So Legendaries got way out of hand when folks were allowed to capture them. And once captured the Legendary was treated pretty much just like any other common pokemon, even in battle they weren't really much more powerful or anything special. But of course doesn't every trainer dream of one day meeting a Legendary? I'm thinking we treat Legendaries like actual legends. They're more powerful than your typical pokemon and there's only one. Folks will have a chance to meet them but cannot capture them like any common plebe pokemon. Legendaries would be used primarily for special events and storylines. Players would be able go on quests to try and meet their desired legend. If you can successfully complete the legend's emblem and quest then you'll have the opportunity to meet the legend and then a few things could happen. You might battle the legend, in the same sort of style we use for HM quest beasts, thus instead of some gang rape fest on the legend with pokeball spam, you're fighting through RP and winning is more whether you can hold your own in the fight rather than actually capturing or even fainting the legend. Winning might earn you the respect or animosity of the legend. Or you might even manage to befriend the legend, though that maybe prove easier said than done. Succeeding in any of these endeavors would grant you the ability to use the legend's emblem as a means for summoning the legend to you in certain situations, special events, moments of dire need, etc, but not in just typical, everyday journey life. Now depending on how the legend feels about you based on your initial encounter it might come to your aid, might come and attack you outright, or ignore you completely. Now this is just what I think would be cool to do, but if folks would prefer legends not have any connections to trainers at all and be treated more like gods in a sense that they ignore the world of people and might pop up when they feel like it to crap all over trainers then that works too. "How many assholes we got on this ship anyhow?"

I'm on the same line of thinking as Jance. If folks just have to have a legends in order to feel they've accomplished something, make it a limited summoning option and the things disposition towards you determines how if it help or just kicks your ass and goes back home. I would go as far as to have someone else RP the legend in such a case just to hit home that the player has no control over this thing that has a mind of its own. I will, however, bend to the will of the masses. If you all would rather 'catch them all' so be it. We can keep the egg idea we were using to make everyone happy. |

I'm in agreement with Jance, as well. Legendaries shouldn't be put into a game to be "captured". It's a nice touch for the handheld games, but I think that realistically, these creatures would just be insane to try and capture. That's like imagining that someone would actually be able to catch Mewtwo: it just wouldn't happen. I like the "emblem" idea. "Disposition" is something that could be used for more than just Legendaries, but it probably wouldn't be something that needs to be fleshed out in the beginning. We definitely want to decide how the Legendaries would respond based on Disposition. I like the concept that each Legendary would be RPed by someone. |

well, i've always liked being able to catch the legendaries (just didn't think it was hard enough) but that really wasn't what we were doing anyway. never dug the everyone gets an egg nonsense. i'm down for them being monstrous boss battles, as long as there's a notable reward for it

Being able to catch a Legendary in the game was awesome. If we're not interested in opening the game to new players, having someone catch a Legendary is fine. It's at the point that we say "this isn't going to be just for us, it's going to be open to anyone who wants to join" that Legendaries become an issue. It's like trying to fight over one specific piece of gear, that's never replicated anywhere...and worse, with the Pokemon system, traditionally once a Pokemon is caught, it is that Trainer's for life (unless the Trainer dies or the Pokemon is released). So then, in order to get a Legendary that has already been captured, you resign your character to being a thief that has a one-of-a-kind item. It's basically painting a target on your back. |

I like the emblem idea, and making Legendary Pokémon inherently more powerful than lesser ones. However, I would allow capturing Legendaries. However only certain Pokéballs could contain them (like Master Balls or similar devices) and capturing a Legendary Pokémon would have adverse effects on the environment. Completing a capture quest for a Legendary makes you Public Enemy #1, and you have to deal with this hugely powerful Pokémon trying to escape and murder you every time you use it.

*shrugs* I was one of the few ninnies that didn't actually have issue with the legendaries being capturable in the old way, provided it wasn't a 'THERE CAN BE ONLY ONE' nonsense. I loved the notion of the avatar eggs even more, in that that explained why they weren't so much more powerful than other pokemon. *shrugs* My opinion really doesn't count for much, though, because I still don't see myself coming back here. I think I'm getting burned out on PbP RP in general, TBH. I...want to RP, but I more want to find a person or two, and make a story, like the old freeforms, or just write stuff, not really RP with people in general. Though the old Dark Horizons or other similar events do hold a tingle of excitement in my head when I think of them...but I'm getting off topic. Legendary pokemon...eh. I suppose in my head, the general excitement of them is about the same as for any other pokemon I happen to like. I might see them as ordinary pokemon +1 (okay, so maybe Arceus might count as a +2 but...) but...that's it. I have like double vision when I look at them. On one hand, there's the powerful god-beings that existed, made the world, and all that. And then there's their descendants, which are pretty darn cool in their own right, but aren't the same level of OMGWTFPWNED that the originals are. And these descendants are what I tend to see as what people can actually catch. But then, like I said, I really liked the baby legendary business myself. *shrugs* And again, this is just merely a perspective and one from a person that still isn't seeing it likely to actually play here. The whole emblem summon thing could be kinda cool, and certainly if that's what the majority thinks is awesome, go for it, there's nothing wrong with it, nor is my opinion better than anyone else's or even right. *nods* Just...offering how I always looked at it. I liked the egg system and thought it was a great way of doing it, but that's me. I liked the RP idea behind 'Oh crap, I'm raising a baby god, what do I feed it' and stuff? XD Really, I guess, whatever people want most to do...I can't see myself ever wanting to do a legendary quest if I didn't get a (watered down) copy of the original in my grubby mitts, but I'm a greedy woman, I guess. :) (Edit: When it comes down to it tho, just taking them out entirely wouldn't break my heart, either, in the end. *shrugs* I kind of stopped caring about legendaries being 'special' or not YEARS ago.)
