any Megadeth album over any pre-Fuel Metallica album? thats a...bold statement. Dave got tossed out of Metallica for being a total fucktard. then again, Trent Reznor got thrown out of Pigface for similar reasons. can't wait to see how the list wraps up... *Nelson Muntz Laughs @ Ecto* you noticed that too, Waka? |

#02 The Smashing Pumpkins Siamese Dream (1993) "Fool enough to almost be it. Cool enough to not quite see it." ![]() Professional Reviews: All Music Guide: 4 1/2 out of 5 stars. Rolling Stone: 3 1/2 out of 5 stars. Top 3 songs on this album 1. Mayonaise 2. Geek USA 3. Spaceboy Being one of two bands to have multiple albums on this list, Corgan and the beloved pumpkins placed a choke hold on the second place spot with this, what I believe is their absolute best album. This, the second release from the Smashing Pumpkins, was gifted to me originally by my good friend Joe (who is ten-fold the Smashing Pumpkins fanatic I am) on a burnt CD, and that flimsy Sony CD-R is where it all began- the better part of my "musical life" spent singing the praises of not just Billy but this album in particular. Though it seems everyone favors Mellon Collie, Siamese Dream is the way I wish to remember the Smashing Pumpkins forever. Not as raw as Gish (in fact the CD might be a bit over-tweaked) but not as broad as Mellon Collie and the Infinite Sadness. The opening drum roll of Cherub Rock is enough to get my feet bouncing in anticipation, thinking of summers gone by. Billy Corgan was at his most egotistical during the recording of Siamese Dream, ruling the mixing and dubbing of the album with an ironfist, sometimes even dubbing Iha's tracks with his own guitar playing. They had also moved in an attempt to cut their drummer Jimmy Chamberlin from his drug connections, but that was a short lived cure for the situation. According to Wikipedia, "After one incident where the drummer had disappeared for two or three days, Corgan "put the hammer down", according to Butch Vig, and had Chamberlin perform the drum part for "Cherub Rock" until his hands bled." Stealing another snippet, Billy was quoted by Spin magazine as saying, "You know, I gave them a year and a half to prepare for this record. I'm surrounded by these people who I care about very much, yet they continue to keep failing me." Perhaps they were in their own way, but what came out of all of that is a perfect recording. I feel I already praised the musicianship of the band enough in the Gish write-up that I am going to forego repeating it yet again, and instead will elaborate on the mention I gave to the story of Billy pissing seamonkeys (which I mistakenly labeled as seahorses) in the blurb about Nine Inch Nail's the Fragile. In fifth grade I was reading the Marilyn Manson auto-biography "Long Hard Road Out of Hell" and it contained (among many others) an interesting, funny little story about the head of the Pumpkin council. Apparently during a party one night Trent Reznor of Nine Inch Nails tricked Billy into snorting a line of white powder that he thought was cocaine. It was actually the dust from a water purifier package of seamonkeys that hadn't been added to water yet. Billy claimed that the following day he pissed out seamonkeys. While I'm sure his claim isn't plausible, but it's funny to think of. According to the book Corgan also had his own personal wing in Courtney Love's mansion. I would also like to add that it was really frustrating to pick out just three songs from this album, and in the process I actually uploaded half the CD before I settled on the ones above. Geek USA for Chamberlin's excellent drumming, Mayonaise for being an all around great song, and Billy's ballad to his waterhead brother, Spaceboy because it's different than the other two. Now for a slight change up to the albums that just missed getting on the list. For this entry and the number one entry I'm going to highlight albums that don't appear on my list simply because they were released before 1990 or after 2000. I will stick with this template for the final entry of my favorite albums of the 90's list. I'm also going to edit in a new blurb in the number 20 entry to replace The Killer's Sam's Town so that the 90-00 theme is intact throughout. ![]() 1. The Traveling Wilburys - Vol.1 (1988) I think this is yet another album that Ecto picked out near the beginning of the topic, and it was in fact on the main list until I re-arranged it to fit the theme. I don't remember where I originally had it chartered, probably somewhere around 7. The Traveling Wilburys was a supergroup that truly lived up to the term. Featuring George Harrison (The Beatles - oh wait, everyone already knew that,) Jeff Lynne (Electric Light Orchestra), Bob Dylan, Tom Petty, and the incomparable Roy Orbison. Looking at the line-up it's hard to decide whether it's an actual band or a blueprint for the Mt. Rushmore of rock. Roy Orbison is probably one of a very select few that could give Maynard a run for his money as my favorite vocalist of all time. ![]() 2. GWAR - War Party (2004) I wanted so badly to include GWAR on my list just so I would get to write about them, but I stuck with the premise because no other GWAR album can capture my attention from beginning to end quite like War Party. Less "God What Awful Racket" and more heavy metal goodness, ten unforgettable (if you're into this sort of thing) tracks packed full of laughs and gore await you on this album. The GWAR universe is far too massive to run down in one little blurb, but this album continued the heavier direction of the band visited in 2001's Violence Has Arrived. Bring Back the Bomb, Decay of Grandeur, and Bonesnapper get my gold stars of acknowledgement. |

