The engine's hum quieted down and finally fell silent as the boxy vehicle came to a stop. Mark had driven out of sight of the city before putting the machine through its paces, tearing up quite a bit of grass in the process, and was pleased with how well everything ran. He stretched as he made his way to the back and lowered the rear hatch. He grabbed a cheap folding chair he'd picked up at the supermarket off of the floor where he dropped it and set it and a beach umbrella up at the base of the ramp. Satisfied, he grabbed a beer and sat down in the chair facing a wide expanse of open grass.

"Alright, here we go. Zeruel?" He picked a pokeball off his belt and depressed the button, watching the ghost pokemon materialize in front of him. "Right I want you to... Oh, why not." He smiled as he let out the rest of his pokemon giving him Zeruel and Sequoia to his left and the rest to his right. His three eggs sat in front of him, though he didn't think they'd be learning anything today. "Sequoia, razor leaf this open." He held the bottle out to his right and was rewarded by a flash of green that split the bottom of the bottle. The trainer's face fell as he watched the alcohol soak into the grass. "That was not supposed to happen." He stomped up the ramp, pokemon watching, and trashed the severed bottle and opening himself a new one. "Eugh, warm."

Settled in his chair again, he pointed at Zeruel with the mouth of his bottle. "Now I'm going to see what you all can do starting with you, missy. Aveta, Sequoia, I'm sorry to say it but you two will be alternating duty as our target. Aveta, it's because you're unbelievably strong and can take anything the others can dish out. Sorry about that." He half smiled at the seahorse. "Sequoia, you're going to be doing guinea pig duty as well because you'll be able to heal quickly as long as the sun is out."

"Now, Zeruel use Protect. Aveta, use Dragon Pulse... Let's see what that shield can take."

Thus the little area was set up, and the pokemon were put to their tasks of... fighting each other? Not a common thing, but not too strange. Some pokemon play-fought on their own time just for kicks, but this was a little different.

The duskull powered up the invincible shield, and the water type took aim and shot. It hit the semi-visible barrier, and it shuddered but held perfectly. The energy faded out, as did the shield. Doing that a second time wouldn't be quite so easy. It might not even work!

But before they could start a second round of testing, a pokemon waddled through the trampled grass towards them. He wasn't going towards them intentionally, they just happened to be in his path. The stunky, purple and low to the ground, stamped over the grass like it owned everything and didn't care who was in his way. This was his favorite way to go, dangit, and he didn't care if any stupid human and his stupid pokemon were around. He did what he wanted.

Not that the skunk said any of this. But he was thinking it.

Mark watched the shimmering war of light in front of him in slack jawed amazement. Everything he'd seen up until now had just been the creatures hitting each other, with the occasional fireball. Sequoia had been the most stunning because of her regenerative capability. This was power. This was strength. This was both beautiful and terrible at the same time. This.... was a skunk. "Oh... Sh*t." The trainer licked suddenly dry lips as he looked at the purple ball of fluff in abject terror. "Form a wall, that creature doesn't get within ten feet of this door!"

He backed up the ramp and smacked a button to raise the ramp, nodding to himself as Zeruel and Aveta took the center positions with the others fanning out to either side. "Set, this one is yours. Use Yawn to put him to sleep and follow that up with Dig." The miniature hippo took a few steps forward and dropped its jaw in a mouth aching yawn, showing off a monstrous set of tusks, and shaking its head from side to side. It then stretched and dove face first into the grassy soil beneath, throwing dirt and foliage about as it became submerged.

The Stunky was initially very glad the human had put the big ugly hunk of metal a little more out of his way - this was his territory, after all. But when Set approached him, he raised his nose in the air in disdain. He was going to have to lower himself and fight?

As Set stepped forward, he stirred up a little of the ground beneath him. Small grains of sandy earth floated around him, before flying considerably faster through the air. The Stunky shook himself, trying to blink sand out of his eyes. He wafted his tail, turned back from the source of the storm and released a noxious gas into the air behind him. Just as he did so, Set opened his mouth to yawn. It had its desired effect - the Stunky turned back a little too early and yawned too, eyes now blinking in drowsiness - but Set got a full mouthful of the brownish-green cloud. Long story short, it did not taste good.

He dug himself into the ground, chunks of earth and grass flying all around. As the Stunky realised what was happening, he dashed forward, trying to slash at Set's back legs. Set just managed to avoid him, and the Stunky landed heavily on the ground. He jumped up, listening intently for the hippo's location.

"That has to taste nasty." Mark muttered to himself as he watched the skunk lift its tail and spray directly into the hippopotas' gaping maw. "Hope the maniac doesn't have a sense of taste." Safe within his bunker, the trainer shrugged as he watched the sand creature start burrowing into the soil. With the skunk charging into attack, it was more likely than not that the hippo would get hit and end up unconscious again. "Do I feel like cheating the odds a little bit... Yeah." He picked up the handset next to the door and depressed the button, bringing the loudspeakers online. "Ohm, paralyze that thing and start stripping its defenses. Set, blind it when you're back on the surface." He released the button and grinned, this was getting interesting.

Outside the hippo continued its mad scrabbling at the earth, while the minuscule insect jumped into action. Its fur crackled and stood on end as an electrical charge built up. In a flash of light, a bolt of light arced from bug to mammal as the insect's fur returned to normal. Circling to the side that Set was least likely to accidently pop up, at least in her view, Ohm started to cry at an earwax melting pitch. It shouldn't take long under that assault for her prey to be rendered helpless to attack.

