Tracking Stuff

Manix was gaping at the instrument panel and the new city now stretching out beneath the ship. The last time Floyd had moved the spacecraft, she had been sound asleep in her quarters. This time she had insisted on seeing this spectacle herself. The effort had taken mere moments - the Sunflare was that fast.

From the grin on the alien's face, Floyd was more than pleased with the female's reaction. He aimed to impress and secretly made a mark on his personal score chart.

"You like?" he gesture to the panorama outside.

Nodding vigorously, Manix gasped, "Yes! I've never seen anything like it."

Of course she hadn't - Lower Class Scavians never went off-world, and very seldom were permitted to travel outside of their district. Out of pity for their lack of freedoms, or perhaps as a measure of further control, the Scavian government did not allow them access to information about fanciful things found outside of their humble existence. Another words, if they didn't realize they were deprived, They never knew what they were missing.

This bit of knowledge did nothing to dampen either of the alien's moods.

"This is much nicer town than the last one. Less thugs too. The people are just as unpleasant though." Floyd began, eager to tell her all he knew about Escennia.

"Why?" she asked innocently enough.

"Well, Escennia is the most luxurious town a person can choose to live in. It's population is largely made up of people with higher incomes. Unfortunately, they know this and look down on people not as fortunate as themselves." This made Manix frown. Floyd could see the comparison she was making with their kind and strove to lighten the mood. "They also have the very best green house in the entire country. I prefer to come here if I'm going to buy gardening equipment."

"Then you can show me how to grow things and make money off of them?"

"I'll do you one better - I'll show you how to grow things that will not only make you money, but save you money by replacing items you would otherwise have to buy." He stood and made his way to the door of the control room. "Come on, I'll show you the Hydroponics Bay."

Of course, by now she had seen the two story glass enclosure filled with greenery. The panes were always speckled with fine condensation and artificial light filtered down from above. She had never been inside though and her curious nature prompted her to hop up and promptly chase after her host.

The Hydroponics Bay door swept open, wrapping them both in a cloud of steamy mist that Manix immediately enjoyed. She looked around the enclosure that was carefully divided into two floors but with sections railed off to allow much taller plants to grow. Several shelves adorned the aisles and every inch of space had been carefully utilized to maximize the amount of plants that could be cultivated.

"It's wonderful!" she gushed while roving through the unique space that so much reminded her of her home. It immediately became her most favorite place on the ship. "What are these?" He had caressed a large green melon with light green stripes that sharply contrasted with its darker shade. It grew on a long vine along a mulch covered bed."

"That's a watmel berry vine. Those are very popular because pokemon like them so much. Every one I know grows at least one plant so they can pamper their pokemon. It's not only a great food source, but it's really sweet - which is probably why trainers like to use it to get strange pokemon to warm up to them."

Manix studied the vine a bit more before an idea came to her. "Do you think the baby aerodactyl would like me if I gave it some watmels?"

"Of course it would!" Floyd laughed. "I'll give you some tonight when we get back, some Lum berries too."

"Lum?"

"Another kind of berry that's really useful. It heals all kinds of ailments and replaces at least four different kinds of first aid hyposprays. It's really something a good pokemon trainer wouldn't dream of doing without."

That decided it for Manix. She aspired to be a good pokemon trainer, not only so she could take better care of Nema and Drak, but also because she wanted to prove to Floyd, as well as the humans, that she could take care of herself.

"Then a Lum will be the first plant I try to grow. What do I do first?"

A delighted Floyd then led the girl on a tour of the snobby town below, stopping to buy a few items for himself, but also a few things to help his new friend become successful.

Tracking Stuff

A day on the town ended with the pair sitting in the floor of the hydroponics bay, planting things, and discussing fertilizer. Manix was delighted and was surprised to find herself enjoying the time spent with the Upperclass male. He had been genuinely attentive and patiently answered her questions. It was the first time, she realized, that she began to think of Floyd as not a tyrant, but possibly a normal person.

