Functional search engine (of sorts).

Despite my aversion for pretty much every piece of code Google farted out on the Internet, I finally decided to install a custom search engine today.

Link:

http://promboards.com/pages/search_destroy/

Or for simpler access, try 'Proogle' in the sub menu.

Currently it loads all the information on a new page. I had to do this since Zeta automatically replaces the search engine's CSS. If the information loads on a page on ProM it will obscure the page numbers.

This engine also comes with the normal hiccups Google has (HATE Google), such as a nonsensical indexing system and a fully wonked 'only match with topic titles' feature. But since it's free, we don't get to complain. Well, I will complain about the fact AltaVista hasn't made any personal search engines yet. (Come on, AltaVista, I like you!)

It's a sad thing that 'love Google' results in 166 hits on Photobucket, whilst just the term 'AltaVista' only yields 92 results.

I haven't got a chance to try out this Proogle, but if I needed to search through topics, I used the Google Site Search bookmarklet. You just install it in your bookmarks toolbar if you have Firefox, and it searches the domain.

Apparently it has the same set-up procedure as the thingy I installed, only it doesn't seem to actually work. Using the tester, I get no results.

Every time I click on this topic I am reminded of pickled relish?

Uh, anyways, cool. I'll try it out.

Yeah but who actually uses search anyway?
It's a useful tool when looking for old stuff, and if the title is the only thing you can still remember. It's not required to make a board fully operable, but it is nice for the occasional nostalgia shot.

I'll use this for the ProMclopedia if it works decently.

Yep. It's a problem we've had since the day we started. IF didn't offer a functional search engine, Brandumb promised a functional one before the conversion to Zeta took place. He did put the feature online for some boards, but only those with ten thousand posts or less. Apparently, ProM was too large.

Phazon's topic alone screwed us over?

Yup, Phazon's topic alone was enough to exceed the limit twice.

Quite an achievement.
