Doctor Eggman's base. A snowy region, a white acropolis. Searchlights patrolled the area, robots surrounded the main perimeter. It was undisturbed. Until...
A figure appeared, a blur streaking through the forest. This did not go unnoticed by the robots, who immediately turned to open fire on the figure, but it dodged every one, slashing straight through the middle of the crowd of bots, any in its path being destroyed. The figure then bounced off of another and leapt high over the gate of the base and landed in a crouch on the other side.
The figure then darted past a searchlight and hid near some crates, then received a communication from its wrist communicator.
"Transmission from G.U.N. Commander," a gruff voice said. "We've spotted an SOS coming from deeper inside the base. We lost communication with our agent over 24 hours ago. We expect an immediate rescue... Shadow the Hedgehog."
The black hedgehog nodded to himself as he listened to the communication from the commander. He processed the data in his head, the signal, the target, the location. Breaking into the Doctor's base should be a snap.
"Understood," said Shadow. "Initiating the mission now."
"Shadow," said the Commander, just before the hedgehog could get moving. "Don't screw this one up. We need her back alive."
Shadow only frowned. Tensions only remained tight between himself and the Commander, even though they had managed to set aside their differences. Shadow now held only an indifference towards the Commander, but the man himself seemed like he couldn't let go, even though he was consciously and obviously trying to break these tensions and seem levelheaded in the hedgehog's presence. Shadow only lowered his head.
     "I won't," he answered simply.
"Good luck," the Commander replied promptly.
Shadow stared at the communicator for a moment, then simply cut the connection and lowered his hand. With a glance to the side, he vanished, initiating Chaos Control even without an Emerald and inserting himself deeper inside the base...

This had been one hectic mission so far, and it tested the limits of every skill Rouge possessed as both a bounty hunter and a secret agent. But she had done it: She had successfully infiltrated Eggman's base, stolen the Scepter of Darkness, and was on her way out when she had become trapped in here.
She had been trying to find her way out of here for over a day now, and was making progress in escaping slowly but surely. She had sent out the SOS, knowing full well that she could escape herself, just would need some sort of aid to cross the final border and get off without an issue.
And she was close... She had made her way through the bowels of the facility and taken out a few searchlights in the process. And now she was at the end... Just flip this switch... And she was free, free to meet up with whatever backup G.U.N. had sent and get out of here scot-free...

     "Shadow? Why you?"
It wasn't exactly the greeting he had expected from Rouge. He had just gone through the trouble of getting into the base, fighting his way past a hoard of robots, and avoiding traps, and got this as a greeting?
"It's a request from the President," Shadow replied, somewhat gratingly. Then, he turned around immediately and said, "Let's get out of here."
Rouge looked somewhat affronted. She had gone through a lot of trouble herself, and she was clearly holding an object of rare value, which Shadow seemed to simply disregard.
"Don't you wanna know what this is?" she asked, with a hint of insult.
Shadow whirled to face her, pointing his index finger at her. "My assignment was to rescue you. Nothing more."
Though, despite his response, he couldn't help but spare the scepter a glance, then immediately turned away and started to walk away again. Rouge only lowered her head and sighed.
"It's always business with you," she said whilst shaking her head.
Once the pair had taken a few steps forward, Shadow paused, lowered his head, and closed his eyes, tapping into the Chaos Force and teleporting both of them out of the base using Chaos Control...

The two reappeared in a small lab, wherein was a computer terminal before them displaying the image of a city's topical layout. Rouge recognized it immediately and stepped towards it, the scepter still in her hands.
"Ah, Soleanna," she said, "the city of water. It has a constitutional monarchy, you know."
Shadow, not exactly interested in such things, only took a look over the map and then turned away. He then noticed a painting hanging nearby on the wall, that of a young girl, and, curiously, took a step toward it.
"The primary industries," Rouge continued, not noticing Shadow was not listening, "are tourism and crafting precision machinery." Rouge finally then noticed that Shadow was no longer beside her, turning to see his sudden interest in the painting. Smiling to herself, she continued, "The current sovereign is Princess Elise the Third."
Shadow listened to this, though dismissed it. He wasn't sure what had drawn him to the painting in the first place. Ever since Maria, he— No. Forget it. Crossing his arms, he turned to face Rouge.
"Why does Eggman's base lead to an odd place like this?" he asked.
"How should I know?" Rouge said, then raised the scepter significantly as she added, "I just followed my orders and retrieved the item." While this was true, she said this as a sort of stab at his earlier comment about his assignment being nothing more than to rescue her. Unfortunately, Shadow remained stoic, so Rouge simply shook her head and continued. "Anyway, I have a little favor to ask of you. Could you escort me to the G.U.N. rendezvous point?"
"Where's the rendezvous point?" Shadow asked.
Rouge then turned and pointed towards a region in the top-right of the topical map. "It's the ancient castle of Soleanna, in Kingdom Valley."