Floyd noticed the subtle change in her behavior as well - the number of sarcastic comments and snobbish retorts per minute were dwindling. There was even a playful flick to her tail when she looked at him. Something she didn't realize. She also didn't seem to realize that she was actually looking AT him, rather than at his feet or past him. None of this was mentioned, but he was pleased to know that if he could shake the rigid upbringing of the Sordian Upperclass, she could also wriggle free of the chains that seemed to dictate her own behaviors as well.

"There's not much left to see here." Floyd said after a moment. He had enjoyed their day in Escennia so much, he was afraid that leaving might break the spell.

Manix stopped what she was doing, letting the spade and the soil it held fall back into the bag. Her thoughts weren't so far off from his own. "What's next then?"

"Well," he replied quietly, after a moment's thought. "I need to go back Genesis and check on things. It's kinda of my job."

"What's ...Jin...jinny-sees?"

Floyd chuckled at her awkward pronunciation of the word. "It's an island in the South just outside of Opaddekan Territory. It's neutral ground for this country, and the one in the North to meet and keep the peace. Also a nice vacation spot for humans. They seem to like the beach, the resort, and the restaurants we have there."

The girl looked positively confused. "I thought you were a General here? This doesn't sound like something a military would have you doing."

Floyd leaned back against a small tree and threw up his hands happily, "You got me! It isn't." He was smiling. Her frown deepened so he hurried to explain. "There was a war not so long ago in which I was largely responsible for leading our troops in. Too many died. We won, of course, but it was noticed that...I refused to use any of our technology to help the humans. I only relied on what they had. Their trust in me, if they ever really had any, began to falter. So, the higher ups thought is best if I placed somewhere out of the way. So I've been tidily tucked away on an island where they don't have to worry about me."

Manix was once more staring at the floor, her hands now coated in dirt, the lifeless flop of her tail on the floor - Floyd sighed, knowing the happy moment they had shared had been too good to last.

"Apoc told me that they made you stop looking for a way home - in exchange for leaving me alone." There, she'd said it. The cat was out of the bag.

Now her mood made sense. He scoffed to himself and sighed heavily. "Yeah, something like that."

"Were you that close? To going home, I mean." It was another question she'd been longing to ask but hadn't known how to bring it up.

-"I think so. You see, another pokemon, not unlike Kyogre over there," He pointed to the big aquarium through the clear panes of the bay, "-Brought me and some others here from another dimension. I found this creature awhile back, and it was going to tell me how it made all of this possible, because we can't go home at all unless we're in the right dimension. However, it refused to do so unless I first obtained Kyogre, Rayquaza, and Groudon - representations of our three gods - as proof that I could face my fears and handle the information it was going to give me.

"I had to tell my bosses about all of this when I was explaining you to them, because I didn't want to go through with it. You're here because I was trying to cut corners. They didn't like the idea that Celebi might undo what had happened, putting people at risk. They liked the idea less that I might find a way to open a permanent portal between universes. They seemed to be under the impression that we would...invade." He snickered, genuinely disgusted with the idea.

Manix wasn't sure how she felt about this explanation. It wasn't exactly what she had been expecting. "So...you're just giving up? Because the oom'ans told you to?"

The General reached out and gently took her hand. His cheeks were rosy with whatever was on his mind, and she started panic and pull away. He stopped her, holding fast. "Manix. The last thing I want is for you to be unhappy. If you want to stay here, then that's good enough for me." He smiled sadly and let go, then climbed to his feet and walked slowly to the door.

Unable to say anything, she watched him go.

[Now as far as the story goes, Floyd flies on to Genesis. During that stay Manix remains behind and he makes a few side trips now put behind him on solo NC threads. A FF between Floyd and Manix occurs that will change his opinion on certain matters. The secret meeting with Mr. Nobody happens, and then the pair go into hiding while Floyd goes after the last two pieces of his puzzle.]
