Two questions. First up, apparently Utrecht looks really nice and stuff. Is it? And do you prefer the Netherlands or Holland? |

I barely know anything about Utrecht, besides the Dom and that the train station there is the biggest of the Netherlands. I also went to two gaming conventions there >_>b The University is supposed to be pretty good. They're one of the few that have medicine. |

I've never been there. If you are looking for tourist attractions, Utrecht probably isn't the place to be. Visit Amsterdam, and you've seen all of the attractions The Netherlands has to offer.
The Netherlands, because 'Holland' isn't the same as the Netherlands. 'Holland' is the name given two a collection of two provinces that make up at most three to four million people and does not represent the entire country. Stupid thing is that most of my countrymen don't seem to understand this. I blame commercial television. |

"Holland is a name in common usage given to a region in the western part of the Netherlands. Moreover, the term Holland is frequently used to refer to the whole of the Netherlands. This usage is unofficial and ambiguous but generally accepted." From Wikipedia. I don't care as long as people know we're not German >_> |

I disagree on the 'generally accepted [citation needed]' part.

Also important: "The morphologic versatility and cohesiveness of Dutch sometimes produces words that might baffle speakers of other languages due to the large number of consonant clusters, such as the word "angstschreeuw" (scream of fear), which has grand total of eight in a row (ngstschr) (although the ng and ch are digraphs). It has to be noted though that the pronunciation of a word can differ greatly from its written form. " Be sure you're able to pronounce that word or you won't get anywhere. Be sure to record your attempts. |

"Hup Holland Hup" is much easier to chant while you're drunk than "Hup Nederland Hup". |

I know nothing about Utrecht. And I prefer ''Netherlands'' for the exact same reason as TW stated. |

I don't know much about Utrecht's university but in general all universities in the Netherlands operate at the same level of 'prestige', if that's how you want to call it. This is mainly because the enrolment procedures of all universities have been standardized, prerequisites are determined centrally by the government instead of the institutes themselves. The only real difference concerning the education aspect is what you can choose to study. Like Garm said, Utrecht is one of six (I think) locations where you can study medicine. I'm completely in the dark about how well students like Utrecht as a city, but I assume it's OK since I have never met anyone who complained about his city being too uneventful. Keep in mind that Utrecht doesn't have a campus like most universities in your part of the world have. You will have to look for living accommodations in the city itself. (This is the case for practically all universities except Twente.) I don't know how advanced your plans for studying abroad are, but keep in mind that if you do set your eye on The Netherlands you will be in for a costly surprise. Tuition fees for exchange students are substantially higher than those for people with the Dutch nationality. (Think around 8600 Euros per year just for a spot in a program. Garm and I only pay like 1600 Euros.) Instead of following a complete program here, you might want to consider only staying for two quarters. Also, The Netherlands is one of the least interesting places in Europe. If anything, aim for Rome, Paris or London. |

I've got a friend that lives in Utrecht. She used to live in Limburg, but she studied in Utrecht (now She studies in Tilburg) Anyway, she loves the city, apperently, there's a lot stuff to do there. They have some aboriginal art museum, which she loves and stuff. Me myself haven't really been in Utrecht, but according to my friend, there's a lot of stuff going on there... w8, I've been in Utrecht once... I got lost >.> I was at the train station, but couldn't find the station, so I searched for something else, and suddenly I had found the station. Big confusing station they got there... And I prefer Nederland over Holland, but Holland over The Netherlands.... |
