New General SOTF Discussion Thread
Ooh, Rattle, I really like that one.

Funnily, I happen to know there were a few more direct statements/struggles against STAR that were planned, but fell through due to time. It'd have certainly cast a very different color on the whole thing (and I did really like that some of the students did protest).

Another fun bit of trivia from the old "Anything can happen!" idea: staff didn't actually tell handlers for quite a while that everyone didn't actually just blow up. I mean, I think it was fairly obvious contextually (it's important for site trust to lay out really clearly what situations may cause handlers to lose characters), but there was a bit of "What if everyone really did die?" talk kicked around. It'd have certainly left the version with a different tone.

Actually, an interesting artifact of the tape delay is that a rescue now would be a lot riskier for STAR/whoever, in that they'd be going in blind (barring some sort of mole situation again). This would probably preclude a similar blacklist from being enacted under most circumstances, which is a nice little side effect from the terrorists' point of view.

Couldn't they just get one of the kids to tell them who's been on the announcments a lot like Hansel, KK, Travis etc?
They could, but they'd have no real way of knowing if it was true or not and could easily get misled and/or lied to by all involved. Especially on a short timeline (the V4 rescue was only a few hours, iirc),it'd be a major complicating factor at the least, especially if, say, someone fingered the wrong Maxwell by mistake.

I mean, doing stuff at low level/low equipment is more an exercise in creative cheesing than overall skill.
This sounds like my kind of game! I'm a total veteran at abusing crummy enemy AI to make up for my total lack of reflexes, aim, or basic comprehension of core game mechanics.

Resource Thread
If you're a huge grammar geek and/or need help on an edge case, I find that the Purdue Writing Lab is pretty good stuff. It's not always where I end up in researching, say, title capitalization conventions, but I'd say four out of five times it has what I'm looking for.

New General SOTF Discussion Thread
I sat on replying for a bit here so as to not preempt non-staff opinions, but I figure it's been long enough.

The V4 Rescue seemed largely (though certainly not universally) well-received at the time, though a lot of folks were very sad it landed when it did because a handful of fan favorite characters died right before it hit who would have otherwise been eligible (Dutchy, Annaliese, Melissa, I think one or two others).

People played a bit cagey with which characters were or were not going to get rescued. At best, this added some nice suspense and danger in a way rather unique to the situation; with characters now eligible to live, suddenly not taking that option (and thus being condemned to extremely probable death) was a bigger deal again. The flip side of this was that some handlers pushed it a bit further, trying to directly play into the will-they-or-won't-they drama, and ended up writing themselves into corners where it made no sense to not have their kids rescued and yet they didn't anyways. These sorts of scenes were not looked on very favorably even at the time, and in my opinion have aged exceptionally poorly, since even the dubious benefit of keeping the site guessing has since been lost.

I personally held my rescued kid until the very end of the last day, partially so I could be absolutely sure on my call, partially due to some post order/activity issues, and partially to dodge plot complications that would have potentially arisen due to other characters in one of the escape threads. I'd figured out what I was going to do, roughly speaking, a good bit in advance, but generally kept quiet or feigned ignorance because spoilers are no fun.

I can't speak too much to blacklist reaction. From a staff end, it was an interesting exercise in judgement calls. There was actually a fairly sizable list of edge case characters where I wasn't sure whether or not they were over the line--if in doubt, we tended to err in favor of leaving characters eligible. The cutoff ended up being characters who were multiple murderers without some strong mitigating factor (such as Samantha Ridley, who assisted three suicides [and, funnily enough, ended up the top surviving killer of V4]) or who had only one kill but were clearly playing, usually as a team or partnership of some kind (this is the provision that caught Ema, Nick, and Teo).

Actually, I still have the edge case kids in my notes. This is from whenever I pulled together the initial list.

The folks who were almost on Santa's naughty list

Interestingly, four of them ended up getting saved. I'm glad the blacklist drew some attention towards the characters on it. It was never intended as a punishment for handlers, but was rather a way to complicate the morality of STAR's actions in a way that logically followed from their aims. The blacklist included characters I loved, characters I really did not love, and characters who fell somewhere between the ends of the spectrum.

I think people took a wide range of approaches to determining which character to save, if any. For me, I picked my character who I was most interested at the time in exploring in an off-island situation and who had the least going on on-island (the bulk of her friends and allies having died horribly a few weeks before the rescue launched). It was very much a question of what stories I was interested in telling. This is, actually, where some stuff that eventually ended up in V4's epilogue originated, especially the bit about approaching Mr. McCreery (and I guess the whole concept of searching for that sort of closure). Kimberly was like way down on my list of prospective rescuees, though, like a notch above Aaron.

When the V3 escape was announced, I was like, "Yes! Vindicated!" Funnily, there are still logs from a chat way back in the good old days. I'm posting the whole thing because it's pretty funny, but the parts I'm proud of are from the start (I was still KV back then). This was apparently early April, 2009:

The Legend of the Really Big Snake

I was really glad to see some of the escapees turn up again in the epilogue and am still holding out hope that we'll someday maybe see the remaining handful capped off.

