This was going to be, easily, the hardest thing he'd ever had to do for a long time. After all, he was one of the few trainers in Opaddeka - the very, very few - to have ever challenged a Tier II Gym. He was the very first in a long time to even walk into the halls of the third and final tier. But this was not walking in for the sake of walking in and challenging the leader, no. There was something far more important at stake here and Elijah needed help from the one person in this region that could give it. As he made his way into the Slumber Legendary Gym, he was overtaken with a sense of pride. His shoes were removed and left near the entrance was was custom, and then, with his Rayquaza flying right behind him, he walked onto the main floor. The darkened hall was, as usual, quiet. "Samson!" shouted the eldritch monster. What Elijah came here for was more than a battle - it was knowledge. It was unheard of for a Gym Leader to apprentice themselves to another, more powerful one. But then again, a lot of what he did was unheard of. This was for the improvement of his Gym and the furthering of his understanding of Legendary Pokémon - not to mention the fact that Elijah had the machinations forming in the back of his mind to go and capture a few more of them. Why not, after all? He had the funding and the drive to go and do it. If he set his mind to the task, then by all means he had to go and complete it. It was going to be the driving force that led him to finishing the one goal he had set for himself in his innumerable lifetime. He composed himself, then dropped to one knee, head bowed slightly, arm resting atop the raised knee. "I wish to learn from you." He would learn from the legendary man himself - there would be no failure. |

3 ![]() The gyms had seen a lot more action in the past year. Reforms to the challenge system, where trainers could turn up to the Tier I gyms with three pokémon and have a fair fight, led to more people challenging - and beating - the likes of Boe and George. A few of the stronger trainers had even gone after the Tier II gyms. But Tier III? No chance. Nobody had even set foot in one of those. Until Elijah, that is. "Elijah Morvante." Samson was sat on his customised throne as Elijah entered the gym, and nodded in greeting. "I was wondering when you'd come here." As it turns out? You catch a legendary, word spreads about it. Samson stood up, and walked towards the fellow gym leader, his attention shifting between him and the legendary dragon accompanying him. "Catching a legendary pokémon is no mean feat, especially a pokémon like Rayquaza." Samson brushed a stray strand of hair behind his ear. "You have potential, that much is obvious. You have your own gym, you have Rayquaza. I've been the leader of this gym for a number of years now, and I've never met someone worthy of being my apprentice." He looked from Elijah and Rayquaza, and back again. "You may be the first." Samson motioned for Elijah to stand, and nodded. "Yes, I can teach you. But first, tell me about your encounter with Rayquaza. I heard the stories, I saw the aftermath on the news, but I'd like to hear your perspective." |

3 ![]() As to be expected, this affair was... interesting. Elijah and Samson were two very, very different people. However, they had one thing in common: a quest for greater knowledge and power. Simply, Samson had the knowledge that Elijah wanted. With his infinite lifetime, he would have forever to perfect every art and an ageless body at the pinnacle of maturity that would help him stay at peak form for eternity. It was great for a martial artist. For a Pokémon trainer, however, it was different. It came only with experience and learning. Learning that took time. But why not start now? At the compliment, however, he just chuckled. "There are others," he commented immediately, thinking straight away of both Steely and Alex. But that was different. This was his time to shine as a trainer. Slowly, Elijah rose, without the assistance of his hands on the floor, folding his arms in front of his chest as Samson made his simple request. The story was an interesting one and he wanted to hear it. How best to tell it? None could ever comprehend... and, by now, he had accepted his nature. While his eyes were hidden behind those polarised sunglasses, it would not be unbearably obvious... but even the way he moved, and the way his aura felt, one could tell he had immense power behind him. "My death, and subsequent revival, led me to the acquisition of powers beyond a mortal shell," Elijah explained, not sparing anything. "So, after Rayquaza killed me the first time, I returned the favour. I did not use a Pokémon. I fought him with my bare hands. We traded blows. And when I slammed him into the Alabaster Mountains for the final time, I killed the beast and tore out its very essence from its body." Elijah jerked his head at Rayquaza, who roared loudly - and Elijah did not appear fazed. They had argued over this point, and it had been settled. That story was for another time, however. "What happened to the mountain was us beating each other through the stone. Jugem City was a side-effect of that. There's not much to tell, really. It was a battle. Either I would surrender or I walked away with an Avatar. Fortunately, the latter came true." |

