Pantera
Cowboys From Hell (1990)
"Believe the word. I will unlock my door... And pass the cemetery gates."

Professional Reviews:
All Music Guide: 4 out of 5 stars.

Top 3 songs on this album
1. Cemetery Gates
2. Cowboys From Hell
3. The Sleep

Regardless of how Pantera started out (see: here) they solidified theirselves as the liquor drinking Cowboys from hell with this aptly named album, completely destorying the image they displayed on their four prior releases. The reason for their complete 180? The introduction of lead singer and world-class prick Phil Anselmo. Dragging the hatred of a hundred men into the studio with him, this notoriously stand-offish son of a bitch carried his real life personality over into his music. Many of Pantera's songs reign as excellent anthems for drinking and beating the shit out of someone, though it seems to be trendy for the new age of metal kids to hate on them for what they started out as. While browsing the metal board it also seemed the thing to do to make fun of superb guitarist and cornerstone of the band Dimebag Darrell Abbott and the unfortunate end he met. While I poked fun at Kurt Cobain earlier, he had a choice and (supposedly) took his own life, while Dimebag's was taken from him live on stage by Nathan Gale. Darrell was shot three times in the head, the third at point blank range killing him instantly.

I'll never forget the night I heard that this happened on the news. In 2004 I was lounging in my room sometime after midnight and had the television tuned into MTV for whatever reason when the MTV news guy came on and dropped a complete bomb on me; Dimebag was dead. Just like that, a very gifted guitarist was snatched away from the public, and to top it all off I had passed up the chance only a few weeks prior to see Damageplan live in concert. Needless to say I was shaken to my core. At the time Pantera was pretty much my go to metal band. Sure they were far from the heaviest band around (who can fault them for such a thing, anyway?) but they delivered in the anger department almost as well as thrash kings Slayer. I equate each song to a case of domestic abuse with Phil pummeling the shit out of you with his vocals while Dimebag and his drummer brother Vinnie Paul layed down crunchy comfort nets with their literal relative playing to keep you coming back for more.

This gem was released just in time to make it onto my list, and although Vulgar Display of Power, Pantera's next release, was much more angry and epic in scope, this album is what it's all about. Featuring the title track which was the second to last hurdle in the original Guitar Hero game, this disc also holds the unsettlingly beautiful song Cemetery Gates which would be almost like a posthumous ballad for Dimebag's gruesome end. Also of note are the songs Primal Concrete Sledge, Psycho Holiday, and The Sleep. I'm going to end this the way I previously intended to, whether it is hacky or not.

R.I.P. "Dimebag" Darrell Abbott.

Two albums that just missed getting on the list:

1. Candlebox - Candlebox (1993) A grunge band that was scoffed at by most grunge fans for the liberties they took with splicing their sound with alt-rock at the time, I rarely hear Candlebox mentioned by anyone anymore. Even though this album had two decent sized hits pulled from it, Change and You, they seem to have been all but forgotten about by everyone I talk with on a day to day basis. That's a shame, but apparently they have an album in the works slated for release sometime in late July, their first in nearly ten years.

2. Cold - 13 Ways to Bleed on Stage (2000) I had this album chartered to be talked about here and just now realized the connection between the title of Cold's second album and the winner of this spot. Ooof, oh well. I faulted Fred Durst earlier for only doing one thing right in discovering Staind, but I forgot that he was also the driving force behind Cold. Much like Staind (in every way, really) Cold's career boomed after their second releases, but the quality of their actual music met a sharp decline. I can honestly say this CD is golden from track one to fifteen, with special mention going to End of the World.

What do you mean Ecto? In the first post, in my notepad, or what? In my notepad I've already gotten the entire topic mapped out minus write-ups.

Red Hot Chili Peppers
Blood Sugar Sex Magik (1991)
"I dont ever want to feel like I did that day. Take me to the place I love, take me all the way."

Professional Reviews:
All Music Guide: 4 1/2 out of 5 stars.
Rolling Stone: 4 out of 5 stars

Top 3 songs on this album
1. Under the Bridge
2. Suck My Kiss
3. Give it Away

This was the album that I spoke about forgetting earlier, along with the excellent Californication. While the latter album was my first love and true introduction to the Peppers' discography, Blood Sugar Sex Magik went on to become the one recording to represent them for my permanent library. Even now I'm asking myself how I could have glazed over the thought of the Red Hot Chili Peppers and their outlandish stage antics when piecing together notable acts from the 1990's that would later be used to compose this list. These funky sock on cock rockers are probably one of the biggest bands from the '90s and definitely need no finely written introduction from me.

