Cute and Fluffy Evil Overlord
|
Spoiler: click to toggle Alright, girl, let's get moving. Ben leaned down to pat the white shoulder. Jax pranced in place under him, eager to get moving. He chuckled. Sorry, it's been a while since we've gone for a run, hasn't it? Well, no sense in wasting any more time, is there? The white arcanine barked happily, and launched herself, going from a standstill to a full run in a single bound. Several sandshrew scattered with startled squeals and whistles, burrowing hastily out of their way. A couple of the ground mice popped heads out of hastily dug holes to chatter angrily in the direction the pair had vanished. Ben laughed as he held on tight, enjoying the run almost as much as the arcanine. It didn't hurt that he was feeling her joy and excitement through his own odd empathic Aura abilities. Atta girl! he called out over the wind. Let's see how fast you can go! The white canine leveled out further, until it almost seemed as if she was flying over the terrain, paws thundering over the rocky ground. Her rider buried his face in the thick, warm fur of her neck, enjoying the feel of the run. It wasn't like Ben could watch the terrain fly past anyhow, so he might as well not chance having something end up flying into his face as they moved. After several miles, however, Jax slowed slightly, head lifting as she spotted a swaying patch of green ahead. Ben shifted as she pricked her ears forward, What's the matter, Jax? She barked once, slowing down further. The bunching of her muscles forewarned him, and Ben tightened his grip, shifting in his seat a little as she bounded up onto a boulder. He held tight to her as she leaped again immediately upon landing, twisting to the right to land atop another rock, sailing over the heads of several spiny looking plant creatures. The flowered heads turned to look up in confusion at this white thing, as she sprang lightly from the top of that stone into a clear patch of ground about halfway through the cactus 'forest.' Huh... Ben furrowed his brows in curiosity as Jax snarled warningly at the nearest maractus, twisting catlike as she bounded through the plant pokemon. A faint flicker of flames about her fangs as she did so assured the plants all leaned hastily away from her. They'd dug their roots in to recharge, however, so that was about as much movement as they could do. Didn't realize we'd run into something like that around here. I figured they'd prefer the Airidair Desert, like cacnea and cacturne do... Then again, maybe the lack of them around here was part of the attraction. Jax broke clear of the plants, and accelerated again with an irritated sneeze. Ben shifted his seat back down as she did so, freeing one hand long enough to pat her shoulder with a chuckle. Goes to show why you're considered good in rough terrain, though, doesn't it, girl? The scrubby, rocky ground was slowly giving way to a grassier, green field, causing Jax to slow as her ears pricked up, nose working busily. Now what? She sneezed, and bounded lightly across the grass, ears pricked up. Ben laughed as he heard a fox bark warningly from somewhere nearby, as Jax loped over the grass, hopping oddly from time to time. Fox territory, is it? The white arcanine barked in reply, as she hopped over a particularly large hole. Her large, dinner plate sized paws made it a lot easier for her to travel through the maze of dens at a much higher speed than any of the more equine pokemon would have. The fox barked again, popping his head out of a hole off to their left to watch the pair pass through warily. Ben chuckled at the vulpix's suspicion, but didn't try to acknowledge it. They'd be through these soon enough, and then they could stop in Moorfeldt for some directions and supplies. For pure speed, a rapidash she was not, but they'd still made very good time. Ben frowned a little as Jax lapped at the water in the pond just south of the city, considering the directions he'd been given thoughtfully. Head past the pond and south until you hit a strip of dead grass. Follow that southwest until you hit the water, and then turn south and keep to the edge of the mountains. Apparently we should run into a ravine that will lead us straight into Yorek if we do that. It seemed kind of roundabout way of getting there as opposed to just heading south, but the man had assured him that even if it wasn't the shortest, the less time spent on the blighted lands around the other city, the better, and this really was the best way to get there. He wasn't sure what that was supposed to mean, exactly. It still seemed rather out of the way, to him. Oli? A poliwag bobbed to the surface of the water, blinking at the two of them, and he chuckled at the tadpole. A second head bobbed to the surface beside the first, boggling at them. It was another tadpole pokemon, but this one looked almost like he had a set of headphones on. Another Jgseian pokemon, no doubt. Ben took a moment or two to wonder at the speed with which the species had spread over Opadekka and adapted to their new homes, then waved to the tympole and poliwag. Just passing through, no worries. He patted Jax's shoulder again. Let's get on the move again, girl. Around the lake and south, first. The great canine trotted around the pond obligingly, tail waving cheerfully. The two water types vanished beneath the waters again, leaving only a few ripples to mark their presence, as a psyduck paddled past, quacking to herself. Ben tilted his head as a yanma flitted past to land on a cattail lightly, resting in the sunlight. It surely made a pretty picture, all things considered. At least to him, the calm friendliness of the wild pokemon and their contentment with their surroundings was very soothing. It certainly would be a lovely spot to while away some summer afternoons. But he had somewhere to go at the moment, though staying here would certainly be much preferable in terms of enjoyment. 