3 ![]() Samson flashed that perfectly crafted grin of his. "I'm sure there are. You're talking about that girl with the dogs, right?" Of course he would know about that. No-one found or caught a legend around here without the master of legends himself getting wind of it. He listened to Elijah's story with great interest, his face doing an excellent job of concealing his surprise and awe. He knew that he had fought a spectacular battle against the dragon, but the Slumber leader had assumed that Elijah had enlisted the aid of his pokémon and not actually fought the beast himself. Then again, if he truly had come back from the dead, the idea of supernatural strength and power was perhaps more plausible. "Impressive, to say the least. Rayquaza is a prize well-earned, I think." Samson said when the story was finished. "And that, believe it or not, was your first lesson. Allow me to explain." "I am a firm believer in practical learning. The most effective way to learn about legendary pokémon is to fight against one, or with one. That's why I only take on apprentices who have caught a legend for themselves. It is only by fighting one that you can learn the most important thing about them." Samson looked at Rayquaza as he said the next part. "They are not invincible. Not the avatars, not even the gods themselves. The former was proven to you when Rayquaza fell in the Necrophicix gym, and the latter, when you took on its parent and emerged victorious." "Legendary pokémon are still pokémon. They are still constrained by what the laws of biology and physics allow. They are strong, of course. Immensely so in the hands of someone who knows what they are doing. But ultimately, they can still be defeated, and captured," he produced a pokéball and held it up, "in one of these. Just like a Rattata." "Never get complacent when fighting with one. Know the strengths and limitations of your legends, and you will unlock their full potential. Follow me." Samson led Elijah over to the throne at the far end of the main hall. "Like I said, the best way of learning about legends is to fight them. So your ultimate objective as an apprentice here is simple. Find and catch another legendary pokémon." Before Elijah could say anything, he held up a hand. "You may be thinking about going after one already, but that would be too easy. Instead, your objective shall be decided by fate. I want to see how you go about hunting a legend from scratch." The Slumber leader opened up a hidden compartment in the throne, and produced a tray full of pokéballs. Forty-eight of them, in fact. "Inside each of these pokéballs is a legendary pokémon. I want you to select one of them. Whatever pokémon is released from it, is the one I want you to capture. Do that, and your apprenticeship will be a success. Oh, hold on." Samson removed one of the pokéballs from the tray. "This one contains my own Rayquaza. No need to go after a pokémon you've already caught." "In the meantime, you are welcome to train here, and spar with me if you wish." ~~~~~ So here's what's going down. I've randomised a list of the 47 pokémon that you haven't caught yet. No alternate forms, no Phione. Pick a number from 1 to 47, and I'll post your target. |

3 ![]() Elijah nodded once. "And one other, too. I don't know if you know him yet, but as far as talented trainers go, he's one of Opaddeka's best. I can't wait until he starts to get serious." He could almost see the inner workings of Samson's mind as he processed Elijah's tale. Everyone did it, really, though he told people with varying degrees of storytelling - all found it hard to believe, but the proof was there. Mountains destroyed, people killed, powers obtained and that unholy blue glow from those black tattoos. He wasn't lying, at the very least. And then the lesson started already. Elijah listened, drinking in each and every word from the legendary man that he spoke; they were all things he understood. All things he believed in and agreed with. Practical learning? Of course. He was a martial artist. He had to learn through experience and training But the invincibility of the legendaries... that was a different story entirely. After all, he had been there. He had seen his own beast fall to repeated attacks and paralysis at Necrophicix. But the gods? The gods themselves could be felled, too, with the right effort. Wha else was not to say that legends could not be beaten? Jolt had acquired Mewtwo. Steely had acquired not one but three legends through her efforts. It was plausible. But the Rattata comparison made him chuckle. Enough so, really, because of Joe; the two brothers were so vastly different and yet Samson still saw fit to make a Normal-type reference. Disdain for the simplicity of a Rattata? Perhaps. But it still amused the hell out of him. As they walked towards the throne for the final explanation of the task ahead, Elijah considered what was going to happen. And what this all meant for him. Fate would be the guiding principle that led him to the execution of his apprenticeship, would it? Fate had served him well so far. No point changing a winning strategy now. Elijah pondered the tray for a moment, looking over its contents; Samson had plucked one straight out of the middle area for his Rayquaza. But that was no matter. Elijah would choose based solely on what drew him closer. Whatever creature he felt called him would be the beast that he would work towards. Slowly, he reached over to the tray, closing his eyes, and let nature run its course. His hand grasped but one of the spheres and pulled it from the tray, holding it out to Samson. The tenth one. |

