In the wettest marsh, in a pool of steam
The ghost of mist and fog is seen
Attacks will go right through, or miss
But all it wants is just-

(Kissing a monster shouldn't be that bad, but why do I have this terrible, nonspecific feeling of dread about this whole thing?) the little half-demon fox stood on the edge of the marsh area, looking at the dark fog rolling across the water. It was the middle of the day, she knew that, but somehow this place seemed... shadowy. Dark. If this would have been a couple of years ago, it would have unnerved her.

Nowadays, there wasn't much that did that.

"Well, here we are," Eisen looked over at the psychic bird. She'd said she didn't have any interest in going into the marsh, so may as well be polite, "You said you didn't want to come into the marsh, right?"

"Aw," Coyote fluffed himself up and clicked his beak - he liked having the company. But, well, she was wild, so no sense in dragging her along on their silly adventure. Coyote kind of got the feeling that Eisen didn't want anyone else to be around for this, anyways.

Eisen has a tagalong Level 42 lady Natu who's prolly going to leave now.

Team again so I don't forget:
Coyote, Bunker, Vanguard, Jack Noir, Abyss, Okkoto

Already talked to Eevee, she'll mod this when she has time. Fog Clear Quest.

3 :lp (Yes, this is all mine now, no one else touch. *wraps around thread* Yes, I have plans, my preciousss... *cough* Er, right. Yeah. That. Or something.)

The natu had stopped dead at where the swamp began, landing on a low branch and digging her talons in, eyes staring across the swamp. They took on a faint glow as she did so, expression becoming vague and abstract as if she was no longer actually seeing what was before her.

'Me and mine are less connected to the present, and so none return from the swamp...the ghosts consume our sight and we cannot resist.' Her tiny wings spread as she fluffed up on her branch, voice hollow, echoing as if from a deep well. 'The ghosts are trapped in the past, haunting, drifting, clinging. They do not let it go because they cannot.'

Fog drifted wispily across the marsh, patches pooling here and there as water spread out and deepened around them. The natu was no longer visible, but her voice still seemed to whisper in their ears. Something flickered, just caught out of the corner of one eye, but a look, and nothing was there. Was that a soft laugh, in the distance?

'The past bleeds into the present, and shapes the future. But the ghosts cannot live in the present, nor can they imagine a future. My kind see the flows of time and their stagnation traps us. Don't let it trap you or you will never return either...' Another flicker of something, darting away. But nothing that could directly be looked at.

Lights and shapes flickered at the edges of vision, dancing, taunting, and disappearing. They seemed headed toward one location, but nothing was ever there if it was looked at, and faint laughter, enticing them to share in the joke, echoed faintly on the edge of hearing. A thick bank of fog obscured a patch of trees, spanish moss dangling down to grasp at it with fuzzy finger.

'The ghosts cannot escape the past, because all they are is the past. Beware...' Another chuckle, almost familiar, came from the deepest part of a thick grove of trees ahead. More lights danced at the edge of vision, teasing, and enticing them on.

The trickster pair looked at each other as everything suddenly became 90% creepier and their tagalong disappeared into the fog. Coyote seemed to pay more attention to the bird's words, head tilted towards where she had been before. Eisen's snout was following the flickers of movement, trying to focus. To discern one thing from another, and identify what they were.

"That's deep," Coyote whispered over to Eisen, who only flicked her tail at him. Her eyes were narrowed at the clump of not-swamp that she could see, and her ears suddenly twitched at a familiar sound...

(...no way.)

"Should we check the funny lights, or- Eisen?" the bird looked over at his suddenly-human-again trainer, walking into the water without a care for her shoes, socks, or pants. She seemed unusually focused on the clump of trees, and paused only when he landed on her shoulder.

"This. We should check out this. Sound good?"

"Alright..."

Either she didn't notice her bird's discomfort or she didn't care, and continued trudging her way through the knee-deep water, heedless of if it deepened. She felt like she had to get to that patch of trees...

The mist curled around the bird and fox as they continued along, things flickering at the edge of vision everywhere. And then there was a woman, soaking her legs a bit, headed for the faint chuckle. The grove was atop a slight rise, removing the need for slogging further, once they reached it, at least. It didn't mean that everything from about the knee down was drippingly soaked and even a bit above from sloshing, but at least it wouldn't keep stewing in the swampy juices.

But that didn't matter. Clothes were easily replaced, particularly on a shapeshifter. There had been a sound from this grove, but it couldn't have been what it had sounded like. There surely was another perfectly reasonable explanation for it, and just something else that had a similar laugh, or some weird effect of swamp gas.

Still...

