"How many assholes we got on this ship anyhow?"
|
As some of you will remember, 45 started an event a few years back that destroyed the Presidential Place and assassinated President Cynthia Davis. This event was never completed and therefore, Cynthia was never killed. I'm officially changing the name of the forum back to Presidential Place and it will henceforth no longer be known as a ruin. However, during the War Between Jgsei and Opaddeka, KJ presented a new President, one not named but referred to as a male. This is a teaser that corrects the timeline and gives that man a name. A crowd was gathering outside of the high stone gates which marked the boundaries of the Presidential Place, a rustic stone mansion in the Gothic Revival Style. Security had been stepped up, and the military could be seen working the crowd, standing like statues before the guard house, or walking the ramparts. There was even a sniper or two to be glimpsed behind the narrow windows of the bastions. Something was definitely up, but no one knew what, only that the seldom seen leader intended to address the nation, and every reporter in the country was fighting tooth and nail to be a part of the press conference that was scheduled to air at exactly 2:00 P.M. Presently 1:45 P.M. the locals had been waiting outside since well before Noon, vying for the best places from which to see and hear the President that won the War. Not everyone viewed this man with the same respect. Many saw him as a mere politician, and not deserving the same respect as one who'd fought and risked their life on the battlefield. Some thought former President Cynthia Davis, the last League President, would have handled the whole nasty affair of the invading army more effectively than the Lawyer everyone was waiting so impatiently to hear. However, Davis had not been elected for a second term in office. The economy was weakening, stock prices were dropping, and a little better than half the voting populous had liked the fast-talking lawyer who spoke confidently that he could drag the economy out of the gutter and rebuild the job market single-handedly. People liked to believe in miracles. He had delivered his promise, but not in the way he'd intended. During his second year in office, after months of criticism for not showing the snappy results he'd assured the nation were due, Escennia was destroyed by the invading army, led by former Pokemon Professor Melissa Salix, now known only as Xilas. This had the awkward effect of putting an unexpected demand on the job market. Weapons were needed, medical supplies, and vehicles. Then following the war, building materials and workers. Supplies was needed quickly and couldn't be manufactured fast enough. The job market boomed and local companies thrived. With the unpleasant side effect that the country had suffered civilian losses, you might say the lawyer had been given a lucky break. Or perhaps not so lucky. Election time was just around the corner and his popularity was not nearly what it had been. He needed to get the people back on his side - because Davis was running for re-election again. With the populous still nervous about the blood spilled on their own soil, he worried that Davis' new angle to protect the people and strengthen their defenses would lose him the election. He needed to assure the country that they were perfectly safe and the catastrophe wasn't going to happen again. It was now five minutes until two and the reporters were allowed past the guard tower into the courtyard where a lectern had been set up on a small stage before the palace doors. Any moment now the President himself would make his appearance. Cameras were flashing right up until the old town clock, one block away, chimed twice. The oak front doors opened and security stepped out first. With the coast clear, a tall, lean, suited figure stepped out into the sunlight. His brown eyes squinted at the sun, creasing a face that looked much younger than the forty three years he claimed. Salt and pepper hair added a touch of prestige, but all in all, his was a generic face, and not at all memorable. "Ladies and Gentlemen!" Another man who'd stepped up to the lectern to begin the proceedings. He was no one special, just another spokesperson. "I give you, President Earl Kingly the Third!" The crowd beyond the wall cheered, and the poor politician was blinded once more by the flash of two dozen cameras mere feet away. He nodded and smiled, raised a hand to wave at the crowd until they had settled down enough for him to speak. At last his moment had come. "Thank you for coming out today. People of Opaddeka, my friends and neighbors, today we stand on the precipice of a great adventure. Opaddeka is about to embark on a journey like no other, and it pleases me to announce that negotiations with the nation of Jgsei have been underway for many months since the conclusion of the war." Here the President was interrupted by an onslaught of questions by the reporters, demanding to know what sort of negotiations, and if Jgsei was taking responsibility for the destruction Xilas had caused. "The Tribal Chieftains of Jgsei have convened and agreed that this atrocity might not have happened if they had not secluded their country from the rest of the world for so long. They might have been able to warn us of the rogue tribe forming at their southern borders and thus, avoided much grievance on both sides. As you are aware, the unusual nature of Jgsei's natural resources jams signals from satellites and other surveillance equipment, rendering it very difficult to communicate or otherwise see what happens in Jgsei. However, that does not mean that communication is impossible." Of course this was interrupted by even more questions and quite a few accusations of failing to protect their country when it needed it most. The President did not take any questions but resolutely pressed forward. "In the interest of peace between Opaddeka and Jgsei, a treaty has been formed that will allow our citizens to travel north into Jgsei territory to train and learn about their people. Given recent circumstances, Jgsei is forbidding travel of their own people into Opaddeka at this time, as they understand such an occupation would not be in the best interest of peace. Permitting us to venture into their country to