Wrote it yesterday, due today. Actually managed to write over 1500 words which was the goal. I couldn't find my instruction-paper so I kind of improvised, all I knew was that I had to write about creative violence >_> Normally I'd let my mom read it and make comments, but she just went to bed and said she was too tired. So read and make comments if you feel like it <_< Violence Isabelle Simonsson, 06NVN A couple of weeks ago I watched ”V for Vendetta”, directed by James McTeigue and written by Andy and Larry Wachowski. The main character, called V, was talking about using violence for revenge and for freedom for the people. The movie was situated in the United Kingdoms in the future and a lot of things were different from today’s UK. Freedom of speech no longer existed and the people lived under complete control by the government. The government claimed that it were precautions to prevent terrorism and other violence. Only a few people dared to stand up against the government, and often they got caught and executed or locked up in prison. V was one of those who couldn’t stand to see his country in such a dictatorship. On the 5th of November he wanted everything to change; he was going to blow up the Houses of Parliament in London. Exactly one year before that he destroys the Old Bailey, a famous court building. This opened up the eyes of the people and he also sent a message to everyone calling them to the Houses of Parliament on November 5th. No one really knew who V was because he’s always wearing a Guy Fawkes-mask, which kind of made him even more famous and scary. When I watched this movie I started thinking about violence being used for good things. I think everyone can agree with that violence is a solution for almost everything. But it’s not always the best or even a good solution. V had a dream, a goal, and he had a plan to make it happen. On midnight he was going to bring chaos to the country and hopefully restore Great Britain to its former glory, with all the power to the people. No people would get harmed, since it’d happen during midnight. I think that in V’s case it was the right thing to do. Even though it’s just a movie it made me realise that violence can be good sometimes, as long as no innocent people are killed or harmed. V attacked the source of the problem directly, which was a good thing. Most leaders in the world don’t seem to think about that everything they do in war and politics affects millions of people most of the time. I believe there are better ways to solve a conflict than to use violence and take it out on civilians. If we take World War II as an example, the US dropped two atom bombs in Nagasaki and Hiroshima. Hundreds of thousands of innocent humans were killed because of it. I refuse to believe it was the only effective solution for USA. Sure, Japan was aiming for Asian, and eventually world, domination, but murder couldn’t be the only way to stop them. It was the leaders who should have been punished, not the people. Anyway, the operation was successful and Japan surrendered, and maybe that’s all that matters to some people… Shockingly many humans died during World War II. There are no real numbers, but most believe around 60 millions died; 40 millions of them were civilians. Many people died for a cause during that time, but I don’t think many people can figure out a positive thing about the Holocaust. Six million Jews were murdered mainly because of their religious beliefs. Around 60 years after the genocide we can’t understand how it could happen, and I can’t think of a purpose for it. We just finished learning about the Jewish religion in religion class, and the book said that the Jews believe that everything bad that happens in the world has a greater meaning to it: everything happens for a reason. I don’t see how any Jew can try and explain the reason of the Holocaust. They were blamed for everything that had went wrong in Germany, they were tortured and in most cases even killed and they could hardly live a normal life. What good could possibly have turned out from that? During the American Civil War many people died as well. The war is most known for the debate of whether slavery should be legal or not and this time the war led to something as important as the end of slavery. Still, there were a lot of casualties and you can’t help but wonder if there might have been a better way to end the conflict. Approximately 1 030 000 people died due to the war; 630 000 of those were soldiers. An estimated four million black slaves were freed. I think this is a quite good example of violence leading to great progress in the world, even though people got killed for it. I’ve now talked about four different, yet they’re also quite similar, cases of violence in both the fictional and the real world. It’s easy for me to sit here and complain without providing any solutions. What could have been done instead that would have decreased the casualties? If I were put in the leader’s position, how would I have acted? I think I would have tried to be more diplomatic and use communication as much as possible. In the USA – Japan conflict they could have bombed some government buildings instead, and they didn’t have to use nuclear weapons. They wanted to threaten Japan, which could have been done in several less harmful and about as effective ways. The same thing goes for the Southern vs. Northern US battles. They could have spared many lives just by communicating with each other more. When it comes to the Holocaust the other countries that were aware of the murders should have reacted. When I read about the European part of World War II during history class I read more about how everyone wanted to stop Hitler from taking over the world, than I read about stopping Jews from getting murdered. I mean, they must have noticed something wasn’t right. Millions of Jews don’t just disappear from the earth’s surface. If we compare V’s struggle in “V for Vendetta”, the World War II with its USA – Japan war and the Holocaust and the American Civil War the two of those which ended up having the most positive turnouts are “V for Vendetta” and the American Civil war. There were much damage but also great results; V freed the United Kingdoms from its government and slavery ended in America. USA – Japan was quite successful too, but with a little too many casualties in my opinion while the Holocaust hardly brought anything good to anyone who deserved it. Torture is another act of violence that’s supposed to be creative. It’s not used in most countries nowadays, at least not officially. But in the past I believe that as good as every country in the world used torture as punishment and/or for interrogation, to get information. Jesus got crucified for claiming to be Messiah; he was tortured and died on a cross. That punishment was pretty common those days. Not very long ago in Sweden there was a death punishment for bestiality. Now it’s almost not even illegal here. I honestly believe we need harder prison sentences in Sweden, not only for bestiality, but also for child and animal abuse. I have read in several newspapers lately that the amount of convicts falling back into the crime path after getting out of jail is extremely high. We need to do something about it and I think giving out harder punishments would help tremendously. Even though it’s not really a violent act to be in prison, you get your freedom taken away from you and that’s a threat that should prevent people from breaking the law. As many people know, war is quite often a battle between two or more religions. In Israel, for example, Jews and Muslims have been fighting for several hundred years because they both think Israel belongs to them. People have been dying, just because of this, on both sides and they should ask themselves: Is this really worth it? I can understand their religion is important to them, but is it worth going to war and dying for? That’s one of the forms of violence that I’ll never understand, harming and threatening others because some holy book is telling them that some land belongs to them. Like one of my favourite rock bands Muse stated in their song Map of the Problematique: “Why can’t we see, when we bleed we bleed the same?” We are forgetting that in the end we’re all humans. In conclusion I think that there is such a thing as creative violence, but I also think most of the violence is more destructive than creative. We shouldn’t rely on violence too much to solve our problems and I’d prefer that we’d use communication and diplomacy instead in conflicts. If we really have to use violence it should be used carefully and we should avoid hurting innocents. I have mainly used Wikipedia.org as a source for looking up the amount of casualties during the wars and for looking up the director and writers for “V for Vendetta”, which is a movie I recommend. 1529 words Edited by Terra_Ice, Monday 8-12-2008, 22:03.