The trees grew close together in places, making it hard to see anywhere in the grove, but occasional flickers and flashes of light and movement caught at the corner of their eyes. But only Eisen could swear she heard whispers, just out of earshot, never quite audible, as if people were watching them and whispering comments back and forth about their weaving through the tangled trunks.

No matter how much she sharpened her hearing, words were never made out....quite. Maddeningly close, but never quite comprehensible. And then, the trees opened up into a clearing suddenly, and the whispers stopped as if cut by a knife. There was a figure in the center...

Which resolved itself into a rather stumpy little tree, stunted and gnarled almost beyond recognition. But almost for a moment it had seemed human. Silence stretched, a minute passing, and nothing more came of it. Well, that was a complete disappointment.

A roar of flame to the left, a flare of brightness against the gloom. A smaller flame flickered and lashed, as if attached to something sweeping back and forth. Was that shadowy wings spreading in the not-light above the dancing flames, preparing to take of?

Surely not...

Years and years of the bird resting on her shoulder had trained Eisen to know when Coyote was tense just by feeling the way he was gripping. She knew Coyote was nervous right now. But she was finding it really, really hard to care too much.

She groped her way though the trees, looking around occasionally like she was trying to see what was whispering. The movement caught the crow's eyes as well, but he couldn't make out much either. And it was so quiet...

(What are you all whispering about?)

At one time, she used to be very good at picking out words from whispers, especially in a crowd. People talking about her from a distance while she sat in the game corner, sometimes in the middle of the game. She could always hear when someone was talking about her.

"Eisen..." Coyote whispered, head swiveling around to try and look in all directions at once. He looked forward again when they reached the clearing, and Eisen came to a stop. The pause only lasted for a moment, and a couple of steps later...

"...it's just a tree."

She rested her hand on it for a moment just to make sure, tilting her head slightly to look around. She had been sure...

Fire. The flare of light and sound again made the pair of them look, though this time even Coyote narrowed his eyes, "Is that...?"

Eisen didn't respond, didn't seem to hear. She gulped and started towards the fire and the wings. Not an uncommon sight, but given what she had heard...

"...hello?"

3 :lp (I would have had this done two days ago, but my computer has been a butt and nuking Opera every time I'd sit down for break lately. >.>)

A sharp gust of wind whirled past the pair as they stared at the lashing flames. The wings unfurled further, as Eisen headed for them, poised to launch whatever it was into the air, but it froze as she called out. The fires flickered and stilled. The grove was completely empty, half the trees dead or more, and nothing in them.

But it still seemed almost as if for a moment, voices whispered about Eisen again. But there was nothing, just an overactive imagination, most likely. Moss dropped wings over a wilting willow tree, giving a thorough impression of a bird about ready to launch skyward. Or a dragon.

But it was still just a tree. The fire...there was nothing, no sign it had ever existed. But it had seemed so real until they'd come around the last tree. Something fluttered past, out of the corner of one eye. It didn't vanish when looked at, however, landing behind Eisen, a few steps away. The card landed face up, a large black spade pointing back the way they came. Other than that, there was nothing...

"Hey there, good looking." Suddenly, Coyote and Eisen weren't alone in the grove. The young man was lounging against a tree, green eyes seeming to devour Eisen almost hungrily as he studied her. The brown hair, gold dimmed by the shadows, was flattened under his hat as he rolled something between the fingers of his left hand. A glint of gold caught the non-light moments before he shoved the hand into the pockets of his jeans.

A tiny, almost sad smile seemed to ghost across his face for an instant, as he dropped his gaze to the card. A pause, then he straightened up to take the two steps to it and scoop it up. Whatever the expression had been a moment before, there was a shuttered, wary look in his eyes as he straightened up, flipping the card over a couple times. "I believe this is yours, isn't it." It wasn't a question, as he held the ace out to Eisen, tone flat.

As the form tensed, wings mantled for flight, Eisen broke into a bit of a trot as she headed for it before the dragon could take off, not caring what anyone said about it...

She stopped at the moss, reaching up a hand to push against it, as if making sure that she was seeing it correctly. Even Coyote leaned over and pecked it to verify while Eisen closed her hand around it slowly, gently, looking around.

"...I don't like this place," Coyote admitted finally, looking at her. His posture, his tone of voice had already been setting alarm bells off in her mind somewhere, but they were muffled and less important then usual. She didn't believe for a second that anyone here would hurt them, especially if she was right...

Eisen sighed slowly, listening to the noise in the hollow air. The flicker of movement, based on what they'd seen so far, got Eisen's sharp eye immediately. She turned, looking at it, frowning. Where did that even come from?

And then, a familiar voice. A voice she knew intimately, but had only heard in her dreams and in her mind for the past few years. Her stomach immediately twisted painfully. The feeling twisted all the way up into her heart, like someone had just shot an arrow straight into it. Finally, she turned to look at him, feeling a cold feeling ghost down her spine when her suspicions were confirmed.

