In the games shines tend to have differing stats as well as their different color. This doesn't really affect anything battle wise in an RP environment. Still the general stance is that pokemon of a different color than usual are rare, likely due to rare genetic mutation or some such. But all pokemon looking the same can get boring and folks enjoy customizing their pokemon as they like.

So what do you guys think? Should pokemon of a different color, a shiney or other color, be a very rare occurrence? Or is color just a cosmetic thing that doesn't have much affect on anything?

Why not both? Pokemon must vary somewhat between individuals. Make it so Pokemon just don't all look identical. One Meowth has a silver coin while the other's is white or gold or iron. There's a colony of albino Mr. Mime in this cave under the mountain.

But then the shiny Pokemon are distinctly different. Larger or smaller, more savage or docile and they tend to live alone or outside their typical habitat. For example a group of kids stumbling across a six-foot tall Alakazam with silver fur in an abandoned house on their street. Or a 20 foot Dragonite with glowing eyes that rises from the sea right before shipwrecks. Or on the other side maybe there's a foot-tall Primape with pastel blue fur, a kind demeanor and who only knows sing and baton pass.

...wait what. Since when did shiny pokemon have different stats in the games? I think in Gen 1 and 2 maybe...but for the past four, there hasn't been ANY statistical difference unless someone hit me over the head and lied to me for fifteen years. o.O

Otherwise...seriously, I don't care. Shinies were valuable in game ONLY for their rare looks, not for their greater power. I find it silly that most pokemon look like carbon cutouts. So long as Shinies aren't rated as rarer than recolors (because that's ALL they are, is just a canon recolor) I don't see a need to place importance on it.

I suppose if people want to make Legacy have shinies have a statistical difference they don't in canon, that's one thing, though...but really. They are just recolors. Who cares?

(EDIT: As a note, unless I can revive my interest in PbP RP, I am unlikely to actually play here, so feel free to disregard my opinion in that respect...here I just REALLY wanted to make sure I pointed out that Shinies are statistically identical in the games because they are.)

Hello, I posted in the Roll Call thread, so if you don't recognize me, don't be surprised. In that post, I mentioned that I have a tabletop DnD style Pokemon adventure going with my nephews. In it, I set up a rule for such a thing like this. First, I set that there were distinct differences between a "shiny" Pokemon and a "recolored" Pokemon. A truly shiny Pokemon is extremely rare and should have certain benefits that come along with it so as not to belittle how rare it is to get one. I set it up that they would have stat bonuses, and on top of that, NPC's would be affected by the shiny, for instance, they might be more impressed with you as the trainer of a Pokemon of such rarity and be more apt to do things for you and help you on your adventure. On the flip side, recolors are a more common way of making each Pokemon more distinct. I made recoloring a Pokemon a type of modification that a player can go to a specialist in certain towns to do and pay for. By recolor, I didn't limit it to color alone. For example, one of my nephews started with a Squirtle and because his character was a cosplayer and was dressed up as Rock Lee from Naruto, his Squirtle was green and had a blue ribbon with eye cutouts over his eyes to be dressed like Raphael, a ninja turtle. My other nephew started with a Fennekin that had a fluffy afro to match his trainer. My third nephew started with a Shinx, and he made his trainer have a scar on his cheek that matched the pattern of Shinx's ear fluff. Recolors can't fool NPC's into thinking they're actually a "shiny" Pokemon because shinies have a natural "Aura" about them that give them away immediately. Additionally, since recoloring is a way for players to make their footprints into this world, I made it so that everyone's starter they could customize or recolor for free, since it is their starter and should be more personal to them. They still had a chance for the Pokemon to be an actual shiny, but that was something I rolled a percentile dice and an additional d10 for a 1/1000 chance for. Past their starter, once they caught a wild Pokemon, they had to take it to be customized at a specialist, unless the mod, dm, etc. stated the wild Pokemon had any distinct features.

Anyways, this is obviously just my side of things and what I did for my personal use of DMing, so do with it what you will. I didn't vote, because my opinion falls in between. I hope what I said helps.

That might be my old school pokemon memories that shinies had improved EV stats compared to your typical pokemon. I don't really know how they rank in the current games though.

Hmm that sounds pretty good, redefining 'shinies' as something special and super rare while still allowing folks to have other recolors going on.

I'm glad you like the idea. My nephews don't know it yet, because they haven't made it far enough, but the "shop" that they can get a recolor or modification done at is called a Smeargle Shop. Just fun tid bits to add in when thinking about this stuff.
