So I'm playing FFXII; Finally giving it a chance

I stopped I'd say a third of the way through Final Fantasy Tactics Advance 2 in order to play some of the Final Fantasy IV DS remake. Boy they did a damn fine job remaking that game. It looks pretty amazing, and it really sucked me in a hell of a lot more than it originally did on the SNES. I can only hope they eventually give Final Fantasy VI the same treatment. That would make me really happy.

Anyway, I stopped playing IV after getting the airship and decided I should go ahead and beat FFTA2 since I was so far through it...but then my mind wandered over to Final Fantasy XII. I reasoned with myself that completing it first would cause me to get more out of FFTA2, and I'm a push over even when it comes down to talking to myself so I gave in late last night and I'm up to where I can finally freely take on hunts and stuff with a decently static party in Final Fantasy XII (so it seems.) And when I saw Seeq and Hurdy I used those sightings to validate to myself my earlier claims of getting more out of FFTA2 after this is beaten.

This time around I've paid more attention to the storyline and am enjoying my experience, doubly so because I'm a fan of MMO's and that's exactly what the game feels like. I guess I should have played this years ago when it first came out.

The freeness of the license system is kind of overwhelming, I'm not sure what to do with everyone. I've made sure everyone can toss a cure around but...as I progress through the game will my characters really just begin to be exact copies of each other, or should I be trying to make them play a specific role such as white mage, black mage, etc. ?

Bolded my point for making the topic.

i mean, you can assign different characters to certain "classes" but in the end, all characters are gonna be the same. youll come to realize(especially if you level grind a bit) the license grid will be filled with all the characters. thats why its only suggested to use only 3 people throughout the game so you dont have to worry about leveling the other 3 since the first 3 can do everything anyways. tis a good game though, definitely not my favorite FF by any means

Apparently the ff12 zodiac edition of the game made it so you can choose different license boards for different classes tha way everybody doesn't all end up the same.

But yeah all my characters in ff12 had the best best healng spells on them and I went and grabbed all the passive skills for all my characters to. But other than that, I made each character have their own unique weapon.

I recommend giving Vaan a bow and making him a sniper. He does good damage with it and you never have to look at him thus giving more screen room for the leading man, Balthier.

It's good to specialize early on, and then gradually go out with it. Try to make sure all the ones that boost your abilities are the ones chosen first. Like the ones that make the ATwannaB go up twice as fast (hey, that was pretty good!).

Also, a lot of people say that quickenings become worthless about halfway through the game (and there is some truth to this), the fact of the matter is that the second you gain the second one, your MP doubles. The third one triples your original MP count. This becomes a godsend. They're also good if you're extremely lucky and about to die. I've managed to squirrel a couple of victories against impossible foes this way.

A third thing? Everytime you get a guest character, take on as many hunts as you can. Most of them can't handle the onslaught of four characters at once. Even better, some of them start with the telekinesis skill, which lets them attack normally against flying enemies. Really nice.

Pretty much yeah, specialize then fill it out later. Also you can always get your guys to level themselves up for you and get powerful pretty easily.

I'm also playing it right now, along with Persona 3 FES, FFX, and Disgaea. I've put about 25 hours into it, pretty fun so far.

Make sure everyone gets Cure early on and set up your gambits to heal below 50% or so health. This will last you about 30 levels, before you actually start getting much better healing spells like Curaga and it's better to have one character specialize.

Like someone else said, focus on three characters. For reference, 95% of the game your party will consist of Vaan, Balthier, Penelo, Fran, Basch, and Ashe, so pick your favorites relatively early. My party was Vaan (damage), Balthier (backup healing, damage), and Ashe (green magic, healing).

Oh yeah... make SURE you get Charge. An MP regen spell is a godsend, it lets you cast spells near continuously. You won't be able to max your MP this way (it starts failing more the more MP you have currently), but it's enough to spam something.

Early on, you'll have to rely on walking to regenerate MP, so have everyone use spells. It recharges faster that way.

Yeah, I hadn't even picked up Charge yet. I just got up to where I have all six members in my party for the first time. I actually like all of the characters so it's been hard to choose a main three but I think I'm going to with the original Vaan, Balthier, Fran arrangement. Got to have bunny ass in the party and Balthier is just the shit.

What do you suggest for weapons and armor, ages? Right now the only person in my party using anything other than light armor is Basch who is using heavy armor since I had him pegged as being my 'tank'. Balthier's gun seems so goddamn weak in comparison to everything else but I like the combo of Fran's bow and Balth's gun backing me up while I'm pilfering and killing.

On Kotaku it says that he likes the color green, loves chocobos, and uses twin pistols.

The only thing missing is grape drank.

Guns have very low base attack power but they ignore the enemies defense. So if you fight any heavilly armoured enemy guns will do regular damage. Which kicks arse against those turtles and the ultimate gun can be acquired rather early in the game.

But for your set up of fran, vaan, and balthier.

I recommend:

Balthier: One handed sword and shield for decent power and defense, or
go spears for power raw power. Don't use axes.(2 handed swords are available late game and you can use them also if you want).
If you go spears wear heavy armour for extra attack power and high defense.
If you go 1h swords then light armour maybe.

Vaan: Either have him as a ranger + support magick, or a Thief + support magic.
Wear light armour for speed boost, ranged and knife weapons power comes a lot from speed.
And with that either bows or knives(fast up close attacks but more dangerous).
Green magick such as haste, shell, protect and brave effects are must haves.

Fran: Your black/white mage,
Mystic armour for magick boosting and staves for more magick power.
However if you want to save mp at times then give her a bow, especially if you make vaan a thief.

Thanks for the specific suggestions Hyper, and especially for telling me how guns work. I'll be tweaking my party soon with the information you shared in mind.

Early on in the game, I just had everyone equip one-handed swords or daggers. Mage masher was quite awesome, with a silence on hit effect, and the next dagger up randomly OHKO's foes.

Now, I'm pretty much sticking to hammers and axes. It's pretty damn funny to go from hitting 1500 to hitting 20 the next strike. I'm not sure if it's statistically the best, but to hell with statistics, I like the damn weapons!

I just escaped from the Shiva airship and went and stole a Deathbringer sword from Ithuno. I had planned on just hanging around there and stealing one for everyone but once it took more than hour for my first steal to succeed I said fuck it. Now I have to grind the LP so Vaan can use it.