"Hey, handsome," she said without thinking, a warmth in her voice that surprised even her. Her typical response back came so naturally, every feeling she had buried in the graveyard coming rushing back. She felt... terribly conflicted. Horribly conflicted. The arrow continued twisting in her heart, though it started to smolder from retaliating anger. And even on top of that, something felt... off.

She was quickly deciding that the anger and the weird feeling making her spine crawl were not that important.

"You would know," she said quietly, reaching out to cautiously take it from him. She looked down at it and flipped it over in her hands, between her fingers, fussing meaninglessly as she looked at it instead of him. Eisen was, by nature, never nervous. The rare time she was, she tended to fuss at things to keep her hands busy. And the only person who had ever made her nervous...

"...what are you doing here?"

"Where's Leo?" Coyote squawked abruptly. Eisen jerked and looked at him; she'd forgotten he was there. This whole time, the blackbird had been staring with his head tilted nearly on its side, and straightened it up just before he spoke up.

There was a flicker of...something at her automatic reply to his greeting, but it was gone in the blink of an eye, and impossible to define, a bewildering mix of so many emotions it was impossible to sort any one out to choose from before it was gone.

He dropped his hand quickly, as if afraid to touch her as she accepted the card, shoving that hand into his other pocket and backing up a step or two, almost uncertainly. He didn't reply as she commented about the card, studying it, but it seemed quite ordinary enough, though where the rest of the deck had gone was anyone's guess.

Eddy studied Eisen as she studied the card, and Coyote would get a definite momentary feeling that was...perhaps predatory? There was something about the way he looked at her, as if he couldn't get enough of the sight of her, that was off, anyhow.

But it was gone the moment Eisen looked up, as he quickly looked away, studying something else. A glance toward Coyote as he spoke up, a bit of - irritation? Surprise? - something, anyhow, at the interruption of their conversation. "Leo...is with me," he replied with a wave of his hand. The statement sounded like absolute truth, and yet...

"But why am I here, you ask?" Eddy looked at Eisen a bit sharply, then started to pace, and sighed after a momentary pause, leaning back against a tree again, rubbing a hand over his eyes and looking back over at her with another unreadable expression. "Short answer, I suppose, is you." He pointed a finger at her chest, not accusingly, holding it for a moment, then it dropped as he looked away.

"You..." He shook his head, and laughed, almost bitterly. "I don't get you. I thought I did, once...but I didn't know anything did I?"

Voices hissed everywhere, not that Coyote or Eddy seemed to hear them, hissing softly at Eisen, accusingly. Mumbled nonsense, jumbled words, nothing more. "...too good for you..."

Coyote didn't... say anything about his answer, but he settled down on Eisen's shoulder like a moody softball covered in black feathers. His little birdy eyes were distrustful, but at the moment he stayed silent and just stared.

Eisen continued to seem unaware of what her bird was thinking, almost unnaturally so, given the way they had been so close for so long. She felt completely thrown out of her element, her normally sharp and untrusting expression gone for now. Watching him pace, she wasn't sure what to think or feel. She felt like she should say something, but didn't know what, which was a feeling she wasn't used to.

Her hand went up to what was hiding under her shirt when he pointed, and she looked like she was going to say something but stopped herself. She did not like feeling speechless... especially when he continued.

"Yes you did," she said finally, halting again at the voices. She didn't react, outwardly anyways, especially when the other two didn't. Must have been... hearing things. It wouldn't have surprised her.

"I really don't want to get into this again," and she didn't. She really didn't. Though his original answer nagged at her for some reason. He was here... because of her? "How did you know I was in Opaddeka, anyways?"

Eddy continued to pace, and a nasty little laugh seemed to echo from one of the trees. It was one of those laughs that the rich and snobby made. As before, no one seemed to hear it but Eisen. "Sure I did..." he muttered softly, almost bitterly, still not looking at her. His hands disappeared into the pockets of his pants once again, as he leaned against the trunk, staring off into the swamp pensively.

He didn't appear inclined to push further on that, though Eisen's question certainly forestalled anything like that from happening. For the moment anyhow. You aren't exactly hiding, are you? he countered easily, with a half-shrug. Black crow, beautiful woman, those eyes...

Eddy met her gaze at that, unable to resist, it seemed, staring into the red and blue for several long moments, with a sort of wary, wounded sort of expression. I liked your hair long, though. Shame you cut it. He sighed.

He shifted his weight uncomfortably, glancing to Coyote for a long moment, before sighing and turning away, staring back into the heart of the grove. As to here...well, you should know that one yourself. There's something about this place... Eddy trailed off, not finishing that sentence.