'In the poisoned town she lurks as civil as can be...' There was just one place that fit 'poisoned town' to a T. If he was right on the rest of his suspicions, he had some advantages for actually accomplishing that Quest. So, it was with a certain amount of regret that they left the pond behind and headed south. Jax picked up the pace into an easy lope once they hit the grassy fields once more, eating up the distance deceptively fast. The faint buzz of nincada was audible as the afternoon wore on, with the occasional chirp of a kricketot or venonat singing counterpoint to the thrum, but none of the insects was ever actually visible to the pair as they galloped over the grass. Jax pulled up sharply after a couple of hours, however, ears perking straight up as she stared at the moving mass of brown ahead. Well. Ben sat up on her back as he tried to make sense of the herd of massive creatures blocking their path. Those...aren't tauros, are they? The blind trainer blinked a few times in bemusement at the deep grunts and occasional bellows from the bouffalant. Jax slicked her ears back. Probably a lot easier to just go around them... Ben muttered as Jax paced a few steps nearer cautiously, sniffing at the strange, musky odor of these pokemon. A sharp bellow brought the arcanine up short and caused Ben to stiffen, however. Another bellow, as the herd milled about after the first, grunting and whuffling warily, several heads turning to stare at Jax and Ben. A massive bull shouldered his way out of the others to let out another challenging cry, pawing the ground and shaking his head as he glared at the white arcanine belligerently. ...right then. New plan. Ben leaned down close to Jax, fingers tightening in her thick ruff. The massive horns raked through the air again threateningly, and he whispered into the arcanine's ear. Roar. Jax lowered her head, bristling as she braced herself, inhaling as the bull pawed the ground again, fangs glittered in a canine grin as the beast charged, and she opened her mouth. Ben flinched as the roar rumbled between his knees as she bellowed right back at the bouffalant, a deep, terrifying reverberation. The bull let out another cry as he scrambled to reverse his charge and gallop in the opposite direction, the herd scattering every which way with more bellows and cries of fear, as Jax wagged her tail, tongue lolling out in amusement at the chaos she had just caused. Ben sighed, but patted her shoulder again. Guess it worked anyhow...let's get moving before they regroup, hmm? Man...how does anything live in that? Ben coughed as another fetid gust of air drifted up from the south. He had been planning on ignoring the one man's advice and just making a straight shot, but the poisonous atmosphere was almost as bad as running into a brick wall. Jax had flat out refused to keep going south and he couldn't blame her. So now, they paced along the strip of blackened grass, skirting the murky edges of the disgusting terrain. How could people do that to the land, even? Ben shook his head as a puddle oozed out of their way, an eye appearing out of the sludge to look up at them. Jax hurdled the grimer with a snarl, disgusted by the putrid creature. Ben shuddered. ...well, I guess that's one way to live around here, he mumbled, fighting down an urge to gag as the toxic sludge oozed on its way. I don't even want to contemplate what had to have happened to make something like that... A gust of fresher air blew past from the east, and Jax picked up her pace eagerly. Within a couple minutes, the pair were standing atop a small embankment overlooking an inlet, breathing the sea air in gratefully. Unfortunately, the reprieve wasn't going to last long. Ben felt almost guilty about turning them right into the morass of poisoned earth right after finding such a relief from it, but there was no helping it. Sorry, girl. We gotta turn south now. If we keep near the mountains, though, we should probably avoid the worst of it... Jax slicked her ears back, tail dropping as she whined and backed up a few paces, nose wrinkling in disgust. I know...I don't like it either. But we gotta get to Yorek somehow, and this way at least keeps us out of most of the worst of the toxic stuff. Until they hit the city, anyhow, since that probably was the source of all the nastiness. Ben sighed. Jax whined again, but paced forward unhappily, turning to follow the water for as long as possible, mincing along the edge of the poisoned plains. The faster you move, the sooner we can get out, girl... Ben resisted an urge to bury his face in her coat again, not wanting to subject her to the poisonous air and hide from it himself. Not that it would be much relief. Jax broke into a lope, bounding easily along the edge of the mountains that cut off the ocean from view. Where minutes had flown like seconds on the plains around Moorfeldt, here they crawled like hours. Here and there among the