explore, is a gesture of good faith and effort to put the past behind us." More questions, the one warranting an answer being the safety of trainers actually entering Jgsei. "As was witnessed during the war, trainers in Jgsei have a significant advantage over our own. Training Pokemon is a way of life to a people who largely put technology aside. Whereas for us, and much the rest of the world, pokemon training is a novelty and sport. It is not surprising then, to find Jgsei filled with trainers and pokemon with far more experience than even our most elite trainers. It would not be in our trainers' best interests to let just anyone walk across the borders into unknown dangers. So, a test has been devised by the Grand Council of Opaddeka and the Jgsei Chieftains to ensure that all who enter their country are capable of defending themselves against the local wildlife and the dangers of travel through remote wilderness." More excitement. More questions. More of the President politely pretending not to notice. He had yet to deliver the most important news of all. "During October of this year, a competition will be held on the military owned, league sanctioned, resort island known as Genesis. All trainers are invited to attend. Those interested in traveling to Jgsei will be pitted against native pokemon of that region of a graduating difficulty. They will be given a taste of the dangers they would be facing daily if they were to go there. Should they pass the challenge, they will be given a ticket for safe passage into Jgsei. They will be furnished with upgrades to their equipment to permit them to maintain continuous contact with Opaddeka as well as emergency assistance if needed. The ticket will also double as a means to identify themselves to the local people, few which are likely to be familiar with our language." There were cheers and cries of outrage both. Everyone was curious about Jgsei, some enough so to put aside their fears of the warrior nation and talk about going to Genesis in October to try the challenge for themselves. Finally, a question made it through the racket and the President decided it was worth answering. "No, trainers do not have to earn the ticket to enter Jgsei. However, there are many obstacles they must face - passage into Jgsei is not an easy one on foot and we will not ferry anyone who cannot show their having passed the challenge. The barrier mountains have been called impassable for a reason - the dense fog and near vertical inclines offer no natural means of crossing. The waters are thick with treacherous whirlpools, the smallest of which are easily a mile across. As I have mentioned, without modification, navigation instrumentation will not function properly. You will only be able to obtain these modifications on Genesis and only after having completed the challenge. Neither we, nor Jgsei, will be held responsible for individuals who enter Jgsei of their own volition without going through proper protocol. However, Jgsei will not prevent it, and neither will we, but you are advised of the danger and the difficulties you will face without the assistance of the Pokemon League." The President quickly stifled the next wave of questions and waved another man onto the stage, one had been seated nearby but well off camera. By now, he was a familiar face in every home with a television, if only because he wasn't human. The General of the Opaddeka Military Establishment, Floyd T. Scavian, walked up the podium, shook hands with the President, and nodded his eyeless, ugly alien head at the cameras. Somewhere Davis, who was sitting in her living room while the press conference aired, laughed so hard she started to choke. If Kingly seriously thought that mug would win him any votes, he was more desperate than she thought. "At this time I'm going to pass the mike to General Floyd, current director of Genesis. He will take questions and better inform you of what to expect in October." The President stepped back and let the orange alien take the stage while he was escorted back into the grand building by secret service personal and followed by various aides. "Good afternoon." rasped Floyd's deep and inhuman voice. "I'd like to begin by telling you a little about Genesis. The Military, in conjunction with the Pokemon League, have recognized that this nation's strength lies in its pokemon trainers. The military alone did not win the war. Guns and technology could not give us the advantage. But you did. Each and every civilian who marched onto the battlefield tipped the odds in our favor. With this undeniable evidence of real strength and skill, Genesis was built as a training facility to help our nation's trainers hone their skills and share their knowledge, their experience, with younger generations." There wasn't a person present that could argue this point. Many cheered, and a few frowned, wanting to judge the military's weakness but unable to be heard over the applause. "Using the technology and funding available to the Military, Genesis was formed and built in a secluded environment we deemed relaxing and capable of promoting friendship, positive energy and goodwill to all who visit. Genesis Island is not merely a training facility. It's a resort where the weary mind can rest and recuperate. During October, we welcome everyone to Genesis to participate and watch the Jgsei Entrance Tournament take place. Details about the challenge will be released closer to the starting date of the tournament. In the meantime, please know that all who enter will be facing wild creatures possessing a raw power that trumps anything in Opaddeka, except perhaps the elusive Legends scattered across the land. You will not be permitted the use of any healing items during or between matches, nor will you be permitted to go the pokecenter between matches. This tournament will simulate being caught in the wilds of Jgsei without assistance. You may withdraw from the challenge at any time and rechallenge at a later date." Floyd stopped, cleared his throat, and took a deep breath. "Now, I imagine you have a few questions for me. I'll try my best to answer them." As Floyd said, actual details on the mechanics of the challenge will not be released until a little later. But if you have questions, feel free to ask them. Edited by Frac, Jun 29 2012, 05:20 PM.
