hey, its your wallet i'm shopping with, but if your going to cut corners, do it on more peripheral systems you can always upgrade later, not the MoBo. keep your existing monitor for now if it comes down to that or the cores...

Well the thing is I don't have a monitor right now...I have two really old small ones but I want something that's actually decent. I went cheap on the keyboard/speakers/wireless card on purpose. I could always downgrade the HD size to something smaller (since I have a 500 gig external) that would be cheaper, and if anyone knows anything about a cheaper, similar quality cooling system that would be nice to hear about.

That is to say, I don't have a monitor right now because I have a laptop.

also, you can sacrifice on the keyboard, but if it comes down to it, the MoBo, Power Supply, Cooling (DO NOT SKIMP ON THAT WITH THE AMD SET, THAT's 6 MOTHERFUCKING CORES, i know what 2 does to my laptop), and Graphics Card should be the priorities. (anyone with more know-how feel free to contradict me if i'm wrong) everything else can be upped later, hell fuck the HD too, good, huge externals are available for the $100-$200 range. 300ish internal will be fine until you can afford to upgrade for the raw storage cpapbility.

Ok so the site has two Phenom II X6 processors, one is 3.2 GHz at $309.99 and the other is 2.8 at $209.99...that's the only noticeable difference to me. Is the 3.2 so much better that it's really worth $100 more?

i have to say it again, consult the recommended cooling specs for the AMD set before committing to the package, you can never go wrong over-cooling the thing. i have (2) 2.1 GHz Centrino II cores, and my normal load puts them in the 160 degree range, my delta-T point is 190. i get quite a bit out of this $800 laptop, but that new AMD chipset makes me want to build a desktop beast myself. the one drawback to this laptop is that the graphics suck floppy donkey balls. fine for movies, terrible for gaming in any capacity.

how many cores is each one? i'd still go with the faster of the two, but i'd bet the 3.2 is the 6-core beast.

They're both 6 cores actually, the only difference is the frequency.

Also the cooler I went with

Was the highest rated water cooling system on the site so I just figured it's good enough. I will look around for recommendations though.

i've always been a bit hesitant to go the WC route. if something does go wrong and it springs a leak, kiss that machine goodbye...that's just the fact that i work in the electrical trade speaking though.

I don't really have experience with fancy cooling, I just used the heatsink that came with the processor in the last computer I built (which was a long time ago)

watercooling does blow any traditional heatsink out of the "water" though if you'll excuse the horrible pun.

Could you perhaps be more specific with what you want out of your new computer?

I pretty much want one that's powerful, but not top of the line a million dollars powerful. I don't play games very often but if I ever want to play one I'd like to be able to do so at high settings.

I haven't compared this to yours price-wise, but this is what I made for myself and it can play all current games on highest settings.

I've been reading reviews for that X6 processor and people keep saying they need to update their BIOS before they can install it...so does that mean I'll have to plug in a different processor to use the computer and update the BIOS, then uninstall the first one and install the X6?

not sure about that one. Alch would be really useful here right about now.

Considering that you're installing a new mobo and processor means most likely that you will have to re-install everything. So back up that stuff.

Well I'm really starting from a blank slate more or less. I think I should start with my old CPU just to be safe (I know it's AMD so it should be compatible with the motherboard), then install XP or whichever OS we have lying around and update the BIOS, then install the new CPU and do all my actual computer business after that's all done.