For V5... it'd depend on the nature of the exclusion list. If it was for the same rough goal, I can actually see a possible case for Paris getting excluded due to his murders by proxy. It'd have been a very tough call, but there was definitely some wiggle room and Paris was differentiated from V4's sneaky folks in that while he generally kept his bad stuff secret from the other kids on the island, he didn't hide it too much from the cameras/observers, so STAR could've figured out something fishy was going on.

Blood Bowl
Bump! Blood Bowl is currently super cheap on Steam (three bucks for the Legendary Edition, four fifty for Chaos), and I'm vaguely looking at picking it up. Is there any real reason to get the Chaos Edition if you don't care about the teams? Also, is there any lingering SOTF interest in setting up a league/running stuff? I may have another interested recruit as well, but we're still mulling it over.

EDIT: We decided three bucks was worth the risk so both Tris and I got Legendary Edition. So if there's any interest in starting a new league, we're both down (warning: I'm awful at video games and know jack squat about sports, so I'll be the dumpster-tier team).

Fallout New Vegas Thread: Mojave, Mo Problems
I just came to post about the sale, but see it is already here.

So anyways, I picked it up. I've never played a Fallout game before, but watched Tris play most of 3 way back when. I'll report whenever I get started if I die in any particularly entertaining ways.

EBWOP: He did it the past two phases. Lightly, but it's there. It was enough of a pattern that I had my roleclaim all typed up two days ago, then decided to sit on it to avoid rushing the end of the phase prior to getting good discussion in. I really want multiple parties talking about multiple leads, and figured my claim was likely to narrow us in on one avenue of discourse.
So, wait, are you saying you've had information on Percy for two day phases, then?
Some information, yes. It became better/more complete last night phase, though.

Order Of The Stick Mafia Game Thread
That's fine. And I can toss down more info if you think it's a good idea; it's entirely possible that I'm incorrect in my suspicion that it's better to keep scum in the dark.

I also am prepared to drop a list of my targets for the past three phases in advance, in case scum kills me tonight, for further edification of the masses. The only reason I'm being cagey is that it leaves scum with less info to go off of when targeting me or others.

I have some information on Un directly, yes.

So, I'm not going to push for a full claim on your role yet, Murder, but I'd like some indication of why you're not completely certain on Percy, if you don't mind.

His reaction to the night's events, coupled with my knowledge of certain actions taken by certain parties, suggests he's deliberately obfuscating what went down to throw certain other parties off the trail.

Order Of The Stick Mafia Game Thread
I sat quietly for a bit to allow discussion to occur.

Alright. Part of why I've been fairly nonchalant about and willing to engage with suspicion of me over the past few days is that I have a pretty ironclad name claim. I am Vaarsuvius, and I am a town-aligned power role. Given that I lucked into getting a character who has potential to hold a lot of different powers while being in-flavor, I'd rather not say more at this time, but I can share info if Vyse and Slam want it since I trust them. That said, the results of my night actions have left me ~85% sure that Un is scum.

Vyse:

I scum-read Un. I read Badb as a detriment to town regardless of alignment. Decoy is complicated a bit by my scum-read on Un and his intentness on quickly returning the Decoy wagon to prominence.

What. So you actually believed that lyncher claim, Toben? I'm confused. How do you react if I claim, for example, Cthulu or Survivor?
Rachel tends to play extremely fast and loose. If she was serious, it's interesting information. If she wasn't, that's two phases of intentional obfuscation and that's about my personal policy-lynch threshold on her. But it seemed to be in reply to my question here, so I'll be treating it seriously at the moment.

RC

Well, there are Naïve Doctors (or Quacks) in mafia, which means they can target people but they cannot save people. So I assume they could've been Naïve Bodyguards as well. That'd explain the multiple protective roles in combination with the no-kill.

In general, those roles aren't very popular on SOTF because they're not just tricky but actively useless an detrimental to the town and the person assigned them (in that they feed false info and provide no other function). I would not assume their presence before we see some proof.

Order Of The Stick Mafia Game Thread
Also, Un: Could you go through and give slight leanings on all the people you didn't read one way or the other in your linked post? I'm actually really interested in it. Also, how does Rachel's claim change your read on RC?

Order Of The Stick Mafia Game Thread
I have a few things to go into in greater detail later.

In the mean time, I propose we don't vote for RC absent some pretty solid reasons. Lynchers targeting scum tend to be awful for balance (and nothing Rachel says suggests that RC is scum, which she would've brought up if he was). I'd be interested in her flip since she has no reason to favor town over scum from this point forwards, and if she does flip lyncher it'll pretty much confirm RC as town. I don't think we should waste a vote on it unless there's nothing else going, but it's certainly worth a look should that come up.

Ooh, good catch. Feel free to add any terrorists who have turned up if you want to.

The list of names is large an artifact of V1/2-era planning that at some point was purged from the lounge by old staff (there's basically a thread that has "I owe you one set of terrorist profiles" in it), so a lot has changed and been retooled to fit what the plot has become absent the original information. I would not expect much of any of the KIA terrorists; they can probably be assumed to have died in the V3/4 incidents if not detailed otherwise. I'll have to check with staff to get a cogent and official answer, though.