Is it really bold if it's personal opinion? I wish I had a logical reason I could give to explain why I prefer Megadeth over Metallica, but I don't. That's not to say I would take Megadeth's worst over Metallica's best, that would just be stupid.
If I could hear the first five seconds of each song I would be able to help you out, but seeing as that's not possible I'll just say if your CD starts out with a song that has short drum bursts and lyrics involving the police and machines you have the proper release that starts with Feiticeira and closes like it is supposed to. If your CD begins with a rap/rock song that has lyrics about going back to school then you have the abomination that was tampered with, but after that one track the tracklist is the exact same, with each being shifted down a spot of course. Let me know your feelings about the album once you've listened to the whole thing. Especially any favorite songs, should you find one that tickles your fancy. I'd also like to take the time to thank everyone again that has been reading. I was doing this mainly to amuse myself but I've enjoyed the little comments/discussions that spurred up every now and then, and I wish there was more musical discussion taking place on Project Mayhem. I'll be back to unveil number one sometime today. |

well, i'll say this about Megadeth (egad Meth). when i was at Woodstock '99, i sat thru Alanis Morrisette and Jewel because it wasn't worth walking the 1.5-2 miles between the stages for Godsmack and Megadeth. Metallica was closing out that night and i wasn't fighting my way back up front for that after surviving the mosh pit for Korn the night before. (several people were trampled to death during that set.) also, the 'Wilburies were fucking made of win, and I've always loved Tom Petty. |

Petty's "Wildflowers" Album is one of the 3 most depressing albums i own, right behind NIN's "Pretty Hate Machine" and Pink Floyd's "the Wall". then again, Wildflowers was written during a bitter divorce with his wife of 30 years, and it devastated him. incidentally, Metallica had played from 10PM till almost 3:30AM at Woodstock '99. what a set! almost the whole catalog as of that point in time. on another note Z, ever see TooL live? they're unfuckingbelievable live. so hard to get tickets, so hard... |

Fuck no, I have never really been to many concerts because I'm in the middle of bumfuck Tennessee and I never had a friend that was willing to venture out of state with me to see anything. In my area I've seen Kid Rock (lawl) Static-X and Powerman 5000. Late last year I finally traveled out of state to see Les Claypool, though. At the end of the month ZZ Top is coming through here. I guess I don't really have an excuse for never having gone to Bonnaroo which is held quite close to where I live every year. I'm pretty sure Tool has played there at least once. But I really would kill to see them live. I imagine it would be quite a fucking experience. |

if i ever see Kid Rock face to face i'm punching him upside the head for his little stunt@WS99. he was the one that got everyone throwing shit towards the stage the first day. funny on day 1 when its empty water bottles, not so funny by day 3 when it was igloo coolers and lawn chairs. also the trash within 100yds of the stages got to being knee to waist deep from that. i did play the Devil Without a Cause album to death that year. Bobby has mostly disappointed me since though. |