A pause, then in an almost too-brisk tone, he added, But you still don't want to talk to me, so I'll let you continue whatever you're doing here and leave you alone. It was one of those tones that indicated the person was being artificially cheerful, and saying something they didn't necessarily mean, in some fashion.

The voices hissed again, turning nasty. ...liar...cheater...he can do so much better... Another faint, nasty giggle, the kind hidden behind hands and backs. The kind that those petty sorts that lived on rumor and decrying others practiced.

...cold, heartless witch, using him... This time, though, Coyote could catch the edges of the vicious whispering, though it was so faint, and hard to make out. But something out there certainly had it in for his trainer...

(... I must finally be losing it. How do they not hear this?) she finally couldn't keep the urge quiet, and glanced around. Somehow, she knew that this place should be completely silent, yet still the whispers continued, and she felt her heart twist again vaguely. Even despite that, she blushed a little when he said beautiful, and she would have glanced at the ground if he hadn't chosen that moment to look at her. She felt like she had to say something, anything as they gazed at each other, but nothing sounded right, or good enough.

Coyote continued to be silent, hunkered down on Eisen's shoulder and glaring with an intense expression only a crow was truly capable of. His red eyes were narrow, and flickered with a glow occasionally.

"There is something about this place," she agreed quietly, looking around again. Nothing good, if the hair standing up on the back of her neck was any indication... Her attention immediately went back to him when he spoke again, and she took a step or two closer, "That's not what I meant-"

This time, the voices made her stop fully, composure crumbled a bit. Now she was really looking for who was whispering. What the fuck did they know about her? They couldn't know a damn thing about her. She had never lied to him. She wasn't cold, wasn't heartless, at least before. Now, maybe... But still, the pain twisted again as if reminding what had been. What she still felt. She looked a tiny bit frayed when she looked back at him, "I do want to talk to you, if you'll listen. I meant that I didn't want to get into a fight..."

"Eisen," Coyote said suddenly, having looked around suddenly, himself. She didn't seem to hear him yet.

Eddy stopped as Eisen took a step after him. There was silence now, whatever had been whispering was silent at last, leaving the two of them alone with Coyote. He hesitated, though didn't turn to face her again, appearing to be looking off into the heart of the grove. Not like I want to fight either... he muttered softly, shaking his head, still not looking at them.

For all that Eisen and Eddy were alone now, there were a sharp feeling of malevolence sharpening for the honchkrow on the former's shoulder. Malicious whispers, accusations. ...too good for the likes of her... A heartless laugh. What makes her so special anyhow...

There was nothing there, though...except a faint flicker just behind them. But looking, nothing. None of this was anything Eisen noticed, either, this time. It was as if whatever had decided that the bird was a better target, perhaps. But there wasn't anything there, just the occasional flicker of light at the edges of vision. Swamp gas, probably.

Right?

But how am I supposed... He stopped whatever he'd been about to say with an effort, shaking his head, leaning against the trunk with a tired sigh. Eddy shifted his weight from foot to foot warily, one hand tugging the brim of his hat low over his eyes, though he was still looking into the distance and not at either of them. What do you want to talk about, then?

There was a flicker overhead, like a pinpoint of fire, circling slowly.

The whispers and the feelings didn't seem to affect the dark bird the same way it affected Eisen. Instead of getting upset and unhinged, the crow just seemed like he was getting mad. His eyes were flickering red and purple, and his feathers fluffed out like he was trying to intimidate something.

"Eisen," he said quietly, though didn't take his eyes off of the man in front of them.

Eisen didn't notice, and even allowed herself to look slightly hopeful, clasping her hands in front of her and looking at him. Maybe... maybe this was a chance? Still, even after all this time of thinking about it... she didn't know what she wanted to say. Well... aside from asking why. Lots of why.

"Eisen," Coyote turned his head to look at her, but she still didn't hear.

She almost asked about what Eddy started to say, but it didn't seem important compared to what she was thinking now. Looking at the ground for a second, she licked her lips as she thought about it, and took a step towards him again, reaching a hand up like she was going to put it on his shoulder. "I... I just want to know. Why-"

"Eisen!" Coyote calmly leaned over and nipped her ear with his beak, making her jerk away from the man and look at the bird finally. "That's not him!"

"...what?" she said, barely whispering, and looked to see what Eddy thought of it. Coyote pushed off of Eisen's shoulder and towards him, but swooped like he just wanted to land on the man's shoulder, his eyes still glowing with psychic power.

3 :lp (>.> I swear there was something else I'd been planning but I can't for the life of me figure out what at this point, but I don't think it hurts to let this move on in this fashion. I blame Christmas and children closing Opera on me for the delay.)

