So I am thinking about getting a 360

Basically, when I get paid again in 2 weeks, it will be a better-than-normal paycheck, since I am getting a pay raise along with it. So I was thinking of picking up a 360, and pushing the whole "building a PC" thing back another 6 months or so. But I had a few questions:

1. Any really difference between the Premium and Elite versions? The extra HD stuff with the Elite doesn't affect me a whole lot, as I currently do not have an HD TV, and know nothing about HD cables and shit. But is the 20 GB harddrive too little? Or is the 120 GB harddrive way too excessive?

2. Recommend me some games. I plan on getting Dead Rising as one of my first games, along with GTA4 and possible Gears of War. I was also looking at DMC4, the new Tales game coming out in August, and Rock Band in the future (probably near the end of summer). Any other suggestions? Would anyone hear play the Gears Co-op again with me if I picked it up (one of the main reasons I would get it).

3. Is Xbox Live worth it? There are some good games on the Arcade that interest me (Geometry Wars, SSFII, Castlevania, TMNT The Arcade Game, The Penny Arcade Game), but I am not sure how often I would play online games with people. Unlike PC games, it seems that Xbox 360 gamers stop playing new games online after a few weeks.

4. I have also being toying with getting a PS3, mainly because of MGS4. Any reason to get a PS3 over a 360 besides MGS4?

5. Any place I can get the Wireless Adapter cheap? I am STILL pissed that every other console of this generation, including the PSP and DS, which came out before the 360, have builtin adaptors, but with the 360 I need to drop $100 for one. I smell bullshit from that.

1. Depends on how much you plan on downloading
2. Mass Effect? Oblivion, CoD4, Halo, Bioshock, Crackdown, Saints Row, Assassin's Creed...should probably just rent some of those.
3. Depends on if you wanna play multiplayer a lot, I think you can download whatever you want off the marketplace without paying for Live.
4. Not really sure yet, but they'll probably both be worth owning eventually.
5. Maybe off Amazon or Ebay.

Well, I plan on downloading the games I mentioned above, and maybe a few others. And some (but not all) of the rock band songs when I get Rock Band. Between those, game saves, and installs, will that take up more than 20 GBs of memory?

And how much does Xbox Live Gold cost again?

Not sure how much it'll take, and Gold is 5 bucks a month or something like that.

I'll sell you a used refurbished, modded one, with the warranty still intact.
I'll also send you whatever games you want for $0.50 a piece (DL-DVDs are expensive)

I hate to see friends paying $60 for a game <_<

Gold is $50 a year, so just under $5 a month.

I believe you have a laptop Seto, you can use that as the wireless adaoter for free, OR buy the original Xbox one, which works perfectly. Im not sure if the range is worse, but I just used it across my big house to play GRID for a week and didn't see a single spot of lag.

EDIT: Also, you can pack a regular hard drive in place of the 20GB, it's alot cheaper. Also, if you have an external drive, that's a good bet too.

Star Ocean 4 is coming to the 360, if that's your cup o' tea. As well as a shitload of other JRPGs.

Heh, if you buy a PC, you can play most of those with better controls and play them online for free.

1. You're going to want an HD tv when you're playing 360, unfortunately. I settle with using my monitor and a VGA cable, but a regular TV's going seriously leave you hanging. I can't even read half the text in Ace Combat 6 without. But you don't really need HDMI. 20GB has been enough for me (I actually got a Core, bought the HDD later) but that's running out quickly. Mostly because I have Psychonauts and a bunch of demo games on there.

2. These are games I have and like, most have demos for download on XBL, but of course your genre appreciation may vary:
Call of Duty 4 (awesome single player campaign, and I love the RPGish multiplayer leveling.
Mass Effect (fun RPG)
Ace Combat 6 (not the best AC game, but still very good. And pretty.)
Burnout Paradise (I like it.)
Grand Theft Auto IV (Good fun)
Assassin's Creed (ok, I don't actually own this one, but it's worth a rent (and short enough))
Bioshock (see above)
Crackdown (see above. You won't even drive. Just jump across half an island. WHEE!)
Geometry Wars (I'm sure you've heard about or seen this)
Rez HD (VERY YES.)
Psychonauts (if you haven't played it before)

3. You don't need a Gold account to purchase XBLA games. Just for multiplayer. I think it's worth it, though.

4. Free multiplayer? Blu-ray player? Oh wait, no HD-TV. Er...

5. Yes, it is BS. I got one anyways. =/

I've been meaning to mod my 360 since I finally got a computer with SATA, but I'm kinda hoping it dies and I can send it in for a new one first. Then again, I heard you can buy the warranty seal somewhere, need to find out about that...

You can get the Warranty sticker off with a blowdrier.
There are also ways to force a RRoD after that.

If you have any modding questions feel free to ask.

By the way, make sure you have a usable SATA cable, they're cheap. You also need a SATA card with a specific chipset for some flashes.

Thanks LoR. I currently have a standard 20' TV, and I was thinking about getting a 20' or so HD TV at the end of summer, after seeing what my funds are like. I figure that it is only a few hundred dollars, right?

And Wise, how easily is it to use the laptop as an ad hoc wireless adaptor? If I can get it to work, I will be very happy.

And BTW, I am not considering a PS3 anymore, cuz my housemate got the MGS4 bundle last week.

you should be able to use the laptop for wireless fairly easily. just connect the laptop and 360 by Ethernet cable, then under my connections bridge your laptops internet connection with your 360 connection.

also if you go HD you might want a bigger set. I don't think 26" were much more in cost than a 20" anyways. you dont seem to be in a hurry for one either, so it might be worth it to wait for a sale too.
