Well, it's also the reason The Mars Volta suck live, at least the last time I heard them. |

#10 Foo Fighters The Colour and the Shape (1997) "You've got to promise not to stop when I say when." ![]() Professional Reviews: All Music Guide: 4 out of 5 stars. Rolling Stone: 3 out of 5 stars Top 3 songs on this album 1. Everlong 2. My Hero 3. Monkey Wrench Dave Grohl's own labor of love, The Foo Fighters rose from the ashes of Nirvana like a glorious phoenix. In my opinion, they blow anything ever written by Nirvana out of the water and I wonder what it would have been like had Dave and Curt shared an equal vocal presence on Nirvana's albums. Anyway, The Colour and the Shape is not only one of the Foo Fighter's greatest compisitions, but it truly is one of the greatest albums of the 1990s. This acted as the group's debut (a lot of debut albums made the cut) and it set its hooks in the sea of the public, dragging the waters for attention. Well they pulled up a whale of a fanbase. Okay, no more stupid little puns like that. Dragging the following information directly from Wikipedia because I was completely unaware of this, "The Colour and the Shape was loosely conceived by Grohl as a concept album which documented the beginning and end of a romantic relationship. Over the course of the making of the album, Grohl's own marriage to photographer Jennifer Youngblood ultimately ended in divorce." Ain't that about a bitch? But it didn't slow Grohl down, and he and the rest of the Fighters went on to make plenty more records. Containing what for my money is one of the best songs ever written (no exaggeration,) Everlong is a tune I will never get tired of hearing blaring out of my speakers. The subdued feel of the whole thing until it breaks down into the chorus is just perfect. My Hero is also on this album and is another strong personal favorite of mine, the up-front drum beat causes me to play mock bass pedals without fail every time. Monkey Wrench, I don't like nearly as much as the other two but it was another hit from the album I felt inclined to highlight up above. Two albums that just missed getting on the list: ![]() 1. Third Eye Blind - Self-titled (1997) As much as a guilty pleasure of mine as Matchbox Twenty, Third Eye Blind's debut album hit around the time of my sweet sixteen and subsequently became an un-spoken soundtrack to a few years of my life. Semi-Charmed Life, How's it Going to Be, and especially Jumper are three songs forever ingrained in my grey matter. ![]() 2. Rammstein - Sehnsucht (1997) Du. Du hast. Du hast mich. I wonder if Rammstein ever thought their shit would catch on in the United States as well as it has. These industrial Germans fell just shy of getting their own spot (though if 2001's Mutter had met the requirements it would have definitely placed.) The aforementioned Du Hast, probably Rammstein's most successful song to date, hails from this album along with Bück Dich which is a song that has a skit to go along with it during live concerts you aren't soon to forget, though will wish you could. Well, some of you. |

Once again I apologize for my typos as well as my complete lack of knowledge when it comes to where to use punctuation when I end sentences with little parenthesis phrases. |

#09 Our Lady Peace Spiritual Machines (2000) "I promised you I would change, but I'm an asshole and I'm ashamed." ![]() Professional Reviews: All Music Guide: 4 out of 5 stars. Entertainment Weekly: (B-) Rolling Stone: 3 out of 5 stars. Top 3 songs on this album 1. All My Friends 2. Middle of Yesterday 3. Life Superman is dead? You don't say! I've always had a soft spot for these canadian folks, following their career from start (Naveed) up until their most recent album. None of them have gripped me quite like Spiritual Machines, however. The whole thing feels like a streamlined concept album about robots, and it is apparently inspired by a book by Ray Kurzweil entitled The Age of Spiritual Machines, though I have no clue about any of that shit. This album was Our Lady Peace's least successful release even when given the favorable reviews from respected publications. Like a few other bands on my list, Our Lady Peace features a vocalist that has a tendency to grate on your nerves (at least he did mine) at first, but once you get past his falsetto caterwaul (I'm running out of words ova' hea'!) you will find an excellent band. Or maybe you won't. Regardless, this was Our Lady Peace's last album to feature the vocals I just commented on, lead singer Rain adopting a more "mainstream voice" for their next album, Gravity. Featuring some interesting concept art for the album, the booklet was actually a pleasure to look through but I remember being pissed off that the lyrics were all jumbled up and more of a chore to attempt to read than anything. That's about the worst thing I can say about this solid release from Our Lady Peace and their command over the first single digit placing entry of the list. Rock on OLP, rock on. To tack on a little personal story here to add some length, heheh, upon purchasing this CD from Target I was criticized and mocked by my mother when I put it in the CD player for the ride back home. Screw you mom, this CD is fantastic. Two albums that just missed getting on the list: ![]() 1. Coal Chamber - Self-titled album (1997) The roof, the roof, the roof is on fire, we don't need no fire let the motherfucker burn. These nu-metal goons actually had a remarkable (by nu-metal standards) album in this late 90s debut, Dez Ferara practicing and perfecting his growls for his future in the band Devildriver. Very catchy tunes wrapped up in less than descriptive track titles, the self-titled album from Coal Chamber ranges from angry (Loco) to angrier (Big Truck, Sway.) ![]() 2. System of a Down - Self-titled (1998) This debut album from Armenian metalers System of a Down is interesting, loud, and silly. Though the lyrics range from slapstick to serious, Serj's voice through the entire bumpy journey is a pleasure to hear. A rough bark like no other, the man can really roll his R's like a goddamn pro. Spiders is an enchanting tune (and one of my alternate ring tones) while Sugar went on to become a huge hit in its own right. |