Eddy straightened up with a jerk as Coyote bit Eisen's ear. "Hey..!" He paused at the bird's accusation, blinking once at that, startled. A slight frown, as the whispering faded out entirely, leaving them alone.

Any psychic attack at all did absolutely nothing, if Coyote attempted such. It was as if there was nothing there at all. Just empty air. But...there was an 'Eddy' to land on, touching down on his shoulder easily. He was leaning his head away from the bird a bit warily, glancing from Coyote to Eisen and back with an expression that was quite clearly not sure what to make of this.

Wait, what? Whoever or whatever he was was turning out to be quite the contradiction. But you couldn't blame him, since the small honchkrow had just bitten his own trainer a second ago. Who would really be completely fine with having something like that near enough to stab an eye out?

"Who do you think I am, then?" 'Eddy' asked Coyote, warily, head still leaning away from the bird, ready to react if the honchkrow decided to get violent. "And why do you think I'm not me, for that matter?"

The black bird seemed surprised that there was something there to land on, but he was still giving the man a dirty look as the glow from his eyes faded out. He had at least half confirmed what he was thinking, at least. The bird thought back to the poem while Eisen looked halfway between being upset and being mad. With a bit of surprise still in there. She was also torn. Very torn. She wanted to believe this was him, and yet... she reached back to smooth down the prickling hairs on the back of her neck.

"Coyote?" she said after a second. The bird was quiet after the man's question, fluffing up like a softball instead. He didn't act like he was going to peck any eyes out, but he certainly didn't look happy either. "Why-?"

"Because when I try to read his mind, there's nothing there. Even with you, I can at least feel something, even if I can't get into it. And," he turned his head to squint at the man.

"I think you're that Fog Clear monster we're supposed to be looking for!"

There was a long silence, as Coyote's proclamations seemed to echo slightly in the small clearing, the silence stretching as 'Eddy,' or whatever he was sitting on, stared at the bird with an unreadable expression. Was that a narrowing of the eyes or just imagination? It wasn't more than a few moments, but it seemed like an eternity, before the figure looked to Eisen, then back to the bird. This was going to be it, where it all went horribly wrong.

'Eddy' started to laugh. Really? I'm a monster now? He leaned against the tree as he laughed at that, glancing toward Eisen as if inviting her to share in the joke. A moment later, however, he seemed to realize himself and looked away quickly. They weren't exactly friends after all, or they weren't supposed to be, let alone anything else.

He straightened up after a moment, shaking his head. A monster... He snorted softly, shaking his head. I'm not a monster. He hesitated, glancing warily at Coyote still on his shoulder for a moment, then at Eisen, then stared up at the sky. The flickering prick of light danced on, out of sight, and he sighed. It can get very lonely...

It was more to himself, then he shook his head. Eddy or not, he still looked exactly like him, and felt nice and humanly squishy shoulder-wise to the bird. Something very weird was going on, indeed. I just...want to know why. What else might not have been mentioned...never mind. Probably shouldn't hear the answer anyway. He shook his head, turning away abruptly, glancing sideways at Coyote.

What would you do if I was a monster, anyway? Whether it was directed at Coyote or Eisen, or both, it was impossible to tell.

The logical part of Eisen agreed with the bird once she pieced everything together. If she was right about the poem, and the missing word was 'kiss', then it would make sense for the monster to be a shapeshifter too. What better way to get a kiss out of someone then to be exactly what they wanted to kiss?

The emotional part of Eisen, the part she thought was long dead, wasn't sure what to believe.

She could only smile warily at the man laughing, unable to bring herself to laugh too. It almost seemed like this thing was reading her mind... because she knew that as of now, she was as much of a monster as any of the HM guardians were. Eisen put her hands in her pockets and looked up too, watching the bit of light dance away into nothing.

(I think this is the first time in a long while that I've been at this much of a loss for what to do.)

Coyote stayed adamantly on the man's shoulder and puffed up. He was utterly convinced that he was correct and wasn't going to take anything else for an answer at this point. But the question wasn't for him to answer.

"If you were the monster we're looking for... I'd want to know if there's any other way to get the HM aside from... kissing you," she looked away at the ground. If it wasn't real... then she couldn't kiss him. She just couldn't.

Eddy cautiously reached up to scratch the puffed up bird on his shoulder's chestfeathers idly as Coyote looked all adamant about things, tilting his head a little thoughtfully. He studied Eisen, expression going serious from the amusement of a few moments ago.

"All it wants is just..." he muttered softly after a minute or so of silence. Whether or not he was Eddy, he still sounded exactly like him, and he shook his head after a minute. "Always looking for a way around the rules, though, aren't you? You're one for that sort of thing..." He sighed, and dropped his fingers from Coyote's feathers, before leaning back against a tree, resting one foot up against it.

