Let me tell you all a little story...(tl'dr version at the bottom)

I'm browsing the internet trying to find a simple song, you see. When I think I've found the song, I download it to my computer. However, nothing happens, and the command prompt shows up about once or twice, then goes away.

I shrug this off and get on Youtube to look for the song, when I notice my computer begin to act strangely. Getting worried, I decide to hit the killswitch and restart my computer. Guess what I come back to?

VIRUS ALERT VIRUS ALERT WARNING YOUR COMPUTER HAS BEEN INFECTED WITH SPYWARE

And every known "antivirus" software in the fucking world it seems is coming to my supposed aid. I've got programs installed for apparently no reason and scanning all this shit and telling me to take action.

Of course, I see that all this action requires me to register their software with money. Unfortunately for them, I'm not that stupid...or so I thought.

I keep trying to work my away around the problems for about an hour or so, but little I did managed to solve anything. I finally caved and bought one of the antivirus programs (AntiVirus XP 2008) for what I thought was only $50. WRONG. I got charged for some stupid bundle deal and had a grand total of $110.

Yes, $110. So it must've done something to help me, right? Nope.

By the time I had realized what I had done, it was too late. What can I say? I was too scared about what had happened to my computer and needed something to turn to. There's no excuse for my stupidity, really. So I finally swallowed my pride and did the smart thing, the very first thing I should've done when all this shit happened; call in my stepdad.

He had a lot of knowledge of dealing with these viruses over the years, and explained to me what had been happening. He told me that all the antivirus software was actually the viruses themselves. We went through all the data files that had been created by the viruses and destroyed them. We also deleted all the internet cookies stored on my computer and destroyed those too. Any file, any piece of data that had the word "virus" or "antivirus" was destroyed with some effort.

We then decided to install some basic security on my computer to try to prevent this from happening again, namely ZoneAlarm and Spybot: Search and Destroy. However, it's not all's well that ends well yet.

Later, when I'm browsing the internet while my stepdad had already went to bed, one of the viruses reappears on my computer. The Vista Antivirus 2008 program, which I had actually got done researching, among others. The sites I went to told me that it's a very difficult and dangerous virus to get rid of, at least manually. By this time, I'm pretty damn annoyed, so...

SUCK ON MY SPYBOT PROGRAM BITCHES!

I fired up Spybot, let it run through my computer, it found that Vista Antivirus was indeed still causing trouble, among other little viruses we missed. Time to end this. "Fix selected problems", sit back, relax, and smile as all the viruses and malware are erased for good, one by one. All except one. Some small little thing that I can't get rid of...I'll leave it alone for now. I'll learn how to get to it eventually, mark my words.

Now, one more matter to take care of. I'm getting my money back. So after a couple of emails and one very irritating phone call with a man with such a heavy accent I can't understand what he's saying (even though I was pretty clear I wanted nothing more than a refund), I finally managed to get him to send me a refund notice. I've sent it back, but knowing those asses, it probably won't go through and I've been conned out of $110 for good. Have I told my parents about this? No, they'll flip. Luckily, payday is next week, so it'll cover what I've lost.

So, there's my story of last night. What have I learned? Never, NEVER trust any program that pops up on your computer without your permission. And always follow your first instinct (which for me, would've been calling my stepdad). You know, I think I finally know what I want to do in college now. This whole affair has pissed me off so bad that I want to go into the field of computers now. My motivation? To learn how to prevent and stop viruses, and to catch the fuckwads responsible for creating them and scamming innocent people.

tl;dr version: Viruses got on my comp, I got scammed into buying "antivirus software" out of my fear, may have lost $110 for good instead, this might be a sign of what I'd like to study during my time in college.

Someone should probably turn this epic tale into a short movie... it would sweep the Cannes film festival for sure.

More on topic: Never had a virus hit my computer ever. I find the basic firewall and even the 'sucky' AVG is more than enough to protect me from my own stupidity, furthermore, I am nothing short of paranoid about downloading anything of the internet.

It seems my battle with the viruses is still not over.

I keep getting strange pop-ups and keep getting redirected to sites urging me to download anti-spyware. Ran Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware program and got a few things erased, and some had to be erased by restarting my computer. Although I can restart my computer, trying to switch to my preferred internet connection keeps giving me the blue screen of death.

I'm gonna try the connection one more time, and then if it doesn't work, run Spybot again...

EDIT: Alright, got to my normal connection without crashing. Now, time to end this crap once and for all.

And at this point the credits will roll and if it is a success the sequel will be shown at the Sundance film festival next year.

You think this could top even The Dark Knight?

On-topic: Everything SEEMS in order...no pop-ups or redirects yet. Am I finally in the clear? I hope so.

Never buy anti-virus etc. All the best programs can be gotten for free. Just make sure it's legit, before you download anything.

You need the best antivirus:

You obviously need the best weapon available:

And you obviously need something to scare away the viruses and ads:

But with all that you get a double defense!