The two then entered the city of Soleanna itself, and were immediately granted a communications from the Commander, who revealed that he had prepared the means to get to Kingdom Valley and directed them to head to the forest cave immediately. The two acknowledged and began to head to the designated coordinates.
They exited the city and into the forest. It didn't take long for them to find the cave, though it was blocked up by a landslide. Shadow remedied this by drawing into the power of Chaos and blasting through the rocks, where they had found the "means to get to Kingdom Valley" waiting for them: A high-powered, weapons-laden glider. Shadow and Rouge glanced at each other, shrugged, and then took up positions in the machine, then began to pilot it towards their destination.
Surprisingly, the castle ruins were littered with Eggman's robots. Fearing that Eggman had tracked them here, the two picked up the pace, blasting away the robots with missile salvos, then abandoning the glider when it became unnecessary. It didn't take them long to finally reach the extraction point, what looked to be a desolate throne room.
"The king of Soleanna used to rule this place," Rouge began to explain. "Until an accident that took place 10 years ago."
"Accident?" Shadow asked, unable to contain his curiosity.
Rouge would have smiled now that she had his attention, but her next bit of info was not exactly something to smile about. "Rumor was that they were working on a prototype energy source, the name of which was—"
"The Solaris Project," an all-too-familiar voice said from overhead.
The two looked up to see Eggman, situated in a hovering mech, which looked to be a modified form of the Eggmobile, only with two large arms. Beside him, a round, red orb unfolded to reveal a small robot, who waved at the pair, but they only reacted by preparing to go on the defensive.
"Nice to see you again, Rouge," Eggman greeted in a false manner. "And you too, Shadow. I was hoping you would bring back the Scepter of Darkness to me..."
As soon as he said this, a ring of robots suddenly appeared and surrounded both Shadow and Rouge, but in response, Shadow only threw up his fists and grinned.
"Ha!" he taunted. "There's no strength in numbers!"
"I believe he is correct, Doctor," Orbot droned. "You possess a very large army, yet repeatedly, as though it's a given cycle, you have failed to—"
"QUIET!!" Eggman roared. "Attack!" he then commanded to the robots.
One responded with a missile launch to where Shadow and Rouge were standing. The two immediately dodged, Shadow by rolling, Rouge by taking to the sky. Seeing an opening, Eggman attacked Rouge with one of the mech's arms, causing her to fall from the sky, losing her grip on the Scepter of Darkness.
Shadow looked up just in time and was immediately faced with a dilemma: Rescue Rouge, or rescue the object she had spent so much time on to retrieve? But he knew what he had to do and immediately ran forward, sliding in time to catch Rouge as she fell. Unfortunately, however, that meant that the Scepter would only impact with the ground.
"No!!" Eggman yelled upon realizing this.
"I should have known, Doctor," Orbot responded. "Something like this was bound to happen from the start."
Eggman didn't even bother to respond, as he was too busy pressing his hands against his temples in fear, knowing what the Scepter contained...

The scepter fell through the air, spinning slowly, before hitting the ground with a sickening thud. The end of it shattered, upon impact, releasing a gust of wind that swept around the room. Slowly, a black, almost tar-like mist rose out of the broken artifact, forming a long, twisting snake-like structure, writhing as it rose into the air. The top of the chain twisted back down, like the head of a giant serpent, then dove at the nearest of Eggman's robots, passing through it and destroying it instantly. It curved around in a circle, crashing through all of the machines until none were left. Rising back into the air again, it curved violently and dove down at Shadow. However, it didn't aim at him, per se, but at the ground near him, slamming down through the crumbling floor right through Shadow's shadow.

Slowly, the shadow elongated, reaching the exact shape and size of Shadow. A dark figure began rising out from the ground. It looked just like Shadow, save for the grey fur that replaced Shadow's red areas. And where it's pupils should have been... green, reptilian eyes. The creature, after rising from the rubble, raised his hand, looking it over, before staring Shadow straight in the eye. He began a deep, disturbing laugh. "Fate is ironic, it seems. To think I should be resurrected through your shade. I thank you... Shadow the Hedgehog."

As the scepter shattered and the oozy-substance began spreading through the air, Eggman grunted in frustration and perhaps fear, but Orbot only looked on at the scene and then up at the doctor.
"It appears that the Scepter of Darkness has shattered, Doctor," he said, but Eggman immediately interrupted frantically, "It's no use! Pull back! Pull back! Pull back!"
The mech containing Eggman and Orbot immediately pulled away. Meanwhile, Shadow and Rouge looked around as the mist began destroying the robots, then aimed almost directly for Shadow. He managed to hop back just in time, but his shadow stretched out and absorbed into the ooze, then formulated into an almost exact replica of himself.
     "What? His Shadow..." Rouge said.
Then the creature addressed Shadow, speaking of irony as though it were familiar with him, and even addressed him. Shadow narrowed his eyes, never having encountered this creature before in his life.
"Who are you?" he asked. "And how do you know my name?"

"I'm Mephiles... Mephiles the Dark." The creature began walking forward, arms lying limp at its side, and head faced downwards as if it were dead weight. It took a stumbling step towards Shadow, not used to its new body. "Have you forgotten me already? I owe so much to you, Shadow the Hedgehog." It took another awkward step forward, almost touching Shadow. "What you gave me, I now return to you." It slowly raised its head, propping it up at an diagonal angle, like some gruesome rag doll a child had thrown into a corner. And it gazed into Shadow's eyes with a deep, green, reptilian gaze, seeming to leak pure malice. "A one way ticket to oblivion!" Allowing its head to roll limply around his shoulders, staring lifelessly into the sky, it leaned back, raising its hands into the air. A small vortex began forming between them, giving off electrical sparks. Then suddenly, it enveloped the three of them. Mephiles gave a horrible, twisted laugh, and then the three were gone, as if they had never been there.
