This is crazy. South Korean leader called for "enormous retaliation."

I really, really don't want nuclear weapons to get involved with this, but I hope to god that if they do, it's because one of the good guys decided to decisively end this before NK eviscerated SK. I'd much rather have to live with the stigma of a Hiroshima/Nagasaki situation again than have to live with the complete destruction of a South Korean city AND a North Korean city.

Regardless, I can't see this ending well for North Korea unless they decide to pussy out ASAP. If this turns out to be a war, they will lose and their government will see a complete overhaul.

OK, that might have come across wrong. I absolutely do not want to obliterate a North Korean city. I was talking absolute last resort for protection, if that wasn't clear.

US Missile defence? In USA, SK, Japan and Taiwan.

Anyway I wouldn't worry too much, there is a difference between taking a few shots like this and pressing the button to launch a nuclear warhead.

Kim Il Jong is dying, and he's trying to consolidate his military power for his sons. if anything, now would be the time to steamroll them before their nuclear program advances any further.
but if we try to just destroy them, and limit their power, wouldnt they potentially get angry like the germans did after ww1, starting even more shit later on?

unless we want to completely destroy them and give the land to make a big korea

Korea has to be reuinted. simple as that. allowing their neighbors to build nuclear facilities while still at war is casual suicide really, and as mentioned there really aren't any sanctions left the UN can impose short of a total anaconda maneuver at this point.

Fuck North Korea - Old, dying man with a napoleon complex who needs to be neutered and taught a lesson before he passes on.

That being said, my other non-dead best friend is stationed on the border so I hope he can keep his head.

As a side note, I think it's so interesting that the only two things keeping Communism around right now are stubbornness and China being super rich. I just have to wonder if people living in North Korea can look down south and honestly say, "Yeah, this is much better."

I don't think they get the chance to look.

On a slightly relevant note, a friend of mine did a project on Cuba (Castro) and actually got to talk to some Cuban immigrants who were related to my Spanish teacher. They had just escaped Cuba, and told her all about the things Castro does to keep control. For one, he'll whip up some crazy story in the Cuban media about the Americans invading to scare them all to his side >____>

Actually I might not be thinking of the right guy - is Castro the one that has been on death's doorstep for like ten years?

The South Korean President, Lee Myung-bak, held an emergency meeting and told officials to ''respond sternly'' but to avoid aggravating the situation.

fact is, we really should have taken care of them when Russia was failing and the Berlin wall was coming down. what the hell were we thinking in not striking while the iron was hot?

When someone in here said that Russia shook their head at the attacks, did they mean at both sides or just one side?

I turned the television on CNN to hopefully get the latest developments. Thank god I did, or else I wouldn't have known about Sarah Palin's failing reality show, or rapper TI having a drug problem, or Leonardo DiCaprio donating money to some kind of fund because he got scared nearly dying in a plane crash. Only the most important news for us, America. HLN was talking about some decade old missing persons case and jaw bones. I didn't see Fox News Network, but I'm sure they didn't have shit up on it either.