if you ever do see TooL live, DO NOT get floor-level seats. you'll miss half the show. the stage itself was covered in monitors. saw 'em on the Lateralis tour. on another note Z, Whiskey Jay's originally from Murfreesboro. he tells a great story about surviving a Pantera mosh pit in Nashville when he was like 15. i always though most of Pantera was meh, but i've always loved their album names... |

lulz well even though my post WAS a joke, it's still not the same context. while i just attacked you for not liking a band, what i was really talking about earlier was trying to take over someone else's topic with their own tastes. but whatever, it's all in good fun. on a more serious note, i actually do think you would like the radiohead song "Paranoid Android" as it is very reminiscent of all that prog rock that you like and it would please me to no end if you gave it a listen. |

also, good writeup i would have also found it very difficult to pick the top three songs from Siamese Dream, but i think Mayonaise is number one for sure. i think i got all the tracks sorted out and yeah, it did have the rap-rock song you were talking about so i just deleted it and put the rest of the album on my computer. i only listened to half of it, but the second track (digital bath i think?) was pretty good. i'll give it some more in-depth listens later. and damn i am good. siamese dream and wilburys, can i call them or what? |

my only philisophical dilemma with 'Punkins is how over-marketed their material was. like one step shy of Matchbox 20. every radio cut on their albums was played to death in a week. don't get it twisted, Billy and crew had talent, i even liked Iha's solo album and wondered what happened to Zwan. the track he did on the Lost Highway Soundtrack was great. hell, anybody that enjoyed Z's list should have that soundtrack. What other album has Bowie, Nin/Trent, Corgan, and Manson contributing? |

this is totally off topic, but has this board largely, as a group suddenly forgotten how to rub one out? its like for the past month or so a fair number of people here have been...jumpy. i'm largely a prick to everyone, so that no one is ever that shocked by the things i say, but there's been a fair amount of bipolarism and Tourette's going around lately... |

I have noticed this as well. I am assuming people are stressing over finals or some shit. its not like people are starting fights for no reason, just that people are jumping over the "slightly irritated" stage and going straight to "PMSing bitch". honestly, none of it has been directed at me so I dont really care.

Pardon me for not responding before now. After I made my last comment I finished watching I Am Legend (finally) and passed the fuck out. What day of 'stock 99 was it that Limp Bizkit finally encited the riot? I remember wanting to go to and talking to my friend about wanting to go but neither of us could drive at the time so we were shit out of luck. And though I lawl'd at my seeing of Kid Rock live, I have to admit that I also played the hell out of Devil Without a Cause. Unfortunately I didn't see him until he had released two or three more CDs so his live show wasn't even relying on the material that I actually liked.
They do have some undeniably great album names. Far Beyond Driven, Vulgar Display of Power, Great Southern Trendkill... god bless 'em for that.
Thank you Mr. Ecto. And I'm glad you deleted Back to School from your computer because it is a goddamn travesty. Even compared to their older shit, it just sounded so fucking...corporate? Which, I guess when it comes down to it, it was.
>_> I liked Matchbox 20 and don't really fall into the whole slump where once something is overplayed on the radio it begins detracting from my enjoyment of the albums. Probably due to the fact that I never really listened to the radio. But you bring up a good question... what the fuck did happen to Zwan? I bought the CD and had a little sticker of them and everything and then...nothing. The Lost Highway soundtrack was a pretty good fucking album and it took me like a year from buying the CD to actually even see the movie. That shit was good, but it was crazy and confusing and most definitely "Lynchian." Eye is a good Pumpkins song and was a sign of what was to come on their Adore CD. And Perfect Drug is one of my favorite NiN tracks. I was thinking that there was another soundtrak where that line-up of people appeared, but it's escaping me right now, and the song that actually got me to thinking there was another turned out to just be from another Bowie album. The "I'm Afraid of Americans" song. I'm not even going to bother diving deep into why everyone is acting like assholes because I usually always act like an asshole and never mean it, so I assume everyone else is the same way to some extent.
Ziggy Stardust is most definitely in the next spot. Write-up later tonight so we can wrap this thing up. |