Featuring excellent musicians such in the irreplacable Flea mashing away on the bass in the buff and the velvet tongued vocalizations of Anthony Kiedis, in my opinion the real shining star of this ensemble was the nimble fingered John Frusciante and his six string. That being said, everyone pulls their weight and pools it together to form quite the funky experience not seen in a live act since. On a slightly related yet completely random note, John Frusciante layed down the guitar work for the haunting Bowie song Bring Me the Head of the Disco King, which also featured Maynard James Keenan of Tool fame on vocals to create what in my mind is a true perfect storm of talent.

Well that's another five revealed for the second day in a row. Depending on what finds me on this terribly gloomy, rainy day I may wind up putting out a few more. If not, look for the next batch of updates around the same time frame tomorrow. Thanks to those of you who pop in to read and leave little comments.

Two albums that just missed getting on the list:

1. The Butthole Surfers - Electriclarryland (1996) Falling in line with their eyebrow raising, questionable name, the Butthole Surfers some damn fine if not overly poppish songs. The album is of course a play on the Jimi Hendrix album Electric Ladyland, and the opening riff of The Lord is a Monkey feels like a throw back to Jimi's playing. Another band from this list that received some popularity due to Beavis and Butthead, the hit single Pepper was strong enough that it would have broken through regardless. Their music can put a smile on your face, just be weary of explaining to someone with wandering eyes just what The Butthole Surfers are.

2. Propaghandi - How to Clean Everything (1993) One of only two punk bands to make this chart, Propaghandi was my first introduction to "alternative" sources of music outside of what I had grown up with. Long before I ever owned the Demon Knight soundtrack, I won this innocent looking record from the state fair in a dart game. What I heard when I put it into my discman later that night will stick with me forever. With tracks such as Ska Sucks, Stick the Fucking Flag Up Your Goddamn Ass You Son of a Bitch, and Fuck Machine, this record could be responsible for warping my once innocent psyche.

Well you said "Though the entire list will be a work in progress over the next twenty days," doesnt that mean that you were still tweaking it by the time you started posting the list? I was just suggesting to have everything planned out first before you posted anything.

Ah, I see where you got that but I was mainly talking about the write-ups in that situation. My wording in the "preface" was a bit wonky though, sorry for any misunderstandings.

As far as I know none of them were commercial hits, but it was a really solid album especially when taking the premise into consideration. Out of curiosity, which song is it that you think you've heard?

One Man Army - The Prodigy/Tom Morello.

That's what it's called in WMP, but I have no idea if the information is correct..

Though your list is radically different than my album list, it still reeks of win.

I <3 BSSM though.

I loved you the moment I saw Tool and RATM on your list, but then RHCP popped up there, and now my love is beyond the normal love between a man and another man. I feel connected to you the way a penis is connected to his nuts, or a mustache to his beard. This is the best feeling in the world.

Seto~

As I expect any Rage purist would. I wasn't lying when I said I struggled with which album to put there, in the end I just reasoned that I enjoyed more tracks from Battle than I did on Evil Empire. If The Guess Whom was still around, he would agree with you and you could tag team me.

Uber~

As Riku's said, I was literally moved to tears by your perverted but poignant words. The connection of a mustache to a beard is truly one of the strongest bonds one can experience. We can have music babies.

Ecto~

Which four? I'm sure I could guess but I'm just going to ask since I'm busily finishing up the little blurbs for each "just missed" CD. I'm sure as I close in towards the top you will have heard more of the albums mentioned. There's one entry in particular I think will get a rise out of you for getting mentioned but not making it into the list.

Superunknown, Blood Sugar Sex Magik, Gish, and Mellon Collie.

I think we share more music in common than that, hopefully appearing later on.

I'd like At the Drive In but I can't stand how crappy Cedric's voice was back then.

I implore you to give any of songs I've linked in here a listen to. I believe the website I hosted them at said unactive downloads will be held on to for 30 days, so there's no real rush involved. Take it at your own pace, but since you said you've liked a few from my list I don't think you would be too disappointed in the rest.

I could see that being the case for a lot of people, but there's something about his rough manner of singing that I like. It does sound like he would prosper from stopping to take a breath every now and then, though.

With that being said, I went out and got some Arby's for lunch and now that the rain drops are falling heavy and I don't have anywhere to be for a few hours, I'm going to go ahead and put up a few more entries.