Mr. Stunky was haughty, and grumpy, but most of all he was tired. A numbing drowsiness gripped his senses and made it hard for him to remember what he was so haughty and grumpy about; all he could think was that he wanted to close his eyes and go to sleep right here, and he didn't want anyone bothering him for at least eight hours, maybe ten. He'd quite forgotten that there was a giant brown hippo burrowing under the ground at that instant, and he saw the newly arrived yellow joltik as another little irritation, an obstacle before bed. He put up his walls the best way he knew how. He wiggled his tail and shook his rump and planted his feet, and then in two great sighs he released a cloud of purple gas and a cloud of black smoke. The whole of the air around him was a murky, dark mess, and amidst it all, he settled himself down to go to sleep.

Ohm the joltik took the brunt of both noxious clouds. The purple gas stuck to her fur and filled her nostrils; the black smoke only made it harder to see. Ohm, of all creatures, had the keen eyes to penetrate the fog. She added a golden spark to the air, which rippled and ran across the earth until the sleeping stunky was gripped by it, paralyzed. She followed this with a scream, ear-piercing, enough to make the stunky toss as in a nightmare, around the same time the hippo resurfaced and caused the earth to cave-in on the sleeping skunk. The sand covered the skunk's eyes, and the grumpy skunk pokémon growled and whined in its sleep, rolling from its belly to its back to find a more comfortable position.

And the sandstorm raged on, pelting all but the hippo with sharp small stones.

"It's weak! I could catch it!" Mark blinked a bit as he saw the skunk pokemon loll about on the ground. "On second thought... Why would I want to?" With a grin, he picked up the radio and keyed the outside speakers. "Ohm one more screech and pull back. Set. FINISH HIM!"

The oversized tick suited actions to words and let out another ear piercing shriek as it fled towards the safety of the others. The hippopotas, on the other hand, would be trying to submerge again and come up beneath the skunk with jaws wide open. Rage over being poisoned flooded his body and he was planning on biting that annoying purple thing in half and burying it for what it'd done. There was no desire for food in his tiny vegetarian brain, only revenge. Crush and smash and grind its body to dust with sand. Flay its flesh from its bones and leave its skeleton lying bare upon the ground. Rip and tear it to tiny bits so there's no trace of what it was. Then jump and stamp on the bits until they too are flattened and scattered in the wind.

The sound of screeching filled the air even through the sandstorm. The shrill, high-pitched shriek was like a knife, and it cut through the grasslands, just as it cut through the sleeping stunky's dreams.

The skunk was now paralyzed, sleeping, drastically vulnerable to physical attacks, and being buffeted by small but sharp rocks with every howling gust of wind. It had meant to defend its territory; it was now too far in this horrid, nightmarish coma to remember what it was fighting for. It twitched, a little, in its death-like state. A wide and pitiless hippo burrowed under the earth directly underneath it.

As the hippo resurfaced - and as the screeching joltik retreated - the stunky opened its eyes at exactly the moment to see its destruction. The hippo's maw was a black vise, and the large, pointed yellow teeth clamped down around the stunky's neck. Still paralyzed, but still breathing, the stunky watched and then felt the hippo's head shake from side-to-side until the neck snapped and the body went flying over the earth. The stunky was no longer aware of anything as the hippo began trampling its decapitated body with tree-trunk legs, but for its own part, the skunk spewed from its purple innards one last cloud of noxious gas that at least choked at the hippowdon's throat and made him pause in his trampling, if only for an instant.

While the sandstorm raged on, the skunk was utterly decimated.

Gnash! TEAR! DESTROY!!! The hippo was lost to the world, stomping and grinding the body of its foe into the ground in a frenzy that showed no semblance of sanity. Massive yellow tusks ripped into the body as it attempted to spread its enemy's remains as far as possible.

"Okay now that's... That's a bit excessive." Mark winced as the hippo took the brunt of a gaseous explosion from the beheaded stunky. Further enraged as its dead foe continued to fight back, the hippopotas renewed its assault with even more mindless brutality. It was just as hard to look away as it was to watch. "Um... anyway, good job out there? Why is he..." The trainer fought to keep down his lunch as he quickly hid his eyes from view. "I'm just going to return everyone to their balls." He quicky lowered the ramp enough so he could recall the pokemon that were outside, with the exception of Set, and then returned it to its closed position with a metallic clang. The trainer then proceeded to keep himself busy for the next hour planning the path they would take and doing research on the supposed 'holy mechanisms'

Current Quest

Mark had two real options given all of his target locations were on Corona Island. Well three, technically. He could take the long route and hoof it the entire way along the coast to Kevin Baconville and then take the bridge. He could make his way to the Tinder Tunnel and make his way through that way, or he could use one of the diglett tunnels. Having already had an experience with those, he realized he'd have to find someplace to park his vehicle. Not with Melody. He'd also need to do further research on possible hazards later but for now he'd deal with the hippo.

With the sounds of violence finally stopped, Mark popped his head outside and saw a fifteen foot wide crater that had been stained red. Fragments of purple and white fur were everywhere and it even looked like some of the remains had gotten onto the bumper of the APC. "You done?" The hippo looked up at him tiredly before curling up and going to sleep. "Whatever." He returned the pokemon to its ball and set out towards Radloff. He'd make more definite plans when he saw what the parking rate was.

That was definitely a gruesome display. Savage even. Mark definitely needed to consider anger management therapy for that Hippo. It might one day decide to do that him which was not nice. Not nice at all. At the very least it had a lasting impact on the near future. That is to say... nothing really wanted to deal with Mark and his crazed Pokémon. There was nothing to see nor do for the next fifteen minutes before he managed to cross over into the Sparse Crops. Who could blame the wild Pokémon? I'd run too if I'd been in the area.

Thusly... Mark left the Moorfeldt Grasslands and crossed into the Radloffian Farmlands! Carry on!