One hand, the one that didn't have a honchkrow on the shoulder and in the way of such, slipped behind his head to cushion it as he watched Eisen. "Sometimes, though, things are what they are, and you can't really get around it." He laughed again, though it sounded a little sadder this time than the other laughs, a bit wistful and lonely.

"Still...what makes you sure that a kiss is the only answer anyhow?" he added after a pause, tilting his head and raising a brow slightly. "But I guess there's not much else that rhymes with 'miss' that would make sense, is there?" Eddy shrugged after a moment, careful not to forcefully displace the bird in the process.

"But, what's so bad about a kiss anyhow?"

Eisen started to respond but had to bite her tongue and reign in her emotions before she felt like she could respond. She had to remind herself that this was not him. There's no way it could be... a few of the things he'd said, which she had overlooked before, made it so plainly obvious.

"It happens to be a habit of mine," she said quietly, unable to completely squash the affection in her voice. Coyote didn't try to snap at the man's finger, though he continued to look like a puffed up softball of feathers and didn't relax.

This time, his laugh got a little chuckle out of Eisen, even though she felt her heart breaking slightly. It may not have been him... but it sounded like him. And that made it hard. (Trust me, monster, I understand lonely nearly as well as you do.)

"I'm not sure, and that's why I'm asking. Even if the answer seems obvious from the poem... maybe it's not so obvious," she crossed her arms and watched, Coyote still holding onto the man's shoulder.

Eisen sighed a little and looked away, looking around the grove. Once upon a time, all the darkness would have bothered her, but not anymore. Once upon a time, when a kiss meant something...

"...it's the last happy memory I have of him, and I'd rather it not be replaced by an imposter. No offense or anything."

"Some rules can't be got around, really. You got to finish the poem and follow through." 'Eddy' dropped his hand from Coyote's feathers with a sigh. "And I don't get what would be replacing anything anywhere, here, myself..."

He shoved his hands into his pocket, staring upwards. "Life deals you a hand of cards and there ain't much you can do about it, except deal with the draw. I didn't deal the cards either, here." He stood there for several seconds, as if trying to make some sort of decision, letting the silence stretch out.

He looked out across the marsh, looking tired. "All I know is that someone shows up, like you...and here we are. And off we go, round and round, and then they go, and then what am I? I still remember..." He glanced toward Eisen, then away, as if not feeling like he had a right to do so, hunching down slightly against the tree, drawing within himself and staring up at the sky above again.

"...it wasn't all that high up, anyway, still..." he muttered, then laughed bitterly again. What the hell. "I don't choose anything. YOU are the one that has made all the choices here. I am here because you are here. It's up to you to figure out the rest of it. And then you can go off like the rest of them."

He didn't even bother trying to hide the bitterness, turning away and heading into the swamp. "The poem is incomplete. It's up to you to complete it, and that's all I'll say on the matter." He was leaving, either way. It wasn't like 'he' forgot the others, or anything...and they came, a few, and 'he' remembered...and then they were gone, and all he had was what they left behind.

He broke into a run, heading away from Eisen. Enough was enough.

"...but if you fold, and keep playing, you get a new hand," she said quietly, watching. It was something like what she had done... given up for a while before trying again. But, she hadn't really gotten to the point of... actually trying, had she? She hadn't asked for a new hand yet, instead just idling on the sidelines and watching.

She let her arms finally drop back to her sides, shifting her weight as he continued talking. With everything, she'd nearly forgotten her real purpose for being here... getting another HM. Eisen couldn't bring herself to kiss him, though. Even if the monster seemed like it was built of her memories of him...

(You took that form because you used my memories. So if no one was here... you wouldn't have a form, would you?)

The man took off running, and Coyote squawked and jumped into the air, flapping to land in a tree. Eisen didn't move to follow, instead sighing and reaching up to fuss at the chain and ring around her neck...

"You chose to break our promise, Eddy. I don't think..." she stopped suddenly, looking like she just realized something.

"You know what else rhymes with miss, besides kiss? Promise. He promised, and then he broke it. You remember that too, don't you? You remember everything I remember about him. There has to be something else in there for you."

But if she was alone, it wouldn't matter anymore. She dredged up the happiest times she could remember with him. The first time they met, flying over Kanto with Leo, the excitement he'd shown when she showed him her greatest tricks, teaching the awkward young man how to dance...

"Haha, never ever?"

"No... I can't dance."

"Oh, everyone says that. Come on, I'll teach you."

"Eisen..."

"...humor me, handsome?" she remembered putting her arms around his neck and smiling up at him, the smile she used when she was trying to convince him to do something he didn't want to do. "Please?"