Yeah, I know. I just opened up with two big cups of strong coffee and started writing as much as I could. I wasn't really in the mood since I had been to a metal concert the night before and my bf is being a jerk. I suck at essay opening, got any suggestions on what to think about when writing it? (btw, I'm Swedish so our teachers practically orgasms and give you top grade if you make no grammar mistakes and don't use the same kind of words all the time) |

Dropping the atomic bombs on Hiroshima and Nagasaki arguably saved millions of Japanese lives. Most of em would've fought to the death if their homeland was invaded. But the essay lacks cohesiveness. It's hard to tell what exactly the paper is about. |

A few things I would like to add. It's been a while since I've been a student in a classroom but here are a couple of things I picked up on. First and most importantly, I'm surprised you wrote an essay on V for Vendetta without discussing the real Guy Fawkes and the Gunpowder Plot at all. I also noticed heavy use of colons and semi-colons which was something I was always taught to avoid if at all possible. Other than those two general things, I copied and pasted some things below that should've been changed. ------------- The government claimed that it were precautions - Reword Exactly one year before that he destroys the Old Bailey - Destroys should be destroyed to stick with the past tense. Most leaders in the world don’t seem to think about that everything - Reword but most believe around 60 millions died; 40 millions of them - Millions should just be million I’ve now talked about four different, yet they’re also quite similar, cases - No need for the commas, should've just been "...talked about for different yet similar cases..." If we compare V’s struggle in “V for Vendetta”, the World War II with its USA – Japan war and the Holocaust and the American Civil War - Commas throughout the rest of the list instead of the extra 'and'. V freed the United Kingdoms from its government and slavery ended in America. - Define what or who ended slavery in America as in this excerpt it looks like you're saying V ended slavery in America after freeing the UK. I think this is a quite good example of violence leading to great progress in the world, even though people got killed for it. - Got should be were. I used 'got' a lot in my essays when another word would have better served the structure, and I heard many a negative thing from my teacher because of it. But in the past I believe that as good as every country in the world used torture as punishment and/or for interrogation, to get information. - Reword Jesus got crucified - Got -> was lately that the amount of convicts falling back into the crime path after getting out of jail is extremely high. - The word relapsing would do away with everything after the word convicts up until the word is. giving out harder punishments - Harsher instead of harder In conclusion I think - Comma after In conclusion ------------- Those were the things that stuck out to me. But remember I am the product of the US school system so take what I say with a grain of salt. Over all it was a good essay. I hope you get a positive grade for your work. Yeah, because I didn't know what it was going to be about >_> The teacher just gave us a paper and told us that we couldn't do it in school, but had to do it at home. I read the first paragraph, then put it away and when I was going to start writing I couldn't find it so I improvised through the whole essay. <_< My friend wrote about child abuse. Two hours before we had to hand in our essays we found out we were supposed to write about "Creative violence" so we just re-wrote some parts and added whatever we could think of. Btw, can I get in trouble for posting it here? Quite many teachers at my school use google etc and searches parts of our handed in essays to make sure we didn't copy it from somewhere.. Thanks, Z. I'm so sick of school right now so I'm surprised I even managed to finish it, lol. I'll think of those things next time I write an English essay. Thank god it's winter break soon. |

Lmao, here is what my friend added in her essay when she found out what it really was about: So to the thing that’s if you could use child abuse to something good? I really don’t think it could, because who thinks that? The only good that can come out of child abuse is if you look back in the past, when the boundary wasn’t very strong between the transitions to abuse. But I don’t mean the worst kind of abuse, I mean more like I said before, a father or mother who raised their son for example, they hit him on the cheek if he did something bad, so that he think that next time he thinks about doing something bad he can remember that they will hit him on the cheek. And the good thing that’s come from moderate abuse is if the parents don’t cross the line to abuse, and that the boy gets toughened and by that he maybe can control himself better and if he is toughened he can make it through the military better. And another thing I can come up with is, the children who gets abused, is that they grow up and becomes mental – sick, and they need to go to a psychologist, and that is good for the psychologist, because then they get to practice and they will need more psychologist, so that leads to less unemployed people. |

I didn't base it on a movie, I just wrote about my thoughts about it because I thought it suited quite well into the subject >_> And who said anything about writing it seriously? ;O Our teachers barely care about what we write about as long as we show them that we can express ourselves in English.
