a discussion for another place.

How do you think V6 will differ from/compare to V5 and prior versions?

I predict V6 will continue a lot of the V5/6 trends, but with still further refinement. Ideally, it can strike a good balance between the two.

Talk About Yourself

What has been your favorite thing to write in V5?

Was gonna say pregame, but to be honest all the super in-jokey references and stuff for Steven were pretty amusing too, if only to me.

Which of your V5 characters was your favorite to write?

Susan, actually. There's a long and complicated explanation, but that's a big part of why she didn't make it into the game.

What are you proudest of in V5?

I didn't fall into certain traps I was worried about in the wake of V4. I've noticed there's a strong tendency for handlers to, after their first version (and especially if they get noticed a lot) either try to recapture/exceed their past glory or feel sort of down about not doing so. I made a cast of characters with the idea that they'd be pretty much entirely different from my V4 crew, and specifically that they'd be a bit more backseat, and as a result I never really felt I was fighting my past.

What do you wish you could improve?

In avoiding those traps, I fell into entirely different traps instead. Basically, I avoided all of the things that usually draw me to characters with the exception of personal jokes and writing challenges. The thing is, it really kept me a few degrees more separated from my kids than I usually like, and I feel like the overall quality of my stuff suffered a lot as a result of that. Also, scale! I'm not just referring to everyone else when I say kids who'd stuck around for a long time sure didn't feel like it.

What is your favorite V5 memory?

Oh, lots. Chat stuff, probably.

What else would you like to share? Anything goes!

I forget a ton of stuff and my answers vary moment by moment, so the next time I fill out Hammers it'll likely be totally different replies.

Also, because I live to disappoint, I'm gonna make Ciel and backslash regret voting Adam for most realistic by revealing for the first time ever the circumstances of his creation:

July 27 2011

So yeah, when I said I sit on the punchlines to jokes for years and stuff, this is the thing I was talking about.

BDA Quote Voting Thread #6
Whoops! Ran a bit over again. Thanks for voting!