Eddy slowed a little as Eisen shouted after him, and stopped, at the very edge of the grove of mossy trees they'd been standing in. He hesitated there, at the edge of vision, almost as ethereal as the mist, sometimes visible as it filled the air, sometimes more of a shape indistinguishable from the trees.

Something flickered at the edge of vision again. "But aren't promises made to be broken?" A soft giggle, as the voice whispered in the edge of consciousness, at the border between dream and reality, there, and yet not, at the same time, dancing around Eisen's ears. Never quite heard, but impossible to miss at the same time. "Broken dreams, broken promises, broken hearts..."

Whatever it was, it wasn't the...whatever that looked like Eddy. He still hesitated at the edge of the grove, as seconds that seemed like hours crawled past. Lights danced in the corners of the eye, never there when looked at directly, but always just out of sight. "What's in a promise, anyway? Lies...or love? Emptiness, or hope..." The voice giggled again, whispering, there and not there at all, no form.

Eddy didn't seem able to hear it, nor Coyote. Indeed, after the minute that felt like hours had past of his hesitating there, he half turned as a patch of fog cleared a little, making him almost visible. "...so it does." Eddy adjusted his cap, then shoved his hands in his pockets as the fog thickened again, fading from view.

His voice, however, seemed to still come from the direction he'd run in, thankfully, when it came a moment later. "Fine, I'll bite then. A promise. What can you promise me, then? What do you think I want?"

"...what indeed. What promise would you keep? Empty words...mean less than nothing..." The voice whispered again, in the back of Eisen's mind.

Eisen watched the copy of her ex husband among the mist, listening to the whispers on the edge of her mind. There was a distinctive, torn bitterness in her soul at the words. While she may now believe that promises were worthless, she didn't at one time. What she had thought was a simple promise at the time had ended up being her complete undoing a few years later. She looked around, lights glittering at the edges of her vision as she kept the corner of her eye on the ghostly man.

Coyote stretched his head out from where he was still sitting in the tree, eyes narrowing as the fog thickened. Slowly, Eisen's gaze was drawn back towards the voice, even though it didn't seem like there was anything there. She licked her lips as she considered her answer. What could she possibly promise to a ghost?

"I think... I think you're lonely. I think... that you want someone here with you. Which is why you lure people to their deaths. Why you steal memories. I can't promise that... but. I can promise that I'll come back to visit you. It's not... much. But it's something to look forward to?"

Silence answered the words Eisen spoke, as the fog swirled around them all. The lights flickered, winking out one by one, leaving the bird and fox-woman alone in the fog. The silence was almost as oppressive as the taunting voices earlier.

It was as if there was no other living things in the world but them. A crushing sort of emptiness, nothing else there. A momentary patch of fog drifting through made even Coyote seem as ethereal as a ghost to Eisen, and vice-versa. But it was gone in an instant, just a faint drifting wisp, making its lonely way into the rest of the low-lying cloud of mist, any identity it might have had lost in the rest of the same grayness everywhere.

A moment of individuality, then...once more, nothing but a formless part of a larger whole...

"We're always alone..." The voice whispered from behind them, achingly sad, in its own way. A turn, and there was 'Eddy' once more, but there was something in the back of his eyes that was completely alien, sad, and longing, as he studied Eisen again, almost hungrily.

"It...would be so nice to have someone come back...someday. Just once..." It was impossible to mistake the hopeful longing in the tone, as he continued to stare at her, hesitating still. "Will...will you give me a memory of my own, to remember your promise with?" He held a hand out to her, in a clear invitation of some sort.

He couldn't stop looking like Eddy, but there was a faint, almost dreamlike quality to him, at this point; and a shadow in the back of the familiar green eyes that spoke of something perhaps as old as time itself looking back out of them as they watched her, worried, hopeful.

Eisen tilted her head slightly as the fog thickened, leaving them in formless white and pale gray, alone as the 'monster' that lived here. She would have been unnerved if she hadn't been in plain, formless black before, overtly hostile instead of just... painfully alone, like this place was. She glanced to her bird, black feathers obscured to gray, red eyes without their lively shine. Coyote watched the bit of mist go by, silently.

The demon woman felt a familiar twisting pain in her heart at the whispers, and turned without flattening the hairs on the back of her head. He was right there behind her, so close that she had to tilt her head back a little to look up at him, like she always had before. Her normally stone-blank expression was riddled with cracks of both pain and understanding, and a touch of something else.

"Of course I will," she put her hand in his and moved close, her other arm coming up to rest on his shoulder, hand behind his neck. She smiled up at him, even knowing it wasn't him. It wouldn't hurt to pretend... for a few moments.

"Shall we dance?"

