So Dan brought up a good point in the discussion thread. The classic pokemon 'game' overall is to get your 8 badges, battle the Elite 4 and go on to defeat the Champion. That tends to get rather tedious though but it is pretty expected of a pokemon RPG. Of course for a lot of folks the 'game' isn't really what your character's doing but the mechanics you're following. And then some people aren't interested at all in the traditional trainer route and just want to run around collecting pokemon or doing something completely different. Folks also mentioned that a game is something that eventually ends, something you can beat at some point. Also most games have a sense of competition and a sense of purpose. So what do you think the focal point of the G part in RPG should be? How would you define the game part of the site and what exactly is 'the game' to you? |

ain't no new thing

i'll repeat what i said over the course of a few posts in the main thread: jgsei has... 6 cities? let's say two of them don't have gyms. 4 "badges" or whatever it is from jgsei entitles you to challenge the opaddeka elite 4 and presumably by that point you can make it there. that's something i could actually see someone completing within a reasonable amount of time i think approximately year, assuming you post 1-2 times a week, is how long it should take to do this. or at least to make it to the point of challenging the elite 4, because that's something people should probably fail at a time or two. that means if you're able to post and get modded 2-4 times a week, you can beat "the game" by june. not bad. of course, most of the focus is rarely on the game, and i think our goal is to have plenty of "distractions" with site-wide events. but we gotta have some kind of underpinning to it all |

"How many assholes we got on this ship anyhow?"

Going to state the obvious first.... The pokemon game: Collect 8 badges Beat the E4 Beat the Champ Along the way: Find all the HM's to speed up your travel and unlock areas Find cool items that help you train your pokemon faster Grow 60 some berries you'll never use Collect all the pokemon. I repeat, collect all the pokemon. The game is always the same - except they create new pokemon so it's not the same game on a different map. Right, so we have that, did some of that, all the battling was a bit of a chore and what do you get in the end? No idea, we never got there but I assume it was a two second pat on the back and the glory of starting all over. The game behind the game is what keeps people here - otherwise we'd do all of the above on a gameboy. That game is what every RPG seems to offer today on a game system - an alternate life. Basically designing a customizable character with a reputation of some sort. Interacting with other unique characters and doing things outside of the gameboy box. Having your very own batcave where you can stash your shiny loot and show off to your friends. Doing things you can't do in real life. Building and shaping the imaginary world you're living in. Have I missed anything? So apart from the obvious - what else CAN there be? Cause I really don't know. I'm idea'd out. |

I want to go in more on this in the Story thread, but, I would recommend following the anime League more closely. You need at least 8 badges to compete (though there are 10-20 in Kanto I think), and you get your badges and enter the championships. The qualifying trainer have an elimination tourney and the winner gets the chance to challenge the Elite Four for the opportunity to snatch the title of Champion. Champions remain in their seat until theyre unseated. Losers must wait a year for the next tourney. Make the Pokemon League more dynamic and interactive. In the games, its pretty static. Your character will be the only person to challenge and have a chance to defeat the Elite Four. No one but you and your rival actually participate in the League. As for everyone else, there should be breeding competitions, contests, treasure hunts, political conflicts, legends to chase, battles and wars, etc. to make people not on the League path feel like theyre doing something worthwhile. | |