3 ![]() The tenth one it was. Samson wordlessly took the offered pokéball, held it out in front of him, and tripped the release mechanism. A flash of red light followed, and Elijah's objective materialised between the two gym leaders. Samson cracked a smile. "Azelf, the Willpower pokémon. Fitting for a fighting gym leader, don't you think?" The pokémon in question hovered next to him, blinking at Elijah as it subconsciously sized up any potential threat. "Strong, fast, prone to exploding on you - a good challenge." Azelf's attention had been diverted away from the apprentice, and it was now floating around Rayquaza's head. Not often that it got to meet a legend that wasn't one of its trainer's. "This is your challenge as an apprentice of the Slumber gym. Go out into the world, track down Azelf, and capture it. If you have any questions about the species, or any legendary pokémon for that matter, feel free to ask." As long as it wasn't something like 'where is Azelf?' Because that would defeat the purpose or something. |

3 ![]() Azelf... this was one he wasn't familiar with. However, the creature itself was now before him, staring with its golden eyes set into its blue-crowned, red-jeweled head. Two tails floated out of its body, and Elijah was left to stare at the creature before him with wonder. A... pixie, really. This was an interesting turn of events. "Quite," he commented to Samson's remark. In its own way, yes, it was appropriate. Iron will was one of the most important traits that he had to display in his position. Something like this? Perhaps. But he also knew what that meant in terms of a god's powers. This would be interesting to say the least. One hand raised to his lips in thought. Find it, track it down, and catch it. No problem, right? Right. This would be easier. And, perhaps, a good test of his team's power. That much would be interesting. Despite all that, he found he had no questions. The mystery of this creature was something he wanted to leave for the battle itself. "No questions. I will return with Azelf." Beckoning for Rayquaza, who had stared right back at the Azelf with venom in its eyes, Elijah turrned and left, collecting his shoes and flying right on out of there, the sky serpent hot on his heels. They had a beast to catch. |

Finally, Elijah had been successful. The long trips, the journey, the difficulty in running around and preparing for the ensuing combat - but, strangely, the combat itself wasn't as difficult as he'd expected, like with Rayquaza. Had his preparation been that thorough or was he just lucky enough to get it right? Probably the latter, but whatever. Gamzee was a powerful partner either way. He hoped to mould Azelf in the same way. And now, he returned to Samson's gym, the Avatar of Willpower floating gracefully behind him. Successful in his quest, he could now report such to Samson and claim his prize - knowledge. Glory. The first ever Mythos Badge ever attained in Opaddekan history. Elijah smiled to himself. Good. It was time to do something extraordinary that a mortal could achieve. Elijah's return into the darkened onyx halls of the Legendary Gym was nothing short of a triumphal victory march. |

2 ![]() When Elijah returned to the gym, he would find Samson getting in some sparring time near the back of the main hall. The two pokémon he'd chosen for the impromptu training session? Fittingly enough, a Rayquaza faced off against an Azelf, trading blows and energy attacks with such force that it made the nigh-indestructible onyx fittings entirely necessary. It was almost as if he'd known the fighter was coming. Then again, given that it was his job to know everything related to legends around these parts, he probably had. Upon catching sight of Elijah, and the other Azelf, Samson raised a hand to signal his own pokémon to stop fighting. His features broke out into a knowing grin as he walked towards the other trainer. "Looks like I was right about you." He started, eyeing up the Azelf behind Elijah. "So how did you find the process? Hopefully you had a better time with this one than with Rayquaza." Ah yes, the debriefing to make sure that the apprentice had actually learned something on his quest. Otherwise what was the point of the endeavour? Other than catching more legendary pokémon, of course. |