His own hand went around her waist, as she placed her hand on his shoulder. A small smile graced his face, washing away most of the sadness, for a moment leaving him almost unrecognizable from her memories of Eddy, before they whirled off in an impromptu dance.

If there was any doubt remaining this wasn't Eddy, that dance, magical as it was, proved it. Even after convincing him to learn, it was unlikely he had ever been this good. Still, did it really matter? For that matter, the dance certainly wasn't anything that Eisen would have done, nor did it seem likely that she would have been particularly good.

For a few minutes, however, the world was magical, and it didn't matter. The dance whirled through the mist and fog, the rest of the world somehow unreal and ethereal as they whirled through a pas de deux somehow.

And then, the moment had to end, eternity come crashing down around their ears, and reality reassert the fact that they were standing up to their knees in muck, some short distance from the grove where they'd started.

'Eddy' was holding one of Eisen's hand, bowed over it, as if to give it a kiss, though he never actually did so. He hesitated, then sighed a little wistfully, taking her hand in both his, folding it shut around a small circular object. And then, there was nothing but mist, mud, and memories.

"Remember your promise and I will keep mine..." It was felt more than heard, and only something Eisen could hear. When she opened her hand to look, there was a simple gold wedding band, too large for any but perhaps her thumb, of her own hand.

So yeah. You have Fog Clear. As an RP condition, you will have to come back here at least once sometime in the future or it will be lost (though no specific timeframe is required here, just when story appropriate). Though, waiting a century could get you in trouble. :P

Putting the ring on in some fashion will do whatever magic you want it to.

4 :lp Collecting the 9 LP from this thread between now and the last time.

For a moment, Eisen was happy again.

She sighed and opened her eyes, smiling with just a tiny quirk at the corner of her mouth. Her other hand dropped to her side, and she cocked her head a tiny bit to the side as she watched but didn't say anything. Surprise crossed her face when she felt something in her hand, and she didn't even blink before she realized that he was gone.

"..." she quietly looked around, hearing the water slush around her legs as she drew her hand up to her chest automatically. The voice resonated in her wounded heart, and she stopped when it did. There was nothing around... nothing she could see. Once she felt sure of this, she looked down and opened her hand, eyes widening in surprise.

Her opposite hand was shaking as she gently picked it up, turning the golden band over in her fingers as she looked at it. There was a temptation, for a moment, to try it on a certain finger but it was pretty obvious it was too big. Sighing, the breath shaking far more then she would have liked it to, she slipped it on over her thumb. It disappeared and dissolved, the golden sparkles absorbing into her skin. It didn't make a tattoo, though she felt an odd tingle on her heart.

This time, she couldn't keep her breath from shaking, and buried her face in her hands, making a single quiet sob.

"...Eisen?"

She moved only one hand away from her face, tears in the visible blue eye, to see her little bird sitting on a branch sticking out of the water. The crow squawked quietly at her, wordless but comforting. It got a few shaky chuckles out of her as she brushed the tears from her eyes.

"Stop giving me that look... I'll live," she held her hand out for him, which he fluttered into. "I've lived so far."

The honchkrow studied her, but seemed to know better then to ask. "We going home, then?" he leaned into her hand as she scratched at his head and neck. The woman sighed a little bit, able to control the shake this time, and looked around.

"...no. Not quite yet. I get the feeling that place would eat me if I tried now," she cast a look back at the grove, quiet and mysterious as it had been before, tiny motes of light ghosting in the distance. A tiny smile quirked at the corner of her mouth.

"Let's take a short walk, hm?" she put the bird on her shoulder, where he belonged, and started trudging through the muck again. She had no idea where she was going, just that she was going to get there... at some point.

Eisen placed the black bird back on her shoulder where he belonged, water sloshing around her pants as she walked. Eventually, the foggy marsh and its warm water started to slope uphill, leaving the pool of water behind.

The ground didn't stay level very long, just enough to obscure the Ignis Fatties from view, sloping down again to another pool of water. This one was gigantic, but still murky. Not with toxins, just with silt and muck. Eisen was right at the edge of the water when she stopped abruptly, head snapping up to look around.

"Huh..."

"It's a big fuckin' pond!" Coyote ruffled his feathers, sniffing in distaste as he looked around. Eisen's hand went up to flatten the hairs on the back of her neck. She could have sworn...

"Do you remember, when we were in Johto..." she trailed off, feeling silly all of a sudden. There was no way...

"What?" the black bird tilted his head at her, and Eisen chuckled and shook her head. The odd feeling was a welcome distraction, at least for now. Still...

"Ah... nothing. Let's go home," she scratched the bird's feathered chest, disappearing in a tendril of shadow.

And teleporting out, thanks you two. Especially you, 'vee.
