The problem with that is resolving the dozens upon dozens of conflicts about how it would/should play.

And unlike the original four games, you can't just straight take up the gameplay from G.U. (like they did with Fragment), although I would love to see them try.

I haven't played GU yet because I'm still on the second game (fail, I know) but really it seems like all they would have to do is take the engine for the first four games and make it actually multiplayer. And of course add like.. character selections and what not, and actual events in the different areas like they show in the various animu.

There's a lot of things you don't think about that don't actually get touched upon in the games (as strange as that may sound). Especially with inconsistent game rules among different media (which get explained nicely as different revisions), like how PK'ing was allowed in The World R1 at one point, and then taken out, as well as how parties interact (more important in the second series), like how affinity is used for a super attack (which could be used as a "this character has partied with you X amount of times"), and simple things like what you said, like the character creation stuff and events take even more time that they didn't bargain for (since, at its core, these games are single player, even if Fragment does exist).

Basically, a lot of it comes down to story. For instance, you might want to allow certain people .hacker powers like Data Drain, but if you want to keep the story restraints then its only to a few people, which wouldn't mesh well with people who just spent such and such amount of money on a game (something that was touched upon with that Bioware Star Wars thing was that not everyone should be a jedi, but everybody wants to). And then the upgrades that you could get involved getting virus cores, which might have to be changed to something else, making it transparent that they just changed names and absolved themselves of it. And then the small areas, which I'm sure they've said in-media that it's instance-based, but then how many is good enough, and you can't have people using steam bikes everywhere without it getting chaotic fast. Guilds, tournaments, special guild areas, shit, I'm tired of thinking about it.

I just think there's enough shit to go wrong with it. Without the story elements, there's a lot that's missing, and I'm not sure I'd feel comfortable with them adding too much to complement the normal barebones. But I'll admit there are more problems with The World R2 than R1.

Iunno I think the idea itself has gained a lot of charm and just by opening it they'd attract a lot of people..

Regarding story elements, they could do it like they mentioned in SIGNS, with all the sidequests and events and such. Like how you can go to Delta Hidden Forbidden Holy Ground and have an event that gives you wings and they could have special events that would be story-related somehow.

I personally would love to see a FFT mmo. All taking turns moving slowly across the map towards a raid boss. Only 5 squares this turn!

The first step would be the visualizer head-sets that we'd all need, and THEN make the game malfunction to make it truly fantastic.
