I'll just copy the facebook not I wrote, it's more detailed than my PotD post. There'll be names in it though, so...blar blarh blarh. May 12th, the day that I saw CAKE live in concert. As you may know, Joey, Krista, Jared, Jake, Sue, Hauke, and I all went to see Cake at the Victoria Curling Club. I thought I'd write up that nights events in one place for the sake of it. After waiting in line for a while, we get into the curling club. We get frisked (Hauke - "Can I be frisked by that girl over there?") and then we entered the room with the stage. It's nice n big. So we all go and buy our Cake T-shirts (duh). We see the other T-shirts, they're for the opening band, they're called the "Paper Lions". Never heard of em. So we make our way to the front, there's maybe...one or two people in front of all of us. We take a bunch of pictures and whatever. We start chatting to the two guys beside us. I think our first conversation went like this... "Got any joints?" -them "No, sorry man." -us "Let me rephrase that, you'd be really cool if you had joints." -them Anyways, they were pretty damn funny guys. The Paper Lions came on shortly after. And they were AMAZING. They had the coolest flipping clothes ever (suits and vests and other old fashioned stuff). They were from PEI, had epic beards and good god...the drummer was amazing. During one song, they all switched instruments mid song and the drummer played the most INSAANE bongo solo I have ever ever ever seen. He did some other crazy stuff with just his hands on the set, then one stick, two, three, four. He was incredible. And the lead singer's dance moves? Wow. Plus, he got right in the crowd and jammed with the guitarist right up front within the crowd. They were incredible. PLUS, Krista got one of their DRUMSTICKS. *ASPLODE* Now the Paper Lions have played for an hour. They leave to generous applause (much deserved) and we start to wait for Cake. The tech guys come on. All of a sudden, we recognize Ken English, Jessica's husband. We're like OMGWTFBBQ. We start yelling out heads off at him. He eventually acknowledged us >_>. That was epic. After about another half hour, Cake is finally ready to play. Everyone's going insane, my voice is already shot from the Paper Lions, but I proceed to sing along word for word. The opened with "Frank Sinatra", one of my faves. Here's the set list... Frank Sinatra Arco Arena Jolene Comfort Eagle Love You Madly War Pigs Comanche Haze Of Love Stickshifts and Safetybelts Guitar Fried is a Four Letter Word Wheels Carbon Monoxide The Distance Short Skirt/Long Jacket Mexico Sheep Go To Heaven Not the exact order, but an extremely good set list. The audience participation was excellent, with the back up vocals to "Jolene", the na na na na naa nahhh's of "Short Skirt/Long Jacket" and the chorus of "Sheep Go to Heaven" (Sheep got to heaven, goats go to hell). John McCrea told some of his usually dry jokes, his singing was spot-on (dead-pan as usual) while his acoustic guitar was mellow and wow, Xan McCurdy's guitar was amazing, Gabriel Nelson grooved on the bass, Paulo Baldi as great on drums, and Vince Di Fiore...he was absolutly epic on trumpet and keyboard. Not to mention John playing the vibraslap...classic. Eventually, everyone beside us was smoking up and whatnot. We managed, but that wasn't nearly as annoying as some of those beside us. Some chick who was about 4'10" bashed through, proclaiming that everything smelt like armpits (obviously woman, look at your height) and that she was too short to see anything. There was a 400 pound woman who's tummy was bashing against my ass a lot of the time, and Hauke kept getting moved aside by her girth. There was a bunch of 30 year old party people past their prime grinding it up beside us. So, we would've much prefered our pot smoking buddies, however idiotic they were. THE BEST PART OF THE NIGHT. After the encore (deafening), Cake came back out and played Short Skirt/Long Jacket. They then proclaimed that they were going to give away the tree that was onstage as they always do. John was hilarious... "Anyone know what kind of tree this is? No, it's not *blah blah blah, whatever people said*, it's an apple tree. It grows many types of apples. Man has fucked with this tree." It was a grafted tree, and he gave a bit of a speech about how man doesn't have any hope on this earth as we're ruining it and whatnot. So, everyone was clamouring for the damn tree. Everyone pushed me to the front. Now, I'm extremely glad to have friends like mine. You guys were...beyond words. Joey hoisted me up, Krista supported my ass (what?) and raised me above the crowd. Hauke bashed past the large woman, and stuck his head between my crotch and hoisted me up on his shoulders. By now, I was face to face from John McCrea, with maybe seven feet seperating our faces. He then asked a skill testing question for the tree, he asked a name of a British General that had done battle during the (I think this was the war he asked about...?) American Revolution (wait, that makes no sense, it's the American Revolution...). Joey told me to say "General Wolfe". I politely raised my hand, and FINALLY, John acknowledge me. "Hey there Mr. Tall guy, got an answer? First of all, what's your name?" "Arek." "Alright, got an answer?" "General Wolfe!" "Uhh *looks at Vince*. What battles was he in" "Uhh *looks at Joey*, he was in three battles <_<!" "I don't know about that, how about..." Then he moved on. Once again, thanks to my friends...that was the moment of my life. Everyone in the crowd was shouting "COME ON, GENERAL WOLFE". A woman named Elizabeth answered with a different answer and won the tree. She picked Sheep Go to Heaven for them to play as their last song. It was really awesome. So yeah, thanks so much to everyone for that :D Greatest concert ever, I really hope to see them live at least a couple more times in my life.

If General Wolfe had been the correct answer, as it should have been, and you had gotten to pick their closing song, what would you have picked? |

That's difficult. Sheep go to Heaven is a great audience song as everyone starts chanting along with the whole chorus. Buuuttt, I probably would've gone with "Rock N Roll Lifestyle". I would've considered "Cool Blue Reason", but I don't know if that's a oft-used concert piece for them. I enjoy it a lot though. |

Actually, only Rock N Roll Lifestyle if they played the ending with the whole "You're drinking what they're selling..." part. But they don't usually do that part in concert for some odd reason. |

What if you got everything you ever wanted, and it still sucked?
|
I'm honestly jealous. For all the shows i've been too, CAKE has always eluded my grasp. i always end up a day late, and a buck short whenever they play my area, which is rarely. |

Damn, try your hardest, they put on an excellent show. You gotta be on the ball when it comes to them, by the time there's something in the paper about them playing, they're sold out. |