Getting a fresh listen of the CD as I pen down a few notes on upcoming albums I am inclined to agree with Johnny Park receiving a spot in the top 3 songs. I would go back and change Monkey Wrench out for it, because in all honesty I just don't like the song that much, but I think I'll leave it as I originally wrote it.
I'm also highly inclined to agree with this comment. While I do like the boys and each CD they put out usually has one or two songs on it I like, nothing served up a pristine buffet of post-grunge rock like Colour and the Shape did. Also, does anyone want to help me out with an English lesson about where to put punctuation when ending a sentence with a phrase in parenthesis? I'm just bouncing back and forth with the placement right now but I would like to know the definitive answer. I don't really know how to word the question to google for it, either. |

odd factoid about Sechundsacht. the tape version had two bonus tracks, english versions of Du Hast and Engels. if you flipped the tape at the end of the German versions of Du Hast & Engels, the translations played back. i really used to mess with people's heads that way... |

Yeah, I'd actually have to agree aswell. Everlong really does outclass the rest of their songs. And the whole parenthesis thing is something I've been wondering about aswell. After some wikipedia-ing I've come to the conclusion that the punctuation comes after the parenthesis EXAMPLE [I went to the town(with my brother lol). ], unless if that entire part of text is in parentesi, in which case the punctuation would be inside it. [ (I went to the town with my brother LOL.) ] But yeah, I probably got it wrong >_> |

#08 A Perfect Circle Mer De Noms (2000) "Here I am expecting just a little bit too much from the wounded." ![]() Professional Reviews: All Music Guide: 4 out of 5 stars. Rolling Stone: 2 1/2 out of 5 stars Top 3 songs on this album 1. 3 Libras 2. The Hollow 3. Orestes Okay, I'm gay for Maynard, I admit it. Three CDs headlined by the man made my top twenty, marking him as the most frequently revisited artist in the hallowed halls of my CD collection. (Wait, I've only revealed two of them so far...) My mind is completely made up on this subject, there will never be another vocalist that makes me swoon quite as much as Maynard's sometimes nearly inaudible mumbles and moans. And no matter what the setting he is in, he is always surrounded by exceptional musicians who work only to heighten the entire experience. Mer De Noms is one of those albums that I look at, and even though it was released only eight years ago, I can safely say "That is one of the ones that truly defines my taste in music." 3 Libras will forever reign as one of my most beloved songs of all time. French for "Sea of Names," Mer De Noms' track list reflects this title, over half of the songs sharing someone's first name. The most immediately recognizable song from this recording would be the ubiquitous 'Judith' with it's cries of "Fuck your god, your lord your christ." As a kid I knew I had to have the CD from that one line alone. What I can appreciate now about the CD is how much deeper and...well, better it was compared to that one song and what my preconceived notions of what the CD would be like were at the time. Maynard worked with drummers Josh Freese (Nine Inch Nails) and Tim Alexander (Primus), guitarist Billy Howerdel and Troy Van Leeuwen (QotSA), and the enchanting Paz Lenchantin on bass. What they came together to produce was a milestone in Maynard's career; here he was already with an insanely popular band in Tool and what did he do? Screwed around and made another band that wouldn't lie down and die in Tool's shadow. Two albums that just missed getting on the list: ![]() 1. Oasis - (What's the Story) Morning Glory? (1995) This english rock band spawned five massive singles from this one disc across both the UK and the US. The Gallagher brothers are notoriously egotistic, but it would be hard not to be after releasing a CD as good as this. Wonderwall, Don't Look Back in Anger, and Champagne Supernova are my three highlights looking back on this second album by Oasis. ![]() 2. Queens of the Stone Age - Rated R (2000) Another one of those bands that I have all but avoided (for whatever reason) after finding an album I really liked, my introduction to The Queens of the Stone Age actually came in the form of 2002's Songs for the Deaf. Being really indifferent to the album as a whole, I decided to pick up this from their back catalogue and was more than satisfied this time around. The Lost Art of Keeping Secret is my main highlight on this disc. |

I was aware there were English tracks of those two songs, but I didn't know they were infact on the old tape version. Learn something new everyday!
I'm trying my best mane. I'm banging these out a lot faster than I thought I was going to be able to, but entries like the past one and the Pantera one allow me to really go off on tangents about how I feel about them so it kind of resets me for the next few I might have not as much to say about. As for the one that's going to make you kill me, I'm not entirely sure if it will get your goat or not; I know you're a fan of the band, not sure how you feel about the album though. Popular opinion is that it's an awesome album though, so I figure if you like them you like it.
Thanks for that. It can't be any farther off base than my actual use of the punctuation has been throughout this entire list. I'll try to remember both rules, but it just seems more natural to slap the punctuation within the parenthesis no matter what. |

i'm going through my favorite artists right now mentally...led zeppelin, the beatles, radiohead, nine inch nails, black sabbath, pink floyd, the smashing pumpkins... you haven't really given me much to work with (other than it's a popular album), but i guess it was never really the point trying to make me guess it, so whatever. |

Aenima is here somewhere. And Ecto, you named the band I was hinting around about in your little rundown of favorite artists. It should be easier to pinpoint given that no albums pre-1990 appear on the list, leaving only three real choices on that list. |

I was wondering when Oasis would show up. Should be on any list of 90s albums/bands. BTW, I love Third Eye Blind's debut album. Maybe it's just a guilty pleasure, but there are a number of good songs in it. And I am surprised you picked SOAD's self titled over Toxicity. Unless Toxicity is coming up... |