3 ![]() So while the two legendaries fought, Elijah was kind of unimpressed. He'd already seen the potential each legendary had so a battle was merely a formality. Besides, Azelf would be decimated by his Rayquaza. That said, Elijah gave Samson a smile. It was time to be polite and follow the formalities. "Of course - I didn't have to kill the god of storms for this battle. Actually, it was a lot calmer than I expected. Elijah gave himself a moment to pause and considered what he'd learned. Truth told, in terms of basic battle prowess, Azelf didn't exactly inspre much in its natural state. What it could do, however, was different - shame the Avatar lacked those same powers. "Some legendaries are not equal to others; each has their own natural state of being. In theory, with time and practise, even an Avatar can surpass the basic battle potential of the Deity. But such potential is... limited, at best, when the true power of a legendary is brought into play." Elijah had, you know, outside help in the form of the Oracle and Eun E. Varse to let him know these things. It also helped that he knew it from experience and the fact that he lived in that circle of power now. Sometimes he wondered just how Samson had done it, before leaving that thought idle. It was not his place. Azelf sat upon Elijah's shoulder clamly, having accepted the Soulless One as a partner... for now. |

3 ![]() "Sometimes the hardest thing about capturing a legendary pokémon is finding it in the first place." This was probably particularly true in the case of Azelf, but there were others. Runners, hiders, those who just wanted to see how far a trainer was prepared to go to hunt them down. The gods weren't all warmongering titans. Samson appeared to be satisfied with Elijah's answer, and built upon his premise. "Deities do have their own roles to play in this world, roles much more important than merely battling whatever comes their way. But with their displays of power, I sometimes can't help but think that they're not showing us their true capabilities when they fight us. As if they're testing humanity's worthiness to wield their avatars." He paused, and his lips curled upwards into a wry smile. "Something to think about, anyway." "As for the apprenticeship itself, your quest is done. I needed you to have a legendary before you studied here, and you did. I set you the task of catching another legendary of fate's choosing, and you succeeded. Whether or not hunting down two legendary pokémon is an equal feat to defeating six trained ones in a gym battle is up for debate, but as far as I'm concerned, you've proven yourself." Samson reached into a pocket, producing a wonderfully decorative piece of metal, engraved with a selection of legendary pokémon in various epic poses. He held it out for Elijah, saying, "The Mythos Badge. Congratulations." Cue fanfare and rejoicing. "Oh, and one more thing," He added once Elijah had had time to admire his newest prize. "I have an arrangement with the owner of the TM shop around here. Show them that badge and tell them Samson sent you for your prize, and they'll hook you up with a free TM of your choice. It's on me." ~~~~~ You get the badge, the bonus, and any one TM of your choice from the Slumber TM shop. Enjoy!

3 ![]() And there it was. One of the first-- if not the first-- Mythos Badges ever to be handed out in Opaddeka. Honestly, chances were Elijah had the first. Sure, it was not attained by battle, but by the acquisition of knowledge and power that none other had ever attained. To have come this far was an insane achievement as it was. As a Trainer, Elijah stood atop the pinnacle of the world, but he was no longer just a mere Trainer. The badge, the mural of the glorious beasts of conquest, all of it his. He, too, had passed into legend with this victory. It was a very sweet thing to be able to claim this. Ten badges... three more to go. And those would be visited by conquest. With a nod and then a bow, Elijah was gone. What? No pretty acceptance speech, not a word of thanks? No. He had no time for such pointless gestures. Neither of them did. They both had better things to do with their time than talking. Whether Samson cared was another matter entirely, but this point meant one thing and one thing alone to Elijah: He was ready to move into the last stage of his grand plan to become Champion of the Elite Four. What? Didn't think he was going to do that? Wrong. Total conquest of Opaddeka would be his and none could stop him. ~end |