rocks, green tufts of oddish leaves poked out of the ground, the nocturnal plants resting during the day. A roselia froze to watch them race past, eyes wide. Poisonous though they were, the occasional plant pokemon were something of a relief that at least there was something that lived here that wasn't radioactive waste. Still, the poisonous landscape seemed depressingly endless. Imperceptibly at first, walls rose around the running canine, higher and higher. Ravine...guess we're headed the right way... Ben coughed, Jax slowing a little, wheezing a little in the toxic atmosphere. I'm sorry, girl... She sneezed grumpily and kept running. Her ears flicked back and forth restlessly, brown eyes flicking around the walls. Ben picked up on her unease, and frowned a little, trying to see if he could find anything else out there. Glittering eyes watched them pass, and he shivered a little. Ghosts. Sableye, if he wasn't mistaken...the place was haunted, too? A couple more ghosts drifted slowly over the canyon, like lost balloons. Ben hesitated a moment or two, since he could use a drifloon, but then decided they were far too high up to mess around with trying to capture. But it was something to keep in mind. Jax flattened her ears as there was a sudden rumble. Wha... Ben broke off as Jax suddenly put on a burst of speed, clutching desperately at her fur. Several rocks crashed down from above just behind them, and he yelped in surprise. What..? He turned his attention upwards. Two pairs of yellow eyes stared down at them unblinkingly. Jax..! Ben flattened himself further against the fire hound as she snarled upwards. The little golems picked up some more rocks with almost frightening ease to hurl after them again. Ben yelped as one of them shattered against a shield of energy that flickered into place only just in time. Pieces of it slid to patter onto the ground around them as Jax let out a snarl, whipping her head around to unleash a gout of fire toward the nearest one. It was too far for the fire to be a real threat to the hostile golett, but the move did give the thing pause, causing it to draw back. Another rock slammed into the ground just beside them from the other side, however, causing Ben to nearly lose his grip and fall as Jax leaped sideways in reaction. She snarled and fired a pulse of purple flames up to knock the second one reeling, the plate in her collar glowing faintly as she did so. Unfortunately, this gave the first enough time to recover from the abortive flamethrower and hurl another rock. She twisted to avoid it, but the stone still glanced off her flank, sending her spinning. Ben yelped as his grip was torn from the arcanine's fur, tumbling over the sickly ground to fetch up against the wall nearby. Jax was back up an instant later, letting out a roar of fury, though she favored the one leg. The sound echoed off the walls in the canyon, amplified by the rock walls, making it enough to cause the golem to hesitate in continuing the assault for a moment or two. Ben quickly yanked another pokeball out, a lucario appearing in a flash of energies. Faugh...where the hell is this? Anubis gagged as he flattened his ears, choking on the atmosphere. No time, there's stuff trying to kill us! Ben pointed hastily as Jax unleashed another flamethrower at the golett she'd zinged with the Dragon Pulse. It didn't get back up after that, but another rock flew toward the lucario from the first one. Gee, thanks... Anubis whirled, slamming a paw into the rock to shatter it. Owowow, bloody hell. I appreciate the warning. The lucario shook his paw as he tried to get feeling back into it. I think I mighta broke something... Yeah, it was called a rock. Now, how about you go and break the ghost thing trying to flatten us with more rocks while you're at it? Ben snapped back, as Jax fired off another pulse of purple fire that glanced off the rock face. Ghost? Yeah, I'm real useful against ghosts here, the lucario growled sarcastically, eyes narrowing as he looked up the cliff face, focusing on the yellow eyes staring down at him. A ball of shadows formed between his paws as he bounded forward, eyes narrowing as he flung the pulse of darkness up to impact upon the shelf of rock the thing was standing on. Ben flinched as the cliff crumbled, sending the thing tumbling down to get buried in a pile of rocks nearby. Don't get modest on me this late in the game Anubis... The golett didn't move as they watched it warily for several seconds, then Ben sighed and went to check the arcanine's flank. You want to walk the rest of the way to Yorek with us or go back in your pokeball, then? I'm not going to ride the rest of the way, but it's only a couple miles now... Jax huffed indignantly, though the way she limped gave the lie to her attempts to prove she was just fine, thank you very much. Nothing's broke at least, but you should really not be carrying any more weight at the very least, Ben admonished her gently, as he started down the ravine slowly. I probably should just recall you both if I'm being completely honest, but I think you'd rather stick with me for the rest of it. Anubis wrinkled his nose. If stubborn here gets into hers, I'll do the same. Otherwise, I'll keep an eye on her with you, 'kay? Jax grumbled, giving the both of them a look before limping off ahead of them, leading the way to Yorek. Ben chuckled softly. Thanks, Anubis. Edited by DarthEevee, Jan 16 2013, 03:12 PM.
